Hunting Rare Birds by the intricate and delicate display of feathers, the graceful glide of the birds and the complicated maneuvers they went through to remain airborne. Common gulls became things of beauty. I was hooked. That winter, Pat and I began making frequent trips to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge southwest of Cambridge to photograph the thousands of swans, geese and ducks that winter there. It seemed as if there was a bald eagle perched on the limb of every snag in the swamp. Great blue herons pulled in their long necks and jumped into the air as we approached. The new camera captured it all in vivid color.
