• The name of Rod Laver is not a familiar one unless you are an avid tennis fan. In July of 1969, Laver became the first person to win four Wimbledon titles. • International Lefthanders Day is set aside every August 13 for the estimated 13 percent of the world’s population who is left-handed. Lefthanders International publishes a magazine and offers a catalog packed full of products aimed at “lefties.” • According to legend, St. Lawrence of Rome, a friend to the poor, was roasted to death on an iron grill for distributing church property to the needy. As a result, southern Europeans consider it civilized to eat only cold meat on this martyr’s feast day, August 10. Answers on pg. 16

• According to the ancient Gregorian calendar, July was the fifth month and consequently was called Quintilis, the Roman word for “fifth.” When the Romans later moved the beginning of the year from March 1 to January 1, July became the seventh month. Because Julius Caesar was born during this month, the Roman Senate changed the name to July.

Summer has been a historical time for the English Channel. Frenchman Louis Bleriot accomplished the first flight across the English Channel in July of 1909 in 37 minutes, piloting his 25-hp plane. He received an award of 1,000 English pounds for his efforts but apparently not much fame, since the name of Louis Bleriot is unknown to the average person. The first woman to fly across the Channel is honored on August 2. Harriet Quimby Day is set aside to commemorate this brave woman’s flying feats, including being the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Sad to say, Harriet was killed in an airshow accident just three months after her historic English Channel adventure.

In Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, the word for ruby was Ratnaraj, which translates “king of gems.” According to legend, wearers of rubies will receive wisdom, happiness and health. • Women’s rights took a step forward in July of 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Resolutions presented at the gathering maintained that a man should not withhold a woman’s rights, take her property or refuse to allow her to vote. • The pilot of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in August of 1945, was 30-year-old Paul W. SUMMERTIME (continued): It was during the summer of 1974 that Richard Nixon became the only U.S. President to resign from office. He was avoiding probable impeachment proceedings stemming from his cover-up of the illegal activities of his staff in the Watergate scandal. He was granted a full pardon for all federal crimes one month later by his successor Gerald Ford. The founder of L’Oreal cosmetics, chemist Eugene Schueller, is credited with the invention of sunscreen in 1936. If you’re using sunscreen with an SPF of 15, it is providing protection from 93 percent of the sun’s UV rays, while the SPF30 variety will provide 97 percent protection. Manufacturers advise against using any sunscreen that is more than a year old. Statistics indicate that only about 30 percent of teenage males apply sunscreen on a regular basis, compared to 46 percent of females of the same age. Going fishing on your summer vacation? According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the best times for fishing are when the ocean tides are “restless, one hour before and one hour after high and low tides.” In addition, when the wind is from the west rather than from the north or east, fishing will be better, as well as when the barometer is steady or rising, says the “Almanac.” July 19 is Flitch Day, when according to an old custom, bacon was given to any couple who could prove they had lived in harmony and fidelity for one year. The 40 days from July 3 to August 11 are the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and are known as “Dog Days.” The technical term for this period is “Canicular Days,” deriving its name from the Dog Star, Sirius.

If a plane crashes on the border of the US and Canada, where do they bury the survivors? Nowhere. You don't bury survivors!

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver

• It was Danish author, philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard who made the following sage observation: “People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.” • After the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film “The Birds,” pet stores all over the country saw a sharp decline in the sales of pet birds. • You might be surprised to learn that during the first airing of the original “Star Trek” series, no episode ranked higher than No. 52 in the ratings. • According to the Guinness Book of Records, it was poor Donna Griffiths who suffered the longest sneezing fit ever recorded. On Jan. 13, 1981, the 12-year-old girl started sneezing, and she continued sneezing every day for more than two and a half years. • If you’re like the average American, you eat 20 quarts of ice cream every year.

• I’m sure you’ve heard the term “dimwit” used as an insult, but, as it turns out, the word is more descriptive than derogatory. The human brain actually uses less power than a 100-watt light bulb. • A man named Patrick Hooligan lived in London in the mid-1800s. He was such a notorious troublemaker that his name is still used today to refer to ruffians and hoodlums. • In 1909, in England, one Lord Barbazon took a pig up for a ride in an airplane. Bovines seemingly got short shrift; the first cow didn’t take to the air until 1930. It was in February of that year that a cow was loaded into an airplane in St. Louis. It was milked during the flight, and the milk was parachuted to earth. *** Thought for the Day: “He’s turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.” -- David Frost (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

• On July 26, 1775, the U.S. postal system is established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Until then there were no post offices in the colonies, so mail was typically left at inns and taverns. • On July 25, 1832, the first recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurs when four people are thrown off a vacant car near Quincy, Mass. A cable on a vacant car snapped them off the train and over a 34foot cliff. • On July 31, 1916, future racing legend Louise Smith, who will become the first woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, is born in Barnesville, Ga. In her first race, unaware that a checkered flag meant the finish line, Smith kept going when the race ended until someone threw out a red flag.

MacArthur’s men set their camps on fire, and the veterans were driven from the city. • On July 29, 1958, the U.S. Congress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a civilian agency responsible for coordinating America’s activities in space. At 28,000 feet the Boeing suddenly encountered two military jets. One was flown by a student who had only a few hours of flying experience. Neither jet was equipped with radar.

• Divorce rates are rising again. Think about it: It takes some confidence in the financial aspect of one’s life to file for divorce. There’s the house (Will it sell? Is there any money to divide up?), the prospect of paying alimony (Is there enough job security to make alimony possible?) and the division of assets. The emotional aspect should be included here: If it’s perceived that the bad financial times are over, maybe having a partner isn’t as important now.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Going Online -- Or Not The conversation started easily enough: A local group of seniors were enjoying a monthly lunch when one said: “My son wants to buy me a computer.” The responses ranged from “Oh, lucky you!” to “You poor thing.” We quickly got on to the topic of whether to join the “technology revolution” -- or not. Back in 2004, a Pew research report revealed that a full 80 percent of seniors didn’t have any intention of going online. A 2009 study revealed that 42 percent of seniors use a computer. How far we’ve come in a few years. We took a vote, and our statistics were higher: Seventy percent of us already had a computer, and of that number, about 50 percent felt competent to do all they wanted. Email was a given. When it came to downloading and printing or filing photos, the percentage fell. The success rate was related to having taken a class or having a nearby grandchild to give instruction. As for social media -- engaging with others via the Internet -- only one of us confessed to that, saying he had Twitter and Facebook accounts and used them to keep up with his children. But successfully searching on the Internet, that was more difficult. Still, with some effort, it’s possible to find all sorts of helpful information online: worldwide news, vacation research, the latest health data. Our group’s apparent guru, the one with the Facebook account, cited another reason for being on the Internet: One of his old school chums was able to look him up, and they’ve been able to share memories, stories and photos. In case you’re on the fence: If nothing else, finding old friends would make having computer access worthwhile. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

There once was a duck that went to the store to by some lipstick, so the cashier asked, 'cash or credit?' The duck said, just put it on my bill. What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, and has a bed but never sleeps? A river....

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

BETHANY HAMILTON If you’ve seen the 2011 film “Soul Surfer,” the name of Bethany Hamilton is a familiar one. This week, Tidbits spotlights the life of this courageous young lady who has triumphed over a devastating shark attack. • By the age of eight, Bethany Hamilton already knew she wanted to be a professional surfer. The young Hawaii resident entered her first competition, Oahu’s Rell Sun Menehune event, and came out the victor in her age bracket. It wasn’t long before she picked up a sponsor, and she was on her way! • On Halloween morning in 2003, when Hamilton was 13, she was out with friends for an early surf along the Kauai north shore beach. The water was clear and calm as she lay on her surfboard and dangled her left arm in the water, watching the many turtles in the area. With no warning, her life was forever changed. A 14-foot (4.3-meter) tiger shark attacked, severing her arm just below the shoulder. It was later determined that a bite just two inches farther in would have claimed her life. As it was, she lost over 60 percent of her blood.

• Hamilton watched the water around her change to a bright red, but somehow this young teen managed to stay calm enough to paddle toward the beach assisted by her friend, who, upon reaching shore, created a tourniquet from a surfboard leash. Ironically, when they reached the hospital, Hamilton was wheeled into an operating room where her father had been scheduled to have knee surgery that morning.

• Three short months after the attack, Hamilton returned to competition, taking fifth place in her first time out. A year after, just shy of her 15th birthday, she nabbed first place in the NSSA national championships, her first national title. She was the recipient of 2004’s Best Comeback Athlete ESPY Award and a special courage award that was presented at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards. • In 2004, Hamilton recorded her experiences in a biography entitled “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board.” It is the story of how a positive attitude, perseverance and a strong faith in God accounted for her recovery. She has published five non-fiction books since the attack, with the goal of explaining how adversity can change a person’s life perspective. • In 2007, at age 17, Hamilton achieved the dream of turning professional and continues full time on the pro surfing circuit. In 2009, she appeared on the game show “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” and in 2010 was featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.” She also participates in humanitarian projects, including having helped children orphaned by a tsunami to overcome their fear of water. “Friends of Bethany” is a new effort of hers, a foundation that supports shark attack survivors and other amputees. The film version of her biography, “Soul Surfer,” was released in April of 2011, starring Anna Sophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood. Q. What can you open but can never close? A. As you move from room to room, you should open every drawer and cabinet and examine their contents. Throw out old pens, broken crayons and markers that no longer write. Don’t hoard things. We often hang on to things because we think we will need them some day. All too often that day never comes. And when it does and we don’t have the items needed, a solution generally surfaces. Each of us can be very resourceful when we have to be, so don’t hang on to excessive amounts of anything. It takes up space that could be used in better ways. If you have children, help them get their rooms organized. Provide them with lots of seethrough containers to organize toys. Stackable ones take up less space. Help them put their toys away in the correct places when they are finished with them. They will enjoy spending time in their own space if it is comfortable and they can find their favorite toys easily. You might consider shelving for the walls or even over the doorways or windows if space is at a premium.

One of the best ways to control stress in your life is to control your environment. Look around your home. Do the rooms appear overly busy? Is every flat surface covered? Can you see the floor in your closet? If you get tense just walking through your house, then you are probably bothered by clutter. Not everyone is bothered by clutter. I am. I can live with it for only so long. Then I have to do something about it. It seems to go in cycles. Clutter—no clutter—clutter. I just can’t seem to get into the routine of living a clutter-free existence for any length of time. If you have the same problem, here are some suggestions for getting on track and staying clutter-free.

If your children are of school age, provide a place of study that is free of clutter and distractions. A desk is ideal, but the dining room table works just as well. It is important that they study in the same place and at the same time every day. Create an accessible craft center, a bookcase or cabinet that holds coloring books, markers, craft paper, glue and scissors for those special school projects. The kids will know exactly where to look for the items they need, and more importantly, they will know where to put them when they are finished. For young children, the dining room serves as a great location for both study and the craft center. That way, Mom can keep an eye on things.

TOM’S HOME REPAIR

Bedroom closets are notorious for getting out of control. Do you have too many pairs of shoes? Try them all on and discard any that no longer fit. Our feet continue to grow as we get older and you’d be surprised how many shoes don’t fit from one year to the next. So get rid of the old and make room for the new.

Carpentry • Drywall Contractor Registered Painting • Roof Repair 35 Years Experience

In the bathroom, empty the medicine cabinet and throw away old makeup and prescriptions. Keep a moderate supply of towels, soaps and cleaning supplies on hand; anything else that isn’t absolutely necessary should be kept elsewhere.

“When we need repairs done on short notice, Tom has always responded in a timely manner. He is trustworthy, mindful of costs, and talented. We haven’t found anything he couldn’t fix. It has been a pleasure to call on him for all of our repair needs”. Barb Colehour Secretary / Treasurer Executive Estates 5

Once you have made the decision to live clutter-free, your life will be less stressful. But you must be persistent and unfailing in your attempts. It’s not easy. As a matter of fact, it’s downright hard in the beginning. But if you stay with it, you’ll be into a routine before you know it and won’t think twice about putting something away as soon as you are finished with it. You will come to love those empty, flat surfaces and the way they make your rooms look larger.

• Even a genius can marry his cousin! Take, for example, Albert Einstein, who married his second cousin Elsa in 1919, remaining married to her until her death in 1936. Evolution theorist Charles Darwin married his first cousin Emma Wedgwood and had 10 children with her. “The Time Machine” author H.G. Wells married his first cousin in 1891. A teacher at the time, Wells left her three years later for one of his students. • Two well-known female singers share common ancestry, Celine Dion and Madonna. Genealogy records reveal that these ladies have 146 ancestors in common. In addition, both Celine and Madonna are distant cousins of England’s Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles. • Two other female celebrities have the same ancestors quite a distance up the family tree. Actress Angelina Jolie and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are ninth cousins, twice removed. This means that they share a grandparent eight generations back. The word “removed” indicates the number of generations separating the cousins from each other. • Speaking of the Clintons, former President Bill Clinton is a distant cousin of the best-selling author of legal thrillers, John Grisham. Both are native Arkansans. • Talk about robbing the cradle! At age 20, 19thcentury mystery writer Edgar Allen Poe married his 13-year-old cousin. That’s the same age famous rock and roll musician Jerry Lee Lewis’ cousin Myra was when the singer married her in 1957. At age 22, it was the third of his six marriages. •

“Fatal Attraction” actress Glenn Close and actress Brooke Shields are second cousins. Shields’ great grandmother was Close’s great aunt.

• Oscar winner Meryl Streep and “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria were in for a surprise during the making of the 2010 PBS documentary on genealogy called “Faces of America.” It was discovered that the two women are distant cousins, and both share ancestry with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

“NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): • French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner. • Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Dogs” like Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat. • Colombian: This term means different things SEND BOUQUETS to different people, on how you FOR ANYdepending OCCASION get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer GUA RAthe to their products as Colombian, although NTEE D actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South $ 99 FLOWERSThe FROM +s/h American nation. prevalence of coffee shops throughoutanAmerica is proof enough that many of usextra just can’t get along in the alreadywithout reduced aprices on other bouquets.* morning hot cup of Colombian.

• Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Victoria, married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg when they were both 20 years old. His father and her mother were siblings who collaborated for years to unite the two. Victoria and Albert were married for 21 years, a union that produced nine children and 42 grandchildren. Albert died at age 42, and in her grief, Victoria wore black the remainder of her life, another 40 years.
