Brent, Wandsworth and Westminster

Welcome

Over the past few years, Brent, Wandsworth & Westminster Mind has navigated various challenges, including post-pandemic remobilisation, the cost-of-living crisis, and shifts in the commissioning landscape. We have also lost a couple of our big housing contracts. Despite these changes, we’ve shown resilience and achieved remarkable success by diversifying the services that we offer and embracing a transformative approach. Last year, we reached more people than ever before—over 19,000 people—through a comprehensive range of services. In 2023, we celebrated several

milestones. We secured a modern space - to run our clinical services from and unveiled a brand-new community hub based in Great Western Studios. Our team were awarded a National Mind excellence award for ‘Workforce, Volunteers, and Culture’ and achieved silver accreditation from Investors in People, recognising three key pillars of our culture: a foundation of trust and autonomy, collaboration and inclusivity, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. Our accomplishments reflect our ongoing commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

Special thanks goes to our colleagues and board of trustees who contribute their experience, expertise, and energy to ensure the continued success and growth of the charity. We’d also like to thank our partners and funders whose support enables us to create a comprehensive pathway bridging public and corporate funding to meet the needs of our community. We hope you enjoy learning about the impact we’ve made in 2023. For 2024, our focus is on expanding our range of service-user-led, high-quality services. We will continue prioritising an open and inclusive workplace that mirrors the diverse demographics of the communities we serve. We invite you to stay connected through our social media and newsletters, and, most importantly, to join us in embodying our vision of ‘living the life you choose.’

Brent,

– The majority of our services are provided at no cost and our commitment revolves around social impact and improving peoples lives rather than financial gain.

How we’ve been meeting challenges:

– 15 people die by suicide in the UK every week, with 75% of those deaths being male. Our suicide services support over 1,000 people annually.

– Nearly 1 in 4 employees across the UK meet the criteria for “clinically relevant symptoms” of depression. Last year, we delivered Mental Health Training to over 5,000 people and 80 organisations.

Our People

Our team is the cornerstone of our success, and their dedication is paramount to achieving our goals. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced significant growth, expanding our team from 50 to over 125 staff members. At the core of our achievements is our clear and compelling vision: to empower people to live the life they choose We’ve transitioned from a more traditional structure towards a flexible environment, which is more collaborative, inclusive, and flexible. By embracing a learning culture, we’ve positively transformed our internal dynamics and enhanced our engagement with the community.

As we’ve expanded, we’ve maintained that our aim isn’t necessarily to provide more, it’s about providing better. Adapting to the evolving landscape of mental health, our growth has earned recognition from multiple awarding bodies.

“At BWW Mind, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Achieving the Silver level of the ‘We Invest in People’ accreditation is a testament to their dedication. We don’t just have principles; we have a culture where everyone actively strives to make work better. I’m immensely grateful to work with such inspiring colleagues every day and thank them for their continued hard work.”
Simon Thompson, CEO

““I love my job at BWW Mind. I have been with the organisation for nearly 7 years now in a few different roles. I love that through my work I get to set up community wellbeing projects that provide opportunities for people to learn new skills, build confidence and enhance their social, physical, and mental wellbeing. I find working here exceptionally rewarding!” Tom Acres, Community Lead, Westminster and Brent

Our Volunteers

For Volunteers Week in June, we celebrated our incredible volunteers who play a vital role in providing support, which is apparent across the organisation; from handling reception enquiries to leading community groups and providing behind-the-scenes assistance in central services. We’d like to say a big thanks to each and every one of them.

““I’ve

been a volunteer here for 6 years. It’s improved my mental wellbeing, taught me new skills, and given me more confidence with people. Without the role, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Mental Health Training

We are proud to be able to offer a range of training courses to organisations across the corporate, public and charity sector. Courses available for booking include:

Bitesize Wellbeing Workshops / Diversity & Inclusion

Sessions / Mental Health Awareness / Mental Health

First Aid Training / Suicide Awareness Training.

In the UK, stress, anxiety, and depression account for almost half of the working days lost to ill health, equating to 17 million days annually. Our mental health training equips employees with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and address prevalent mental health challenges.

““The instructors did an excellent job in the delivery of the course. They created a safe space where delicate & sensitive themes can be explored.”

Key 2023 highlights:

– We secured some funds to enable us to start up a programme in Secondary schools in Brent, training young people to open up about their mental health and manage it.

What sets our training apart is its dual purpose, as every purchased package reinvests in our local support programmes.

In the past year, we achieved a significant milestone, delivering training to over 5,000 people.

– We secured a three-year training programme with BentallGreenOak and Skanska. This partnership addresses the critical importance of mental health training in the construction industry, recognising that construction workers have a higher risk of suicide.

“The course content and practical exercises were very insightful and useful. The instructors led the course extremely well. Thank you so much!!”

“Brent, Wandsworth and Westminster Mind brought me back from the edge… they helped me change the course of my life.”

Mental Health Services

In the past year, we reached more people than ever before, thanks to the restructuring of our Senior Management Team. This realignment allowed us to focus on expanding our programmes and our service offerings.

We established a new wellbeing hub at Great Western Studios, hosting our creative arts programmes and community groups.

Our Westminster base underwent a transformation into a clinical hub, primarily housing our Talking Therapies and office functions. This move enabled us to provide a broader choice of essential services to our community.

In Wandsworth, our third hub continued to make a positive impact on those dealing with moderate to severe mental illness. Participants reported increased resilience, enhanced social connections, and a greater sense of empowerment in managing their mental health.

Collaborating closely with other local minds and networks, we extended our reach, resulting in higher satisfaction rates and improved service outcomes.

Collectively, these changes reflect our commitment to enhancing mental health services and making a positive difference in the lives of those we support.

Talking Therapies

Free Talking Therapies

Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT) is a nationwide initiative offered by the Department of Health, aiming to support people with mild to moderate depression and anxiety. We’re delighted to announce the extension of our contract until March 2025. This extension reflects the trust and recognition we’ve earned for providing quality services, enabling us to continue to meet the needs of our community.

Key Statistics:

– Over 750 people accessed and received treatment within the service.

– We achieved a 50% recovery rate last year, aligning with NHS benchmarks.

– Surpassing national waiting time targets, 98% of people waited less than 6 weeks for an initial appointment.

Private Counselling & Psychotherapy

In late 2023, we introduced a new service aimed at extending counselling and psychotherapy to a broader audience. Tailored for residents of Brent, Wandsworth, Westminster, and nearby boroughs who do not meet the criteria for free counselling, this service is delivered by both trainee and established Integrative counsellors. Through weekly sessions, they offer compassionate and tailored support, empowering clients to navigate and overcome emotional and psychological challenges through a personalised approach.

For our private counselling service please call 020 7259 8134 or email risecounselling@bwwmind.org.uk

Supported Self-help

In partnership with National Mind, we launched a free 6-week guided programme addressing systemic gaps and expanding support outreach. This programme, distinct from counselling, offers materials and regular calls for emotional management without requiring a GP referral. Our practitioners apply CBT-based skills, customising a support programme covering issues like anxiety, grief, loneliness, low self-esteem, depression, anger management, stress, and understanding menopause.

““I’m incredibly grateful for the time that me and my therapist spent together. She was always kind and attentive, actively listening to what I had to say. She was calm and composed and really grounded me and our conversations in a helpful, encouraging, way. The time we’ve worked together has helped me develop new skills to ease my anxiety. It’s not gone, but I know ways now in which I can manage it. And I know some steps I CAN take moving forward to continue my mental health journey. Thank you.”

Community Wellbeing Programme

Practical life skills sessions / Employment & volunteer support programme / Creative arts / Physical fitness activities / Ecotherapy

Following the investment in a brand-new community hub, our community programmes have experienced significant growth over the past year. We’ve fine-tuned existing groups and introduced new programmes such as filmmaking, creating a more comprehensive and inclusive range of services.

Programme Impact

– Annually, we support over 200 people across all groups.

– 76% experience an improvement in their mental health.

– 80% report an increase in confidence.

– 85% learn and develop new skills.

We’d like to say a massive thanks!

By catering to individual preferences, we have created an environment where people can gain valuable skills as well as improve wellbeing. We’d like to say thanks to key partners whose funding and support enables us to run and expand our groups:

“ “It’s a life-saver, a mind-saver, and a soul-saver. It really is an amazing service.”
“Your team does an amazing job helping the community. that anymore.”
“Words can’t describe, how grateful I am. My life has changed for the better.”

Peer Support

Befriending

Our essential Community Befriending service, provides crucial support to those with moderate to high mental health needs. By pairing befrienders with people facing daily challenges, our focus is on enhancing selfmanagement skills, building confidence, and encouraging independence.

They can support with basic household tasks, such as doing shopping or cooking, help with attending appointments, going to the gym or other leisure activities, or just going for a coffee and a chat. The activities are agreed at the initial assessment meeting.

Outcomes:

– We support an average of 70 service users per quarter

– Annually, we deliver over 6,000 dedicated service hours

– 76% report better health and wellbeing

– 68% increase engagement in the community

– 68% improve their independent living skills

– 70% increase their social engagements

These outcomes enable us to continue supporting people to develop independence beyond the services, with a focus on personal growth, social integration, and autonomy.

Floating Support

We provide short-term, lowlevel floating support for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Our objective is to empower people with the skills necessary to live independently, either in their communities or in their own homes after transitioning from supported housing.

We offer support with welfare benefits, maintaining tenancy, developing independence and life skills, improving social connections, accessing employment and training, linking to other services, and assisting with housing in Wandsworth.

We are the only floating support service in the borough and achieved a remarkable 13% capacity increase, eliminating waiting lists, and supported over 250 people with an impressive service utilisation rate of 96%.

Spotlight on Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy can have a profound impact on mental wellbeing. It teaches people to cultivate a therapeutic connection with the environment, and consequently enhances their overall health and resilience.

Green Minds:

In partnership with The Royal Parks, ‘Green Minds’ offers a unique opportunity for people to enrich their mental health and wellbeing by nurturing a deeper, mutually supportive relationship with nature. Participants actively contribute to creating new wildlife habitats, explore the intricacies of biodiversity across seasons, and acquire valuable skills through a diverse range of outdoor, nature-based activities.

The Fig Tree Gardening Club:

This therapeutic horticulture initiative in collaboration with ‘Look Ahead’ Housing Association and The Howard De Walden Estate, provides weekly therapeutic sessions.

Participants not only learn the art of maintaining a garden that supports diverse plants and wildlife but also discover mindful practices to enhance their overall wellbeing. The club teaches how to nurture plants, cultivate herbs, and grow fruits and vegetables.

London Zoo Volunteer Project:

We’re committed to empowering people beyond traditional services, hence why we introduced a group in partnership with ZSL London Zoo. This initiative provides opportunities for those who gained skills through our therapeutic groups and are seeking volunteering opportunities.

Achievements:

– 82% reported improved mental health

– 67% experienced enhanced physical health.

– 67% reported increased confidence.

– 90% felt a deeper connection to nature.

We also received a commendation from the ‘Queens Park Community Council’, recognising the value of our work.

Our outcomes not only validate the project’s effectiveness but also highlight our unwavering commitment to making a lasting impact on our community. We’re thrilled to share that we have another year of investment in the project and eagerly anticipate expanding and enhancing its delivery.

Support for People With Severe Mental Illness (SMI)

Conditions like cardiovascular disease contribute to higher mortality rates among those with severe mental illness. Our goal is to empower people with SMI to gain independence, take charge of their health, and reduce physical inactivity.

Active Wellbeing Service

In collaboration with ‘Enable’ and NHS South West London Integrated Care Board, our service provides a 10-week personalised 1:1 training programme, engaging people in physical activity to enhance overall health and wellbeing. This programme is recognised as a model of best practice; addressing physical inactivity in people with severe mental illness in Wandsworth. Service users set personalised and achievable goals, receiving continuous support from specialists to stay on track. Workshops cover nutritional guidance, general wellbeing tips, and diabetes prevention and awareness.

We’re proud that:

Did you know?

Living with an SMI can reduce life expectancy by 10-20 years.

Physical Health Checks

Research indicates that people with SMI are less likely to receive preventive care treatment for conditions such as diabetes or stroke. To enhance our support for this group, we designed and piloted a service over 2023 to address the lack of access to healthcare. In partnership with Richmond, Croydon, and Kingston Mind, this service offered annual health checks for body mass index (BMI), waist measurement, cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, and smoking & alcohol consumption.

– 84% experience improved mental wellbeing.

– 64% become more physically active.

– Over 700 people have benefitted from the service.

– We’ve maintained a 96% attendance rate since 2018.

In-Reach Peer Support Service

We pioneered a service at two hospitals across Wandsworth. Peer Support Workers utilise their lived experience to support, empower, and facilitate patients in their transition back into the community. Drawing on their personal journeys, these support workers play a vital role in providing guidance and understanding, creating a supportive bridge for patients transitioning from the hospital setting back to their home. By offering a unique perspective and a relatable connection, they offer a more patient-centric pathway out of hospitalisation.

A Look Back at the service over the last 12 months:

– Over 60 people benefited from the service

– 88% had a positive experience

– High engagement across peer-led groups and ward activities

– Consistent attendance

“All the staff are great. The doctors are really good. Everyone in the team listens to you. I’ve had good times with other people who are residents here. Everyone is very nice. Everyone is helpful and always tries their best to help you.”

Suicide Support Services

Our goal is to lead the way in tackling suicide, working to prevent more deaths. Starting with pilot projects in 2020, funded by the NHS in South West and North West London, we’ve now expanded into long-term services offering crucial support to those impacted by suicide.

Did you know?

– Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death globally among the 15-19 age group (WHO)

– A prior suicide attempt is the most significant risk factor for suicide in the general population

– Men in the United Kingdom are significantly more likely than women to take their own lives

– There is also research to suggest that living in deprivation can increase the likelihood of suicide

Suicide Prevention

Suicide is a major public health concern, especially among young people and men under 50. We believe suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility and offer free workshops in South-West London to increase awareness and teach communication skills. These workshops reach diverse groups, including healthcare providers, educators, and community members across six boroughs. Over the past year, we’ve successfully engaged over a thousand individuals, helping break the stigma and promote discussion around suicide.

Bereavement Support

We support people bereaved by suicide across 15 North-West & South-West London boroughs. We collaborate closely with existing bereavement services to provide personalised support. Our service delivers 1:1 support, short-term interventions, advocacy, liaison support before and after funerals and inquests, peer support groups, and effective signposting to relevant organisations. We secured extended funding until mid-2024, a testament to our performance and delivery.

Key outcomes:

– Over 650 impactful sessions delivered annually to cater to the diverse needs of our clients.

– 30 trained Prevention Champions actively participating in various activities.

– Half of the referrals from last year are still actively participating in our services.

Services for Children and Young People

585 sessions delivered last year

3097 people attended

50% of mental health problems are established by the age of 14

Mental health issues affect about 1 in 6 children and young people and evidence shows that this figure is on the rise, which is something that we take seriously. Young people today navigate a complex and everchanging world, facing challenges and pressures across many aspects of their lives.

Whole School Approach

This is a wider programme of psychoeducational support for young people, parents/carers, and teachers. We work in 44 Westminster schools to identify and address mental health issues early on. This service includes:

– Psychoeducational workshops available to young people, parents/carers, and staff.

– Tailored workshops for children and young people shaped through close collaboration with school staff to pinpoint relevant topics. Our flexible approach ensures customised delivery for each school.

– Working with parents and carers to support them to improve their child’s mental health with our skills-building workshops. Together, we develop coping strategies, provide guided self-help tools, and encourage active involvement in supporting mental health needs.

– Reflective Practice sessions for school staff, providing a space to reflect on the strengths and challenges of working in a highly pressurised education environment.

1:1 and group support

“Thank you so much for running the sessions. I found the sessions very helpful and informative. It was a great opportunity to hear and share ideas from parents too.”

1:1 and Group Support

In partnership with NHS England and the Department of Education, we provide evidence-based 1:1 and group interventions for children, young people, and parents/guardians in primary and secondary schools. Our services, facilitated by skilled Mental Health Practitioners and Assistant Psychologists, boast high uptake, completion rates, and positive user feedback. Here’s how we’re making a positive impact:

Infant Age Group (0-5):

– 1:1 family support in homes, primary schools, and family hubs.

– Parents and carers can access personalised guidance on child development, parenting skills, and behavioural norms.

Primary Age group:

– Evidence suggests working with parents and children, rather than working directly with the child, is more effective for improving children’s health and well-being.

– We offer 6-8 sessions, in school or online, with parents and carers of children.

– Additional resources: parent support groups, psychoeducation workshops, and mental health assemblies

Secondary Age Group (Westminster):

– Young people facing emotional challenges can access specialised support.

– We offer 6-8 sessions of 1:1 support, psychoeducational workshops, and assemblies.

99% of young people are seen in under 28 days 95% waited under 28 days for a full assessment

SEND (special educational needs and disability)

By adapting our Whole school approach (WSA) programme, we are now able to offer psychoeducational workshops and art therapy to schools not benefitting from a Whole School Approach.

“Be Kind to Your Mind”

Psychoeducation:

In collaboration with our colleagues in the Education Psychology department, we deliver tailor-made psychoeducational workshops designed to be interactive and accessible to children and young people with SEND. The workshops aim to increase awareness of mental health needs and support children and young people through periods of transition and change.

Art Therapy:

Our 1:1 and group art therapy sessions, provided in specialist educational provision, create a supportive and nurturing environment. Through these interventions, young people explore creativity, express themselves, and cultivate essential skills for personal growth. Leveraging the therapeutic potential of art, we contribute to the overall wellbeing and development of the children and young people we support.

140+ workshops delivered to over 2800 people

We provide a platform for students to express thoughts and feelings outside the conventional academic setting

200+ clinical sessions delivered

SEND in Mind

We introduced a new service in Wandsworth, specifically supporting families with children with SEND (0-19) with anything related to the health, education, and overall wellbeing of their child.

The service targets gaps in the system for families that face unique challenges. Our dedicated family workers offer support with various challenges, providing practical and emotional assistance, along with information, advice, and guidance.

From working through the complexities of disability allowance applications to facilitating workshops on parental wellbeing and young people living with anxiety, our family workers go beyond conventional support and have built up a sense of community through peer support networks and tailored parenting support programmes that support families to navigate and benefit from challenges and transitions.

Since launching last summer:

– Families supported: 238

– 1-2-1 support to families: 45

– No. of families that received support with benefits, and housing challenges: 105

– Workshops: 25

“ “I’m grateful for the support I have received through SEND in Mind and to know I am not alone with the challenges I am facing.”

Youth Club Support Workers

While schools play a fundamental role in supporting young people, there are gaps in the system around preventative and early intervention support. It’s not possible for all services to operate within the school environment, and some young people may choose not to disclose details about their mental health at school for various reasons, including stigma and discrimination.

Research indicates that young people benefit from mental health support in familiar, relaxed environments like youth clubs. This is why we place our Mental Health Youth Workers here.

Our approach encourages open discussions and enables us to identify those in need of support. Across 10 youth clubs, we offer preventative and early intervention support addressing mental health, friendship, or youth violence issues.

This service originated as a pilot project in three youth clubs, but we are now pleased to offer it across more clubs in Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, providing support to many more young people.

“Having a workshop on worry has helped me and my friends to control our emotions better.”

Young person journey:

– Youth workers run psychoeducational groups in youth clubs, fostering an informal yet engaging atmosphere.

– Through these groups, youth workers identify people requiring extra mental health support, referring them to our 1:1 service.

– 1:1 sessions are tailored to various needs such as anxiety, low mood, friendship/relationship issues, stress, body image, and emotion regulation.

If higher levels of support are needed, referrals are made to CAMHs, Education mental health practitioners, or non-statutory services in the community.

300+ young people are supported annually

Partners and fundraisers

We partner with the NHS and local authorities to provide value for money, clinically-driven frontline services. Through our work, we’re able to focus on early intervention and prevention, targeting mental health conditions at the most cost-effective stage. We want to say a huge thank you to the commissioners that enable us to carry out our work. In addition, we couldn’t do what we do without the support from corporate donors that sponsor our community programmes. We’d especially like to thank:

– The Howard de Walden Estate

– Platform EU

– Playtech

– Morgan Sindall

We would also like to show our gratitude and to all the organisations and individuals that undertake fundraising activities to raise vital funds for us. In 2023, stand out fundraising came from Decaux who raised almost £11K after 40 of their staff took on the Three Yorkshire Peaks challenge and Howard De Waldren Estate who chose us to be the beneficiary of their Christmas lights switch on ‘Merry Marylebone’ raising an amazing £15K.

We can’t thank everyone in this publication, but please know that your support is so appreciated by our staff and service users.

If you’d like to partner with us, designate us as your charity of the year or carry out a fundraising activity for us please email fundraising@bwwmind.org.uk
