I have a master degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon and during this period I had the opportunity to study abroad in two exchange programs, one year in Belgium and one year in Japan. Regarding my working experience, I fulfilled a total of one year internship, half in Portugal and half in China, being now a member of the Portuguese Architects Association. I love new challenges, facing them as opportunities to learn. These experiences have enriched me with several characteristics: • • • •

2012 started at the Graduate School of Engineering of The University of Tokyo presented at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon

In the present study is sought to understand the context and characteristics that can make a space livable in the metropolis of Tokyo. To this end, it was made a theoretical and practical dissertation about it, in order to propose a suitable project intervention and contribute to the appropriation of spaces for people in an attempt to promote cohesion and contact between them, against the current trend for isolation. The design had the following objectives: to develop a solution, in the scale of the city of characterization of the hinge area chosen from three references of contemporary Tokyo, including Shibuya Station, Omotesando and Yoyogi Park; boost the urban reality in an integrated context of a very thorough occupation of the whole ground area with offices and commercial buildings that represent the great mass built; a structure of experience designing multi-functional, providing a meeting place of permanence and social dynamic that goes against the lack of public spaces in Tokyo; a set of buildings, consisting of restaurant space, public baths, art gallery, shopping and a social center that meet the needs of the general population, paying particular attention to the homeless; treatment of the public spaces, creating a green rooftop over the commercial area.

2011 Graduate School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo

The project to develop is for a retired lawyer, seeking isolation from the busy life and a place to enjoy his hobbies (reading, painting, tea ceremony, contemplation of nature). The site is located in a residential area where the exterior views were not particularly stimulating. The conceptual strategy was to create a house that offers protection from the street and is focused in its inner space. The exterior wall works as a border, delimiting territory. Another intention was to maintain and respect the heights of the surrounding buildings, as well as creating a faรงade that maintains the residential area character and at the same time does not permit to see the protected interior space. The concept of the U House appears adapted to the site in a shape of an U, turning the back on the street and generating an interior patio on the center, from which a succession of spaces are organized taking in consideration a gradation of privacy. The tea room is treated as a different and elevated space, where the promenade architectural before enjoying the space itself is crucial.

The entrance on the site is done by contouring the façade wall and with a slight ramp, leading to a sequential spatial experience. Walking around this “barrier” suddenly a patio is encountered, where a first level garden is located. The interior liveable areas are organized around this exterior space, where the day areas appear first, such as the living room, dining room and atelier, with a quite open spatial experience. A second smaller patio permits the light to enter on the living space and kitchen. The technical areas, such as kitchen, storage, toilet and Concept

The reflection on the rehabilitation of this area urbanely discontinuous involves the construction of collective areas, local facilities, small businesses and qualified public space, integrated into an orthogonal grid created from the guiding axes of the site. To ensure its urbanity, a system that supports the private individual and collective social space is proposed. The built mass of housing is part of the grid created parallel to the water, while trade emerges perpendicularly and allows a connection of housing blocks in the ground floor. The combination of street retail with residential space brings new dynamics to the place, appearing small plazas and creating moments of permanence, marked by different platforms that help overcoming the slope. An orthogonal grid was adopted that is connected to the site along the lines of its orientation. This mesh is structural for the organization of outdoor space, creating the circulation with wooden decks that connect the whole area of intervention. Ramps are also created, so all space is accessible by mobility disabled people. The permanence zones are dotted with cobblestone and in the larger square the stereotomy is different. The urban system promoted to boost this area has permanence areas associated with different textures, green spaces of varying density and other punctuated with street furniture. As an exception to the mesh, there are two ways in basalt, for conditional access to supplying the commerce. A gravel pedestrian path also breaks the grid and connects the old core of Arrentela the top of the observatory, associated with multifunctional space. In the square near the river, a green corridor crosses it in an organic way and with this direction consists in an exception to the guideline grid.

With respect to the living space, just the block at the top of the hill has three floors to avoid building in height. Only one block has housing on the ground floor, the remaining seven have been released to the commerce and services. Prototype

2009 Faculty of Architecture of The Technical University of Lisbon

The objective was to create a small prototype of 30m2 that could temporarily provide shelter for three people in an emergence situation or disaster. This prototype had to be aggregated with four, creating an urban structure in an interior of a block. Considering the minimal area, it was first thought on the ´motor` of the house, positioning the cooking and bathing area closer to the entrance, as a service area. These parts of the house were illuminated by zenital natural light. There was a more private area for sleeping and a more public one, for socializing and meals. These two areas were physically separated by a patio, which gives the opportunity with contact with the exterior but still private because its access is only for the residents. The construction followed the case study houses logic, using pre-fabricated materials in order to reduce construction costs and time. The aggregation was done creating a central commun area for all the prototypes, where people could gather and socialize.

Dog-House Extension Designed and built by myself

Extension for a dog house, located in a backyard. The dog house already existed and was to be integrated in the design and to be allocated inside the new structure of extension. This extension should provide shading for the dog, storage with a removable part on the roof and place for the dog-plates for food and water. A green rooftop was proposed, allowing the existence of aromatic herbs. The construction of the dog-house extension was built by myself, with a wooden structure and a skin of wooden slats.
