REPTILES (continued): • The frilled-neck lizard makes its home in Australia. It takes its name from the large pleated skin flap around its neck. Normally the frill stays folded against the lizard’s body, but when the lizard feels threatened, it unfurls its bright orange and red frill, opens its mouth wide, exposing a bright yellow interior, and hisses. The lizard also displays this behavior during courtship. When the frill is folded against the body, this lizard is a non-descript brown or gray with splotches of darker color, giving it the appearance of tree bark, enabling it blend in and hide from predators. It’s a large lizard, with the average adult reaching a length of about 3 feet (0.9 m). • The Chinese water dragon, native to the rainforests of Thailand, Indochina, and China, is a colorful lizard that can grow up to a length of 3.3 feet (1 m). Although some are green, others are purple with an orange stomach and diagonal stripes of turquoise on the body. Their throats might be blue, purple, or peach, with either a solid color or with stripes. This carnivorous reptile likes to dine on mice, goldfish, quail chicks, and earthworms. In captivity, a Chinese water dragon might live to the age of 20. • A gecko lizard’s long toes have tiny adhesive pads that are forked at the ends, which enable them to cling to any surface, includingceilings, glass, and other smooth vertical surfaces. The flying gecko, found only in southeast Asia, has an intricate system of membrane flaps along its side, tail, and feet. Although they don’t truly fly, they can glide from tree to tree, using their webbed feet and flaps to generate lift. This little lizard, about 7 inches (17.8 cm) long, can “fly” up to 200 feet (60 m).

DEAR LINDA: There is no requirement to register any pet as a support animal, and there is no “official” registry for support and therapy pets. Do not get sucked into paying money to any online “registry” that says you have to do it. However, you should have something that identifies your cats as support animals, so that you can travel with them and keep them in otherwise pet-free apartments. The most accepted document is a letter from a doctor or therapist stating that you need a support animal. Most airlines will accept this document, as do most landlords or apartment managers. The letter does not need to specify the condition for which you need support.
Apartment communities that are up to date with housing regulations are likely to have a clause in their lease stating what they will accept as proof of a support animal. Go to www.hud.gov for the latest guidelines on support and therapy pets in housing. Now, here’s my caveat: Support and therapy pets are NOT service animals. They do not fall under ADA rules regarding service animals. Stores, restaurants and airlines do NOT have to let them inside or on board. However, many businesses are accommodating support animals, because it’s a gray area right now. It’s important, therefore, to be a good steward when traveling with your pet. Keep small pets in carriers next to you. Make sure support dogs’ obedience training is on point. If you’re concerned about your pets’ behavior in public, consider leaving them at home. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com REPTILES (continued): • There are nearly 180 different species of chameleons, members of the iguana order, that are found primarily in Africa, with many species on the island of Madagascar. A few others are native to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They don’t live naturally anywhere in North or South America, and if any are found on those continents, they’re the offspring of escaped pets from their native habitat. Although we might think that chameleons can change color to match their surroundings, what really happens is that they live in an environment that matches their normal color. They don’t change to whatever color they are sitting on. However, the skin does change color when they are frightened, angry, or stressed, or as a reaction to changes in light, temperature, or humidity. A male can change color to make himself more attractive to a female, and that female can use her color to accept or reject his advances. Her color can also reveal a pregnancy. In addition to changing color, chameleons have another exclusive ability no other animals have. Their eyes move independently of each other, and can look in two different directions at the same time, giving them a full 360-degree view. The smallest chameleon in the world is just half an inch (16 mm) long, tiny enough to sit on the head of a match. • There are more than 3,000 species of snakes worldwide, but the good news is that only about 375 are venomous. Of those, about 250 can kill their prey with one bite. When they strike, they have nearly a 100% success rate. However, most species are actually helpful since they keep the rodent population under control.

This cricket table has the expected triangular top and three legs. It was made in England in the 19th century. The 25 1/2-inch high table sold for $1,170. .
Cricket Tables Never Wobbled “For sale, typical English cricket table,” said the auction ad. But what is a cricket table? Is it used for sports like the English game of cricket? Does it have anything to do with the insect? No. The cricket table was first named and used during the 16th century. The French word “criquet” refers to its stick legs. And the table has three legs so it can be used where the floor is uneven. Remember your geometry -- three points determine a plane, so all three legs of any length will touch the floor at the same time, while a four-legged table might wobble. Most antique cricket tables have triangular or round tops. Some have shelves halfway down the legs. It was a country furniture idea, and tables can be found that are made of sycamore, ash, oak, elm, cherry or walnut woods. A few have three drop leaves. In 2016, Thomaston Auctions sold an elaborate oak cricket table with sausage-turned legs and a T-stretcher for $1,170. *** Q: I have a Hummel boy doll but can’t find one that looks like it online. It’s 11 1/2 inches high and
made of rubber with painted eyes and molded hair. His head, arms and legs are in very good condition. There is a mark on the back with a bee inside a V. Can you tell me anything about its age and value? A: Your doll is from the 1700 Series, which was made from 1953 until about 1959. He is called Peterle and is marked with the “full bee” trademark used by the W. Goebel Porcelain Co. of Germany from 1950 until 1959. The dolls were sold dressed in cloth outfits, some with small accessories like a goose, stein or travel pack. It appears your doll’s clothing is a combination of pieces from other Hummel dolls and doesn’t have any accessories. Dolls like yours sell for $25 to $50. *** Q: How much is the book “My Turn at Bat, The Story of My Life” by Ted Williams as told to John Underwood worth? I have a copy autographed by Ted Williams. A: This book was first published in 1969, when Ted Williams was manager of the Washington Senators. It recently has been republished with new pictures. A copy of the 1969 edition autographed by Ted Williams sold at auction this year for $132. *** TIP: Leather that crumbles to red powder has “red rot.” It is caused by absorption of sulfur dioxide and cannot be stopped.

Once declared extinct, 11 of the small nonvenomous reptiles were discovered in 2012. Anywhere from 18 to 100 are believed to be in existence. • Rattlers have heat-sensing pits on the sides of their head between the nostril and eye. These enable them to detect warm-blooded prey, (their favorites are rodents and lizards), and they can detect differences in temperature to a fraction of a degree. When the rattlesnake shakes its rattles, it’s trying to warn or scare away predators. Every time the snake sheds its skin, another ring is added to its rattles. Beware, because even though young rattlesnakes don’t yet have rattles, they are just as dangerous as the adults. • A turtle’s shell, which is made up of 60 different bones, has two parts, the upper section, called the carapace, and a lower part, known as the pastron. The two parts are joined together by a bony ridge, and covered with plates that offer strength and protection. • The African spurred tortoise is also known as the sulcata tortoise, the third-largest species of tortoise in the world. This unusual reptile lives in the southern edge of the Sahara desert and reaches a length of 33 inches (83 cm) and a weight of more than 230 lbs. (105 kg). In an attempt to reach levels of higher moisture than the arid desert provides, the tortoise engages in aestivation, a process of excavating 30-inch-deep (76 cm) burrows in the ground, connecting to an underground tunnel system extending more than 10 feet (3.05 m). Here the tortoise spends the hottest part of the day. Because the sulcata has a pleasant disposition, it is popular as a pet, and can live more than 50 years in captivity.

In 1912, Japan gifted the United States with 3,020 cherry blossom trees. This week, Tidbits focuses on these beautiful trees’ characteristics and history. • Japan’s gift in 1912 weren’t the first cherry blossom trees to hit the North American continent. In 1906, Dr. David Fairchild, an official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, imported 100 flowering cherry trees from a Japanese nursery and planted them on his own property in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After two years of testing the trees’ hardiness in the area, Fairchild ordered 300 more trees, which were given to the schools in the District of Columbia to plant in their yards to honor Arbor Day.. • In 1909, trees were planted along the Potomac River beginning at the Lincoln Memorial. The following year, the City of Tokyo donated 2,000 cherry trees to be planted along the River. However, upon the trees’ arrival, it was discovered they were infested with insects and disease, and all the trees were burned. The 1912 gift was a replacement for the diseased trees. • In the Spring of 1912, First Lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Japanese Ambassador, Viscountess Chinda, planted two cherry trees on the northern bank in Washington, D.C.’s East Potomac park, trees that still stand in their original site. • Washington, D.C.’s first annual Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1935, coinciding with the trees’ early spring full bloom. There are now 11 different varieties of cherry blossom trees in the Park.

That honor belongs to Newark, New Jersey’s Branch Brook Park, the oldest county park in America, where about 4,300 trees are planted. Philadelphia also has more than 2,000 flowering cherry trees, half of which were gifted by the Japanese government in 1926 to honor the 150th anniversary of America’s independence. • The streets and parks of Vancouver, Canada are lined with an estimated 50,000 flowering cherry trees, many of which were also gifts from Japan. But the title of Cherry Blossom Capital of the World belongs to Macon, Georgia, a city with more than 300,000 trees scattered throughout its streets and parks. A local realtor discovered a tree in his Macon backyard in 1949, and made it his mission to bring more of the trees to the community. • Although there are more than 200 varieties of blossoming cherries, the most popular variety in Japan is the Yoshino. The Japanese call the cherry blossoms “sakura.” The trees belong to the rose family, with the average tree about 25 feet (7.62 m) tall. With special care, they can reach upwards of 50 feet (15.2 m), with a 40-foot-wide (12.2 m) canopy. It’s primarily Yoshinos that line D.C.’s National Mall and the Potomac waterfront. • The date for the peak blossoming in Washington, D.C. is around April 4. The blooming period lasts about two weeks. • Cherry blossoms and leaves are frequently used as food ingredients in Japan. Blossoms are pickled in salt and vinegar and used in a sweet bun called anpan. Salt-pickled blossoms are also boiled in water, a beverage called sakurayu, served at festive events

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties REPTILES GALORE • The smallest turtle is the 4-inch (101 cm) Bog Turtle. The largest, the Leatherback Sea Turtle, averages about 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) in length, with a weight of 1,100 lbs. (500 kg). However, the largest Leatherback ever recorded was almost 10 feet (3.05 m) long and weighed 2,019 lbs. (916 kg). For all its immense size, the Leatherback has very delicate jaws that are easily damaged by anything other than soft-bodied animals. Their diet is made up almost entirely of jellyfish, which are composed mostly of water and are a poor source of nutrients. • North America’s biggest freshwater turtle is the alligator snapping turtle, a reptile that is 2.5 feet (0.76 m) long and weighs 200 lbs. (90.7 kg). Its powerful jaws, sharply-hooked beak, and powerful bearlike claws make this creature a formidable predator for fish, frogs, snakes, clams, crayfish, and smaller turtles. A remarkable characteristic makes its hunting easier – its tongue has an appendage that, when wriggled, closely resembles a worm, fooling its prey into swimming directly into range of the snapping turtle. • If you’re listening to a turtle or tortoise, you’ll hear some interesting noises. Generally, males grunt, while females hiss. But South America’s red-footed tortoise clucks like a chicken, while male Travancore tortoises of southeast Asia seeking a mate make a high-pitched whining sound much like an electric motor. Central America’s giant musk turtle yelps like a dog when it is startled or under attack.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com REPTILES GALORE (continued): • Early Spanish explorers and settlers in Florida gave the alligator its name. This scaly reptile takes its name from the Spanish word largarto, meaning “the lizard.” The menacing-looking mouth of an American alligator holds between 74 and 80 teeth at a time, but it might go through 2,000 to 3,000 teeth over its lifetime. Although they seem to have a reputation for attacking humans, alligators are actually quite solitary and very rarely do they go after humans, usually only when provoked or when protecting their young. Their diet consists of fish, turtles, snakes, birds, and small mammals. Occasionally they eat other alligators. An alligator’s jaws can clamp shut with enough force to break a person’s arm. But the muscles that open its mouth are very weak, so much so that a man can hold a full-grown alligator’s mouth closed with one hand. And although they move very quickly through water, alligators are slow-moving on land. • Although alligators and crocodiles belong to the same order, Crocodilia, there are distinct differences in their appearance and habitat. Crocodiles have long, narrow, V-shaped snouts, while alligators’ snouts are wider and U-shaped. This is related to the diet of each, with the alligator having more crushing power to capture prey such as turtles. The narrower snout of the croc is better suited for fish and small mammals. The color of a crocodile is an olive brown shade, while an alligator is darker, almost black in color. Their environments differ as well. Alligators dwell in fresh water, such as ponds, rivers, wetlands, lakes, and swamps, while crocs make their home in salt water.

By Keith Roach, M. D, A Fib Increases Risk of Blood Clots, Stroke DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking warfarin (Coumadin) for two years now. I started taking it after a knee-replacement surgery, when they discovered I had atrial fibrillation. I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol that are controlled with medication, and diabetes controlled with diet. Do you think I need to be on warfarin if my blood pressure and cholesterol are well-controlled? Before the surgery I was on two 81-mg tablets of aspirin. Could I safely go back? -- J.K. ANSWER: Doctors recommend warfarin or other anticoagulant medication for people with atrial fibrillation -- a chaotic condition of the electrical system of the heart -- if they have more than minimal risk for blood clots and stroke. Older age, female sex, high blood pressure and diabetes (even if controlled), congestive heart failure and history of stroke or vascular disease all increase risk for stroke in people with atrial fibrillation, also known as A fib. Although I don’t know how old you are, just being female and having high blood pressure and diabetes puts you in a risk category where you would normally be recommended to stay on anticoagulation. Never stop warfarin (or similar medication) without first discussing it with your physician. READERS: Atrial fibrillation affects some 2 million Americans and becomes more common as we age. To learn more about A fib, order the booklet on Heartbeat Irregularities by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a post-menopausal woman (12 years since my last cycle). Last month, I had a light period that lasted over a week. I have seen my OB/GYN, who sent me for a pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound. The only thing it showed was a thickening of the lining. I then had a biopsy, and the results came back showing normal cells. He seems stumped, and said that if it happens again, he’d suggest a D and C. But, as he acknowledged, a 66-year-old woman isn’t supposed to be having periods. Obviously, he and I both know something isn’t right but just don’t know what it might be. Any thoughts? -- D.H. ANSWER: Any bleeding after menopause needs to be evaluated, since it can represent uterine cancer about 10 percent of the time. Fortunately, that is very unlikely with a normal biopsy. Since you did have a thickened endometrium, it is possible that you have endometrial hyperplasia, though this should have shown up on the biopsy. An ultrasound should have picked up a polyp. If it does happen again, you should certainly have further evaluation. Even though a negative biopsy is very good evidence that there isn’t a cancer, no test is perfect. About 20 percent of women with persistent bleeding after a normal biopsy had cancer or a precancerous lesion. This occasionally happens when the uterine cancer is in one focal place, rather than present throughout the lining of the uterus. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. * On Oct. 26, 1825, the 425-mile Erie Canal opens, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the canal was dug by Irish laborers who had to rely on primitive tools. They were paid $10 a month, and barrels of whiskey were placed along the canal route as encouragement. * On Oct. 27, 1873, farmer Joseph Glidden submits to the U.S. Patent Office his design of a fencing wire with sharp barbs, an invention that will forever change the face of the American West. * On Oct. 28, 1918, sailors steadfastly refuse to obey orders from the German Admiralty to go to sea in one final attack on the mighty British navy. In total, 1,000 mutineers were arrested despite repeated orders, leaving the Imperial Fleet immobilized. * On Oct. 25, 1929, Albert B. Fall, secretary of the Interior, is found guilty of accepting a bribe while in office. Fall accepted a $100,000 interest-free “loan” in exchange for granting a valuable oil lease on federal land. * On Oct. 24, 1969, movie star Richard Burton dazzles wife Elizabeth Taylor when he buys her a 69-carat Cartier diamond ring costing $1.5 million. The famous diamond was the product of a fight in which Burton called Taylor’s hands large and ugly. * On Oct. 29, 1998, nearly 40 years after he became the first American to orbit the Earth, Sen. John Glenn, Jr., is launched into space again as a payload specialist aboard the shuttle Discovery. At 77, Glenn is the oldest human ever to travel in space. * On Oct. 23, 2002, about 50 Chechen rebels storm a Moscow theater, taking some 700 people hostage, and demand that Russian military forces withdraw from predominately Muslim Chechnya. Russian special forces pumped in a narcotic gas, knocking nearly all of the terrorists and hostages unconscious. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

MIcro-Baked Apples A quick and easy update on an old favorite -- baked apples. 4 large apples such as Fuji or Gala (about 8 ounces each) 4 teaspoons margarine or butter 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup maple syrup 1. Remove cores from apples but don’t cut through to bottom. Beginning at stem end, peel apples one-third of way down. Stand apples in 8-by-8 inch glass baking dish. Fill each apple with 1 teaspoon margarine and 1 tablespoon cranberries. Pour maple syrup over and around apples. 2. Cover with vented plastic wrap and cook on Medium-High (70 percent power) 10 to 11 minutes or until apples are very tender. Let stand, covered, 5 minutes. Makes 4 servings.

* It was beloved 20th-century American poet, memoirist and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou who made the following sage observation: “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” * You might be surprised to learn that in terms of holiday retail sales, Halloween is second only to Christmas.

* If you’re a fan of beer and/or space, you might be interested in Celeste Jewel Beer. This ale, created by Delaware-based Dogfish Head Brewery, has a unique ingredient: moon dust. Yep -- lunar meteorites were crushed into dust, then steeped in Dogfish Head’s Oktoberfest offering. The resulting libation, it’s said, possesses a subtle but complex earthiness, with notes of doughy malt, toasted bread, subtle caramel and a light herbal bitterness.

* Bayreuth Festspielhaus is an opera house north of Bayreuth, Germany. The venue is dedicated to the performance of works by Richard Wagner, and the 19th-century German composer himself chose and adapted the design. A key component is the seating: Not only are the seats arranged to give all attendees an equal and uninterrupted view of the stage, but they’re also rather uncomfortable. It’s been reported that Wagner intentionally chose exceptionally hard wooden seats to prevent the audience from treating his operas as fun. *** Thought for the Day: “One of the primary tests of the mood of a society at any given time is whether its comfortable people tend to identify, psychologically, with the power and achievements of the very successful or with the needs and sufferings of the underprivileged.” -- Richard Hofstadter (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Time for Medicare Open Enrollment
Medicare has open enrollment every year between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. It’s the only time you can make changes to your existing plans. Making decisions about Medicare can be tough because once you make any changes, you have to live with them for a year. Here are a few things to know: * When you sign up during open enrollment, coverage will start Jan. 1, 2018. * If you’ve already had Medicare, you’ll receive a Medicare & You booklet in the mail. Spend the time between now and December reviewing it and deciding if you need to make any changes. * By now you should have received notices in the mail as well, either a Notice of Change or Evidence of Coverage, and maybe both. These will tell you whether there are changes to your existing plan and whether the costs are changing. * If you go with an Advantage plan, you’ll also likely need a Part D drug plan to go along with it. If you have an Advantage plan and don’t like it, now is the time to make a change. * Many people who like their current plan do nothing and are automatically re-enrolled, but beware: There might be changes in the plan’s cost and coverage that you won’t know about unless you read the notices. To review other possible plans, go online to www.medicare.gov and look for the plan-finder tool. Best bet: If this is your first time signing up, or if you know you need to make changes to your plan but need help, get advice. There’s too much at stake to just pick a plan you haven’t studied. On the Medicare website, look for contacts and select your state, then look for State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Or call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE. Here are just a few of the sports the grants have covered: triathlon, table tennis, basketball, rowing, martial arts, swimming, rafting, wheelchair rugby, archery, judo, climbing, fishing, soccer, powerlifting and slalom. This year the grants covered events in both summer (kayaking, surfing, sailing) and winter (skiing, curling, hockey), sports clinics, Golden Age games (seniors over age 55), bowling, shooting and cycling, a creative arts festival and wheelchair games. The programs offered get bigger every year. Interested in participating? For one thing, it’s a lot of fun, and you’ll meet others with the same challenges, goals and determination. If you think you’re not quite up to it yet, talk to your clinical team about what you can do to get ready to participate in adaptive programs. And just so you know ... a new study of adaptive sports found that benefits included increased employment, self-confidence and a peer-education system. Add in independence, reduced need for pain and depression medication and fewer secondary medical conditions, and it’s worth checking out. To learn more, go online to www.va.gov/ adaptivesports. If you’ll be training at the Paralympic level, there is a monthly stipend to help with expenses, if you qualify. Check the website for details. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
