ART OPENING

INTERCONNECTIONS ENCOUNTER THROUGH OTHER CIVILIZATIONS Edurne Uribe has been committed to developing her skills as a fine artist since childhood when she was introduced to paintings and sculptures at the Armando Reveron Art Studio. Very early in life she became fascinated by the world of art and knew this would have a major impact on her life. Seduced by great masters such as Picasso and Pollock, she was inspired to create her own individ-

ualized style and painting techniques. Her work is influenced by things, that in one way or another, incorporate the evolution of humanity, conquest, invention, progress, family and religion. Edurne also experiments to create her own colors and textures by using oxides (reds, blues, yellows, blacks and whites) and earth elements such as sand. "Interconnections" is a series where, through the knowledge of other civilizations, the artist explores past cultural diversities and take its discoveries to interpret the present time. Currently she develops her work under the tutelage of renowned art professor Teresa Azara. During the month of June, she will be showcased at the Sunflower Cafe and Restaurant, where everybody is welcome to experience her work. Edurne has exhibited her work in several art galleries in South Florida since 2006. IV ACEMAP Exhibitions, Venezuela 1994; ZA-

TRIBAL SYMBOLISM THE MATERIALIZATION OF SPIRITUAL INSPIRATION Liliana Gerardi was born in Argentina, and has resided in the United States since 2000. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo with a Major in Printmaking. Starting in 1990, Liliana has participated in exhibitions in Argentina, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, France, The United Kingdom and Japan. With a strong commitment to teaching engraving techniques in the South Florida area, Liliana spends part of her time giving workshops in museums and galleries in Broward and Miami Dade counties. Liliana currently works from her studio in the Lauderhill Arts Incubator located in Lauderhill, FL. “My artwork ranges from symbolic to abstract. I am in-

spired by primitive and aboriginal art, as well as works with spiritual significance like that of Klee or Kandinsky”- Says Liliana. Regardless of the object's inspiration, part of its value lies in its authenticity: its relationship to ceremonies, beliefs, rituals, and images that are part of tribal life. Yet,

My artwork ranges from symbolic to abstract. I am inspired by primitive art, aboriginal art, as well as art with spiritual significance… without aesthetic appeal, these objects might only be "curiosities." It is the combination of tribal authenticity and aesthetic appeal that transforms her symbolism into a captivating work of art. Liliana works intuitively without preliminary sketches or drawings. In this way she allows herself to be overtaken by the passion and energy of the line, the patterns and the texture of the materials and by the sheer emotions and the feelings from her spiritual beliefs. Liliana employs curved lines that flow freely like flowing water, and she also uses red circles in her

work which she calls “Energy Generators”, which she uses to create focal points that engage the viewer into visual paths to direct the attentions and emotions during the interaction with the piece. OUTSIDE THE BOX SURREALIST INSPIRATION Sandra Scheetz Wise has been an artist since childhood. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in California, Sandra’s talent was first recognized by her teacher when she was only 7 years old. At the time, her teacher had the class draw a tuna fishing boat and Sandra produced an incomparable piece. She quickly found that she could enter art contests, and while in junior high school she won first place in a local art competition with a three-dimensional green

paper-mache dragon that had been submitted by her art teacher. This enabled her to score a job crafting paper-mache piggy-banks for hobby shops. Soon after, both of her parents passed away and she was forced to put her pursuit of art on hold until many years later, when she began taking a course to learn how to mix acrylic paints. Sandra is very fond of unusual art, being able to think outside the box when it comes to creativity. Sandra’s inspiration comes from artists like, Man Ray, Bacon, Dalí, and Magritte. While in high school she observed a fellow student work on a painting and was fascinated by the surrealist technique. It was this inspiration which led her to express her art in surrealist terms.

It would not be until about ten years later that Sandra realized the student had actually been replicating a painting by Salvador Dalí. Sandra’s style of visionary surrealism brings enjoyment, and inspires a great deal of thought. Her aim is to use symbolism to provoke shock in the viewer. Sandra herself has a different way of viewing the world and rarely needs to bring on a creative mood. Every moment is a search for inspiration for Sandra. A single piece may sometimes take up to a month to finish,” Sandra says. Working in both oil and acrylics, acrylics being her favorite, she first develops a very basic idea which she sketches out and then works out the other elements which will become part of the art. Once her full sketch is done, she photographs the piece, traces it in the computer and then projects it onto canvas to enlarge the final work. Sandra sees her artwork evoking much feeling from the viewers, sometimes positive and sometimes negative, depending on the viewer. Sandra loves that, she understands that a good piece of

art has to create some kind of emotion in the viewer. Sandra’s work has been exhibited in many locations throughout Central Florida, Vermont, Pittsburgh, Georgia, California and New York. The artist is always looking for new venues to exhibit her work.
