Is your body resistant to weight loss? Are you running out of gas more than you would like? Most people think that they need to lose weight to get healthy when in truth people must first get healthy before their body can properly burn fat and maintain energy levels. Glands in your body secrete various hormones, which act like chemical messengers that affect every organ and control many vital body functions, including growth, development and the conversion of food into energy. The hormonal system is an interconnected web where a subtle increase in one hormone can produce hormonal responses in other endocrine glands resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood issues and low libido. Some hormones are in charge of fat storage and fat burning, these hormones include insulin, cortisol, growth hormone, thyroxine, adrenaline, testosterone and estrogens. When your endocrine system is out of balance your body can store excessive fat and stubbornly hold on to it, making you ‘weight loss resistant’ and fatigue. If your conventional doctor is not testing you for proper hormone balance, this makes it quite difficult to optimize your health. Here are some examples: Problems with the hormone insulin are by far the most common cause of weight gain and fatigue in our society today. Most conventional doctors rarely if ever test your insulin levels which when elevated will cause fat storage, inability to mobilize fat out of storage and fatigue. To lower insulin you must be properly treated for insulin resistance and stress with elevated cortisol levels. Chronic stress is a major contributor to weight gain and fatigue primarily through the action of the hormone cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels from chronic stress are associated with increased appetite, cravings for sugar, and weight gain. Elevated Cortisol from stress binds to receptors in the brain stimulating the urge to eat foods high in fat and/or sugar. Studies further show that elevated cortisol from stress causes a buildup in abdominal fat. This toxic belly fat has been associated with an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes. Problems with elevated cortisol can be properly treated once diagnosed with a salivary Adrenal Stress Index Test. The thyroid produces hormones that control cellular metabolism and the conversion of calories into energy. So if it is not working properly you end up with weight gain and fatigue. The usual approach to identifying low thyroid function is to only measure TSH. If the results are within the labs “normal” range you are told your thyroid is fine. If your TSH is high conventional doctors many times will prescribe a thyroid hormone such as Synthroid. The problem with this simple approach to a complex syndrome is that many people continue to suffer from their symptoms even when they are taking thyroid medication, even after their doctor tells them their thyroid tests are “in the normal range”. To find the underlying causes and possible solutions for weight gain and fatigue associated with low thyroid function doctors need to look much deeper with specific laboratory testing. Weight gain and fatigue along with many female health problems, such as PMS, endometriosis and menorrhagia are caused by fluctuations in estrogen levels along with higher levels of toxic estrogen and a deficiency of healthy estrogen metabolites. This is a signal that a woman should aggressively address how her body is handling endogenous estrogens as well as oral estrogens and those found within our environment. These “female problems” are signaling that future health problems may arise from these toxic estrogens. Over a quarter century ago researchers discovered that women with breast and uterine cancer made too little of the 2-hydroxyestrone metabolite and too much of the 16-hydroxyestrone metabolite. This common female hormonal imbalance can be easily tested for and treated naturally with a urinary estrogen profile. Specific laboratory testing can help you determine if you are suffering from hormonal imbalance. A doctor must be trained in utilizing and properly interpreting these biomarkers to make them useful to a patient's recovery. Want to know more about hormonal imbalances and how it can be conquered once and for all, attend my FREE SEMINAR! Call 763-862-7100 to reserve your space, seating is limited. EARLY PIONEERS cont’d • Wh When C Capt. t Al Alcock k and d Lt. Lt Brown B flew ffrom Canada to Ireland, they took with them Lucky Jim and Twinkletoes— two stuffed black cats, for luck. However, these "lucky" charms didn't do much good. First, a super-heated exhaust pipe disintegrated. Then a blinding fog moved in and the plane would have taken a nose dive into the Atlantic if the fog hadn't cleared 100 feet above the sea. Next, ice formed over the instruments on the wing after a snowstorm and Lt. Brown had to climb out on the wing to chip it off. But in spite of it all, the two men landed safely. Unfortunately, Alcock was killed six months later while flying in a fog in a Paris air show. Brown subsequently swore off flying forever, but his pilot son was killed in World War II. • President Wilson and other important officials gathered in May of 1918 to witness the take-off of the first airmail flight. The plane was to carry mail from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia. After take-off, the plane somehow went off course and landed in Waldorf, Maryland— which is farther away from Philadelphia than Washington is. The mail was eventually delivered by train. • In 1938 Howard Hughes filled his plane with ping-

pong balls so it would float if it went down over the ocean. He then proceeded to set the speed record for flying around the world. • On March 2, 1949, a U.S. Superfortress bomber completed the first nonstop flight around the world when it landed at Fort Worth, Texas. The plane traveled 23,452 miles (37,742 km) in 94 hours and 1 minute. It was refueled four times in flight. • In 1986, the Voyager accomplished the first round-the-world flight without refueling. Cruising at a speed between 65 and 120 mph (104 – 194 km/hr) at an altitude of 8,000 to 10,000 feet (2,500 – 3,000 m) it took pilots Rattan & Yeager 216 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds to travel 25,012 miles (40,252 km). BOTHERSOME ANTS Lemons You don’t need insecticides or ant traps to ant-proof your kitchen. Just give it the lemon treatment. First squirt some lemon juice on door thresholds and windowsills. Then squeeze lemon juice into any holes or cracks where the ants are getting in. Finally, scatter small slices of lemon peel around the outdoor entrance. The ants will get the message that they aren’t welcome. Lemons are also effective against roaches and fleas: Simply mix the juice of 4 lemons (along with the rinds) with 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water and wash your floors with it; then watch the fleas and roaches flee. They hate the smell. Oranges Get rid of the ants in your garden, on your patio, and along the foundation of your home. In a blender, make a smooth puree of a few orange peels in 1 cup warm water. Slowly pour the solution over and into anthills to send the little pests packing. Plastic Containers You watch helplessly as the ants march up the picnic table leg, onto the tabletop, and into the picnic meal. Here’s a foolproof way to stop them in their tracks: Place a plastic container on the bottom of each picnic table leg. Fill with water. The ants won’t be able to crawl past. Salt If ants are beating a path to your home, intercept them by sprinkling salt across the door frame or directly on their paths. Ants will be discouraged from crossing this barrier. Herbs and spices Flour, sugar, and paprika can all fall prey to ants. Keep these cooking essentials safe by slipping a bay leaf inside your storage containers. If you’re concerned about the flour or sugar picking up a bay leaf flavor, tape the leaf to the inside of the

canister lid. This trick works inside cabinets, too, where sachets of sage, bay, stick cinnamon, or whole cloves will smell pleasant while discouraging ants. See more uses for Spices. Talcum Powder For an effective organic ant repellent, scatter talcum powder liberally around house foundations and known points of entry, such as doors and windows. Other effective organic repellents include cream of tartar, borax, powdered sulfur, and oil of cloves. You can also try planting mint around the house foundations. Vinegar Serve the ants on your premises with an eviction notice. Pour equal parts water and white vinegar into a spray bottle. Then spray it on anthills and around areas where you see the insects. Ants hate the smell of vinegar. It won’t take long for them to move on to better-smelling quarters. Also keep the spray bottle handy for outdoor trips or to keep ants away from picnic or children’s play areas. If you have lots of anthills around your property, try pouring full-strength vinegar over them to hasten the bugs’ departure. Flowerpots If fire ants plague your yard or patio and you’re tired of getting stung by the tiny attackers, a flowerpot can help you quench the problem. Place the flowerpot upside down over the anthill. Pour boiling water through the drain hole and you’ll be burning down their house. See more uses for Flowerpots.

HAM LAKE

A LONG LEAP • Goyathlay (meaning ‘one who yawns’) was an Apache born in 1829. He married and had three kids. In 1851, Mexican soldiers attacked his encampment, killing many, including Goyathlay’s family. Bent on revenge, the survivors went after the Mexicans. • Goyathlay battled fearlessly and without mercy. The Catholic Mexicans appealed to St. Jerome for help. Afterwards, the remaining Mexicans remarked on the bravery of the Apache warrior. They didn’t know his name, so they gave him a nickname, after the Mexican word for St. Jerome. It stuck. • Goyathlay, now known by his new nickname, became a military leader of his tribe who led many successful skirmishes. In 1886, tired of constant pursuit, he surrendered. He became a celebrity in his old age, and died in 1909. • In 1940, a platoon of paratroopers was nervous about the military’s first mass parachute jump scheduled for the following day. To bolster their courage, they went to a theater to watch a new movie about Goyathlay. Paratrooper Aubrey Eberhardt told his buddies he was going to yell the Apache warrior’s nickname as he bailed out, for inspiration. His buddies decided they would, too. It caught on, and throughout the war, the name was shouted as a battle cry whenever anyone bailed out of a plane. • Today this war whoop can be heard whenever people jump from high places, such as into the local swimming hole. What was Goyathlay’s Mexican nickname? Answer on next page. EMERGENCY BAIL-OUTS • Lt. I. M. Chisov of Russia bailed out of his damaged plane in 1942. With no parachute, he fell 21,980 feet (6.7 km) landing on a steep, snowy mountainside and sliding down. He broke his pelvis and injured his spine but survived

aand recovered. • In 1959, a military pilot name Col. Rankin bailed out of n his single engine plane when the h eengines failed at 46,000 feet (14 kkm). A storm was in progress over the Carolina coast at the time, and he went right through the middle of it. It normally would take a man 13 minutes to fall that far, but Rankin got caught in the updrafts and came to earth 45 minutes later. Fortunately, his parachute opened at 10,000 feet (3 km) and he landed intact. A passing motorist took him to the hospital, where he was treated for frostbite and shock. • In 1955, Pilot George Smith ejected from his disabled plane. That wouldn't have been so bad, except that he was in a F100A Super Sabre jet fighter flying at supersonic speed at 35,000 feet (10.5 km). He became the first person to ever bail-out while traveling faster than the speed of sound. He was flying at 777 mph (1,250 km/hr). On the way down, his clothing was shredded, and his socks, helmet, and oxygen mask ripped off. He experienced a deceleration force of 40 G's, meaning that he weighed an equivalent of 40 times his weight. He was unconscious when he landed in the ocean off the coast of California. By some miracle, there was a boat less than 100 yards away. He was in a coma for a week and spent the next six months in the hospital. • During World War II, Captain J. H. Hedley was in a plane over Germany when the aircraft took a hit. Hedley was sucked out of the plane at 10,000 feet (3 km). The pilot took evasive action by plummeting in a vertical dive. When the plane pulled out of the dive, Hedley landed unhurt on the tail. He hung on till the plane was brought safely to a landing. • During the invasion of Normandy in WWII, thousands of dummies were dropped from planes with parachutes along with the real paratroopers in order to mislead the Germans concerning the size of the fighting force. Q: What did the pig say at the beach on a hot summer's day? A: I'm bacon! Q: How hot is a Los Angeles summer? A: So hot that I saw a fire hydrant chasing a pack of dogs! Q: When do you go at red and stop at green? A: When you're eating a watermelon. Vacationing in Vermont, I picked up the local paper to check out the forecast. It read: Today: Sunny, 76. Tonight: Not so sunny, 55.

● The next time you get caught outside in a hard rain, you can reflect on the fact that each drop that hits you is traveling at about 20 mph.

● Did you ever wonder how the lollipop got its name? A man named George Smith first put the hard treat on the end of a stick, but candy-making wasn’t his only interest. It seems that Smith also had a keen interest in horse racing, and he named the candy after a popular racehorse of the time, Lolly Pop.

● You probably know that the king cobra is one of the deadliest snakes: It can grow up to 18 feet long and is very aggressive, often attacking with little or no provocation. When it rears up to attack, the head can be 4 or 5 feet off the ground, and king cobra’s venom is so deadly that a single bite can kill an elephant. You might not realize, though, that these snakes are protective parents. Both the female and the male stay close to the nest, guarding the eggs from any danger.

● It was American writer and philosopher Elbert Hubbard who made the following sage observation: “Many a man’s reputation would not know his character if they met on the street.”

● Milk produced by a hippopotamus mother is pink.

● In 1973, The Who began a major U.S. tour with a show in San Francisco. As the show was starting, though, drummer Keith Moon collapsed. He was revived, but then collapsed once more. At that point, in an unprecedented move, Pete Townsend asked for volunteers from the audience. Scott Halprin, a 19year-old aspiring drummer, jumped at the chance. He played three numbers with the band, and lead singer Roger Daltry later told Rolling Stone magazine, “That drummer was really good.”

EARLY PIONEERS • The Wright brothers were not the first people to fly a plane. Seven years prior to their 1903 flight, Samuel Pierpont Langley's 16foot (4.8 m) plane travelled three quarters of a mile (1.2 km) and stayed aloft for a minute and a half. The Wright's claim to fame was that they made the first flight that carried a human. Langley's plane was unmanned. • The world's first fatal airplane crash occurred in 1908 when a propeller broke, sending the aircraft plunging 150 feet (45 m) to earth. The pilot escaped with a broken leg, but the single passenger, Lt. Thomas Selfridge of the U.S. Signal Corps, was killed on impact. The pilot was Orville Wright. • Many people mistakenly think Charles Lindbergh made the first transatlantic flight. Actually, he made the first solo transatlantic flight, but many other transatlantic flights were made prior to his May 20-21, 1927 solo flight. For instance, there was Capt. John Alcock and Lt. Arthur Whitten Brown who flew a converted Vimy night bomber from Canada to Ireland on June 14 & 15, 1919.

On June 25, 1953, Horace C. Boren became the first passenger to fly around the world on commercial airlines in less than 100 hours. Come along with Tidbits as we take flight!

● The nation of France was still executing people with the guillotine until 1977.

● When the TV sitcom “The Addams Family” was being cast in the early 1960s, actor John Astin came in to audition for the role of Lurch, the cadaverous butler. He was immediately rejected for the part. As he was leaving the room, though, the producer spotted him, pulled him aside, and immediately offered him the role of Gomez -- the lead. All he had to do was grow a mustache.

● Rattlesnakes can live up to 20 years.

● It was novelist Tom Clancy who made the following sage observation: “The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.”
