• When you’re asleep, your body may be resting but your brain certainly isn’t! It remains hard at work constantly giving orders to the body’s various systems to keep it breathing, pumping blood, and digesting. Short-term memories are recorded in the brain during sleep. Did you know that sleeping shortly after learning something new will actually improve your ability to remember it? • Rapid eye movement, or REM sleep, is characterized by rapid and random movement of the eyes and accounts for about 25% of a total night’s sleep, 90 to 120 minutes. Prior to that are stages of light sleep, when our eye movements stop and brain waves are extremely slow. The first period of REM occurs about 90 minutes after a person falls asleep and lasts about 10 minutes. A sleeper will experience about four or five periods of REM, with each lengthening toward morning. Brain activity is heightened and this is the time of intense dreaming.

• It’s a little alarming to know that 23% of commercial airline pilots admit that sleep deprivation affects their performance at least once a week. One-fifth of those surveyed disclosed that they have made serious mistakes as a result. Fourteen percent of truck drivers confess a “near miss” due to lack of sleep, while 44% of them say they never or rarely get enough sleep on work nights.

Z-Z-Z’S (continued): • Sleep deprivation has numerous negative effects on the body’s functions and well-being. A recent Harvard study has tied insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept less than six hours a night. A shortage of sleep can put the body into a state of “high alert,” which can drive up blood pressure, putting a person at risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one extra hour a night can decrease your heart attack risk by 33%. And consider what that extra sleep will do for your family, social, and work relationships when you are less irritable, impatient, anxious, and depressed!

• Staying awake for just 17 hours leads to decreased performance equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. No sleep for 21 hours is comparable to 0.08% blood alcohol content.

• If you’re one of those who kicks and punches while asleep, you are more susceptible to neurological disease. Experts say that “violent sleepers” have a 50% chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease or dementia and should consult a neurologist to diagnose the problem.

• How do you know if you’re sleep deprived? A sure sign is if it takes you less than five minutes to fall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to Hands On Professional Training tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. • t’s estimated that sleeplessness contributes to one in six fatal highway accidents. It seems that men are more likely than women to drive while drowsy and twice as likely as women to fall asleep while driving. Also related to gender, women need about an hour more sleep per night, yet are twice as likely to have insomnia. Unfortunately, the loss of that hour, coupled with stress level, biological stages, and responsibilities makes them more prone to depression.

• What about those folks who never seem to need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning? These individuals are awakened by the release of a stress hormone called adrencorticotrophin as they unconsciously anticipate the stress of waking up.

• Even an increase in wrinkles can occur when you don’t get enough rest. Your body releases extra cortisol, the “stress hormone” when you don’t get enough rest. Cortisol breaks

• Studies indicate that the risk of cardiovascular disease declines significantly when a person regularly sleeps seven hours a night.

• A lack of sleep decreases your attention and concentration and inhibits the cementing of memories, so that you cannot remember what you learn from day to day. A scientific study has determined that a 60 to 90 minute nap can be as beneficial as a full night’s sleep for learning a new skill. A “power nap” can improve alertness, creativity, productivity, motor skills, and accuracy, as well as reduce stress and risk of heart attack, and aid in weight loss.

• Lack of sufficient sleep can even lead to obesity! The hormones leptin and ghrelin are instrumental in controlling feelings of hunger and fullness. Inadequate sleep can increase production of ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite, raising the sensation of hunger by as much as 25%. Leptin signals the brain when the body is full, but not enough shut-eye drives leptin levels down. Combine these two and it’s a recipe for obesity.

the one that makes us sleepy. When there is less light, the clock tells the brain to produce more melatonin, resulting in drowsiness. When a person’s work hours are scheduled during the normal sleep period, it’s difficult to stay awake, but it can also be a health risk. It’s believed that melatonin protects the body against cancer. For those who are exposed to light at night, melatonin levels are reduced, and researchers believe those people are more prone to colon and breast cancer.

• We each have an internal “master clock” in our brains that coordinates the rhythm of our body’s functions. Known as the “circadian clock,” it is affected by external environmental factors, with light as the main factor influencing our 24-hour circadian cycle. These rhythms influence our sleep cycles, hormone release, and body temperature, and function best with a normal light-dark cycle. This master clock controls the productions of the hormone melatonin,

• If you think that drinking coffee will help you stay awake, consider that those folks who drink four or more caffeinated beverages on a daily basis have a higher risk for sleep apnea.

One of the most popular and beloved First Ladies in American history, Jacqueline Kennedy was a symbol of style and elegance. Learn more about the life of a member of one of America’s most famous families.

TRY US & SEE THE DIFFERENCE!

• Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy was the first First Lady to be born in a hospital. The daughter of a wealthy stockbroker, Jackie experienced a privileged childhood full of ballet lessons, French lessons, and equestrian training and events. At age 15, she was enrolled at the prestigious Miss Porter’s School, a Connecticut boarding school established in 1843 that stressed demanding academic courses, as well as proper manners and social skills. During her senior year, Jackie was named “Debutante of the Year” by the local newspaper.

JACKIE KENNEDY

• Jackie’s choice of college was Vassar with studies in history, literature, art, and French, spending her junior year studying in Paris. Following a transfer to George Washington University and subsequent graduation, she took a job at the Washington Times-Herald photographing and interviewing local citizens. One of her final assignments with the paper was covering the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. • Jackie met Massachusetts senator-elect John F. Kennedy at a 1952 dinner party after he “leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a date.” They were married the following year. • Although she always wished to write a novel, instead she encouraged her husband to write Profiles in Courage, which she helped him edit, a book that won the Pulitzer Prize. • Jackie suffered a miscarriage in 1955, and delivered a stillborn daughter, Arabella in 1956. Daughter Caroline was born the following year. In 1960, John Kennedy was elected the 35th president of the United States, and three weeks later their son John, Jr. was born. • Shortly after the inauguration, Jackie began her famous

954-591-2653 project of redecorating the White House and historically restoring the public rooms, hunting down furnishings that had been removed from the White House. She was awarded an Emmy for her TV special highlighting the tour of the White House following the restoration. Jackie hosted many fine cultural events at the Executive Mansion – performances of opera, ballet, Shakespeare, and jazz. She had an elegant sense of style, and her fashions set trends around the world. • Jackie was 34 years old in 1963 when her husband was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. She had experienced the death of her three-day-old son just three months before. After spending several months in Washington following his death, she moved to New York City to establish the John F. Kennedy Library. • In 1968, Jackie married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who was 23 years her senior, and the couple split their time among homes in Athens and Skorpios Island, Greece, and Paris. Seven years later, she was a widow once again. • As a widow in her mid-40s, Jackie returned to the literary world, taking a job as an editor with Viking Press, later moving over to Doubleday Books. At age 64, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She gave up her three-pack-a-day smoking habit and cut back on her work schedule at Doubleday, but the cancer continued spread. Just four months after her diagnosis, she passed away. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery next to JFK, their son Patrick and daughter Arabella.

It’s estimated that about 3.2% of the U.S. population are vegetarians. There are many reasons that folks choose to abstain from meat – let’s examine some of the information about those who like to veg out! • While some people opt for vegetarianism out of respect for animals’ rights, others have health-related or religious reasons. Motivation might also be cultural, environmental, or economic. The practice has its roots in ancient India, where they based the tradition on nonviolence toward animals. There are more vegetarians in India than in any other country, claiming 70% of the world’s vegetarians. The ancient Hellenes and Egyptians cited medical purposes and purification rituals for the practice. A Buddhist vegetarian abstains from not only animal products but all vegetables in the Allium family, including onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots. They find the odor of these offensive and believe the “anger up the blood.” • The 6th-century Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras was one of the first famous vegetarians, and those of his era were actually called Pythagoreans. He believed that nonviolence toward animals was the first step toward the same among humans. In his words, “For as

long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.” • The word “vegetarian” was coined in the 19th century, and England was home to the world’s first Vegetarian Society, formed in 1847 to demonstrate that it was possible to live a healthy life without eating meat. • Some cultures are primarily vegetarian due to poverty. A large percentage of those populations are poor farmers who cannot afford meat and subsist on beans, peppers, legumes, and grains. • Founding father Benjamin Franklin followed a vegetarian diet for much of his life. Franklin believed that the diet was not only healthier, the money he saved on expensive meat could be spent on books. He is credited with introducing tofu to America around 1770. • Vegetarians can’t all be lumped together in one group, since their preferences differ so widely. A strict vegan diet is completely plant-based and excludes animal products of any kind, including eggs and dairy, and even beeswax and honey. An ovo-vegetarian eats eggs, but not dairy products. A lacto-vegetarian includes dairy products in their diet, but not eggs. An ovo-lacto vegetarian eats both eggs and dairy. If you’re a pescetarian, you are a vegetarian who eats all plant-based foods, dairy, eggs, and fish. • There seem to be many health benefits associated with vegetarianism. The American Dietetic Association reports that vegetarians have a lower Body Mass Index, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, less Type 2 diabetes, lower rates of hypertension, and less incidences of prostrate and colon cancer. Studies indicate that a lowfat, high-fiber plant-based diet also decreases the risk of developing gallstones. Some research shows that a vegetarian diet increases the body’s metabolism, enabling the body to burn calories at a faster rate than a meat-based diet. • More people can be fed on a vegetarian diet than a meatbased one. One acre of land can yield about 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg) of potatoes whereas only about 165 lbs. (75 kg) of beef can be produced on that same acre. Only 20% of America’s corn is eaten by humans, with the remainder consumed by livestock. Livestock eat 95% of the oats grown in the U.S.

High-Glycemic-Index Foods Turn on Brain Regions Linked to Overeating

High-glycemic-index foods, like white bread and children’s cereals, stimulate brain regions associated with reward and cravings and increase the drive to eat. In a report in the latest American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers at Boston’s Children’s Hospital fed high-GI and low-GI meals to 12 young men and then tracked the activity of various brain regions. The high-GI meal turned on the brain regions involved in reward, craving, and hunger. Cutting Out Meat Boosts Heart Attack Victims’ Chances for Survival People who improved their eating habits the most after a heart attack had a better chance of surviving, according to a study online this week inJAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers assessed the diets of 4,098 women and men from both the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study using the Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010—a tool developed to determine chronic disease risk based on diet—before and after a heart attack. The results showed that after a nine years of followup, a diet lowest in red and processed meat products and sugar and highest in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables lowered the risk of death from heart disease by 40 percent, compared with no dietary changes.

So while Canada asked for (and received) a veggie option, what new product is being launched at McDonald’s restaurants in the United States? Mighty Wings. Sales at American McDonald’s have been slow lately, and the corporation feels that launching chicken wings might be just the ticket to boost their profits. Adding more chicken to the menu will also boost the rates of obesity and heart disease. The Mighty Wings are breaded, which adds an extra layer of fat and sodium to meat that is already high in cholesterol, low in fiber, and loaded with chemicals and hormones. McDonald’s has not made the nutrition information for their Mighty Wings available yet, but it’s not hard to guess that this will be yet another unhealthful item tacked on to an already artery-clogging menu.

Canadians Get Veggie Options, Americans Are Stuck with Greasy Wings

Earlier this year, after McDonald’s nixed salads from their American men, PCRM director of nutrition education Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D, wrote to McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson asking him to add new veggie options to combat the company’s unhealthful image. Maybe she should have specified adding them in all of North America. At this rate, when Chipotle’s vegan Sofrita goes nationwide, it won’t have any competition from the other major fast food chains. Perhaps when the Sofrita’s sales skyrocket, McDonald’s will realize there is a demand for veggie options in America after all.

McDonald’s recently released veggie wraps in Canada, in response to the 71 percent of customers who were requesting meatless options. While not an exactly comparable statistic, a recent study found that 36 percent of American consumers use meat alternatives in their meals. The 36 percent seemed like a promising number, at least until the Canadian statistic was released and McDonald’s sat up and took notice. While one in three Americans is obese, only one in four Canadians struggles with obesity. Both numbers are still much too high, but the difference is significant.

Men who rate themselves as generally angry on questionnaires given early in life are, by the age of 55, three times more likely to have heart disease and six times more likely to have a heart attack (myocardial infarction), compared to other men. The Johns Hopkins University study appears in today’s Archives of Internal Medicine. One common theme between anger and heart disease: Testosterone may lead to aggressiveness, and men with low levels of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which binds testosterone, tend to be rated by their wives as more domineering and difficult to get along with, compared to men with higher SHBG levels. Low-fat, vegan diets lower cholesterol levels, but also raise SHBG, helping to mute testosterone effects.

The laws of supply and demand are simple, if there is demand for something corporations will attempt to supply it to increase profits.

Toenail Fungus Resists Treatment DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Third letter, same request. Please tell me how to get rid of fungus under a toenail. -- B.K. ANSWER: Toenail fungus is prevalent among older people, and often, the infected person has no idea where he or she picked it up. The big toe’s nail is the one the fungus seems to like the best. The nail turns yellow, becomes thick and brittle, and has crumbly material extending from its edge under the nail to its base. The nail doesn’t usually hurt or itch. It just looks awful. Treatment for nail fungus is less than a huge success. Penlac (ciclopirox) Nail Lacquer is applied directly to the nail. The cure rate isn’t impressive. Oral medicines have the best results, but the results aren’t something to write home about. Further, they’re expensive, and often are not covered by insurance. One such medicine is Sporanox (itraconazole). It’s taken twice a day for one week of each month, for three or four months. Liver enzymes should be monitored while using it, because it can, but rarely does, damage liver cells. Some people opt for nail removal. A new treatment employs a laser. As with oral medicines, it’s expensive and most insurers don’t cover the cost. Results are promising but not guaranteed.

If the nail isn’t bothersome, if it’s not leading to infections of the toe or foot and if a person isn’t a diabetic, many decide to live at peace with the infected nail. It isn’t likely to shorten life. Home remedies abound. They include Vick’s VapoRub, bleach and vinegar. I don’t have a lot of faith in them, and I would not use bleach. Studies on Vick’s, applied daily for 48 weeks, show a success rate of 22 percent. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My father and two uncles died from heart attacks when they were in their 50s. I’m 45. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is swallowing gum harmful? I have done it for many, many years. Now I wonder if I am hurting myself or my stomach by doing this. Am I? -- D.J. ANSWER: You’re not hurting yourself or your stomach. Gum isn’t digested. It passes through the small and large intestines without causing any trouble. Gum wasn’t meant to be swallowed. Most people prefer to take it out of their mouth and dispose of it. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Oscar winner Emma Thompson worked on the screenplay for three years, based on the 1982 John Huston film. Now, “Star Trek’s” J.J. Abrahms is making a pilot for HBO to see if he can revive the franchise. Only the future will tell. And finally, what could be more desperate than turning a video game into a movie? “Super Mario Bros.”(1993) cost $48 million to make and grossed only $21 million. “Doom” (2005) cost $60 million to make and took in only $28 million, and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (2010) cost $200 million and grossed $91 million. Guinea Pigs Hide Signs of Illness DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My male guinea pig, “Dale,” was always healthy. He was fat and not losing weight. One day, we cleaned his cage and noticed that he was sticking his head out repeatedly and opening his mouth -- like yawning. The vet said to come in right away, and within five minutes of hanging up, Dale was dead. The vet looked at him and said he looked healthy and that maybe he had a heart attack or stroke, but I didn’t see any symptoms. Any help would be great because we have two others. -- Julie G., via e-mail DEAR JULIE: Sadly, it often can be difficult to tell when a guinea pig is getting ill. They’re very good at hiding signs of illness, and often they are acutely ill before their owners can tell what’s wrong. It’s clear that you pay close attention to your guinea pigs, as you were aware of Dale’s weight and normal behavior.

Certified by The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians However, guinea pigs can become ill very quickly. You were right to contact the veterinarian immediately after noticing Dale’s strange behavior, which I agree, could have been a sign of a stroke or heart attack. I’ll refer again to the late Peter Gurney’s brilliant Guinea Pig Health Guide. One suggestion, which you may be able to apply to your surviving guinea pigs, is to have the vet listen to their heartbeat. A heart murmur can indicate valve problems. Another possibility is an undetected fungal or bacterial infection that got into Dale’s system, eventually causing a heart attack. But as you pointed out, he showed no external signs of illness. For this mystery, I’ll turn to my readers. Any suggestions for Julie on monitoring her two surviving cavies?

Here’s how a spot delivery scam works: When you’re shopping for another vehicle, the deal is put together on the “spot” with a car already on a dealer’s lot. If you have less than excellent credit or a low income, the auto dealer will suggest you finance the vehicle through the dealership. You sign the papers, thinking all is well, accept the keys and drive off in your new wheels. At some point thereafter (days, weeks, months) you’ll be called back to the dealership after being told that the deal isn’t finalized. The “deal” in question is the purchase of your contract from the dealership by a third party. This third party buyer might insist on more money down, or maybe having a cosigner. If no one purchases your contract to the dealer’s satisfaction, the dealer will cancel the contract with you. You must support the pipe in place as you do any loosening or replacing of the hangers. It should not move more than a few centimeters in any direction, and it shouldn’t hang unsupported even during a quick rehanging job. Doing so could cause it to work loose at a pipe joint, and you’ll have a much bigger problem than a squeaky floor.

Pipes and Joists and Squeaks. Oh My!

To avoid this you can either rig up a substitute -- a sturdy rope or cloth tacked to the joist and wrapped underneath the pipe, for example -- or keep the old pipe hanger in place as you attach a new pipe hanger just a little lower. Once you’ve hammered the ends of the new hanger into the side of the joist, carefully work the old hanger loose as a helper holds the pipe in place. Gently lower the pipe into the new hanger. Repeat at other hanger locations along the run where the pipe contacts the joist.

Q: I’ve got a squeaky-floor problem, but it’s a little bit weird. When people walk along the ground floor I can hear wood squeaking against the pipes that are down in the crawlspace. Is this a risk to the pipes? How can I fix the squeaking noise? -- Jim in Buford, Ga.

If, on inspection, you see that the joist is not in good condition -- it’s sagging, or you detect wood rot or water damage -- contact a flooring or foundation specialist. Damaged joists can cause problems throughout the house, so you’ll want that problem addressed immediately.

A: You won’t know for sure without getting into the crawlspace and visually inspecting the pipes and the underside of the floor, including the joists. The pipes running along the crawlspace are likely suspended from the floor joists. If they’re in contact with the joists, then you might hear the faint screech of wood across metal as the joists rub against the pipes.

HOME TIP: Talcum powder can serve as a quick, if temporary, way to stop squeaks between floorboards.

How serious is the problem? It depends. If the floor and joists are in good condition, then you can reposition the pipe very slightly so it doesn’t contact the wood. Do this by lowering or loosening the existing pipe hanger slightly, or replacing it with another pipe hanger or a plastic pipe strap.

You’re allowed to drive the car away but, like a yo-yo and the string, you’ll be pulled back in and will be told you have to sign a new financing agreement -- one with higher interest. You might be threatened with fees for use of the car, or even police intervention for auto theft.

new Year’s eve

A low-tech family vacation was the goal for the Guy family this summer when they packed up their car in San Diego and headed up the coastal highway to the redwood forest in Northern California. “We left behind TV, video games and the kids’ favorite toys to open up opportunities for outdoor adventures,” said 40-year-old Kristen Guy, mom of 6-1/2-year-old Kate and 8-year-old Henry. All it took was a near misstep on a big banana slug when they arrived in the woods, and the kids were hooked on nature. “Without the distractions of city and hometown routines, we struck out daily on trails and around our rented cabin with a single focus: to keep our eyes and ears open,” she said. From wild turkeys and their babies crossing their paths, to discovering constellations in the night sky, being kids, they took it all in and were focused and happy. If you are looking to unplug from modern life now and

then this fall, expand your experiences with old-fashioned outdoor fun. Here are some ideas for your youngest naturalists. Whether you take a nature walk in a city park or in the woods, turn the simplest encounter into a learning experience and a memory. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

• “If you have a fish tank, you can use the fish-tank water to fertilize your rose bushes. I do this, and it’s rich in minerals that the bushes love!” -- A.U. in Alabama • Make your own bed-buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that’s knee high, and fill it about two-thirds full with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it’s nice and loose. Once it’s secure, stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The rice heats up, and the heat is stored in the rice. It’s wonderful for aches and pains -- or just for keeping toes toasty! • Shower caps can be placed over a planter and used to make a kind of greenhouse for planting cuttings. Just water and place it in a sun-filled window. Be sure to check it often, because even though it might be cool out, your little greenhouse can get pretty hot with only a few

hours of sun. • “Loosen tight jeans with a cutting board! First, wash in cold water, then button them around something that’s about an inch wider than the waist ... say, a cookie sheet, chair top, cutting board, etc. Air dry. It’s magical.” -- V.L. in New York “When I was a kid, the side of my yard was soft sand, but it’s where my brother and I kept our bikes. I liked my bike to stand up, because it kept the sand out of my gears. The kickstand would sink in the sand, so my dad gave me an old tennis ball that he had poked a hole into. I put it on the kickstand, and from then on, it stayed standing up. Thought I would share.” -- M.N. in Florida Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Q: What’s the latest news on the judge situation on “American Idol”? Have they sorted out who’s new and who’s coming back? -- Tyler W., Fresno, Calif. A: Finally, “American Idol” has a judge lineup that could make me start watching again. Keith Urban will be returning for his second season, Jennifer Lopez has decided to come back after a season away, and newbie Harry Connick Jr. rounds out the group. Randy Jackson will be back, as a mentor, and Ryan Seacrest returns as the singing-competition show’s gregarious host. Here’s hoping that this January’s 13th season of “AI” is its luckiest one yet. Q: I am dying to know what will happen in season two of Syfy’s “Defiance.” It was one of my favorite new shows of the summer, and I love one the stars: Julie Benz. -- Katie H., via e-mail A: I spoke with the lovely and talented actress -- who most recently starred in the Lifetime original movie “Taken: The Search for Sophie Parker” (check local listings for airdates) -- and she gave me a few hints about what next season holds. The science-fiction near-future drama, which is currently filming its second season in Toronto, will take on a darker tone, as will Julie’s character.

Q: I have several pieces of Corning Ware and was surprised to see some for sale at a local antique mall. What’s the deal? -- Susan, Littleton, Colo. A: Corning Ware was introduced in 1958 and was high-fired glassware capable of going from the freezer to the stove without damage. The first pattern was Blue Cornflower, which was followed by several other popular designs such as Spice O’ Life, Renaissance, Peony, Friendship and Indian Summer. More than half a century has passed since Corning Ware found its way into American homes, and it is, perhaps, a combination of its durability and a nostalgia for midcentury America that has drawn increased interest. Although prices are fairly reasonable, I predict the values will steadily climb.

“The world of Defiance has changed,” she told me, “and with that, so does the look of the show. We see a darker Amanda this season. A much darker Amanda -- she’s struggling; she’s having a very hard time. Her ex-husband was killed during season one; she lost her job, which is truly how she defined herself; and her sister has gone missing. She’s really in a bad place when season two opens. “In the season one finale, we basically hit the reset button, so we start season two in a whole different place. Every character is in a different place than they were during season one. Creatively, it is so much fun to play characters who can grow and change exponentially each season. That is what you are going to see in season two. It’s a much darker ‘Defiance’ -- especially my character.” Q: I love PBS’s “Foyle’s War,” but I think I missed some of season seven. How can I catch up? -- Stephanie R., via e-mail Q: My family lived in Manhattan during the 1930s and was one of the first to have a television set. It is a General Electric model HM-185 console and was purchased by my dad in about 1940. I have always been curious about how much it might be worth. -- Carl, Sun City West, Ariz.

A: Your television set was marketed in 1939 and is referenced in the Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide edited by Kyle Husfloen, and valued at $12,000. Q: I purchased a collector plate at a yard sale, “Pieta” by Michelanglo. I was offered $15 for it, but that doesn’t seem like a fair price for it. -- John, Sioux Falls, S.D. A: Walk into almost any antique mall and you’re likely to find stacks of collector plates, most priced in the $5 to $15 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions, but the market for collector plates is stagnant, and many are selling for a fraction of their original cost. I don’t see this trend changing, at least not in the immediate future. Q: I have the first issue of “Mirabella” magazine from June 1989. What do you think it is worth? -- Charlotte, Albuquerque, N.M. A: “Mirabella” magazine was named for Grace Mirabella,

“Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson” by Jeff Guinn (Simon & Schuster, $27.50) Reviewed by Larry Cox

Charles Manson was, according to a person who knew him, just like a hundred other wannabes on the fringe of the L.A. music scene during the 1960s, except for one important fact. He was the trigger to two terrifying nights in August 1969 that led to the gruesome slaughter of seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski. More than 40 years after the killings that shocked and horrified the nation, Manson continues to haunt and fascinate us. Now for the first time, author Jeff Guinn goes beyond the bloody murders to place Manson in context, including his childhood and formative years. Manson was a manipulator even when he was 5 years old. Charlie claimed it was society that gradually turned him into a terrible human being, but in fact, he was the
