From The Editor For many the holiday season is now over and we as approach the autumn season we can look forward to some more local fiestas. October 9th is the Valencian region holiday and this is followed on October 12th with the Spanish national holiday. We also have the local fiestas in Campello for the Moors and Christians between 11th and 15th October. 'As a matter of fact' is a new column beginning this month. It is based on fact and is written for you by Sally Allen. Our thanks go to her for the time and energy she gives in order to write this for you. This month the front cover has a Hallowe'en theme instead of focussing on a local view or place of interest. There are a number of new advertisers for you to take note of. They include therapy and counselling services, home nursing and a company which specialises in putting your photographs and videos onto DVD You may note that some advertisers are now telling us of their plans for Christmas - yes, Christmas. From October 1st it will be just 12 weeks until Christmas Eve and therefore time for us to start our own planning for what we wish to be doing on that all important day. One of the articles this month focusses on the disaster during the fiestas of October 1987, of which I briefly mentioned last month. My sincere thanks go to two readers who came forward with more information for me, and especially to Mrs. Ida Field. Back to thinking about Christmas - We have been wondering about the possibility of getting together a coach full of shoppers to go Christmas Shopping in Murcia and maybe stopping for a late lunch on the way home. Anyone interested please call Jerry as soon as possible. If enough people come forward then we shall organise this for late November. Well, that's all for now. Enjoy the fiestas and keep smiling. Lorraine....x Our website www.mellowmagazine.com allows you to read the magazine online or even download your own copy. You can even see the local weather forecast for the day or week and check for flight arrivals and departures. There is also a “What's On guide that covers local events. Don' t forget, if you are an advertiser with events planned that you can add them to this listing yourself. Call Jerry for more information on doing this. If you have anything that you want to submit to us, be it a short story, poem, recipe or even an article that you feel may be of interest please contact us on the telephone numbers below or by email, also supplied below. Jerry 647 597 319 Lorraine 607 489 815 Email editor@mellowmagazine.com ads@mellowmagazine.com PLEASE NOTE THE CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF ADVERTS IS THE 15TH OF THE PRECEDING MONTH.

Who Was That Person? José Carreras Born on December 5th 1946, in Barcelona, and the youngest of three children, José Carreras is perhaps the least well known of the three tenors. His family emigrated to Argentina in 1951 only to return to Spain within a year having been unsuccessful in achieving a better life. José had always from a very young age loved to sing, even doing so for the passengers on board the ship back to barcelona from Argentina. Later he also sanf to customers in his mothers hairdressing shop. He was eight years old when he gave his first public performance on Spanish National Radio. By 11 years of age he was singing on stage at the opera house in Barcelona and by the age of 18 his beautiful soprano voice had then become the wonderful voice of the tenor that we all know and love today. Having been noticed by the great soprano Montserrat Caballe he was asked to sing with her his first adult role on stage - Gennaro, in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia. By the time he was 28, Carreras had sung the lead tenor role in 24 opera houses across Europe and North America. Married in 1971 to Mercedes Perez the couple had two children - a son in 1972 and a daughter in 1977. Carreras and perez divorced in 1992. At the height of his career in 1987 Carreras faced his biggest challenge when he was given a one in ten chance of survival after being diagnosed with acute leukemia, but with the help of doctors in both Spain and America, along with his own positive attitude and hope he won the battle and made an incredible recovery. Carreras then went on to start the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation so as to help others battling with this terrible disease. Many of the concerts he now gives are benefits for his foundation. Carreras became better known to many people following the 1990 Three Tenors concert in Rome, the purpose of this concert was to raise money for the foundation and was also a way for Pavarotti and Domingo to welcome back Carreras following his illness. Note: Sadly, the world lost the beautiful voice of Luciano Pavarotti on September 6th 2007. May he rest in peace.

La vuelta al cole - Back to School The holidays are over and it’s back to school for everybody. As usual primary school gets going before secondary, this year they returned on September 7th. Children (and parents) get eased back into the routine: until October primary schools only have morning classes which finish at one o’clock. This timetable is repeated in June when the temperature goes up and concentration levels fall. But from October 1st until the end of May it’s a full day of lessons, nine to five, though a few schools now finish at four thirty. It is a long day but there are breaks. At around eleven there is a break for the “almuerzo” when the children have their “bocadillo” (sandwich) and a drink they’ve taken with them to school. They then rush out to the “patio” (playground) for the “recreo” (break). Lunchtime usually starts at twelve thirty and there is a long, three-hour break. Apart from a three-course lunch many schools offer a variety of extra-curricular activities to keep the children occupied and out of mischief. Mostly these extras are just that, extra – optional activities that parents have to pay for if they want their children to participate. School usually finishes at five o’clock and then everybody is free to head for home. However, it’s rare to come across a child who doesn’t do some kind of activity after school – sports, music, English, dance and art are all popular. So, most children find that they don’t have a lot of free time to simply play. When the school day is over and they’ve been to their judo lessons two evenings and English lessons another two evenings, and they’ve done their homework, there just isn’t time for much more. What about the cost of all this? Is free education free? Well, we’re talking here about state schools so there aren’t fees to be paid. And, this year at election time the Valencian government promised to make textbooks for compulsory education free and this they have begun to do. However, for this school year only students in “primero and segundo de primaria” (first and second year of primary) are eligible. Students at these levels are being issued with “bono” (tokens) for 117 Euros which may or may not cover the full cost of text books but will certainly go most of the way. For those whose children are a bit older the cost of school books can be as much as 150 or even 200 Euros. On top of text books most schools issue a list stationery each pupil is to have: lapices (pencils), boligrafos (ballpoint pens), carpetas (folders), archivadores (ring binders), sacapuntas (pencil sharpeners), pegamento (glue), tijeras (scissors) etc. One Spanish consumer organization estimates that the average spent on these extras is around 75 Euros but it isn’t difficult to spend a lot more! It is also quite common for each class teacher to ask parents for a contribution towards classroom supplies. Normally a parent is chosen to open a bank account keep track of who has paid their quota and what has been spent. Yes, back to school and back to the routine and like everything else it’s not free. Has Changed With new management and a few changes to the staff, Cheers has some exciting new ideas and events to bring to you over the coming weeks and months. But first let us introduce you to the staff: From left to right we have: Emma, Lisa, Mel, Linda, Mark, Wendy, Julie and Alan. Emma, with her partner Wayne are the owners while Mark and Mel are the managers.

So what are the changes?

One of the first things you may notice that has changed is the menu. Full English breakfasts are still there, but you can also now choose a lighter continental breakfast; most of the menu is now home cooked which brings a wider choice and an even higher quality to the food. More healthy options are also available including a range of salad options to accompany your meal. And we are also adding more Spanish foods. Our Terrace Bar has been proving very popular, especially with families, and on Saturdays we now have a Hog Roast / BBQ In the bars we have added a new and rather special special range of Cocktails and Shots. We have also increased our wine list and it’s growing all the time so do ask to see it. On the musical side our planned entertainment is growing. Acts planned for the near future include Spanish guitarists and similar, more gentle alternatives. But don’t worry, you will still be able to enjoy your karaoke. And to make it even easier for you to come along and enjoy all that we now offer, our opening times have been extended. On Mondays to Saturdays we now open at 9 in the morning and stay open right through until 1:30 the next morning. On Sundays we open a little later at 10am but we’re still open through to 1:30 Monday morning. Food is served every day until 11pm. So come along and see us and sample the new menu and drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. You can also take a look at our advertisement on page 16

Pippa Alsop BA (Hons) CQSW, DSW, BC (Acc) Recipe of the month - Garlic Omelettte Method

Ingredients 2 slices dry bread 1 large clove garlic 2oz/50g butter 5 eggs sea salt & black pepper ½ tablespoon finely chopped parsley

Remove crusts from the bread & cut each slice into small cubes. Peel & crush the garlic. Heat most of the butter in frying pan, leaving just enough to cook the omelette. Fry the bread until golden, stirring constantly & adding crushed garlic. Remove from pan & put to one side. Break eggs into a bowl. Beat lightly & add salt & pepper. Heat remaining butter in an omelette pan & tip in the eggs. As the eggs begin to set, tip in the garlic flavoured croûtons & continue to cook quickly, turning the omelette out onto a plate before the eggs have completely set. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley & serve immediately with a side salad. One omelette will serve 2 people. 13

Gardening Tips Most types of planting can be done during October as the soil should be in very good condition now. Plant new shrubs and roses. Any suckers on exisitng roses can be removed. new lawns may also be planted. It is a good time for cuttings to be taken of geraniums as well as root cuttings of other perennials. Planting sweet peas in October will get them off to a good start ready for next spring. Clear away annuals that have now finished. If you have seedlings of verbena, pansies, stocks ot antirrhinums then plant these out now too. Prune oleander and other shrubs if they have finished flowering. For those who like to grow vegetables sow broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, leeks and tomatoes.

Be Crafty Many people enjoy working with crafts, but perhaps you would like to learn a craft you haven’t tried before? In this short article I am going to describe just a few of the many crafts which you might like to try for yourself

Painting on fabrics

Most of us have seen the results of this technique - beautiful designs on T-Shirts and other clothes, but have you tried it yourself? Perhaps you think you can’t paint so you’ve kept away, but painting on fabrics is different. Unlike painting with a brush on paper, painting on fabrics is most often done using stencils - so even a complete novice can produce exciting results. Just imagine how that shirt or blouse with the stain could be transformed - better than new at almost no cost. But you can also decorate runners (think of Christmas time), pillowcases, towels with a special wish, or why not a T-shirt with a favourite picture for you grandchild.

Fashion Beadz

To give your fabric painting the finishing touch you can make a broach with “fashion beadz”. This is a glue with beads already in it. By applying the glue onto moulds or backing materials (broach backs for example) you can create a textured and very attractive design. A wide variety of Fashion Beadz are available. You could, of course, also use Fashion Beadz to decorate materials such as jeans or bags.

Mosaic cards

Everyone has seen mosaic work on walls and floors, but you can also make a mosaic card. With little pieces of special “stones” you can decorate your card with a mosaic design. The “stones” are from a light material, so you always can send your card by post without paying a fortune!

“To Do” Paper

“To Do” paper is pre-printed in a range of exciting and beautiful designs and is used to decorate objects such as candles, MDF, glasses for use with tea lights and many other things. Unlike the thin paper you may have seen used for this in the past, To Do paper is very much stronger allowing easier movement after gluing with less risk of tearing. If you would like to try any of these techniques then take a look at Ilse’s advertisement on page 6 and go along to a workshop.

The 20 Laws of Golf 1.

No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime.

. Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former. 3. Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. 4. Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. 5. No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant “You looked up,” or invoke the wrath of the universe. 6. The higher a golfer’s handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. 7. Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire. 8. Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. 9. Palm trees eat golf balls. 10. Sand is alive. If it isn’t, how do you explain the way it works against you? 11. Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. 1. A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination. 13. All 3-woods are demon-possessed. 14. Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (See Law three). 15. A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. 16. “Nice lag” can usually be translated to “lousy putt.” Similarly, “tough break” can usually be translated “way to miss an easy one, sucker.” 17. The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you. 18. The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. 19. Golf should be given up at least twice per month. 0. All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset. 23

“Black Monday In El Campello”

In the September magazine I wrote a small piece about the explosion that killed 5 people during the Moors & Christians fiestas of 1987 in El Campello, asking whether anyone had any further information about this. I’d like to thank two people for coming forward and speaking to us - John Britland, who was the owner of the first English bar in town and Ida Field, long-standing resident of Busot, Coveta and El Campello. Mrs. Field was able to not only chat to us about the disaster but also supply copies of original newspaper cuttings in both Spanish and English relating to this catastrophe as well as other events that have happened locally. October 12th 1987 became known as “Black Monday” when, during the fiestas on the morning of the symbolic beach landings of the Moors 30 kilos of gunpowder exploded causing the loss of five lives and injuries to thirty five other people. The fiestas were being televised and millions of viewers witnessed the scenes of disfigured and deceased bodies that were spread across an area of approximately 50 metres. Stastics provided in the Spanish newspaper ‘Información’ on the day after the disaster stated that from 1971 up to and including Campello’s accident there had been a total of 35 deaths and 983 injuries due to the use of gunpowder. It is likely, according to reports, that the cause of the explosion was due to the gunners lighting the powder with a cigar. This year's Moors and Christians fiestas are soon to be staged but we don't you to be put off attending by reading this article. Fortunately, accidents such as this are rare and these fiestas are great fun to watch.

Parque El Palmeral, Alicante One may not think of Alicante as the place to go in order to spend time relaxing rather than in the shops and stores, yet only a few minutes drive along the seafront on the Avenida de Elche in the direction of the airport brings you to the beautiful El Palmeral park. From here you have excellent views across the sea. Parking is free and plentiful, especially now the summer tourists have all returned home. Taking its name from the fact that it was built on the site of one of the old palm groves El Palmeral was first opened to the public in 1995. It was designed in two parts - one part for social pleasure and the other part for play. Children of different ages have separate areas of play with the younger children having a playground with suitable activity equipment whereas for the older children there are BMX tracks, a five-a-side football pitch and petanca courts. The park boasts picnic areas as well as a kioskcafĂŠ. A toilet block is to be found near to one of the front entrances to the park, next to the small office manned by the local police. Enjoy a stroll on the pathways that weave around the many water features - pools, lakes, cascading falls, or just find a shady bench and sit for a while and relax. The boating lake is not too large and although the alloted time for taking out one of the rowing boats is only fifteen minutes, it must be noted that the boating lake is totally free. However, to be able to use the boats first you must show either DNI/NIE/Residencia or a valid passport so do remember to take along identification. Whether visiting for a family afternoon out or even a romantic evening for two, this park should bring a little peace and relaxation into your life. In summer the park is open from 9.00am until midnight. The winter opening hours are from 9.00am until 10.00pm. 30

PART II: REGISTERING IN THE TOWN HALL (“PADRON”) In order to get the Spanish residency, the following documents will have to be obtained: 1) The NIE number, 2) The Padron (Registry) in the Town Hall of the municapility where you live in Spain, 3) The Certificate of the registry of citizenship of the Union, which you get at the Foreign Office of the Police Station and then, you need to apply for 4) The Certificate of the Fiscal Residency in Spain, which you can get at the Tax Office in Spain. In the publication of the July edition we approached the subject of how to obtain the NIE number. Now, after the holidays, we are going to approach the next step which is how to obtain the “Padron”, which means how to register in the Town Hall of the town where you live. You will have to go the Town Hall, providing the original as well as a photocopy of your NIE number document and passport, and furthermore as well the original and a photocopy of ONE of the following documents: Title deed of your property, or tenancy contract, or any kind of bill which can be either water bill, electricity bill, telephone bill or tax payments which show your address and your name. Once you are in the Town Hall, you will have to ask for the “Departamento de Estadisticas” (which is the Statistics Department), also called “Censos”, where you will have to ask for the form in order to register in the “Empadronamiento” (Padron). As soon as you have filled out and signed this form, you will have to present it there with all the documents mentioned above (NIE, Passport, Title Deed, etc.). The person who is attending your services will give you a letter of payment, whose fees are at 6´00 Euros. With this letter of payment you will have to go to any bank and pay this fee where you will be given a receipt for the payment. With this receipt of payment from the bank of your choice you will have to go back to the Town Hall, and present it there, no earlier than 3 days from the date of when you presented all the documentation and then they will give you the Certificate of the Empadronamiento (Padron). With all this done, we will have carried out the second step in order to obtain the Spanish Residency. Just as a piece of information (NOT PART OF THE STEPS FOR THE SPANISH RESIDENCY), I would like to let you know that just because you are registered in the Town Hall of the town where you reside, this does not mean that you are automatically allowed to vote. If you are interested in being able to vote, you would need to go to the Town Hall and again ask for the “Departamento de Estadisticas”. There you will need to obtain the form called “Declaración Formal de voto”, which you will have to fill out, sign and present so that in the next elections you can make use of your right to vote, “ius votandi”. 32

Close Up Photography Most photos that are taken are of people or landscapes. The problem that many people find is that once they have photographed their surrounding area, the family, the house, the car, the cat . . . they begin to lose interest and the camera only comes out for holidays and weddings. This is a shame because with digital cameras you can experiment with techniques without wasting film so hopefully this brief article will whet your appetite and you’ll go out and try some close up photography for yourself. When you take photographs, either you (manually) or the camera has to focus the image onto the sensor or film. Lenses have a limit to the range over which they can focus, typically from perhaps 1 metre to infinity. If you want to take a photo closer than this, you normally need to press a button on the camera which will allow it to focus closer. Often the button will have a flower symbol. Once “close up” is selected, the camera will focus successfully at much closer distances - typically down to around 10cms - but the maximum distance that can be in focus is less, often less than a metre. At these very close distances, camera shake becomes very much more noticeable so a small tripod can be useful although no tripod was used with the photos Praying Mantis on this page. Table top tripods are available very Size less than 1 cm cheaply if you find you need one. One of the great benefits from close up photography of nature is how much you can learn from the photos. The picture below to the left is a close up of a praying mantis head but it could easily be an alien from a science fiction film. And how about the “giant” ants on the potato below to the right - ok they were taking away some bird seed someone had thrown for the wild birds. Some photographic subjects are easier to find than others of course, but it just a question of being patient and keeping your eyes open - and of course, always carrying your camera with you. So dig out that camera that’s tucked at the back of the cupboard, dust it off, replace the batteries and get out there and see what you can find in your own garden or terrace - you will be surprised how many insects turn up to have their picture taken. All the photos on this page were taken by Lorraine using a Fujiflm FinePix camera with no additional equipment. 34

How to send an email from Hotmail. For the next few months we will be covering some basic “how to’s” of computing. This month it is emails. As there are so many different email service providers it is impossible to cover them all. However, the basics this article will cover apply to all of them. For your own email service follow the principles covered here but bear in mind the detail will be different. Emails (electronic mail) are documents that are created and transported on the internet. They can be simple documents or have other files (such as pictures or movies) attached to them. This article will not cover attachments. It will only cover sending a basic email by Hotmail. Hotmail is provided by MSN and is probably the most widely used email service in the world. You can obtain an email address, free, by visiting their website (www. hotmail.co.uk). If you have difficulty call into our shop in Poble Nou and we will assist you or set one up for you. Other free providers such as Yahoo and gmail (Google mail) are also available. When you want to send an email you have to visit the provider website and sign in. Once you have signed in, go to your inbox (a folder which contains all of you incoming mail, you can sort your mail after it arrives into folders of your own choosing) by clicking “My Messages”. It is worth doing this first to see if you have any emails that require urgent replies. Once you are in your inbox, you are presented with a list of emails you have received. Click on “New” to open a compose window to create your email. The basic screen has five boxes for you to complete (we will complete three of them). The first “To:” box is for you to enter the recipient’s email address. You can enter email addresses manually or by using the address book on the right hand side of the screen. Email addresses are of the format xxx@yyyyy.zzz (where xxx is the person’s specific address, after the @ symbol depends on the recipient’s email service) generally they are all in lower case Male/Female (small letters) but hotmail will convert if you Ostrich wanted forget this. If you want to send the email to (or both). more than one address, this is possible by separating the email addresses by semicolons (e.g. steve@sandscomputers; sue@ Please Call Now sandscomputers; etcetera; etcetera).

Generally you will not need to complete the “CC:” or “BCC:” boxes. These are for Carbon Copies or Blind Carbon Copies respectively. If you send an email to someone as a “CC” you are telling them this is only really for

their information, the email is really for someone else. Everyone can see the email has been sent to CC’s. If you send an email to someone as a “BCC” this is like a “CC” but no one else knows they have received a copy. These boxes are mostly used in business and are not really appropriate for private or personal use. The next box to complete is the “Subject:” box. It is important to put something in the “Subject:” box so that your recipients know that it is a genuine email from you and is not Spam (unsolicited and, mostly, unwanted emails, the electronic equivalent of flyers put through your letterbox). Spam is also referred to a Junk mail in the hotmail page. Many email providers (Hotmail included) have Spam filters which try to identify Spam and divert them from your inbox to a special folder from which they are deleted 4 weeks later. They identify Spam by means of the address and the Subject heading! The largest box is for your email itself. You can write as much as you want in this box the email will scroll up (moves up the box much like the credits at the end of a film or TV program) to make more space. When you have finished, click “Send” and your email will be sent to the recipient(s) on the list. It really is as simple as that. Bear in mind this is not Instant Messaging (MSN instant messaging is what a lot of the younger people use to keep in touch with their friends). We have known emails take 2 or even 3 days to arrive, however, mostly it is within a couple of minutes. Of course the most important factor that controls when an email is received is when the recipient(s) next sign on and collects them. If they are not signed on at the time you send it, it will be waiting in their inbox next time they sign on.
