A Beginner's Guide To Home Improvement Renovations Think about the value of the home and the effects of personalization when you are doing renovations. Buyers may not want to invest their money in your home if it is too individualized. Adding a textured finish to your walls with drywall mud can create a new look and disguise any blemishes. It is not hard to do. Put drywall mud on the walls with a trowel and then use a sponge, a brush or any item you can think of to add some texture. Keeping a ceiling looking higher than it actually is, is something very easy to do with two tips. Paint a striped pattern on the wall or get a very tall floor lamp. When you do that to your rooms, there is an optical illusion your eyes must follow. Your eyes are going to focus on the lines, and your ceilings will seem higher than they are. Whilst undertaking home renovations in your kitchen or bathroom, it is a good idea to install new water-resistant wall board in place of the existing ordinary wall board. In the construction world, water-resistant wall board is more commonly called "green board". It is great at repelling moisture and inhibiting the growth of potentially dangerous mold. To make your walls look their best, you do not necessarily need expensive artwork, you can decorate the walls with tiles. Choose two different colors of tile and arrange them behind your furniture to give your walls a unique look. While individual solar lights are very affordable and available in a variety of styles, these lights serve little more than decorative purpose. If you really want to light up your paths and walkways, you will probably need hard-wired electric lights. Though they tend to cost more, they are also quite durable and probably longer lasting than solar versions. If you decide to renovate a kitchen or bath, be sure to substitute old sheet rock with drywall specifically made to resist water. Water resistance is important to prevent dangerous molds from thriving within moist walls. "Green board" is a product that is water resistant, and can prevent mold growth so is ideal for this purpose. If you plan on using bricks for your project, you should always purchase more bricks than you need. These extra bricks will come in handy if you need to make some repairs since it will be very hard to find new bricks that correspond to the ones you used. As with any style, brick styles rarely stay the same for long. It will be much easier to match bricks in the future if you set aside a storehouse of the original brick at the outset. Think about how much you will be in your home. It doesn't make sense to do major improvements if you are not planning on staying there for long. You should always keep repairs up, however leave major upgrades or renovations to the permanent owner.

One quick and economical way to alter a room's overall appearance is by changing up its window treatments. Curtains are fairly cheap, and you can find them in many fun patterns. You'll even find it affordable to change your room's look to suit the changing of the seasons: try light colors in the spring and summer, and switch to darker, more intense shades during the cooler parts of the year.
