There is no more spectacular meeting of mauka and makai. 2 WAIMEA CANYON The Grand Canyon of the Pacific is 14 miles long, 3,600 feet deep and home to majestic waterfalls, dazzling red rocks and lush foliage, all begging to be explored. 3 K ALALAU TRAIL In a word, epic. There’s a reason it is one of the most spectacular hikes on earth. 4 HANALEI A town, a bay, a beach. Postcard perfect. Calm in summer, and one of the best surf breaks in winter. Be sure to stay long enough to experience the breathtaking sunset.

5 K ILAUEA Leading to this beautiful bay is a rugged coast dotted with pristine beaches and a world famous wildlife sanctuary. Here, too, is a charming town and the 52-foot historic lighthouse that has been lighting the way for mariners since 1913. 6 S POUTING HORN When the light is just right, the sea erupts through a blowhole into a 50-foot rainbow of sea spray. 7 K OLOA TOWN The island’s first sugar mill opened here in 1835. We are also delighted to offer private, in-residence massage services. Inquire with the Concierge. PLEASE CALL THE CONCIERGE AT 808.320.7400 FOR RESERVATIONS.

DINING HELE MAI‘AI (COME & EAT)

THE BAR AT HUALANI’S

The food and beverage program at Timbers Kaua’i is purely driven and influenced by the relationship between farmer and their harvest, rancher and their cattle and fisherman and their catch. Approachable, thoughtful and creative, Hualani’s Restaurant delivers a fully integrated dining experience that is served in an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. We believe in supporting our local purveyors whose passion for responsible and sustainable farming practices mirror our passion for food and beverage.

Our philosophy is simple: to deliver wellbalanced craft cocktails that complement the seasonality of the kitchen. Where possible, we use ingredients sourced right out our back door at the Farm at Hōkūala and we don’t believe that the kitchen is the only ‘star’ of the food and beverage experience. Join us for our daily pau hana between 3:00pm–5:00pm.

HUALANI’S RESTAURANT The dining experience at Hualani’s draws on the palate that the seasons dictate, what’s fresh is what’s on for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition to a variety of simply prepared ‘cuts’ from our local partner butcher, our culinary experience is inspired by a sense of place and driven by local suppliers, and our menu shows it. Maybe you just want to have a good burger: We’ve got you covered there, too. BREAKFAST HOURS:

7:00am–10:00am

LUNCH HOURS:

11:00am–3:00pm

BAR HOURS: 11:00am–9:00pm

FARMERS TASTING MENU Every Tuesday join our chef as he prepares a three-course menu with ingredients harvested from the Farm at Hōkūala* and picked up that day from our partner farms. Wine pairings available. *Subject to farm harvest

CULTURAL & RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES LEI MAKING AND ORIGINS

MUSEUMS

The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who took an incredible journey from Tahiti, navigating by the stars in sailing canoes. With these early settlers, the lei tradition in Hawaii was born. Join our local instructors to learn how to make your own leis.

Old Koloa Town Historical Center: Learn about the island’s rich historical past as Hawaii’s first sugar plantation by examining artifacts, photographs and memoirs. A few others we recommend: Grove Farm Homestead & Sugar Plantation Museum, Kaua’i Museum and Kōke‘e Natural History Museum.

UKULELE LESSONS

FRIDAY POP-UP MARKET

Join Timber’s own Kaua’i Kitashima for a fun and lively introduction to the sounds of Hawaii as you learn the basics of how to play the Ukulele.

Join us for an evening of fun and shopping as we welcome local Kaua’i artisans and purveyors featuring a variety of goods from handmade jewelry, art and clothing to tasty snacks and healthy living products.

THE TRADITION OF HULA Hula is more than just a dance—it is an artistic representation of Hawaiian life and culture, where every movement, expression and gesture has meaning. Representing plants, animals and natural elements, the hula is a beautiful flowing narrative filled with deeply felt emotion.

RAINY DAY—THE INSIDER’S AGENDA The “Garden Island” of Kaua’i wouldn’t be as green, its soil as fertile, if it weren’t for a few tropical rain showers every now and again. Sometimes throwing on your flip flops and a light jacket is the most energizing change of pace, reminding us all that you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain. At Timbers Kaua’i, we’ve put together such an exciting list of inside activities that your rainy day in Kaua’i might just be your favorite.

SHOPPING Poʻipū is chock-full of amazing boutiques, shops and clothing stores. From the shops along Old Koloa Town to the Poʻipū Shopping Center and The Shops at Kukuiula, shoppers can find some of Kaua’i’s best jewelry, clothing, artwork and local souvenirs. Don’t miss the local’s favorite T-shirt shop, Aloha Exchange.

THE SPA AT TIMBERS KAUA‘I Escape the rain by treating yourself to a day at our island-inspired Spa. The Spa weaves ancient healing traditions with the bounty of island botanicals to inspire “lōkahi”—harmony of body and spirit. Our knowledgeable staff can help customize your massage, wraps and facials.

KEIKI ADVENTURES BIG ADVENTURES FOR THE LITTLE ONES You deserve a relaxing vacation. That is why we have developed programs that give both kids and adults the opportunity to experience meaningful activities that incorporate exercise, culture and fun. Integrating play with culture, kids learn through art about endangered Hawaiian monk seals and Nene (Hawaii’s state bird), and through crafts about palm frond weaving and haku lei making like Native Hawaiians of old. A splashing good time will be had at the pool (always a favorite)! Babysitting services are available upon request. Please inquire with the concierge for scheduling and fees.

It’s educational, but exciting too! Your kids will learn where food comes from, get their hands dirty and maybe even help create a culinary masterpiece for you to enjoy.

What better way to get to know Kaua’i than from a bird’s-eye view? How about getting to know the birds themselves? Take a hike with our adventure guides as they point out local flora and fauna, combining ecological science with ancient Hawaiian legends.

TIMBERS TYKES ROOM Outfitted with beanbags, TV and games, the Timbers Tykes Room is a favorite of our littlest guests, providing a fun play space for children 8 and under. The chalkboard wall offers children a canvas to create their most imaginative masterpieces. The bookcases are filled with storybooks, coloring books, games and toys. Please be aware fun in the Tykes Room is unsupervised.

LIL TIGERS The Golf Pros at the Ocean Course welcome your junior golfers. Kids will learn basic fundamentals of the game followed by a fun putting and chipping contest.

GUIDED BIKE TRIPS Explore the 17 miles of trails within Hōkūala on a guided bike tour. Your knowledgeable local guide will highlight the flora, fauna and must-see endangered species!

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Arts and crafts, Kaua’i-style. Your little ones will delight in painting coconuts or making shell bracelets as souvenirs for their friends. Maybe they want to play ukulele, or learn to hula. If it’s a Hawaiian tradition, we’re happy to show them the ropes, and welcome them into our ‘ohana. Enjoy an ever-evolving variety of authentic crafts for tykes to embrace aloha.

DINING ON THE NORTH SHORE

There are so many wonderful things about the North Shore of Kaua’i. The mountains are unmatched in their sheer majesty, beaches are exquisite and life simply slows down. There are several one-lane bridges on the North Shore so don’t be in a hurry to get anywhere. The beautiful and quaint surf town on Hanalei is full of water-sport (and bikini) shops, eclectic boutiques and local flair. On Saturday, Hanalei Town hosts one of the largest farmers markets on island at 9:30am until noon at Waioli Park. If you are slow making your way to Hanalei, stop at Anaina Hou Park next to Kīlauea Mini Golf for a wonderful farmer’s market from 9:00am until 1:00pm.

Spending the evening on the North shore? The Palate Wine Bar in Kilauea and Bar Acuda in Hanalei are wonderful options for dinner or drinks. If neither of those pique your interest, our Concierge has plenty of other recommendations.

Hanalei town is a great spot for lunch. Recent severe weather has limited travel beyond Hanalei town, but most businesses in Hanalei are open. Check with our concierge for their dining recommendations of the day to take most advantage of your time in Hanalei. Before you head south, stop by Wishing Well Shave Ice for a delicious fresh fruit shave ice—an island staple!

ISLAND GUIDE

EAST SIDE

Bar Acuda is a great spot for a date night, if you’d like to arrange for an evening without the kids. The menu features eclectic tapas inspired by Mediterranean cuisine and changes seasonally to source local fish and fresh ingredients. Try the North Shore honeycomb and goat cheese with crisp apples. Bar Acuda is a little more chic and a little less…Tommy Bahama, but after sampling the amazing wine and cocktails you won’t be concerned about style. Reservations recommended. Open nightly 5:30pm–9:30pm. The Palate Wine Bar located in Kīlauea serves simple small plates and flatbread, which are the secondary to the esoteric wine list sourced from around the world. We recommend ordering a cheese and charcuterie plate and asking the server for their wine pairing recommendations. Epicureans will love this unfussy spot in the historic Kong Long building. Open daily 5pm–10pm.

EAST SIDE

(LĪHUʻE / WAILUA / KAPAʻA / ANAHOLA)

A DAY EAST Timbers Kaua’i is located in the Hōkūala Resort near Līhuʻe and Kalapakī beach, your home beach! Kalapakī beach is the perfect place to learn how to surf, SUP or snorkel (and much more!) from the Kaua’i Beach Boys, as the water is calm and the undertow is minimal.

If you’re looking for a bit of local flair, Kapaʻa (just eight miles north of Timbers Kaua’i) is a great place to start. We encourage you to park and walk through town to explore the shops and eateries. There is a bit of something for everyone here.

One of Kaua’i’s most majestic waterfalls, Wailua Falls is a short 10-minute drive from Timbers Kaua’i. Wailua Falls doesn’t require a hike to reach: Just park and stroll over to capture an awesome shot. For those little adventurers who just can’t wait to start exploring, this is a good first-day option.

Stop by Java Kai, or the Kaua’i Juice Company for a quick bite and beverage. If you are headed to the North Shore, Java Kai is an easy and delicious pit stop for breakfast, and health eaters will love the cold-pressed juices and kombucha at Kaua’i Juice Company.

Though Wailua Falls is easy to access, some enjoy a bit of an adventure before arriving at a waterfall. We recommend kayaking the Wailua river about three miles to the Uluwehi (often called Secret) falls. This is a popular trip to make, so our concierge prefers to pre-arrange your kayaks with Kayak Kaua’i or Kayak Wailua. If kayaking sounds too involved, perhaps floating down the open canals and amazing tunnels of former hand-dug sugar plantation irrigation flumes is more your family’s speed. Kaua’i Backcountry Adventures offers a relaxing and inspiring tubing experience down amazing tunnels and flumes that were dug in the 1870s. The adventure ends with a picnic lunch and a chance to swim in a natural swimming hole. Let us know in advance if you’d like to take this trip or the three-hour zipline tour that Kaua’i Backcountry Adventures offers as these adventures book up fast.

Head north another 10 minutes or so and you’ll reach Anahola, a quaint town with a renowned juice shop, the Kalalea Juice Hale. Sit under the mountains of Anahola and enjoy a creamy acai bowl. Our favorite is the “King Kong” loaded with goji berries, macadamia nuts, cacao nibs and coconut flakes. It’s Kaua’i in a bowl! West of Kapaʻa town is the ridge line known as the Sleeping Giant, perhaps Kapa’a’s most famous resident. This ridge line was named as such due to the fact it looks like a giant figure napping. While the hike is steep in parts and definitely a bit more exhausting than others on island, your family will love the sweeping views at the top. Let our knowledgeable team guide you with our Timbers Kaua’i-guided hikes to experience this area with a local. We pack a picnic, so you can relax and refuel after the hike.

EAST SIDE

(CONTINUED)

DINING ON THE EAST SIDE Is it really a trip to Hawaii without a meal at Duke’s? The famous beachside restaurant is casual and cool, offering burgers, salads, pizzas, tacos and some local specialties like Hanalei taro cakes and seared ahi. Downstairs bar is open daily 11am–10:30pm; main dining room daily 5pm–9:30pm.

JO2 transforms nature’s bounty into exquisite dishes incorporating Kaua’i heirloom vegetables and the freshest ingredients from the sea. Perhaps our favorite restaurant on the island, JO2’s seasonal menu is created daily and always focused on using local ingredients. Open nightly from 5pm–9pm.

From simple pasta dishes to rich entrees, Kaua’i Pasta serves classic Italian dishes that will leave you full and satisfied. One of our favorite places to grab a meal before heading to the airport. Open for lunch and dinner 11am–9pm.

Sam’s Ocean View Restaurant + Bar is known for it’s fabulous Kaua’i ocean views, ambiance, great food and drinks. Locals and tourists alike, consider Sam’s Ocean View as one of the ten best restaurants on Kaua’i. Come have lunch or dinner with us at the Best Kaua’i Restaurant and enjoy island fresh foods prepared daily just for you, from garden to table, you are certain to enjoy every bite. Open Thursday–Monday 4pm–9pm.

Kaua’i Beer Company opened in 2013 and serves as a melting pot of locals and visitors. The brewery offers a selection of classic brews like IPAs and lagers, but also spins out some more creative options like the Sleeping Giant barley wine. The food rivals the beer, with plenty of shareable snacks the kids will love. Join them on Thursday nights when they feature two food trucks curbside on a rotating basis. Open Tuesday–Saturday 11am–10pm.

Avalon Gastropub is a comfortable, approachable place to find a rotating menu of culinary delights and craft cocktails. Open Thursday–Saturday 5pm–9pm.

Street Burger is an urban-chic eatery offering handcrafted, locally sourced burgers, handcut fries, and the Eastside’s largest selection of local and craft beers on tap, complemented by a wine list fit for burger pairings. Open Tuesday–Saturday 11am–10pm.

SOUTH SHORE

(KOLOA / POʻIPŪ)

A DAY SOUTH

DINING ON THE SOUTH SHORE

Your journey to Kaua’i’s south side will take you through the beloved tree tunnel. While Walter Duncan McBryde was landscaping his home in the early 1900s, he realized he had 500 eucalyptus trees in need of a home, so he donated them to the county of Kaua’i. Local Kaua’ians helped to plant the trees and create what is now the marvelous tree tunnel.

Merriman’s Chef and restaurateur Peter Merriman has six restaurants in Hawaii. Kaua’i Merriman’s is casual, but still calls for a bit more etiquette and dress than some of the other local eateries. Merriman’s hosts live music most nights and is a great spot for a special occasion or date night. Open nightly from 5:30pm–9pm.

Shipwreck beach is a popular beach on the south shore, accessible via a road between the Hyatt Hotel and the Poʻipū Bay Golf Course. We don’t necessarily recommend swimming at this beach as high surf can create unfavorable conditions, nor do we recommend jumping off the cliff at Makawehi Point, though you will see other beachgoers doing so. If your littlest ones are scampering off toward the ocean in diapers, take them to Poʻipū beach where they can actually dip their toes in the water. The “baby section” is highly protected from the sea and from any large waves. After stopping by Shipwreck beach, head to Sheraton beach, where swimming is safe, as the beach is buffered by an offshore reef. It’s a great spot for photographs and offers plenty of sand to lay out and read, and plenty of surf to catch waves on your board and enjoy the ocean. Highly recommended for families. If you didn’t get a chance to visit one of the island’s other farmer’s markets, the Kukuiʻula shopping center hosts a farmers market on Wednesday’s from 3:30pm to 6pm. Shop for local produce and beef, as well as souvenirs to bring home. Lastly, a trip to Lappert’s ice cream is a must, their Kaua’i-pie flavor is wonderful and worth every calorie.

La Spezia is a traditional and cozy Italian restaurant, serving up delicious appetizers and pastas. La Spezia also serves breakfast and brunch on Sunday: Don’t miss the Bloody Mary Bar. Open Tuesday–Saturday 7:30am–11am and 5pm–10pm, and Sunday 8am–1pm. Red Salt is an upscale restaurant under Meritage’s banner, serving creative dishes inspired by local cuisine. We recommend Red Salt for nights without the kids, as the menu is definitely geared towards foodies. Surprisingly, the burger is one of the most-revered dishes on the menu, topped with lobster, foie gras and more. Open nightly from 6pm–10pm. Stevenson’s Sushi and Spirits Poʻipū’s luxury nightspot offers sweeping views, scrumptious sushi, inventive cocktails, tropical drinks, aged whiskies and live island music nightly. Sushi served from 6pm–10pm nightly, minors permitted from 5:30pm–9pm. Beach House Restaurant offers a breathtaking oceanfront view for sunsets. They feature pacific-rim cuisine, incorporating local produce into each dish. The fish is sourced from island fishermen, and the beef comes from neighboring ranches. Open for dinner nightly from 4:45pm–10pm.

Māhāʻulepū Coastal Trail is a great coastal hike that takes you from the southeast corner of Shipwreck beach to Keoneloa Bay along sand-dune cliffs, kiawe trees, limestone formations and rocky inlets. The southeast corner is a safe haven for marine life, and you may spot a seal turtle or the Hawaiian Monk Seal if you are lucky.

WEST SIDE

(ELE’ELE / WAIMEA / KŌKEʻE / POLIHALE)

A DAY WEST

DINING ON THE WEST SIDE

No trip to Kaua’i would be complete without a trip to Kokee, the “Little Grand Canyon” of Hawaii. After an hour-long car ride, you’ll want to get out for some photos at the Waimea Canyon lookout. Perhaps stop in Kokeʻe lodge for a cup of coffee and a light snack: The food and drink is local and delicious.

Ishihara Market: This family owned grocery store is adored by locals who come for great pupus (appetizers) and take-out meals. If you are spending the day at Waimea Canyon or Polihale, this is a great place to stop and pick up lunch and snacks for the day. Open Monday–Thursday 6am–7:30pm, Friday and Saturday 6am–8pm, Sunday 6am–7pm.

There are several trails to choose from in Kokeʻe State Park. We recommend guests check in at the museum for up-to-date trail conditions or inquire with our Timbers Kaua’i guides for trail recommendations based on current weather conditions and fitness levels. There is no cell service in Kokeʻe, which really helps visitors get back to nature, but is important to note before heading there. Not all of Kaua’i can be explored by foot, nor should it be. Board a boat for a seaside tour of the Nā Pali coast. There are catamaran and rafting expeditions, though the rafting expeditions offer a bit more flexibility and allow you to tour the waterfalls and natural sea caves, provided the surf cooperates. Our Concierge is happy to arrange advance reservations aboard the best boats on the island with Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures. Polihale Beach is the last beach on the west side of the island. Polihale spans 12 miles of uninterrupted white sand beach and is our strong recommendation for a quintessential beach sunset photo. The cliffs light up red in the evening, so get there just before dark, but bring along any snacks or drinks, as there are no shops on this end of the island.

Island Tacos: Located roadside in Waimea town, this simple, order-at-the-counter taco stand offers local fish, pork, chicken and even a wide array of wonderful vegetarian and vegan options. You’ll enjoy outdoor seating and unique toppings like wasabi-spiked aioli sauce. The simplicity adds to the ability to get to the beach fast! Open daily 11am–5pm. Japanese Grandma’s Cafe: Family owned, Japanese restaurant located in Hanapepe town. Serving fantastic sushi, ramen, brunch and authentic Japanese cuisine, for lunch and dinner. A local fave! Open Wednesday–Monday, 11am–3pm and 5pm–9pm. Midnight Bear Breads: An artisan bakery serving artisan breads, croissants, sandwiches, panini’s, pizza, and coffee all fresh in historic Hanapepe town. Open Wednesday–Saturday, 8am–3pm. Lappert’s Hawaii: On your way back to Timbers Kaua’i, stop by Lappert’s original store in Hanapēpē founded in 1983. This popular local ice cream shop only uses the freshest and finest ingredients. We recommend their signature flavor, Kaua’i Pie! Open 11am–6pm.

Hanapepe is a small community located just south of Waimea, definitely worth a visit. Full of vibrant art galleries, the famous historical swinging bridge, and the “Western most bookstore in the U.S.”, this town boasts fantastic restaurants and bakeries as well.
