Welcome to Ljubno! The signs of the first people living in the Upper Savinja Valley are from the Roman period. However, people did not systematically advance up the Savinja River until the arrival of our Slovenian ancestors. They came here from the heavily populated Lower Savinja Valley. The people settled next to the Savinja River, close to the area of the present day Ljubno, the slopes higher upriver were populated later. Ljubno was first mentioned in historical documents in 1247 in relation to the ministerialis of the Gornji Grad Benedictine monastery that among others also had authority over Ljubno. Throughout history, the people from Ljubno made a living primarily with

agriculture and timber rafting, since the crafts industry was relatively undeveloped. Timber rafting, one of the main recognizable characteristics of the Municipality of Ljubno, was once the most profitable economic industry in the upper region of the Savinja Valley. Today, it survives only as an ethnographic attraction of the Ljubno Flosarski bal timber rafting festival.

The Smrekovec– Komen Ridge The Smrekovec mountain range is classified in Natura 2000 and is the only volcanic range in Slovenia. The volcanism took place in a marine environment. www.smrekovec.net

30 million years ago, during the tertiary geological periods of Oligocene and Miocene, Smrekovec was an active volcano, therefore rock that is a product of lava and ash can be found in the earth in a wide area around it. A ridge structure and plain rounded and mostly overgrown peaks it is distinct from its neighbouring Raduha Mountain and other surrounding peaks. Due to the non-limestone, acidic rock plants grow here that cannot be found elsewhere in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and due to a poorly permeable subsoil there are plenty of surface waters. Below the Smrekovec’s northern slopes runs the Periadriatic Seam - a tectonic fault zone that separates the Adriatic and European tectonic plates. The rock foundation gave the range its external form. The range is one of rare areas that with is non-carbonate base reaches above the treeline and because of this plants grow here that are extremely rare for Slovenian conditions.

partisan hospital In the eastern part of Travnik (1200 m), there is a partisan hospital (SVPB), also named "Tračka bolnica." The group that started building the hospital came from Dolenjska 6 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

region at the end of March 1944. Today's remains of the hospital are carved into a hill, measuring 60 m x 40 m. At a full capacity, the hospital staff numbered 17 people. There are

information boards with interesting stories from the past at the site today.

hint While exploring the Smrekovec Mountain Range, in direct vicitnity of the Smrekovec Lodge (managed by the Črna na Koroškem Mountaneering Society), you can visit the interpretation point “Smrekovec - The Dormant Giant” which acts as an outdoor classroom where you can play, experiment and learn something new. While exploring the Smrekovec Mountain Range you can enjoy many delicious blueberries that can be found all along the trail from the Travnik Lodge via Hlipovec to Smrekovec. Blueberries are food for the animals in that area, so accept the gifts offered by nature, but do not pick too many!

Tetrao tetrix

For all enthusiasts, we recommend photo hunting, because in this area you can find the wood grouse (Tetrao urogallus), the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and numerous other endangered species of birds and butterflies. Respect the living environment of animals and keep a safe distance!

did you know? On the Komen Peak (1695 m), which from the centre of Ljubno looks like a mighty extinct volcano, a wooden chapel was built in 1987 in the honour of St. Cyril and Methodius.

Forests are an important habitat and shelter for a large number of endangered and rare species. As many as 358 plant species have been identified on the Smrekovec Mountain

Range which attests to its great biodiversity, since it presents approximately 10% of all plant species in Slovenia. Among those, 26 are endangered. tourist guide municipality of ljubno 7

»Tirske peči« Natural Monument The vertical, limestone cliffs of Tirske peči fall off into the valley on the SW edge of the Golte Landscape Park. They are named after the Tiršek farm located in the immediate vicinity of the park. Besides the aesthetic characteristics, the cliffs also serve as an area for thermophilic floral stands and a nesting area for birds of prey. In 1997, Tirske peči were designated as a protected area with purpose of preserving the nesting area of the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

The Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus) and the tawny owl (Strix aluco) are permanent brooders here and some time ago the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) also nested here, but have lately only been observed on rare occasions.

Did you know that during the second World War there were wheat fields below the Tirske peči at 930 m above sea level?

Golte Landscape Park The Golte Landscape Park is a karst plateau south-east of the Smrekovec Mountain Range and the majority of it belongs to the Municipality of Mozirje, except for the pasture mountain of Stari Stani. The majority of it is overgrown by coniferous forest and, due to the presence of rare species of birds and habitats, its peak is part of Natura 2000. Golte is known as a winter-summer high-mountain recreational central point where at 1200 to 1600 meters

above sea level, on 50 hectares of surface area there are ski slopes and a children's ski course. Golte has an Alpine Garden that is a unique example of alpine flora in an indigenous environment. Besides the connection via road from Ljubno to the Stari Stani pasture and from Mozirje to the parking lot at the Golte Hotel, the visitors can also easily access the Golte Hotel with a cable car from Žekovec near Mozirje.

hint From the parking lot at the Stari Stani mountain you can embark on various themed trails of Golte. You can refresh in one of two lodges near the artificial lake, in the hotel or at the Mozirje Lodge.

The River Savinja The spring of the Savinja River is situated under the Okrešelj Cirque and falls into the Logarska Valley in a wonderful waterfall. Due to the slopes of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps overgrown with forest, upstream the river can barely pass between the rocky barriers in some places and in others it flows carelessly under beautiful small wooden bridges. Between the Logarska Valley and Ljubno ob Savinji, Savinja is a typical alpine river with a high stream gradient, numerous rapids, beautiful stream pools and clean and fauna-rich water. In these parts, the river is the characteristic feature of the Upper Savinja Valley as it gives the valley its picturesque character that is further reinforced by the mountains made of limestone and volcanic tuffs. Savinja, one of the most beautiful rivers, is friendly to fishermen, bathers who use it too cool off during the summer and to the romantics and poets who sing praises to its striking beauty. In places its waters are still making them ideal for beginners, in other places the waters are more demanding thus suitable for those proficient in water sports. The Savinja River, a protected natural monument, is the symbol of man’s dependence on water and nature throughout the centuries as expressed through the tradition of logging or timber rafting, fishing, boating and other recreational activities. Besides walkers, fishermen and kayakers, the Savinja River and its riparian zone is also the living environment of numerous water and waterside animals and plants among which many are on the red list of endangered species.

did you know? Savinja is the longest Slovenian river that flows entirely hroughout Slovenian territory. The most appropriate time for kayaking and rafting is in the spring, when the snow melts, and in the rainy autumn, since the water level is high enough. The ideal time for paddling is several days after heavy summer rains; however for those less demanding it is still possible to enjoy it during drier summer days. 10 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

The Sušnik Maple Tree Ter 55, 3333 Ljubno ob Savinji

High on the right bank of the Krumpah brook ravine stands a picturesque Sušnik homestead under which grows a beautiful sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) of exceptional size. It has a circumference of 600 cm.

The Visočnik Maple Tree Ter 54, 3333 Ljubno ob Savinji

Next to the Visočnik homestead and tourist farm grows a beautiful and mighty sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) with a circumference of 600 cm. In proximity to the house there are also several smaller maple trees growing that were planted there to provide protection against the wind.

The Kolenc Linden Tree Na pečeh 8, 3333 Ljubno ob Savinji

In the courtyard of the Kolenc farm grows a large-leaved linden tree that is approximately 150 years old and has a circumference of more than 400 cm. The tree is hollow, because it was damaged by a lightning in 1979. Despite this, it is well-grown and beautifully complements the interesting architecture of the nearby building. In antiquity, the people of Central Europe believed it represents friendship and saw it as the tree of life, health, wisdom and justice.

There are many other extremely interesting natural sites in Ljubno such as caves and abysses, the sulfur spring "Rajserjev graben", the fossil site "Slatina" and other trees of respectable age and size: The Atelšek Ilex Tree, The Atelšek Yew Tree, The Detmar Linden and Oak Trees, The Ermenc Yew Tree, The Kladje Linden Tree, The Kosmač Yew Tree, The Lipovt Yew and Beech Trees, The Mlakar Sorb Tree, The Tašk Pine Tree, The Tiršek Yew Tree… tourist guide municipality of ljubno 11

Cultural Sites The Municipality of Ljubno is very rich and diverse in terms of cultural heritage. Besides two historically formed town centres, Ljubno also has numerous examples of fixed physical heritage of local importance: wooden granaries, “kozolci” that are characteristic of Slovenian rural areas – “toplars”, Venetian saw, a typical farmhouse (Fašunova), a town house (Petkova) and village house (Šteknerjeva), an early lime kiln and many other commercial and residential buildings that have been entered in the Register of Slovene Cultural Heritage.

Interesting fact The majority of “kozolci” (“toplars”) in the Upper Savinja Valley is made from four wooden beams or “štants” where hay used to be hung. Under the roof of a “kozolec” is a special place called “peter” used for storing clover and aftermath and for sleeping by the hired hands working on farms.

Timber Rafting Exhibition The exhibition presents the life of raftsmen or “flosarji” throughout its 500 years of history. With interactive animated stories it takes the visitor into the past and helps preserve the memory of timber rafting. Transporting timber into the valley from forests high in the hills, working in sawmills, making timber rafts and travelling to distant places with a raft is hard work. Only strong hands of our ancestors woodcutters, sawyers and timber raftsmen were a match for such work. The exhibition tells the story of how these brave men lived, gives account of what the trips down the Savinja, Sava and Danube

Farmer’s Retirement House The Farmer’s retirement house can be found in the Vrbje venue. These types of houses were often found on farms. When the head of the estate handed over the farm estate to the younger generation, the younger farmer became the new head of the farm and the senior head of the household retired into a smaller, more modest but still comfortable home. Besides accommodation, the elder was also assured food and care until their death. The farmer’s retirement house also served for uncles and aunts who never married and thus stayed on their birth farm until the end of their life. These houses were mostly wooden buildings with a characteristic balcony (gnk) and small windows. The central room was called hiša and had a large table and a domestic shrine (bogkov kot). 14 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

The Fašun Homestead Foršt 51, 3333 Ljubno ob Savinji E info@zavod-savinja.si / savinja.ivica@siol.com www.savinja.si

Together with its farmhouse it represents a uniform type of a stretched home which is characteristic for the first half of the 19th century. With its modest design and a courtyard, the homestead represents a home typically used by small farmers, forest workers and presumably also timber raftsmen. It is a ground-level house built of stone. It represents a type of houses with classic – Central Slovenian – ground plan where rooms are arranged around the vestibule with an original black kitchen (a kitchen with an open fireplace and no chimney). One of its specific features that is rarely seen in such houses is the stone flooring in the vestibule that was brought from the Church of St. Nicolas from Rastke hamlet in 1970. It was used to replace the previous

flooring made of river stones, the so called “kuglflašter”. The homestead houses a kitchen used for the purposes of various thematic workshops and culinary events and the second floor contains a multi-purpose room that serves as a venue for various activities, the so called Centre for Rural Development. Since 2006, the commercial premises of the homestead accommodate the Savinja Institute for the Development of the Countryside and Tourism the main activity of which is managing the Local Action Group LAS of the Upper Savinja and Šaleška Valleys.

did you know? The Cultural Heritage of Slovenia has 101 units entered in the Municipality of Ljubno and 1 unit of intangible cultural heritage: making the Ljubno Palm Sunday crafts or »potice« which have been declared an intangible heritage of national importance. tourist guide municipality of ljubno 15

Palm Sunday »Potice« A great speciality of Ljubno are the traditional Palm Sunday crafted bundles of wood that are called »potice«. In Ljubno, the tradition of making »potice« is closely related to the local way of life. They are proof of folk art that interweaves aesthetics and functionality and results in a characteristic motif of »potice«. The motives for »potice« change with time together with tools to make them. Typical likenesses of the Ljubno »potice« are tools, objects or stage sceneries from the everyday life on the farm and sacral buildings and religious symbols. Today, »potice« have modern motives such as: electronic devices, motives of animals and other objects (skis, fishing rods, binoculars, tennis rackets

etc.). »Potice« should be handmade from natural and seasonal materials found in the vicinity of the maker’s home: fresh greenery, rods, tree bark, fruits etc. They must contain seven types of wood: holly, willow, yew, ivy, basket willow, box and dogwood. Despite the rule that »potice« should be made by hand, today the modern technology is nonetheless indispensable due to the complex and exact creation of »potice«. The term probably comes from the former combination of bread or cake and the young spring greenery that make up the Palm Sunday bundles of wood.

did you know? At the end of the 19th century, the tradition was for the young men to compete in who will bring the largest bundle of wood for blessing. The first figural “potica” is said to be made by Jože Poličnik, a weak and poorly boy who could not compete with stronger peers in terms of strength, therefore he decided to make the most beautiful »potica« in the form of a carpenter’s tool. The locals found the idea interesting and the tradition began. 16 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

Sacral Heritage Church of St. Francis Xavier and the Treasure Chamber The original church of St. Barbara was built at the end of the 15th century. When around 1715 the worship of St. Francis Xavier began and his image was set up in the church, the volume of pilgrims increased and a larger church was needed. It was built in the years between 1721 and 1725. Of great importance is the Radmirje treasure room that collects the gifts from the courts of Austria, Poland, France and Naples. Of the preserved gold valuables, the golden chalice with a paten, the work of the Parish master R. J. August (1760), and the precious stone covered monstrance, the work of the Vienna goldsmith J. J. Wurth (1746), are of an especially exceptional quality. The baroque mass vestments include maniples donated by the empress Maria Theresa (1750), the Polish queen Maria Josepha (1753) and by the mother of the French king Louis the 16th (1763). In the oldest, central part of the Radmirje nucleated village is also the Church of St. Michael. The main and the side altars are beautiful examples of gold altars from the second half of the 17th century.

The church houses more than 200 years old, renovated and blessed baroque organ.

Church of St. Mary of the Assumption on the Rosulje Hill The church with it’s cemetery is often a starting point for a hike to the Primož Hill. The distinguishing feature of the church is an old bell called “cinkletl” from 1668 which announces a death of a parishioner.

Church of St. Primus and Felician on the Primož Hill The church was consecrated in 1481 and due to beautiful vistas it provides is a popular destination reachable within an hour by foot from Ljubno.

Church of St. Nicolas in Rastke The Church of St. Nicolas, the protector of timber raftsmen, is located at the confluence of the Žep and Krumpah streams in the valley of the Ljubnica stream, in the Rastke hamlet. The surroundings of the church are often a starting point for hiking to Komen, Smrekovec and the Golte Landscape Park.

Church of St. Jacob in Okonina The Church of St. Jacob is located on a slight slope above the Okonina village. The floor plan of the nave shows a significant similarity to the architecture of the Church of St. Francis in Radmirje.

Bunka (dried neck)

Only top quality meat is used to make želodec, while salami and sausages are made of pork of lower quality. The quality of fat also plays a role. The fat must not contain any meat and should be cut into small cubes for a better aesthetic appearance to of the final product.

The Upper Savinja Želodec The Upper Savinja Želodec (or “stuffed pig’s stomach” in English), an air-dried meat product, is renowned in our municipality as a top quality culinary speciality. Due to its exceptional sensory characteristics, it has become increasingly sought after in recent years and indispensable. It has a protected geographical indication for the Upper Savinja Valley, since this is the only Subalpine climate where natural drying of this meat product is possible. Drying is performed in wooden storerooms or storehouses that can still be found on some farms. For this purpose,

the Association of Producers of the Upper Savinja Valley Želodec was established and annually organizes an evaluation of this culinary speciality in May. Želodec is still one of the most important foods served at large events, during holidays, weddings etc. The production of Upper Savinja Valley Želodec is registered in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.

did you know? In the past, serving želodec was very simple: a piece of bread, a piece of želodec and a knife. Every person used to cut želodec with a knife by themselves, but today it is served cut into thin slices with each slice slightly covering the other for a maximum of one third. This way, when you lift a slice of želodec, the other slices remain untouched. None of the carefully selected side dishes should be put on slices of želodec – this is the only way to enjoy the genuine look and aroma of the slice. Known personalities were also fans of Upper Savinja Želodec: the bishop of Ljubljana, Thomas Chrön, the English king George V, The Yugoslav king Alexander Karađorđević, the president of SFR Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito.

the process of making The process of making želodec requires a lot of careful work. It starts with the breeding of domestic swine. Besides mixing the meat mixture for

the želodec, it is also very important where it is dried. Good climatic conditions and careful care during drying are two of the prerequisite for

making a good želodec. Upper Savinja Valley želodci become dry sometime in May and can be found on offer at tourist farms and various other farms. tourist guide municipality of ljubno 23

The Smell of Baking »Mother, when will you be baking again?« I used to ask my mother almost every day. Whenever she lit a fire in the brick oven, the day became a holiday. Not only did the entire clay oven heat up, throughout the home spreads the scent of resin wood and soft smoke. When mother was making dough, we were all tiptoeing around the house as if we were all afraid to awaken the seven kindly dwarves in wicker baskets. When after baking, all the house was full of the fragrance of fresh bread, we felt like untouchable lords. These respectful words about bread were written by Ivan Sivec in his story titled Bread Sleeps at Night. Even our grandmothers and great grandmothers can testify that there was no greater holiday at home than baking of bread. “When the aroma of fresh bread on the table spread, this was our holiday of the crunchy crust, our holiday of the fragrant crumb, our holiday of homemade bread”, reminisces Sivec about his childhood years and the same applies to our people who experienced the magic of baking bread in a brick oven.

Ajdnek Ajdnek is a typical Upper Savinja Valley speciality, a precious cake made of buckwheat and wheat flour, filled with walnuts and sweetened only with honey. Despite the fact this is one of the first confection that was made in the Upper Savinja Valley, it has only gained wider recognition in the last ten years. It used to be a tradition to prepare ajdnek on the All Saints’ Day and other bigger holidays. Back then, buckwheat was not as appreciated as today and white flour was the symbol of prosperity, thus they baked ajdnek instead of cake with walnuts. 24 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

Žlinkrofi Žlinkrofi (boiled dumplings) are a popular pasta dish made all over Slovenia, but with various fillings. In our region, the most famous žlikrofi are made with meat filling. Minced cooked dry meat, or even better, a good sausage with added ingredients and aromatic plants are a foundation of a good filling.

Štruklji Štruklji are made from pulled dough. The recipe is simple, but a skilled hand and plenty of experience are required for the dough to pull well. Štruklji can be sweet, salty, with buckwheat, nuts, and tarragon filling. Different fillings, different flavours. Štruklji are cooked wrapped into a kitchen cloth or in a silver foil in a salty boiling water and can be prepared with greaves or crumbs. They can be served as a main dish or a side dish.

Cheese If you are a cheese lover, you should definitely visit local farms. They use domestic cow’s milk to prepare half-fat cheeses of various flavours and with various additives: walnuts, hazel nuts, almonds, pineapple, dry fruit, white pepper, green pepper, red pepper, chives, tarragon, basilica, parsley, a mixture of herbs, cumin, horse radish, garlic, onion, olives, bell pepper and more. Thy also make smoked cheese and also low-fat cheese by order. The offer of cheeses in Ljubno is truly diverse and will please even the most demanding gourmets. tourist guide municipality of ljubno 25

Ski jumping has been a part of Ljubno for good 80 years. In the period since the beginning of ski jumping in Ljubno, this sport has developed significantly. At the start of this millennium, the jumping hills were covered with a plastic base and installed lighting which made Ljubno one of the places with the best conditions for training and competing in ski jumping in Slovenia. The largest hill that makes it possible to jump over 100 meters was built according to FIS regulations. Since 2006, Ljubno has been successfully hosting competitions of the continental cup in ski jumping for women and in 2012 Ljubno saw the best women jumpers compete in the first ski jumping world cup for women. The competition in Ljubno is the most visited and has the most media coverage of all competitions of the women’s world cup in ski jumping.

The early beginnings of ski jumping in Ljubno Ski jumping in Ljubno began back in the time after the Second World War when the SSK Gozdar ski jumping club was established. People from Ljubno contacted the designer of the Planica ski flying hill, engineer Stanko Bloudek, and signed a contract for building a 60 m ski jumping hill. The construction started in 1949 and ended in 1953 which was also the year the first larger competition on the ski jumping hill took place. The Ski Jumping Club Ljubno as is known today was established in 1973. In 1990s, the members of the club decided to extend the 60 meters jumping hill to 80 meters. The decrepit ski jumping hill was renovated after 2000. A new 10, 20 and 40 meter ski jumping hill was built and later renovated and covered with modern plastic materials. The ski jumping club boasts a very promising youth team, as Timi Zajc and Žak Mogel achieve the highest rankings in national and international competitions. Primož Pikl was the club's first participant who won points for the World Cup in the Olympic Games. tourist guide municipality of ljubno 29

Flosarski bal The Flosarski bal timber raftsmen festival is a traditional ethnographic event that started in 1961. The entire series of events lasts more than two weeks and starts with the Flosfest festival. The concept of the timber raftsmen festival successfully combines the revival of ethnographic characteristics of the town, culinary specialities and sports activities and rich offer of food and

other services. Reviving the timber raftsmen tradition includes the demonstration of timber transportation, launching a timber raft and riding the raft down the Savinja River, a baptism of a new raftsman and various timber-rafting related exhibitions.

a short presentation of timber rafting Flosarstvo (timber rafting) has more than 500 years of history in the Upper Savinja Valley. The bountiful natural landscape and the river have enabled the local population to develop a rich wood industry that had its peak in the period during both World Wars and ended in the 1950s. In mountainous regions, the wood was cut down and then brought into the 30 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

valley via wooden chutes and was then floated or transported with horses to sawmills. The sawed wood was joined into “flos” or rafts, floating vessels made from bound wooden elements (logs, planks or tight wood). Timber rafting was carried out during spring months when the water level of the Savinja River was suitably high. At their destination, they unbound the

raft, cleaned the planks and sold them. Anyone could be a timber raftman, but the dangerous ride on the water demanded a hierarchy to be established as is evident from the titles of the raftsmen: prednek (the front oarsman), zadnek (the back oarsman) and krmaniž (the helmsman).

The Flosfest Festival The festival that is organised every year by the association of Upper Savinja Valley students, has in its almost 20 years of history hosted numerous Slovenian music performers that have filled the Vrbje event venue to almost full capacity. Besides the rich evening programme the festival also has a day programme where the visitors can take part in various competitions and fun games that give the event a competitive note. Despite the fact that the festival is organized by mostly a young team that changes about every two years the members of the Upper Savinja Valley students association have given the Flosfest festival a recognisability as one of the larges student events in the region and beyond.

Culinary Week Culinary Week takes place in Ljubno every year as part of the Flosarski bal and includes approximately seven hospitality providers. Every day of the week, they provide two carefully selected menus with an emphasis on traditional homemade food, at a common price.

Ski Resort Golte tourist guide municipality of ljubno 37

Take a Walk in Ljubno • Theme Trail along the »Ljubnica Stream« 1h

trail

Start your walk in front of TIC and continue up along the road past the elementary school and the municipal building. In front of the apartment building at a smaller crossroads you will find the first information board for the “Tematska pot ob Ljubnici” theme trail. Follow the marking and walk to the pleasantly cold stream of Ljubnica and in the upstream direction. The theme trail ends near the bridge at the fish farm where you can return to the centre of the town via the upper trail, past the Rosulje church with cemetery and then take the path downwards to the Foršt sports field. Turn left and walk past the Fašun house, a typical farmhouse from the beginning of the 19th century. Stay on the right side and thus you will pass the pharmacy to the upper town centre where there is a monument to the Slovenian National Liberation Struggle (NOB). There you will find stairs leading down to the regional road and the bus stop. If you turn left, you can walk along the lower square and past the shop to the starting point at TIC.

You can also extend your walk towards the Gril picnic area. On the theme trail along the Ljubnica you can turn right over the bridge and for the next 30 minutes follow the hiking markings on the moderate slope (Kij-Tiršek-Stari Stani). When you arrive at the crossing of the gravel and asphalt road turn right towards the Gril picnic area following the wooden orientation signboards. After 20 minutes of walking on the gravel road through the wood you will arrive in to a clearing with a vista and a wooden “kozolec”, a hut made of bark (“skorjevka”) and a wooden shack. From here, take the path that leads on the road for a time and then enters the woods following the “Pešpot” (footpath) signs. While descending moderately through the wood, you will arrive to the local asphalt road between Ljubno (on the right) and the Juvanje (on the left).

• »Along the Savinja River« Walking Route 1h

trail

This walk starts at TIC and takes you past the Church of St. Elizabeth via stairs downwards to the Savinja River. Turn right towards the “Vrbje”, which is the main venue for the Flosarski bal festival. There, next to the “kozolec” is the “Preužitkarska” house that in the past served as the retirement house for the old masters of the farm when “the young” took over the farm. Continue the walk in the forest upstream along the Savinja River and you will soon arrive at the “Budnova žaga” picnic area and camp where in the past the Venetian sawmill was used to cut wood which was then joined into rafts and floated down the Savinja River all the way to the Danube River. Only a short walk further upstream, along the river is the Fishing Lodge (Ribiški dom) where you can continue the path past the tennis and volleyball fields to the Kolenc dam. Cross the stream that used to serve the water-powered sawmills and return via the upper asphalt road of the river terrace past the Kolenc tree to the centre of Ljubno. 38 tourist guide municipality of ljubno

You can extend the walk: In this case, keep to the left and you will arrive to the Kegljišče Guesthouse with a nice terrace and playground equipment for children. From here, continue the walk a few meters along the regional road and then cross the bridge over the Savinja River. Turn right and walk upstream along the Savinja River to the Loger tourist farm and the lime kiln at Atelšek’s. Return the same way to the bridge you crossed and head towards the Trbiž settlement. At the end of the settlement turn left onto a slightly rising gravel road that will take you to the higher asphalt local road where you should turn left. After several minutes of walking through the woods and past numerous farms you will arrive to the area of the Savina Ski Jumping Centre where you can see the jumping hills. Return to the centre of the town via the footbridge that leads to the Vrbje venue.

• Path from Ljubno to the Church of St. Primus 1,5h

trail

The Primož Hill is the most popular and probably the most walked of all the paths. The path that is marked with markings rises steeply all the way to the church on the Rosulje hill, through the forest past the Sedlo farm (which provides an excellent view) to the destination at the church that

has several benches. Here, you can enjoy the view of the valley and the Golte Landscape Park while resting and you can extend the path to the lookout point at the Golobst farm and instead of taking the same route return to the centre of Ljubno via the gravel road past the Detmer farm.

Fishing The Ljubno ob Savinji fishing society, the responsibility of which is to maintain the stock of indigenous species of fish and to ensure a clean environment, was established in 1955. The society’s registered office, namely the Fishing Lodge, is located in Ljubno, right next to the Savinja River. The fishing society manages the Upper Savinja Valley fishing environ which is divided into four districts: Savinja 1, Savinja 2, Savinja 3 + trophy section and the fly-fishing pond at the Fishing Lodge. A very popular form of fishing on the Savinja River, from the source of the Savinja River

in Logarska Valley to the Grušovlje dam in Okonina, is fly-fishing of indigenous natural brown trout, grayling and rainbow trout in the natural environment of the Upper Savinja Valley. Here, there is something for everyone - from smaller, shallower and fast flowing waters, deep stream pools and wild rapids, calmer sandbanks and long turns to a calm pond that is suitable for beginners.

Fishing permits can be purchased at several points of sale in the vicinity of Ljubno ob Savinji and at the Ljubno Fishing Family Fishing Lodge.
