TIDBITS LOOKS ®

BEHIND THE MAGIC by Blue Sullivan

Cinema in America has entertained us with over a century of movie magic. Yet, during the making of some movies, equally unbelievable stories unfolded before the films ever hit the big screen. • In Steven Spielberg’s terrifying 1975 classic, “Jaws,” you don’t see much of the actual shark until very late in the film. That wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. It was due to all of the problems Spielberg and the crew had with the mechanical sharks that were used during filming. • Three different mechanical sharks were employed during the filming of “Jaws.” All were nicknamed “Bruce” after Steven Spielberg’s attorney, Bruce Ramer. • All three mechanical versions of “Bruce” proved unreliable from the beginning of the shoot. The animatronics stalled the first time one was put in the water, and the sharks sank to the seafloor several times, leaving divers scrambling to recover them. • After completing the filming of “Jaws,” the studio had so little confidence in the film that the three Bruces were dumped on the Universal back lot. No efforts were made to preserve them, and none of the three original sharks remain. Turn page for more! WANT TO RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Of Linn County

• In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds,” people in a California beach town are suddenly terrorized by swarms of birds. As outlandish as the premise sounds, it was inspired by an incident only two years before where birds in Monterey Bay suddenly began crashing into local houses. • Many years later, the strange real-life occurrence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply. • In the 1976 suspense blockbuster “The Omen,” a couple (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) takes on the care of an orphan who may literally be the devil’s spawn. The filming of this movie was so crazy it inspired the documentary “The Curse of the Omen.” • Not one, not two, but three planes associated with “The Omen” were hit by lightning during the shoot. Among those onboard during these three separate incidents were star Gregory Peck, screenwriter David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld. • Speaking of Mace Neufeld, his hotel during the “The Omen” shoot was the object of an IRA bombing. A restaurant frequented by the cast and crew was also bombed. Luckily, no one was hurt in either incident.

BY DR JIM COYLE Big Ears are better than a Big Mouth Have you ever wondered why we have 2 ears and 1 mouth? We might be born with the ability to hear, but we must learn how to listen. If we increase our intake and decrease our output we can learn when, where, and how to be effective listeners. Effective listening is not easy. It takes concentration and energy. The following are a few hints to help us become active listeners. • • • •

Respect: regard the speaker as worthy of your attention Stay focused on what is being said: it is so easy to mind wander and not be present Ask questions: this allows clarification for both the sender and the receiver Give feedback: paraphrasing in your own words reassures understanding

Ty, I hope they have PBR for you! Tyrone “Ty” L. Bennett 73 Swisher Iowa Born February 17th, 1939 Died May 16th, 2012 Married Jan Cihla Ty enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, boating, anything outdoors. Ty also enjoyed other activities like horseshoe throwing. Ty joined the Navy and was in for four years, 1958-1962 during his time in the Navy, he was in Jacksonville Fl for two years and then stationed out of Norfolk VA for two years. He was commissioned on the USS Randolph. NASA - Mercury Project In July 1961, Randolph sailed for operations in the Caribbean and served as the recovery ship after splashdown for astronaut

• The special effects coordinator of the film had the spookiest scrape. On Friday the 13th, 1976, he crashed his car in Holland. When he got out, he noticed the road sign. It read “Ommen, 66.6 km.” • In terms of sheer danger, the film shoot for the 1925 epic “Ben-Hur” (the second of three cinematic adaptations of the novel of the same name) takes the cake. The chariot race in the film is still renowned for its realism, because the race was completely real. • “Ben-Hur’s” director Fred Niblo wasn’t happy with the initial footage of the race, so he staged it again. The second time, he told the stunt drivers that the winner of the race would be given the equivalent of around $1,000. Drivers took the race so seriously that there was a huge pile-up of men and horses before the finish line. • Another scene in “Ben-Hur,” a huge sea battle between two ships, proved equally dangerous. Italian extras were recruited and separated by political affiliation (proor anti-fascist), then put on the two boats, to give the on-boat clashes more “realism.” • After separating the two sets of extras according to their violently opposed political affiliations, “Ben-Hur’s” director gave all the men prop swords that had actually been sharpened, again for “realism.” • In Howard Hughes’ misbegotten 1956 epic “The Conqueror,” John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Filming was disastrous from the very start, when a flash flood nearly claimed the entire crew of the film.

Virgil Grissom on America’s second manned space flight, a suborbital shot. In February 1962, Randolph was the primary recovery ship for astronaut John Glenn on his flight, the first American orbital voyage in space. After his historic threeorbit flight, he landed safely near Noa from which he was transferred, by helicopter, to Randolph. After his service duty, Ty was a self employed contractor. He also worked in real estate sales. Then Ty applied with General Mills and worked there 24 years until he retired. Ty later decided he wanted to continue to work with people so he began to do some sales with the Tidbits paper.

Ty was a strong patriotic supporter of the American Legion. His wife Jan paid his dues to become a PUFL (paid up for life) member of the Swisher Post. Ty is survived by spouse Jan, son Jerry (Angie), daughter Teri (Jim), son Chris daughter Darla. Six grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and one that is expecting, many nieces and nephews. Ty was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Mabel Bennett, in laws Frank and Clarice Cihla, son Tyrone Jr., infant daughter Wendy and sister Tami. Funeral services were held at Swisher American Legion, May 21st and he is buried at the Anderson Cemetery just east of Swisher.

• Eleven atomic bombs were tested in Yucca Flats during filming of “The Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, filmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt back to Los Angeles for reshoots. • There aren’t many films more beloved than 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland. A little known fact is that she wasn’t the child actor the screenwriters had in mind for the part. Their choice for the part wasn’t a child actor at all: W.C. Fields! • In “The Wizard of Oz,” actress Margaret Hamilton offered one of the best villains in film history — The Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance was so good, in fact, that many of her scenes were trimmed down or even removed because they were too frightening.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who made the following sage observation: “No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens.” ●If you are a stay-at-home mom, you probably won’t be surprised by a recent study that found lower levels of stress in mothers who work outside the home than in those who stay with their kids all day. ● George Reeves is best known for playing the title role in the 1950s TV show “Adventures of Superman.” The role was a risky one, though -- not in front of the camera, but during his numerous public appearances. It seems that fans wanted to test the strength of the Man of Steel, so they often kicked and punched him. At a 1953 appearance in Detroit, one boy pulled out his father’s loaded .45 Army Colt and aimed it at Reeves’ chest. By telling the boy that the bullets would bounce off his own chest and ricochet into the crowd, harming others, Reeves managed to get the boy to put the gun down. ● Though unenforced (and likely unenforceable), there is a law on the books in Tennessee that bars atheists, preachers and duelists from holding elected office. ● Are you lissotrichous? If you don’t have curls in your hair, you are. Of course, you may not be able to tell if you are atrichous (bald), a condition that may be caused by trichotillomania, the compulsion to pull out your own hair. ● If you’ve been married for 40 years or more, you can be pretty confident that the union will last. Only 1 in every 1,000 marriages of such duration end in divorce. *** Thought for the Day: “I have only one superstition. I make sure I touch all the bases when I hit a home run.” -- Babe Ruth (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

A-1 Home Healthcare Proudly Presents

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Home Health Care Choices Made Easier

It’s not easy making medical decisions when we have no previous experience, but Medicare has just made it easier to make decisions about home health care. The “Home Health Care CAHPS Survey” results have been posted online as part of the Quality Care Finder. The QCF already lets us compare hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis facilities, physicians and Medicare plans -- and now we do the same with home health care. For example, hospitals are compared for rates of readmission and deaths, and whether the hospitals use recommended treatments for serious conditions such as pneumonia and heart attack. Nursing homes can get up to a fivestar rating, depending on the quality of the care. The information looks at pain control, whether patients are given flu shots, special services, and health and safety inspections. Dialysis treatment centers are compared in areas such as whether anemia was controlled, whether home dialysis is offered and what services are provided. The physicians portion of the database lets us get to know a doctor before we make an appointment. Does he or she have a medical specialty or clinical training? One benefit is learning whether a doctor accepts Medicare payments as the full amount. The Medicare plan finders allows us to search for the plan that covers the drugs we need, and compares plans based on quality ratings and costs. Home health care, the newest addition to the database, looks at services provided, such as skilled nursing, physical care and speech therapy. The agencies are compared in how they manage pain and treat wounds. Patient experiences are part of the information. To access the Quality Care Finder, go online to www.medicare.gov/qualitycare-finder or contact Medicare at 1-800633-4227. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE MIGHTY VULCAN

The colossal Vulcan statue overlooking the Birmingham, Alabama, skyline has a rich history over a century long. • Vulcan, the ancient Roman god of the forge (a furnace shop that heats and molds metal), was first associated with Birmingham in 1885 when his image was used as advertisement for the hardware and home furnishings store George C. Kelley Company. • He was one of the rare ugly gods of ancient literature, and before the Vulcan statue was erected, Birmingham residents clashed over whether to create a statue of Vulcan or Mercury, the handsome god of commerce and travel, as a symbol for their city. • In the early 1900s, Alabama State Fair Manager James A. MacKnight elected that a statue of Vulcan would best represent the city’s growing industrial capabilities to be presented at the fair. December 22– January 19

June 22– July 22 Abrasiveness does not become you, but this time, you have no choice. You must say what’s on your mind, Cancer, else you won’t be heard.

January 20– February 18 A friend makes a promise they cannot keep. Give them a way out, Aquarius, and they will reciprocate. A breakthrough at work is reason to celebrate.

July 23– August 22

Don’t take yourself too seriously this week, Capricorn. Laugh off your mistakes and aim to do better. A runin with a foe leads to a momentous occasion.

What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive. Keep that adage in mind this week, and be honest, not only with those around you but with yourself, Leo.

August 23– September 22

February 19– March 20 Watch it, Pisces. A financial proposal bears promise, but requires further study. Look before you leap. A young friend pushes the envelope yet again.

The truth comes out, Virgo, and it isn’t pretty. Give yourself some time to adjust before you make any moves. An e-mail answers a question.

March 21– April 19 The time has come for you to call in a favor. Do it with gusto, Aries, and you won’t be turned down. Conflict at home comes to an abrupt end.

September 23– October 22 Brace yourself, Libra. The tide is turning at home, and you must be prepared to weather the storm. A freak incident at work is a good safety reminder.

April 20– May 20 Emotions run high this week, with the conclusion of several important projects. Prepare to be praised and duly rewarded, Taurus. A cherished piece comes back into fashion.

October 23– November 21 A friend is suffering. Do what you can to help them, but don’t take over. They must learn to fend for themselves, Scorpio. You’re up to a challenge.

May 21– June 21 Love burns bright, and magical times abound. A financial mistake is rectified with ease. Make sure you thank the appropriate people, Gemini.

November 22– December 21 Make a break for it, Sagittarius. The time is right. A friend’s success does not come without trial and error. Be there for them to give them the lift they need.

THE PATH OF A STAR

Among the countless actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are an untold number of fascinating stories about how those men and women got there in the first place. Here are a few of the most interesting ones. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an actor (though he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher certainly encouraged acting over his eventual day job. She told him that he had no “aptitude for singing.” Fortunately, he politely disagreed with her appraisal and became the best-selling recording artist of all time. • Emmy-nominated actress Jane Lynch of the hit Fox show “Glee” got her first break from doing commercials for Frosted Flakes. She struck up a friendship with the ●commercials’ director, Christopher Monday $5 burger baskets 11-8 Guest. Travolta • People strongly All Games High TVSin with● his starringInrole asDefinition Danny Zuko the smash movie version of “Grease.” Yet five years earlier another future star played the same role in a theater production of “Grease.” He was a then little-known actor named Richard Gere. • Before he became the blockbuster superstar we know from such movies as “Rain Man” and “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise considered a far different calling: priesthood. In fact, he told Parade magazine: “I looked at the priesthood and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’” Fortunately for Hollywood, he ultimately decided not to become “Father Cruise.” • Before becoming the world-famous director of the two highest-grossing movies of all time, “Titanic” and “Avatar,” James Cameron drove a bus for a living. • Long before winning an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in “Jerry Maguire,” Cuba Gooding worked as a back-up dancer for Lionel Richie. When Richie played the Olympics in 1984, Gooding was with him. • Mick Jagger once considered a more stable calling than “internationally famous rock star.” He originally studied to be an accountant at the London School of Economics. • Legendary actor Christopher Lee — who has appeared in over 275 movies and shows in his long, illustrious career — was once a heroic figure in another life, too. He was a Special Operations Executive during World War II, serving as part of an elite unit commissioned directly by Winston Churchill. • Also serving in the unit with Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Many of Bond’s adventures were actually modeled after Fleming’s own experiences with the elite commando unit. • Kurt Russell has been on our TVs and movie screens since the 1970s, but did you know he was also a champion athlete? Before injury, Russell played minor league baseball. His batting average when he retired was .586! He was a pretty good race car driver also, winning six national championships before he was 21.
