Possibly you are the one out of the two Americans who suffers from a chronic illness such as heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disease, arthritis, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, migraines, allergies, asthma or depression. Most Americans suffer from FLC syndrome (feel like crap); with chronic issues of fatigue, brain fog, insomnia and the general feeling of being run down. Frustration comes when you seek out professional help to find a way to better health. You go to your conventional doctor complaining of fatigue, muscle and joint pain, digestive issues and chronic sinus pressure. You are tired of just being put on one drug after another and you are looking for something else. Yet you go to a doctor whose primary training is in drug therapy. To make things worse your doctor ends up referring you on to an ENT, gastroenterologist and a neurologist for your various symptoms. There is no one connecting the dots to see how your symptoms are all interrelated to underlying metabolic and nutritional issues. If you’re looking to be treated and understood as a whole person, if you want to get to the root cause, then you are looking for a doctor who does Functional Medicine. Simply put, Functional Medicine is a science optimizing your health and not just managing disease. Our present disease care system is more interested in giving a name to your symptoms in fancy Latin and then providing you with drugs to suppress these symptoms. This way of thinking about health is completely wrongheaded. Functional Medicine is an entirely different approach, focusing on finding the causes, not treating symptoms. You see there are underlying metabolic issues such as systemic inflammation, free radical damage and insulin resistance that then shows up in different tissues as different symptoms. For example, in the muscles it may show up as painful tight muscle knots, in the skin a rash and in the brain this can manifest as brain fog and mood dysregulation. Taking a drug to suppress the symptoms leaves the underlying damaging metabolic issues to continue to destroy your tissues. For example, you go to the doctor complaining of muscle pain, weight gain, constipation and diarrhea, fatigue, poor sleep, feeling blue almost hopeless because of your lack of vitality. Your doctor then diagnoses you as suffering from depression and fibromyalgia syndrome. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is just Latin for what you told the doctor in the first place, my “muscles and tissues hurt”. Furthermore, depression is not the cause of your symptoms medically it is now the name we give to a collection of symptoms. Also fibromyalgia and depression are not a Cymbalta deficiency, and that drug will do nothing to fix the underlying actual causes of your health issues. Why do we keep going into these conventionally trained doctors who do not hold any answers for the real underlying health problems we suffer from? Possibly it’s habit or it’s the doctor my insurance company pays for but, insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. So how would I and other doctors of Functional Medicine approach your health concerns? First and foremost we need to look to connect the dots and find out what is causing all these different symptoms. After a thorough history, in-depth exam and lab work, we may find markers for systemic inflammation such as increased hsCRP, early signs of insulin resistance because of a HA-1 C is over 5.7, thyroid antibodies destroying the thyroid causing a low thyroid function and findings that point to malabsorption because of using an acid blocker for many years. Food allergy testing may show sensitivity to gluten which had been the source of your reflux and the antibodies to your thyroid. Malabsorption may show up as deficient cellular B12 and folic acid along with deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids all related to the cause of your depression. There is so much more and it can be scary. But it is your body and face it, we are not living in a pristine world. We are being affected by the environment and the institutions surrounding us. Do not wait for the world to have an epiphany, make your own. Taking a functional approach to your FLC syndrome (feel like crap) is a beginning; to help you live a better “I’m in control” happy life, until the end. 763.755.5444 13830 Aberdeen St NE Ham Lake, MN NE corner of Hwy 65 & Bunker Lake Blvd ISLANDS (continued) • Although Australia is completely surrounded by water, geographically it is considered a continent rather than an island. It’s not only too big to be formally classified as an island, it also sits on its own tectonic plate. Because of this, the title of world’s largest island goes to Greenland, a continental island lying on North America’s continental shelf. • Located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, Greenland has an area of 836,330 square miles (2,166,086 sq. km), with 81% of that area covered by an ice sheet. If that ice sheet were to melt away completely, the sea level of the world would rise by more than 23 feet (7 m). Most of the island’s 57,600 people live along the coasts, the only areas that are ice-free. It’s the most sparsely populated country in the world. Although Greenland’s main export is shrimp, the island is rich in natural resources, including zinc, lead, iron, gold, and platinum. Even diamonds are mined there. • Contrast Greenland’s population of 57,600 in 836,330 square miles with that of Sumatra. Sumatra’s area equals about 21% of Greenland’s, yet this island is home to 50 million people! Located in Indonesia, Sumatra is the world’s sixth largest island, but is the world’s largest volcanic island. • Just south of the Arctic Circle is the second largest volcanic island, Iceland, home to the world’s largest concentration of geysers. Over 14% of its surface is covered by lakes and glaciers, and there are 130 volcanic mountains on the island. Iceland has the second-highest quality of life in the world, as well as one of the world’s highest life expectancies. • Sitting in the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil is MarajĎŒ, the world’s largest island that is completely surrounded by fresh water. It’s about onethird the size of New York state, and compares in size to Switzerland. About 250,000 live on MarajĎŒ, which lies right on the equator. • The official name for a group, cluster, or collection of geographically-related islands is archipelago. Familiar archipelagos include the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, the Caymans, Indonesia, the British Isles, and the Philippines. The Philippines consist of more than 7,100 islands. Total land area is about the same as the state of Arizona, yet its population exceeds 97 million people. About 20 measurable earthquakes occur there daily. Over 170 individual languages are spoken in the Philippines. • The Guinness Book of Records lists Bishop Rock as the world’s smallest island with a building on it. It’s 151 feet (46 m) long by 52.5 feet (16 m) wide and

With so much materialism surrounding the holidays, it’s nice when you can give a gift that accomplishes more than just adding to someone’s collection of stuff --especially when it comes to gifts for impressionable children. Of course, anyone who has spent more than five minutes around a child knows they can be hard to please, which makes finding a gift that’s both entertaining and educational a tall order. Although there are more than three dozen islands situated in the waters of New York City, Manhattan is the one we hear the most about. Here are some facts about the smallest of the city’s five boroughs. • About 1.6 million people live in Manhattan, about 70,500 people per square mile. • Manhattan was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians. It’s believed that explorer Giovanni da Verrazano was the first European to visit the island. But the area was not mapped until after the exploration of Englishman Henry Hudson in 1609. • A Dutch fur trading settlement on neighboring Governors Island was founded in 1624, and the following year, the Dutch began construction of a fort on Manhattan, an island they called New Amsterdam. This 1625 completion is recognized as the birthdate of New York City. • In 1626, the Dutch colonists purchased Manhattan from the Native Americans with trade goods valued at about $24. In modern currency, this would be about $1,000. • The 778-acre Central Park, nestled in the center of Manhattan opened in 1857. Today the park is 840 acres and receives about 35 million visitors every year. • The opening of the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River in 1883 and the launch of the New York subway system in 1904 revolutionized travel in and out of Manhattan. • In the midst of the Great Depression, New York City was building some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. The Empire State Building was completed in 1931, the

Chrysler Building in 1930, and the G.E. Building in 1933. Manhattan was home to the tallest building in the world, with nine different buildings owning the title, including the Singer Building, MetLife, the Woolworth and Chrysler buildings, the Empire State Building and the Twin Towers. The new World Trade Center, scheduled to open next year will stand 1,776 feet (541 m) and will be the tallest skyscraper in the U.S. • Fifth Avenue is lined with prestigious stores, such as Tiffany, Saks Fifth Avenue, Cartier, and Lord & Taylor, and is ranked as one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. Yet in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was flanked by extravagant mansions of the rich and famous, including Andrew Carnegie, William A. Clark, and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt’s home on the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 57th was six stories tall and was and remains the largest private residence ever built in New York City. It was demolished in 1927 and is the current site of the Bergdorf Goodman department store. William A. Clark’s 121room home cost $7 million to build in 1907 (about $162 million in today’s money), and only stood for 20 years. Only a very few mansions have survived, including Carnegie’s home, which is now the Cooper Hewitt Museum. • The annual New Year’s Eve ball drop took place in Times Square for the first time in 1907, and the celebration has been held every year since. The two largest gatherings in Times Square have been the August, 1945 celebration marking the end of World War II, and the millennial celebration on December 31, 1999. About two million crowded downtown Manhattan to welcome the new century.

important for people to realize that in most cases hospice services are fully paid for including sources from Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veteran’s Administration. There is a huge and aging veteran population in the United States. As this population ages and hospice awareness increases, more resources will be necessary to address the growing demand for end of life services. Knowingly, the Department of Veterans Affairs has developed a hospice criterion which is specifically designed to meet the needs of its veterans. In collaboration with the VA, a program called We Honor Veterans was developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. This program focuses on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgement of the service our veterans gave. What does hospice provide? Barb Ouellette, RN, and Mary T. Inc. Assistant Director of Home Health Care & Hospice explained the goals of the hospice team: “We provide quality of life and comfort at the end of life. Hospice care includes addressing pain management issues until comfort is achieved. We are committed to providing individualized service that creatively fulfills the needs of the patient. Furthermore, we take the pressure off family and loved ones by relieving them of many of the details associated with terminal illness. We also focus on assisting the client in strengthening relationships with loved ones at the end of life.” A well-known service provider to senior communities and persons with disabilities, with multiple facilities throughout and beyond the Anoka County area, Mary T. Hospice has engaged in a concentrated effort to educate the general public and veterans alike about the benefits of hospice. Mary T. believes the quality of life for the patient and family can be improved with an interdisciplinary approach to hospice care and, whenever possible, bringing the care to where the patient lives, further enhancing their comfort and end of life experience for them and their family. The care team includes the primary care physician, medical director, a registered nurse/case manager, a social worker and a spiritual care provider. All this combines to ensure that whether the patient is in a private home, long term care facility, or other alternative residence, they will be provided timely and compassionate care. Bits that Bite Three Wise Women (as opposed to Three Wise Men) What would have happened if there had been Three Wise WOMEN instead of Three Wise MEN? The WOMEN would have: Asked directions - Arrived on time - Helped deliver the baby - Cleaned the stable - Made a casserole and - Brought practical gifts (like diapers!)

Did you know that one in six people lives on an island? This week, Tidbits takes a little island getaway, bringing you facts about “any land mass completely surrounded by water.” • Not all islands are alike! Continental islands lie on the shelf of a continent, for example, Greenland, which lies on the shelf of North America, and Great Britain on that of Europe. Oceanic islands do not sit on a continental shelf. Most, such as the Hawaiian Islands, were formed by volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Islands, a 137-island chain, are the exposed peaks of a massive undersea mountain range. They were visited by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778, and he dubbed them the Sandwich Islands after his friend, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. • Each of the eight main Hawaiian Islands has a nickname. The largest, Hawaii, is of course, the Big Island. Next in size, Maui, is the Valley Isle, followed by Oahu, the Gathering Place. Fourth in size, Kauai is the Garden Isle, Molokai is the Friendly Isle, Lanai is nicknamed the Pineapple Isle, Niihau is the Forbidden Isle, and the smallest of the eight, Kaho’olawe is the Target Isle.
