What's up Red Bulls! Fall is finally fast approaching, and along with it will bring school, stress, and tons of memories yet to be experienced. I want to personally thank all of our Red Bulls who really seized summer by the reins and took the time to volunteer, socialize, and lead in Key Club; most importantly though, I hope you all had fun with it! With a fresh new year, please be sure to spread that Red Bull spirit, and encourage someone new to join this wonderful experience that we all love of service leadership and Kiwanis family. Whether it be Club Rush, freshman orientation, or just a person-to-person connection, let others know about the Key Club journey that awaits them. See you soon, and enjoy a great start to the school year! Love, LTG Jessica

Key Club has given me the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at one of the most sought after events in San Diego: Comic Con. My first few moments there were filled with excitement, confusion, and amazement. I can honestly say it was one huge reward the club has offered to its members. The top members of the club were given four day passes with volunteer jobs from 9 am until 12 pm each day. We were extremely lucky to get to go behind the scenes at the convention center and its surrounding buildings to see how the event is run. It was a very eyeopening event as I realized just how much dedication and passion such a large number of people put into making this event a real success. We were trusted in handling exclusive items and preparing prizes for the attendees. The work was easy and quick, and soon each early afternoon we were released into the convention. On top of seeing the casts of Teen Wolf, The 100, IZombie, Scream Queens, Suicide Squad, Supernatural, Power Rangers, The Strain, Fantastic Beasts and authors James Dashner, Ransom Riggs, Melissa De La Cruz, Scott Westerfield, and so many more, I am so grateful I was able to attend this event and make so many special memories with other passionate members of the club.

This event is often a "Key Club moment" for many members every year and I could definitely see why. It was my first time attending such an event and I was able to form new friendships with people in other regions. I particularly remember a girl named Emerald from Division 21 and she was very lively, spirited, and creative. I enjoyed how we were grouped into different Pokemon groups (mine was the Squirtle Squad). My favorite activity was Key Club trivia as I had already known a bunch of facts from DCON 2016. Overall, it was a very enjoyable event with wonderful snacks and a beautiful view of Lake Poway!

he Silk Road Service program from Rustic Pathways took place in Yunnan (云南), a beautifully lush, mountainous, and largely rural province located deep in southwestern China. I participated as one of 12 volunteers, supervised by 3 leaders. Our first service base was the Heart 2 Heart Youth Hostel located in Da He Cun (⼤河村), a sustainable enterprise contained within a traditional Bai house and which directs all profits to funding local NGOs. A quick walk into town brought us to the local Heart 2 Heart Foundation, a community center which helps take care of and educate the children of migrant workers. We spent the next two days getting to know each other through both planned and spontaneous games and activities before sharing an educational walk through an abandoned village and working together to prepare dumplings for lunch. Our next service base was the Horse Pen 46 Hostel in Shaxi (沙溪), a historic market town along the Ancient Tea-Horse Road (茶 古道), also known as the Southern Silk Road. Two days after our arrival in Shaxi, we took a horseback ride into Ma Ping Guan ( 坪关), a small village nestled in the mountains outside Shaxi. Our task was to help paint the walls of the village's elementary school, decorating both the classrooms and courtyard with fanciful scenery, international greetings, and colorful handprints. After the hike back to Shaxi, we hosted a group of teenage migrant children who volunteer at the local Heart 2 Heart Foundation library, spending the morning teaching each other new games and words before heading into town and sharing lunch and ice cream.
