Here at THRIVE we’re all about fun. We like to kick back, kick up our heels, kick it and generally kick… well you know. And that got us thinking, if our purpose is fun, why not focus on fun with a real purpose? Et voilá, the November issue. Because Decatur lives to thrive! Like the Decatur Young Guns, a young professionals group formed expressly for networking disguised as fun disguised as networking. So you’re working (it) but you may not even be aware of it. And the Young Philanthropists, who give to live but by golly they’re going to inject some entertainment into it – after all, what’s more fun than making others feel good? And they got barbeque and a trolley ride out of it, to boot! The Boys & Girls Club of Decatur makes fun foundational, starting at age 7 and giving club members the chance to find entertainment and enrichment in all aspects of their lives. And the Arts Council says art, like fun, is all in the way that you view it— functional or frivolous. You can find art anywhere – like in the beautiful blacksmithing they’re showcasing. Fun extends to food, too, as you’ll see firsthand with a stop at Bistro Five Thirty Seven, the Richland Community College Culinary Program’s new restaurant. Tomato gastrique, cheddar grits anyone? (Yes, the answer is yes.) Wherever you look, focus on fun – because that’s a purpose we can all get behind!

Real Men Wear Pink Fridays turned pink in October to bring awareness to breast cancer. Schools, businesses and community members brightened up the day with vivid hues to remind women to get an annual mammogram, celebrate survivors and honor those who have lost their battle.
Check Your Seat
The Macon County Health Department held a free child safety seat check at St. Mary's Hospital on October 17 arming guardians with viable regulatory information. Free car seat checks are held the third Tuesday of every month. Call the health department for more information.

A look back at last month’s happenings
Dennis Project Night Dennis Lab School invited parents and community members to attend Project Night on Thursday, October 9. Students from all grade levels presented posters to explain current projects they are working on in their classrooms. Presentations allowed the students to practice 21st century skills.
MU Homecoming Hundreds of Millikin University alumni visited Decatur during Homecoming weekend. Activities included reunion receptions, a driving tour of Decatur, and athletic events including the football game played on the new turf. Sierra Boggess, Broadway actress and 2004 Millikin alumna, also performed a concert to benefit the building campaign for Millikin's worldclass Theatre & Dance program.

Boo at the Zoo
The Decatur Park District scared up another year of Boo at the Zoo at Scovill Zoo. Day and night, young and old, there was something for everyone at this event. 2014 is the "Year of the Pumpkin" with a community pumpkin carving contest and a character challenge.
Food Drive
On October 10 Decatur proved once again that the community has a heart of gold. The WSOY Community Food Drive surpassed the goal by raising well over 1,000,000 lbs of food. Food and monetary donations benefit several local food pantries.
Sand Creek Race On October 11 runners took to a 4.4 or 7.6 mile trail run through the beautiful Sand Creek Conservation Area.

Fun with Purpose for Boys & Girls Fun with Purpose for Boys & Girls
Down on Jasper Street, they’re growing futures— and having fun doing it. The Boys & Girls Club of Decatur gives kids who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity the chance to enhance their potential. All that fun comes with a purpose, says Executive Director Bruce Jeffery. Take Thanksgiving, for example. They typically receive 125 baskets from the community’s Judy Mason Thanksgiving Basket drive. “85% of our total membership of 900-plus kids comes from low-income homes,” says Bruce. “It’s a token of our appreciation and helps motivate them.” Year-round, the Club provides entertainment and enhancement for kids age 7 to 18. Membership is only $1 per year and has been since the day it opened. All activities are offered at no cost to families, but the kids owe the Club a report card once a quarter if they want to keep coming. Drop to even one D or F, and required academic sessions kick in. In fact, that’s one of the biggest ways community members can get involved, Bruce says. “Our biggest thing is homework. Tuesdays through Fridays we do homework from 3 to 5, and we can use help on any given day.”

completed dance team tryouts. Character and leadership programs, girls programs and regularly scheduled outings like trips to the bowling alley and Scovill Zoo keep things rolling. The Club itself offers endless fun, too, with activities like Play Station (Bruce himself still gets in a game of Madden every once in a while), pool, foosball and more. Thursdays are Teen Nights, and they’ll typically draw upwards of 60 to 70 attendees. Special events keep motivation high as well, with the upcoming Annual Meeting (the 42nd in history) as a chance for Club members, parents, volunteers and board members to come together and celebrate the kids. In December they’ll host the big guy (Santa, not Bruce) for 100 select Club members at a Christmas party honoring those who’ve displayed especially good behavior and attitude and who’ve lived up to the ideals the Club conveys. “We do something like rent the YMCA, go skating or such,” says Bruce. Purposeful fun perpetuates itself inside the Club, and anyone can be part of it, whether by paying the $1 fee or being a positive role model. You can volunteer by filling out the application on the Club website (www.decaturilbgc.com) or stopping by the Club at 859 N. Jasper.
A new feeding program giving kids a healthy meal on Tuesdays and Fridays can also use support— preparing meals for 130-plus kids is no small task. As the kids’ bellies and brains are fortified, their opportunities for entertainment abound. At press time basketball was about to start up (they’re always looking for coaches), and they had just

Art is FUNctional When I talk about art with people, especially young people, I try to emphasize the fact that the arts touch so many aspects of their lives that they often take them for granted. My standard phrase is, “Everything that you do that is interesting, fun or an expression of your personality has something to do with the arts,” whether you participate or appreciate art. Do you read books or write stories or poetry? Do you sing, play a musical instrument, or listen to music? Do you dance? Do you take photos? Do you watch movies or plays? These are all expressions of the creative impulse inside all of us. This impulse is so strong that we often try to find ways to add a creative element to our basic necessities: food, shelter, and clothing. The culinary arts, preparing fine food, make the need to regularly nourish our bodies a more interesting experience. You may find that you enjoy cooking enough to enroll in the Richland Community College’s Culinary Arts program or you may just want to dine in the new Bistro Five Thirty Seven at Richland.
Some people may even take a job that wasn’t intended to be a means of artistic expression and get creative with it. A great example of this will be on display in the Anne Lloyd Gallery throughout November, the Art of Blacksmithing. Six Illinois artists have combined the ancient craft of blacksmithing with a fine art sensibility and will open your mind to the possibilities of forged metal beyond the simply horseshoe. The pieces they create are both functional and decorative, from wall hangings and sculpture to furniture and accessories. You can see the blacksmithing process up close and personal at the First Friday gallery event on Friday, November 7, from 5-7:30 pm at the Madden Arts Center, 125 N. Water St. in downtown Decatur. Weather permitting, Matt Myers will set up forge and anvil to demonstrate and answer questions outside the Center. Come down to this free, familyfriendly event to see the exhibit and participate in interactive “metal art” activities for all ages. You may not think of yourself as artistic until you stop to consider just how many of the choices you make every day are creative ones.
You may buy a house because of how it looks or how you imagine it could look when you’re done painting and decorating it. For most of us, a house isn’t really a home until we make it our own. You might be able to create what you need, or you might buy a painting by a local artist at Gallery 510 or have a skilled woodworker like Wade Watson or Chuck Beck craft a piece of custom furniture for you. The clothes we wear are more than just a way to protect from nature’s elements. They’re an expression of who we are. You might make them yourself, or you might get a hand-made dress from the Gypsy Soul Revival artists.

Tender, perfectly seasoned and with something called tomato gastrique (a really wonderful, light sauce) atop the chicken. Yummy cheddar grits alongside, paired with Brussel sprouts that were actually quite good as Brussel sprouts go.

Fabulously flavorful without being overly heavy, and the twist of asparagus ups the interest. I went with the Grilled Chicken. Funny, because in my head it would be a sandwich, but when it came out, it was… chicken, beautifully plated and fabulously smelling, but with nary a carb

Young Philanthropist Giving Circle (YPGC) offers a special idea to young professionals in the Decatur Community. It’s an opportunity for up-and-coming leaders to become trailblazers in a common mission of greater impact through shared giving. Members contribute $125 or $200 as a couple to create two pools of funds. A portion of each contribution is pooled into actionable funds put to work, while the remainder becomes endowed for future growth and impact. Members have choice and voice on impact of community focus and specific program through four meetings each year culminating on Giving Tuesday, as the membership comes together to grant the current year’s funds to the program chosen by the group. During the past couple of years, YPGC has offered members access to places and venues not normally open to the public. We were one of the first events in Bruce Nims’ Texaco Station on Main Street, meticulously restored to all its 1940s glory. The James Millikin Homestead served as the backdrop for this year’s recruiting event with full access including the lookout tower. The 1912 Barn in Niantic is slated to be our third event venue for 2014. At presstime, YPGC is looking forward to an instructional line dance event complete with a barbecue-style menu. This year provided an exciting bonus opportunity. Through a special $50,000 grant from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, YPGC members chose to grant 10 $5,000 grants, keeping in mind Mr. Buffett’s chief focuses
of serving children and alleviating hunger. On September 25, a group of YPGC members had the honor of awarding those 10 grants as they travelled by trolley throughout the city. The day began at the NE Community Fund (NECF), whose mission is to help families in need by providing food, clothes and other types of assistance. We visited at a busy time as folks were gathering to put together their food baskets—a stark realization that this was in essence “grocery shopping” for the month. The grant NECF received will go to create special age-appropriate items for children to add to their family’s baskets. Our next stop was Dennis Lab School, a joint venture of Decatur Public Schools and Millikin University that provides a unique curriculum called Project-Based Learning. This grant will be utilized for “Try it Tuesday,” an opportunity for the entire student population to be exposed to a unique, nutritious food item on a weekly basis in an effort to engage students in healthy eating habits. The Decatur YMCA received our third grant of the morning for its Early Learning Readiness program. This program through a pilot from Y-USA engages informal caregivers and arms them with skills and knowledge to help close the achievement gap and prepare these children for kindergarten readiness. We continued the day with stops in Decatur Public Schools. Parsons Elementary and South Shores School in conjunction with local churches had similar programs offering Friday Buddy Backpacks to provide snacks and food for children who might go without

Eisenhower High School students who participate in Operation Calculus received their grant to add a student support counselor, provide job-shadowing opportunities and support completion of college applications and scholarship forms. The 21st Century after-school program provides enrichment and extended learning time at Stephen Decatur and Thomas Jefferson Middle Schools and Eisenhower and MacArthur High Schools.
The day wrapped up with a visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur. Bruce Jeffery, executive director, had toured the community with us as a YPGC member throughout the day and was enthusiastic in sharing the goals and missions of Boys and Girls Club. He plans to put the grant to work in a program he calls Triple Play, offering members exposure to adopting a healthy diet, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and developing a lifelong commitment to fitness.
Local non-profits were also recipients of grants. Girl Scouts of Central Illinois will put their grant to work outside the building with an urban garden offering the chance to cultivate barren ground into green space for healthy living lessons and physical activity. Decatur-Macon County Opportunities Corporation, a forerunner in serving the hunger needs of Macon County seniors, will offer weekend meals for homebound seniors.
While this year was a unique chance for YPGC, future opportunities will continue to enrich and educate with the hope of inspiring a new generation of philanthropists.

Thrive asked Economic Development Officer Patrick Hoban a few questions recently. He divulged his Decatur favorites and gave us a look at what he's been up to this last year with the City of Decatur. Tell us about your Vision for Decatur. Right now we are known for our great people making great products. We also ship those great products and that arm will grow with the Midwest Inland Port. What most people don’t know is Decatur creates great products, too. If our innovative arm grows, so will our manufacturing and shipping arms. Everything is related.
How are you working to grow Decatur? Communication. Econ Dev execution comes down to information and relationships. My job is to get the right information to the right people at the right time. This creates inquiries that lead to projects. In-house projects, community projects, development projects and company projects. When we start and finish our projects, we need to tell the world and ride the momentum.

do you have a Favorite family outing? That is a tough one. There are so many things to do. I would say it is a 3-way tie between the Zoo, our new Mini Golf Course, and the Oakwood Street Festivals. We love animals, competition and live music. What is the most unexpected thing to do in Decatur? Disc Golf. I don’t think most residents realize we have a free course to play. Just pick up some discs at Play it Again Sports and enjoy walking the hills of Nelson.
What is the most exciting thing coming to Decatur? Open Access Fiber Optic Broadband. Economics is the efficient allocation of scarce resources. Economic Development is the development of scarce resources. Prospects are looking for workforce, water, rail, roads and now fiber. With community-owned fiber, we will increase Internet speed while lowering the cost.
