ROLE SPECIFICATION Temporary teacher of Modern Foreign Languages Morrison’s Academy is a co-educational independent school for children from the age of 3 to 18 years. A Nursery, large hall and the 45 acres of school playing fields are located on separate campuses a short distance from the main school. Set within the attractive market town of Crieff, Morrison’s looks out on stunning countryside and yet is only an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The ethos of the school is shaped by high expectations, toleration, courtesy, respect for others and regard for ethical and moral values. A combination of modern and traditional teaching and learning opportunities provide young people with the knowledge and skills to lead successful and well-balanced lives. In partnership with parents we encourage our young people to develop their full potential, academically and personally. Excellent pastoral care, concern for the individual pupil and a wide range of co-curricular activities also contribute much to our friendly, purposeful atmosphere and sense of community. In our March 2009 inspection, HMIE identified the following aspects as particular strengths of the school.      

The continuity of co-educational, all-through provision, from Nursery to Primary and Transition to Secondary, offering a broad-based Scottish education experience. A flexible curriculum designed to meet pupils’ needs including the Civics programme unique to Morrison’s Academy. Small teaching groups throughout the school maximising opportunities for quality learning and teaching, and effective pupil-teacher relationships. An aesthetically pleasing and inspiring campus in a safe and quiet location with the advantage of being in close proximity to the centre of a traditional Scottish country town. The postholder will be able to teach French and German, with one of the languages up to at least Higher level, in a manner designed to engage and enthuse all the pupils, and to contribute to the development and improvement of the department. It is a requirement that they will also make a contribution to the programme of co-curricular activities.


Essential     

A degree-level qualification relevant to the teaching of modern foreign languages A PGCE / PGDE qualified teacher with good experience in a teaching role Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team GTCS registration or eligibility for membership thereof Skilled in the use of ICT

Desirable   

The ability to teach both languages to Higher level Experience of developing teaching and learning, attainment and assessment Experience of working within a school committed to developing the pupils and staff as a whole.

Hours of work:

The normal school day commences at 08.30 and ends at 16.15. teachers are required to attend scheduled Parents’ meetings Mornings and to participate in the co-curricular life of the school normal school day. 35 hours of contractual CPD per annum established as a requirement for all teachers.

Leave entitlement:

Temporary teachers are paid a daily rate, in line with The Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT) and included in this is a payment for accrued holidays.

Salary Scale:

Salary will be calculated in accordance with the provisions on salaries contained in the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education as made by the SNCT.

As a teacher of modern foreign languages the principal tasks shall be: 1.

To work to achieve the aims of the school and support its ethos.


To teach languages at all levels in the Senior School up to at least Higher level.


To create an effective working environment that offers support and encouragement to all pupils.


To work co-operatively with colleagues and offer commitment and enthusiasm as part of a team where the sharing of ideas is important.


To employ a range of teaching styles and strategies suitable for pupils from S1 to S6.


To be conversant with current curricular developments.


To provide expertise, enthusiasm, creativity and control in all learning situations so that school education will have meaning and value for all children.


To teach and develop the subject within the accepted policy of the school and as agreed at departmental meetings.


To co-operate with colleagues and senior promoted staff in the provision of essential information for pupil development and efficient administration, including registration.

10. To be actively involved in the programme of co-curricular activities. 11. To attend formal Parents’ evenings and be available for discussion and consultation with individual parents as required and inform the Head of Department and subject coordinator of any such contact. 12. To attend whole-school assembly and other assemblies whenever possible. 13. To ensure that individual talents of pupils are encouraged and built upon. 14. To contribute to school improvement. 15. To co-operate fully with Heads of Year who have responsibility for the total programme of work undertaken by pupils. 16. To share in the disciplinary role required of all teachers and to enforce the School’s policy on Positive Behaviour, ensuring good order and discipline at all times when pupils are present on the School premises and whenever pupils are engaged in authorised school activities, whether on School premises or elsewhere. Self-discipline and proper regard for authority are expected of all pupils. 17. To maintain the highest standards of professional conduct at all times. 18. To have high expectations of the pupils both in terms of their academic development and standards of behaviour. 19. To carry out other duties as might reasonably be required by the Rector. 20. To comply with the individual responsibilities imposed by the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999) and to co-operate with the school’s management to promote a positive attitude towards health and safety at work taking all reasonably practicable steps to prevent personal injury or injury to others. This role specification is intended to convey a broad outline of the position and responsibilities. It is not definitive and will be mutually reviewed on a biennial basis as a normal part of the quality assurance process.
