Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

The three fundamentfal type of fabrication techniques described by Kolerevic are subtractive methods, additive methods and formative methods. Subtractive method includes laser cutting and CNC milling. Additive method includes 3d printing. This technique uses a head that exrudes a material and layer. Formative fabrication is used to produce complex double-curved forms. Materials are applied by machenical forces and restricting forms. CNC is a technique using computer to do parametric modelling. Data can be directly tramsfferred from computer to model, which is quite convenient and fast in digital gabrication and production.

Week Three

Surface Creation

The surface is created begining with a 150*1508150 mm box in rhino. Different edges on the box were used for the edges of my surfaces. I also divided each edges to get more various surfaces.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

My panellings on the left surface are made by solid panellings and panellings with holes. They are created for artificial light purpose. In addition, the solid surface gives people serurity for staying in. The right surface are created with holes for sunlight coming through. The panellings on the right side are about 8mm, lower than the left side 20mm. This gives the whole pavilion a constrast between two sides.

The front of the waffle structure is thin and it stretches to the back. This variation between the width of the pavilion gives people a good view when they go aroung or go into it.

When I was creating my laser cut file, I firstly enrolled all the surface that I needed. Then, it is important to do dupedge command to get lineworks rather than surface pattern on the top view. When doing laser cut, it is important to have tabs on my pattern, which is for me to fold them together. The final work is to put my patterns in the fablab laser cut templete. During this process, I paied attention to put cut lines and dashed line in different layers for cutting.

Week Five

My boolean form is created by myself using grasshopper. I tried some different patterns and them decided to use this one as my final pattern because it composes a good transition between spaces and the triangle space it created has a response to the pavilion surface.

Isometric

My model is created by the bollen forms. This part I chose for 3D print well represents the space transition and it is the cornor connecting the small part bollen forms and large part booleen form. Thus, it can give a whole view of the pavilion.

Task 01 Matrix I usd grasshopper to make my two waffle surfaces and I tried some different options, inocluding the intersecting surfaces and seperate surfaces. I finally choosed the one with a thin opening on the front and a wide opening on the back side. This space relationship is comfortable for people’s activities and help them get a good overviewl for the pavilion. Then I decided the patterns and I used three different paanellings to get a contrast on both sides, as well as seriously considered about sunlight and shadows.

Task 02 Matrix I used grasshopper to do the boolen form. Firstly, I put different attraction points and have a test to decide my final attraction point. Then I tried some different patterns such as circle and cones. Finally, I shoosed the pattern designed by myself for my task 2 pattern.

Week Six

Final Isometric Views

The small boolean form cut the solid and makes open spaces with triangle shapes. This side is with small patterns and allows sunlight to come through.

This side is creaded by larger booleen forms, which created more open spaces and have a good transection. It has a clear contrast with the small pattern sides, responsing to the waffle disign.

Solid panels with holes is created for artificial light during night. These panels are placed around the surface like a circle, which can create a good light view and shadows at night.

Perforations on the surface allows sunlight coming in to get good illumination during the day.

The corner here is the intersection between large pattern forms and small patterns forms. The foundamental open space created by my pattern is triangle and the space is streching from this cornor.

Spaces at the bottom are under the solid, ehich composes a darker space.

The thin opening on the front allows people to go through and have a wider view when they go inside. This allows people to have a full view for the pavilion, including all attraction points.
