We’ve all seen it nearly every day of our lives. This week, Tidbits is full of “bet you didn’t know that” facts about the moon. •The moon is 225,745 miles (363,301 km) from Earth. If you were able to plan a trip there, it would be about a two-day trip on a rocket or a 625-hour ride on a 747 jet flying at 400 mph (644 km/hr). If you could drive your car there, it would take 135 days traveling at 70 mph (112 km/hr). •Driving around the circumference of the moon, 6,790 miles (10,864 km), is about equal to a trip from New York to London and back. The moon is about 27% the size of Earth, with an area of 14,658,000 square miles (37,932,000 sq. km). That’s about 9.4 billion acres. •Temperatures on the moon vary from 273 degrees F (134 C) at the hottest time of the day to -244 degrees F (-153C) at night. A day on the moon from sunrise to sunrise is about 708 hours. It rotates on its axis at a speed of about 10 mph (16 km/hr). Compare this with Earth, which rotates at about 1,000 mph (1,609 km/hr). Yet both the moon and Earth complete their orbit in about the same amount of time. turn the page for more! • The average speed at which the moon orbits the Earth is 2,287 mph (3,680 km/hr.) •We only see about 59% of the moon’s Turn the page for more!

surface from Earth. The pattern of the moon’s rotation causes the same side to face Earth at all times. What we frequently Issue: 2012 call the “dark side” of the moon (that part we can’t see) should really be referred to as the “far side.” It has only been photographed from spacecraft. The surface is covered by a mantle made up of an 825-mile-thick (1,330 km) layer of iron and magnesium-rich rock known as regolith. It’s been pounded by meteors, asteroids, and comets, which have created countless craters across its expanse. The widest craters are 140 miles (225 km) in diameter and are as deep as 15,000 ft. (4,500 m). There are mountains standing as high as 16,000 ft. (5,000 m). It’s estimated that the moon weighs about 81 quintillion tons (74 sextillion kg). •Although the moon looks round to us, it’s really egg-shaped. As we look at it, the smaller end of the egg is pointed toward us. It appears to be about the same size as the sun, but it’s actually 400 times smaller. Because the moon is 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, the two appear about the same size. The moon is actually moving away from Earth about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) a year. •Gravity on the moon is just 1/6 that of Earth. This means if you weigh 120 lbs. (54.4 kg) on Earth, you weigh only 20 lbs. (9.1 kg) on the moon. And if you don’t feel like dieting, Continued on page 6

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You may be busy as a bee but not too busy to think about the birds and bees. The pressure to meet a deadline or irritations might slow you down in the week ahead, but you will have plenty of company. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Two heads are better than one, just as two sets of hands are better than one. In the upcoming week, call on handy helpers to get a job done or brainstorm with congenial people. Work side by side with others. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Show off your knowledge. Early in the week, you can offer good advice or receive it because people trust in your talents. You may have the wherewithal to perform a good deed when sympathies are aroused. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Launch your ship or your plans. Make crucial decisions that affect your finances in the early part of the week, when your judgment is at its best. A mild flirtation could lead to a serious romantic relationship. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Take advantage of inspiration and raise your sights higher. A deep and abiding faith in others will act as an anchor if storms blow you off course. The people you meet the first half of the week are worthwhile. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Tell it like it is. Spell things out clearly and discuss plans with loved ones early this week to prevent misunderstandings. Indulge an appetite for the good things in life; get in the hot tub or visit the spa. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Make it by mixing in your mojo. You’ll be able to persuade others at work to cooperate with you and listen to your ideas. Focus on family ties and romantic outings in the second half of the week. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Dive in and determine what you deserve. It’s never wise to melt the plastic off your credit card by overworking it, but you should enjoy at least one special treat in the week ahead. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Teamwork can overcome challenges this week. If too many tasks are heaped on your plate make an effort to enlist other people to help out. Offer assistance when others need a helping hand. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Cooperation from others in the early part of the week may give you the leverage needed to get a backlog of business affairs in order. Allocate time sensibly so there’s room for romance. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Deep discussion draws dollars nearer. Make good use of time spent with partners and family this week, as they will be able to provide beneficial advice. You could strike it rich with a good idea. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Whip it up. Smooth talkers will get their ideas across in the week ahead. Loved ones will listen with a compassionate ear. Show your affection by cooking up some family entertainment.

Adopting a pet

Moose Jaw Glass

Think you are ready to bring a pet home? Here are a few thing to consider when deciding whether to adopt. Check out the Moose Jaw Humane Society’s website at or visit our Facebook page to see some of our adoptable animals. Visit the Shelter during viewing hours to see if we have a pet you might be interested in adopting. While you are at the Shelter, fill out and submit the adoption application form.If you rent your property, please include a signed letter from your landlord stating that you can have the pet in your home. Please note that any animals you currently own must be spayed or neutered before adopting a shelter pet. We suggest that you spend some time with the pet you choose to be sure it is right for you. We provide a private room where you can spend some time visiting with your future pet. If you are considering adopting a dog, you might even decide to take it for a walk. We recommend you bring in all family members to meet your potential pet and to check for compatibility. If you are still unsure if the pet is right for you and your family, you may want to consider a trial period for the pet to briefly live with you, before you complete the final adoption process. To help you care for your pet, all the veterinary clinics in Moose Jaw and Assiniboia have agreed to provide you with a free vet-check within three working days after adoption. The purpose of this exam is to ensure that the animal is in good health. In the event that a medical problem is found, the owner is given the option to return the pet to the Shelter or keep the pet and pursue any necessary treatments. The vet-check is also a great opportunity to discuss feeding, vaccination requirements, spaying or neutering and so forth. Adopting a pet into your family can be a big decision, but we are sure the pets will bring you so much joy that you will never regret it.

We would love to share the rest of our lives with just “YOU”

Call 692-1517 for more information

Chinook – 1 yearold spayed female T h i s glamorous lady cat is Chinook, and it’s hard to believe she is still here at the Shelter. Chinook had a litter of six gorgeous fluffy kittens keeping her busy, but she has now been spayed and is ready to live life as the Queen of your castle. Snowy white with dramatic black markings, this girl is the picture of feline elegance. She would be happy to sit on a velvet cushion and just make your house look good!

Marv – 1 year old neutered male This is Marvelous Marv, who is such a charmer, as so many orange cats are. This guy will win your heart the minute you pick him up and he rubs his furry forehead against yours. Marv still has a kittenish charm and sense of fun, so he will bring so much joy and entertainment to your home. He is friendly and outgoing, seems pretty cool with other cats, and is very affectionate. Give him a chance and he will love you forever!

Flora – 3 year old s p a y e d female S w e e t Flora really needs a home this week! This girl is a couple of years old, a lovely Calico short-haired cat who has already been spayed. She is so sweet and affectionate, that she finds the Shelter environment a bit lonely. Her sad meows make all of the staff feel that she would be so, so happy to have a loving home as soon as possible. You won’t be sorry to adopt this dear kitty.

Bailey- 1-2 year old spayed Lab Pitbull cross Bailey wants to please you and can be a mix of coy and tender one minute and ridiculously happy the next. She’s vivacious, bouncy, funny, and full of life! This beautiful girl will steal your heart. We are quickly falling in love with this bigger-than-life kid… Still working on keeping ALL four on the floor. Bailey is eager to please and with the right training we know she will get there with her impulse control. He is looking for a family that is active and is a confident handler. Bailey is slow to build a relationship with men but after building a trust she does well. She still needs some guidance and continued obedience training. Bailey is dog selective and will need a meet and greet if there is another dog in the family.

Josh - 6 month old Lab Pitbull cross Josh gets the prize for the warmest eyes and best-ever ears. This boy just wants to have fun. We always seem to have a least one ‘dork’ in our program, and Josh is happy to fill the bill. He’s a warm-hearted youngster with a great attitude and strong desire to please. Right now, he’s in his bouncy, playful stage and keeps us laughing with puppyish antics. We encourage Josh’s new family to enroll this class clown in training as he still has lessons to learn but with his big desire to please we know that this will be no problem for our little guy! Bouncing and jumpy still Josh is perfectly innocent in his affections - he is just trying to enjoy the best kind of contact in the only way he knew how right now. If you are looking for an adventure Josh is the boy for you!

Lefty - 2-4 year old neutered Lab Retriever cross A cheerful guy - he’s smitten with people and a friend to dogs and cats. Lefty is a big goof who really wants nothing more than to be with his people. Tender and hopeful, Lefty would make the perfect addition to a family that has a dog and is looking to add another. His beautiful coat allows him to spend time outdoors in the cooler weather and looking forward to enjoy a snow day or two with you! Lefty loves people so much that he finds it’s hard to be alone at times. Lefty would do best with a pal to pass the time with when you won’t be home. He’s a simple fellow who adores getting affection and is doing his best to figure everything out so he can be some lucky adopter’s very good boy. Looking for a big boy with a big heart to match? Lefty is here waiting for you!

Counting Practice Here is a simple way to get to know numbers, and counting. Use 10 paper plates and write the numbers 1-10 on each one. Packets of these paper rockets can be found at the dollar store (pack of 25 in the school section) or made with some constructions paper. You use these plates to count just about anything! Take one plate at a time and count the number of rockets as you place them on the plate.

remember that because of gravitational effects, you weigh just a bit less when the moon is directly overhead. •The world first saw close-up TV pictures of the moon’s surface in 1964 when images were sent back by Ranger 7, the first U.S. space probe. •In May, 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated his goal in an address to Congress of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth” by the end of the 1960s. The first manned spacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968, when Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders circled the moon 10 times before heading back to Earth. •The Apollo 11 crew made history in July, 1969 when they made the first landing. On July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. There are very few Americans unfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong later reported that what he actually said was, “that’s one small step for a man…” The crew spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the surface, with 2 hours and 36 minutes outside the craft, walking on the surface. The footprints of the Apollo 11 crew astronauts will remain for thousands of years, considering there is no wind or adverse weather to disturb them. •The Apollo 11 crew collected lunar rocks weighing 842 lbs. (382 kg.). •A total of 12 men have walked on the moon. No one has done so since December, 1972 when Eugene Cernan of the final manned mission to the moon, Apollo 17, became the last man to set foot on the lunar surface. Apollo 17 was the sixth landing of humans on the moon. •Do you know the difference between waxing and waning? During the phases of the moon’s cycle, when it appears to be getting larger, it’s called waxing, while waning is when it appears to get smaller. •If we didn’t have the moon, the oceans would have no tides. Tides rise because of the pull of the moon’s gravity. This gravity is strongest on the side of Earth nearest the moon, and it pulls up the water slightly, which is high tide. On the side of Earth farthest from the moon, the gravity is at its weakest, and the water moves a little away from the moon. •What does it take the create an eclipse? These phenomena occur only when the sun, Earth, and moon are all in a straight line and one blocks the light from another. The official term for this configuration of three celestial bodies is syzygy. A solar eclipse will occur during a new moon, when the moon is between the sun and Earth and blocks the sunlight. A lunar eclipse will occur at the time of a full moon, when Earth is between the sun and the moon, and blocks the sun’s light that would normally light up the moon. •According to folklore, if you see the slim crescent moon over your right shoulder, it’s considered good luck, while seeing it over your left shoulder is unlucky. Legend further states that if you move to a new home during a waning moon, you will never go hungry.

Distracted Driving… What you need to know.

Issue #45

Locations in

Moose Jaw • 1650 Stadacona St W 693-4334 Regina - 359-1964 • Warman - 934-3880

Driving is a tough job. There’s always a lot going on when you’re driving. Being distracted for only a few seconds can present serious risks to you, any passengers, and the public. You can reduce the risks by taking a few easy steps. Before you get in your vehicle •Know your responsibilities •Understand the four types of driver distraction: 1.Looking at something other than the road(e.g..a vehicle collision) 2.Listening to something not related to driving (e.g.. a phone conversation) 3.Handling something other than the wheel(e.g..adjusting aradio or other electronic device) 4.Thinking about sometime other than driving(e.g.,a disagreement at home or at work) •Learn what electronic devices are permitted or banned under local law •Make every trip a planned trip. Before you get on the road, use maps, online services, and the media to check traffic conditions. •Consider alternatives to driving. Where practical, explore options such as teleconferencing, video conferencing, or public transportation. Not only are these alternatives safer for you, they’re better for the environment. Before you turn on the engine •Become familiar with the vehicle’s controls and take a few moments to adjust side and rear-view mirrors, your seat, the radio and the temperature controls. •Record a voicemail message telling callers you are driving and that you will contact them as soon as it is safe. •Safely secure items, especially any electronic devices to avoid temptation and possible distractions. Consider putting your electronic device in the trunk. •Enter directions into your GPS. If you need to reprogram, pull over safely and park. •Calm yourself. Being upset or stressed can lead to poor decisions behind the wheel. When you’re behind the wheel •Operating a motor vehicle requires your full attention. When you’re behind the wheel, driving is your only job. •Keep your eyes on the road. If you must look away, do so quickly. A vehicle moving at 50km/h takes only two seconds to cover the length of a full-sized basketball court. •Do not operate or hold cell phones, MP3 players, portable gaming devices, or other electronic devices while driving. •Do not send or read emails or text messages while driving. •Do not manually program or adjust GPSsystems whether built in to the vehicle or not while driving. Settings must be programmed before driving. •Never reach down, pick up items from the floor, open the glove box, or deal with personal items while driving. These distractions can easily lead to a collision. •If you travel over longer distances plan to take breaks where you can make time-sensitive business calls.

STARTING THIS WEEK: “PLANES”: “Cars” with wings ... that’s largely how this animated Disney fantasy plays, which doesn’t make it completely original though it still supplies entertainment for all ages. Dane Cook voices Dusty Crophopper, a modest plane that wants to complete against much sleeker vehicles in a major race. If you wonder whether he succeeds, it’s possible you’ve never seen a Disney movie before. Among others in the voice cast are Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Brad Garrett, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer (an amusing inclusion, given his “Top Gun” work) and a particularly enjoyable Stacy Keach. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; “Franz’s Song” music video. *** (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“2 GUNS”: A teaming of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg pretty much guarantees action, and that’s just what this tale based on a graphic novel series delivers. The stars play a DEA agent and an NCIS operative, respectively, who both have infiltrated a drug cartel. Cut loose by their bosses after their mutual assignment hits complications, they have to rely on each other to complete the mission and survive. The differences in Washington’s and Wahlberg’s styles work well for them here, and Edward James Olmos does some excellent snarling as the main villain. Paula Patton, Bill Paxton and Fred Ward also appear. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by director Baltasar Kormakur and producer Adam Siegel; deleted and extended scenes. *** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and

“WE’RE THE MILLERS”: After he becomes a crime victim, a drug dealer (“Saturday Night Live” alum Jason Sudeikis) has to get creative in making good on the money and wares he lost in this well-played comedy. To save his hide, he becomes determined to acquire a shipment in Mexico and get back into the U.S. with it, and he enlists several neighbors including a stripper (a very funny Jennifer Aniston) - to pose as his family to help him do it. Emma Roberts, Ed Helms (“The Hangover”), Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn also star. *** (R and unrated versions: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE WORLD’S END”: Yes, humanity at large faces a crisis in the latest satirical teaming from British humorists Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”), along with returning director Edgar Wright ... but The World’s End also is a name of a bar at the end of a pub crawl that the main characters didn’t finish years earlier. Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan and Paddy Considine play the other pals on the quest, which could remain incomplete when a sci-fi scenario on the order of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” develops. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by Pegg and Wright. *** (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE TO DO LIST”: Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) has a good, if not family-friendly, role in this comedy about a book-smart early-1990s teen who decides she needs to become more worldly before heading off to college. She makes a list of life experiences she wants to catch up on, and she quickly realizes she’s outdone herself with her wishes. Connie Britton (“Nashville”) and Clark Gregg play her parents in a cast that also includes “Hart of Dixie” colleagues Rachel Bilson and Scott Porter, as well as Bill Hader, Christopher MintzPlasse (‘’Superbad”) and Andy Samberg. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Hader and writer-director Maggie Carey; deleted scenes; outtakes. *** (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “PARANOIA”: Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman were enemies in “Air Force One,” and they’re not in much better standing with each other in this business-world melodrama. They play rivals, with Liam Hemsworth as a blackmailed pawn between them as he’s coerced into corporate spying. Amber Heard, Richard Dreyfuss and Josh Holloway also appear in the overly complicated tale from director Robert Luketic (“21”), but the reunion of Oldman and Ford is the real show here. ** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
