District 3-5A

Barbe Buccaneers The Barbe Buccaneers were the cream of the crop in 2009 sitting atop the District 3-5A standings. The Bucs were 9-3 overall and undefeated at 4-0 in District 3-5A. What is impressive about those stats is that Barbe lost their starting quarterback in the fourth week of the season. The Bucs persevered through the loss to still win four of their last six games on the schedule to make it into the playoffs. Quarterback Jared Foster suffered a broken collarbone in week four. In the final regular season game of the year against the Sulphur Tors, the Bucs were down 21-3 at half time.

After a six week layoff, Foster had nursed himself back to help enough to come into the second half of the game and bring the Barbe Buccaneers from behind to pull out a victory 22-21 over the Golden Tors. Then the Bucs entered the post season and beat South Terrebonne 57-22 in the first round of the playoffs only to lose the next week to Hahnville 38-27 to be eliminated. Legendary Head Coach Jimmy Shaver is entering his 33rd season for the Buccaneers. Shaver has been in coaching now for almost four decades including stints at St. Louis for four years and a couple of years at the

beginning of his career on the junior high level. The Barbe Bucs were an offensive powerhouse last season. The Bucs offensively scored 444 points in their 12 games. The good news for the Bucs is that senior quarterback Jared Foster is returning to the huddle to lead the Bucs spread offense. Also, Foster will have at his disposal junior wide receiver Tre Goodley and senior wide receivers Jarreth Rougeau and Ty Taylor. Shaver will have his hands full though restructuring his offensive line. The Bucs lost their entire offensive line to graduation. Shaver will also have an all-new defense

CECP Coach: Garrett Greig. this season. The defense was key last year, allowing only half the points that their offense scored for them. The Bucs will have defensive lineman Isaiah Lewis back but will need to structure up a new defense to run the 3-man front scheme. Shaver says that the Bucs’ size on both of the ball is smaller than previous seasons. He also said that the defense might not be as dominant but does have good speed. On paper, the Bucs are not as good as the two previous seasons but Shaver believes that with the speed and agility his squad possess, they can be successful. The Barbe Buccaneers have a very stout schedule traveling to powerhouses like Rummel and Evangel. That

doesn’t even take into account their very tough district schedule against a very good Acadiana team, Lagrange and their rival, Sulphur. The Bucs lost a lot of players from a season ago, but with a full compliment of receivers and their starting quarterback healthy again, the Barbe Bucs just might light up the scoreboard this season and sit atop District 3-5A again in 2010. For all the Buc fans out there, you can listen to every game on Cajun Radio 1470 am each Friday night of the season beginning at 6:45pm.

LaGrange Gators

The LaGrange Gators enter the 2010 season on somewhat of a high note. The team won three out of their last four regular season games and was poised to go deep into the playoffs in 2009 until they hit a stumbling block, losing to Hahnville in overtime in the first week of the 2009 playoffs 38-32. The Gators finished with a record of 7-4 and 2-2 in district play. Head Coach Jules Sullen, who graduated from LaGrange in 1988, is entering his third season for the Gators. Coach Sullen has 15

years of coaching experience under his belt. He has coached in Houston and was head coach for Peabody High School in Alexandria for four years. The Gators will have 20 seniors on their roster this season, plus six offensive and five defensive starters back for the team. First for the Gators will be versatile player Darius Edwards, who will play many roles – quarterback and running back on offense and defensive back on the other side of the ball. Also playing both sides will be Fred Galloway, the Gators’ wide receiver and defensive back,

along with Aaron Sam, who will serve as running back, and defensive back. The Gators offense will have some key players in 2010. Last season, the team scored 297 points on offense. Coach Sullen will look for more offensive output this year in a very tough district 3-5A. Offensive lineman Deidrick Bushnell will head up the offensive line for the Gators while quarterback Darius Edwards commands the huddle. The Gators also look for running back Courtney Brown to gain positive yardage on the ground for LaGrange.

With five starters on defense, Coach Sullen will rely on key players like defensive lineman Kevin Tankerson to take charge and stop opponents up front. The Gators, defense last season only allowed 162 points, which is an average of less than 15 points per game. Tankerson will have help with key players like defensive backs Fred Galloway and Aaron Sam and linebacker Elijah Williams. The LaGrange Gators have a tough schedule ahead of them in 2010, starting with their first game of the season. They will take on one of their rivals, the Washington Marion Charging

Indians, at home on September 3. LaGrange beat Washington Marion in 2009 46-10 so the Indians are sure to be looking for revenge. The other game on the Gators’ schedule you don’t want to miss is the face-off with the Barbe Bucs at Mims Stadium on October 29, renewing a rivalry that goes back many years, when Barbe and LaGrange shared the same stadium. Hold on LaGrange fans, if the Gators have that spark they showed late in 2009, the purple, gray and white nation just might have something to cheer about in 2010.

Sulphur Tors

The Golden Tors of Sulphur have gone through some changes in the past year. After a disappointing 2009 season, where the Tors went 4-6 and winless in District 3-5A at 0-4, Sulphur made a coaching change. Longtime defensive coordinator Harold Fusilier will take over the helm. Coach Fusilier is known for running the Tors’ 4-3 defense for years. He takes over a program that boasts 200 players in the football program from freshmen to seniors. In 2009, the Tors missed the post season for the first time in five years. With the

installation of Fusilier as head coach and the entire coaching staff returning, the Tors want to get back to being a powerhouse and contender in District 3-5A. Offensively the Tors will run multiple sets, trying to take advantage of the many skilled players in the program. The Tors’ depth at skill positions is good, but the weakness on the offense lies in the depth of the offensive line. The Tors will start the 2010 season with a new quarterback. Sulphur lost two-year starter Garrett McCain as well as All District 1st Team performers at wide receiver, Will Hassien and

Chip Armelin. Junior Brice Gardiner will be the new starting quarterback for the Tors while seniors Keith Jasmine and Chase Hebert will take over running back duties. On defense, the strength lies in the front seven. The linebackers and defensive line will have the most experience in the Tors 4-3 Scheme. Several underclassmen are expected to challenge or hold starting positions for the Tors, which will create depth for the team in the front seven. The defensive line returns a couple of starters from last year, including senior defensive tackle Cody Mills. If the Tors

have any concerns on defense, it will be the depth they have in the secondary. The defense from 2009 gave up over 200 points to their opponents and the Tors look to improve in the category. New Head Coach Fusilier and the Tors will be strong on special teams. Troy Price returns as the Tors’ kicker after having a very successful freshman year. The long snapper will return as well and there are plenty of personnel to cover the kicks. The only concern for the Tors is replacing their punter, who graduated last year. The Tors look to improve on a winless district

record in 2009. With tough games against powerhouses like Barbe and Acadiana, and an improving LaGrange, Coach Fusilier will have his work cut out for him taking the Tors from the bottom of the cellar to the top of a very competitive District 3-5A.

DeRidder Dragons The Deridder Dragons and Head Coach Eric Parmley are coming off of an 8-3 record in 2009 which saw the Dragons make it into the first round of the high school playoffs. Coach Parmley starts his fifth season with the Dragons and is looking forward to the 2010 season because he will have a good number of players returning. Some of the key losses to graduation were quarterback Samuel Peterson, defensive

lineman Daniel Lyles, and running back Stephen Richmond. The Dragons, however, will have five starters returning on both offense and defense. Senior strong safety Deshavor Everett, senior linebacker Harrison Lewis and senior defensive back Rashad Robinson are all back. Everett and Lewis are also top senior college prospects for the Dragons as well. Taking the helm for the Dragons’ offense will be new starting quarterback junior Jared Holmes. The Dragons will have the most

experience at the receiver position with three returning seniors. Chris Jones, Charles Bailey, and Matryl Beane will be running the routes for the Dragons along with senior tight end Dwain Conway. The key for new quarterback Jared Holmes will be to step up and take over the leadership role and get comfortable with the Dragons’ multiple eye offense that Coach Parmley runs. On defense, the Dragons will run a 4-2-5 defense and will have seven starting seniors,

along with three juniors and one sophomore. The strength and experience for Deridder will be at the defensive back and linebacker positions. Starting senior linebackers Ted Thompson and Harrison Lewis, along with senior defensive backs Rashad Robinson, Jace Morein, Deshazor Everett and Leon Freeman, will surely add the experience and leadership necessary to make the Deridder Dragons a force to be dealt with in District 5-4A. On special teams, experienced seniors Deshazor Everett and Rashad Robinson will return the kicks and punts for the Dragons,

which will surely help the Dragons get great field position on offense. With key district game against the likes of Jennings, Sam Houston, St. Louis and Washington Marion, Coach Parmley is looking to return the Dragons to the post season in 2010. Parmley says that with a good number of players returning and a good off season, he is looking forward to the 2010 season.

Jennings Bulldogs The Jennings Bulldogs are coming off of a very successful 2009 season where they went 8-4 overall and 2-2 in District 5-4A play. The Bulldogs also made it into the playoffs in 2009 winning their first game 41-28 over Belle Chase only to lose in round two against Northside 19-7. Head Coach Rusty Phelps is heading into his 16th year as head coach of the Jennings Bulldogs. His offense last season was pretty explosive, scoring 368 points while his defense gave up 219 points. Of the Bulldogs’ 368 points they scored last season, only 100 of them

were in district play, which was only good for a 500 record in district. Jennings will have five starters returning on offense including senior 1st Team AllDistrict running backs Michael Wilridge and Davondnide Phillips. Phillips had 200 carries last season for 1460 yards and 22 touchdowns. Jennings will be running the same offense as they did in 2009, which is the split back veer. Senior Bryson Abraham will be the Bulldogs’ quarterback again this season. The Bulldogs’ defense will return six starters including 1st Team All-District senior defensive back Aaron Perkins who had five interceptions

last season. Coach Phelps will run the 4-2-5 defense, which was successful for him last year. The Bulldogs this season will also have some young talent joining the defense as three sophomores will be sharing playing time will some seniors. The first district game for Jennings will be a doozie against the Sam Houston Broncos at home on October 8. In 2009, the Broncos beat the Bulldogs by a score of 34-25 so Jennings will definitely be looking for payback. It doesn’t get any easier for Jennings as they will take on St. Louis in Lake Charles on October 14, which will be on a Thursday night. The Bulldogs beat

the Saints 27-7 last year in Jennings. Jennings will then have back-to-back home games in weeks 8 and 9 with the Deridder Dragons come calling first. The Bulldogs will be looking to get retribution this season after losing 21-14 to the Dragons in 2009. In week 9, Jennings will step out of conference play to take on Port Allen. The Bulldogs went to Baton Rouge and beat Port Allen 46-8 last year. The final game for the Jennings Bulldogs will be against Washington Marion on the road November 5. The Bulldogs beat the Indians 34-14 last year, which gave them momentum heading into the playoffs. Coach Phelps said that there are some

key players to watch out for in 2010: senior quarterback Bryson Abraham, senior running backs Davondnide Phillips and Michael Wilridge, and senior corner back Aaron Perkins, who have all been courted by several colleges already. For all the Bulldog fans out there, you have the opportunity to listen to all the Jennings games on the radio every Friday night. Sam Houston Broncos The Broncos of Sam Houston High School were pretty successful in the 2009 football season. The Broncos were 7-4 overall and tied with the St. Louis Saints for first place in District 5-4A with a record of 3-1. They also made an appearance in the playoffs but lost 10-0 to Vanderbilt Catholic. The Broncos come into the 2010 season with a very experienced head coach. Russ Sutherland is at the helm for Sam Houston

again this season starting his sixth season with the squad. Coach Sutherland has over 20 years of coaching experience dating back to the early 90s, with stints at Iowa and Sulphur high schools. Coach Sutherland is 28-23 with the Broncos and has a 71-56 overall record as a head coach. Coach Sutherland’s multiple spread offense will have four starters returning for the Broncos. Junior Jacob Decker and senior Matt Leblanc return to the offensive line. Senior

Billy Sommers will move from offensive tackle to tight end. Senior Donovan Landry also will return at wide receiver. Senior Evan Powell, who has a commitment to play baseball for the LSU Tigers, will handle Sam Houston’s quarterback position. The Broncos’ running game will consist of juniors Osha Jackson and Rafer Hubert. The Broncos’ defense will have six returning starters. All District senior Evan Powell returns at safety while senior Daniel Ellis returns in the

defensive backfield at cornerback. The Broncos will also have the services of senior linebackers Justin Chesson and Jacob Marshall as they head up the line backing core, and seniors Dakotah Finn and Trey Lavergne will return as starters on the defensive line. The Broncos’ kicking game has a one-two punch. Senior Evan Powell will return as the punter, where he made 2nd Team All-District last year. Senior Ben White will handle the kicking duties after starting for parts of the last two seasons.

The 2010 Sam Houston Broncos will be led this season by 24 seniors. The Broncos will run the spread offense and a 4-3 defense this year. The Broncos 2010 schedule proves to be a tough one, with key district games against the likes of Jennings, DeRidder, and last year’s co-district champion St. Louis. Coach Sutherland hopes for another trip to playoff glory in 2010. If you go by Coach Sutherland’s track record, the Broncos should and will be in for 2010.

St. Louis Saints

Coach Mike Johns and the St. Louis Saints are coming off of a very successful 2009 football season after moving up to Class 4-A. The Saints finished the 2009 season at 8-4, including winning a share of the District 5-4A Championship and advancing to the Regional State Playoffs where they lost to Lutcher 25-20. Coach Johns enters his tenth year as the St. Louis Saints’ head football coach and his 45th year in coaching. The Saints are entering the 2010 season with 12 returning starters, five on offense and seven on defense. The Saints

have a strong schedule to go through this season and Johns is hopeful that St. Louis will have another good year. Offensively for St. Louis, they had to replace three offensive line positions and three skill positions they lost through graduation. Johns and the Saints lost All-District lineman Christian Coody, Farid Abushamat and offensive tackle Nick Richardson. The good news is All-District tackle Cade Courville and center Tyler Churchman are returning for the Saints. St. Louis will have depth in the running

back position with All-District player Dillion Berlin and Lucas Leger, who received playing time last season. Darien Bartie, who starts on defense, will also be utilized in the running back and wide receiver positions. As far as the quarterback position, the Saints will have to replace last season’s Drew Francois. The St. Louis Saints’ defensive outlook looks pretty good. The Saints will have seven returning starters on the squad. Coach Johns says that the Saints should be solid up front with three of their four defensive linemen returning. defensive tackles Andrew Gary and Cory Snead, and defensive end Stephen Eccles are all returning. The Saints lost a defensive end and linebacker but have All-District linebacker Collin Todd returning to the defense. Coach Johns says that the Saints secondary has good experience with starters Darien Bartie and Zac Nixon returning, along with Patrick Bice and Ben Flavin, who both got in a lot of playing time last season. The Saints’ biggest hurdle: replacing strong safety positions lost to graduation.

Coach Johns said that if the Saints can keep everyone healthy, they should be okay on the defensive side of the ball. The Saints will have to be successful in key games against district opponents like DeRidder, Jennings, Washington Marion and Sam Houston if they hope to return to the playoffs again this season.

Washington-Marion Charging Indians The green and gold of Washington Marion High School are looking to shine brighter in 2010 after a dismal 2009 season. The Charging Indians went 1-9 on the season and winless at 0-4 in District 5-4A. The lone win for the Indians was in week 2 of the 2009 season when they beat Peabody 14-8. There might be light at the end of the tunnel for Washington-Marion. In the offseason, the Charging Indians got a new head coach, Freddie Harrison. Coach Harrison has seven years of experience in coaching with

defensive back and kick returner. Coach Harrison will look for these key players, along with the rest of the Indians offense, to produce more scores than last season. The Indians only scored 148 points all of the 2009 season. Harrison will implement the 3-4 defense in 2010 for Washington Marion. Returning starters Christian LeMelle, senior defensive lineman, and junior linebacker Desmond Richard will need to lead the defense, who will have nine new starters this year. A big hurdle that Coach Harrison will have to face on defense is to have his team stop the opponent

stints at Westlake High School, St. Louis, the former Lake Charles-Boston and in Ferriday before landing the job with the Charging Indians. In his first year, Coach Harrison will look to run a multi one-back offense for the Charging Indians. Coach Harrison will have five starters on offense returning from last year, including senior quarterback Dwight Barker, who also plays wide receiver. Senior wide receiver Geroski Harmon is another versatile player coming back for the Indians. Harmon can play wide receiver, running back, quarterback,

In 2009, Washington Marion gave up 343 points defensively. Coach Harrison and his team will have their first big test on the opening week of the season on September 3 as the Charging Indians will travel across town to take on their rivals, the LaGrange Gators. The Indians will look for payback from last year, when they lost to the Gators 46-10. According to Coach Harrison, the keys to success for the Charging Indians this season are for his team to mature, adjust and gel together fast. The strength, he said, is that his squad is a hard working group of young men and they are

very athletic. Coach Harrison says he wants to put a good product on the field and not have his team lose track of what’s most important – playing hard, giving it your all, and doing it the right way. If Coach Harrison can have his team buy into that scenario, look for the Charging Indians of Washington Marion to move out of the cellar of District 5-4A.

District 4-3A

Eunice Bobcats

The Eunice Bobcats started the 2009 season a little shaky, going 1-4 through their first five games. That was followed by a winning streak through District 4-3A, going undefeated at 5-0 and winning the district championship. They headed into last year’s playoffs with a lot of confidence and it showed as they beat John McDonough 40-12. The second round of the playoffs, however, the Bobcats stumbled, losing 53-27 to Redemptorist. With the loss, Eunice finished the season with an overall record of 7-5.

Head Coach Paul Trosclair has led Eunice for 15 years. His combined coaching experience is more than 30 years. Trosclair has taken teams to the playoffs 18 times and has 13 district titles under his belt with two trips to the state finals. The Eunice Bobcats have only two starters returning on offense this season, senior left tackle Alex Toepher and senior tailback Jeremy Darby. Eunice will have nine new starters on offense, all of whom are seniors, including senior quarterback Zac Person. Coach Trosclair will run the wing offense that produced over

2,700 plus yards in rushing and over 1,000 plus yards in passing for the Bobcats’ offense last season. The Bobcats’ defense will have a few more starters returning, including including all-district senior linebacker and the Bobcats’ leading tackler, Vondray Vallere. Vallere had an impressive 80 solo tackles last season and 25 assists. Also returning for Eunice is senior linebacker Trey Godfrey, senior defensive tackle Damien Morgan and senior cornerback Trace Troclair. The Bobcats run a 4-2-5 defensive scheme,

which allowed only 47 points in district play last year. The defense will surely miss last season’s interception leader Tyler Fontenot , who had five interceptions and one touchdown for the Bobcats. District play is always the biggest concern for any football team and Eunice is no different. They will have difficult games against Westlake on the road, plus Iowa and Crowley at home. With a new quarterback in the huddle for Eunice, Coach Trosclair hopes he will have an explosive offense like he did in 2009. If Eunice keeps up the momentum, look for them to not

only win their district, but to make it deep into the playoffs.

District 4-3A

Iowa Yellow Jackets The Iowa Yellow Jackets will start a new era in their football program in 2010 with first-year Head Coach Sean Richard. Coach Richard takes over a program that went 5-5 last season and 2-3 in District 4-3A, good for 4th place. The Yellow Jackets made the playoffs in 2009, but lost in the first round to Holy Cross 49-17 to finish 5-6 on the season. Coach Richard will have 18 lettermen returning for the team and 16 returning

starters. The Yellow Jackets will look for their seniors to be leaders on offense and defense. Iowa will have 2009 1st Team All-District senior quarterback Gene Pete running the offense and the Yellow Jackets’ multiple offense. Pete will have a good senior supporting cast in the backfield with halfback Dylan Prudhomme and fullback Robert Moss. Running routes for the Yellow Jackets are senior wide receivers Mason Ceasar, Jamar

Chretien and 2nd Team All-District wide receiver Dylan Williams. The offensive line for Iowa, however, will consist of mostly juniors, with just one senior – center Mike Simien, who’s a good one to have. Simien is a 2009 1st Team All-District center and will be the leader for Iowa’s offensive line. Coach Richard will have nine seniors on defense this season. He will run a 4-2-5 defense led by senior 1st Team All-District

The other seniors on the Yellow Jackets’ defense in 2010 are Josh Denison, Andrew Papion, John Paul Lebleu, Daniel Tranthem, Tyler Chapman, Derek Johnson, and Tyler Leonard. Junior Christian Stewart and sophomore Cody Trim will round out the squad of eleven for Iowa. Last season Iowa had a rough go in district play, losing their first two games against Crowley and Eunice. They rebounded quickly, beating Church Point 39-27 and Northwest 47-6 to even their district record at 2-2. Iowa then lost their final regular season game to district foe Westlake 42-21. Coach Richard and the Yellow Jackets will

be tested early in the season when they take on the Jennings Bulldogs on September 17 at home. Also, three out of the five district games for Iowa this season will be on the road against Crowley, Eunice and Northwest. This could make it tough for the Yellow Jackets to move up in the ranks of District 4-3A. Coach Richard has a positive outlook for the team and his first year as head coach. He’s looking forward to working with a very good coaching staff and a good crop of seniors. With a positive outlook, 16 returning starters and 18 letterman, Iowa could possibly bring glory back to the purple and gold this season.

Westlake Rams

The Westlake Rams enter this year’s football season looking to improve on their 5-6 overall record from last season, and improve on a decent district record of 3-2 in 4-3A. Their district record helped the Rams into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to Patterson. Head Coach Max Caldarera is entering his 36th year at Westlake High School and his 32nd year as head coach. Caldarera has an impressive record of 198 wins to 151 losses and has guided the Rams to the playoffs 21

times. His best finish came in 2007, when he led the Rams to the State Championship, where they lost in a nail-biting 19-18 to Parkview Baptist. Offensively, Caldarera looks for new leadership in the quarterback position as junior Ryan Feagin will take over the huddle for the Rams from Grant Nordberg, who was the Rams’ leading passer last season. The Rams have eight returning starters on offense, but it is a mix of juniors and seniors. Caldarera will look for big input at the running back position to replace Donald James, who had 1447 yards

last year and 17 touchdowns. Senior Tyler Stoddard and juniors Devin Eaglin and Justin Nordberg will head up the Rams’ backfield. First team all-district offensive linemen Gabe Spikes, Trent Toups and Jordan McBride will be the keys up front if the Rams will be successful in running their multiple one back offense. Defensively, Caldarera will have eight starters returning this season; five are seniors. The Rams will have 1st Team All-District players junior Justin Nordberg and senior defensive lineman Chase Schuck . With 2nd Team AllDistrict Tyler Stoddard, Jaylin Hadnot and Zack

Vincent, the Rams’ defense will be stacked with experience. Caldarera looks for someone on defense to step up after losing last year’s tackle and interception leader Ricky Irvin, who had 82 total tackles, 31 assists and three interceptions. The Westlake Rams will also have senior Punter and Placekicker Trey Johnson returning on special teams. Caldarera says the player to watch this season is senior Tyler Stoddard, a 6’2”, 200 lb. free safety. With an experienced defense in place, The Westlake Rams’ only struggle might be on offense, with a new quarterback and running

back. With big district games against foes like Crowley, Eunice and Iowa, the Rams will need to overcome some hurdles, return back to football glory, and return back to the Dome for another run at being state champs.

Assistant Coaches Wilt Ashworth, Brady Carlson, Larry Hollie, Leroy Jackson, Kace Marcantel, Charlie Smith, Jason Wilson, Welborn Ashwort, Troy Gardner, and Tate Woodard.

DeQuincy Tigers The DeQuincy Tigers enter the 2010 season with hope for a successful season. The Tigers were 7-4 in 2009 and 3-2 in District 4-2A. The Tigers also reached the first round of the High School Football Playoffs only to fall to Newman 53-20. Head Coach Brad Kellogg enters his fourth season at the helm for the Dequincy Tigers and takes his 10 years of total experience into this year’s season. The Tigers could be a force to deal with because they have 17 starters returning to the squad, five of whom are

seniors. With 12 starters coming back who are underclassmen, the Tigers will have a lot of experience with starters who have already played in Coach Kellogg’s system. The Tigers have a few players who will play double duty on the field. CJ Carter will play defensive back and running back, while Patrick Dietz will head up the defensive line and play running back as well. Jacob Helton will play double duty as an offensive guard and line backer, as will Aric Allain as defensive lineman and offensive guard.

The strengths for the Tigers on offense, according to Coach Kellogg, are the offensive line and running backs positions. In defense the Tigers’ strengths are the defensive line and secondary. The Tigers will look for all players to be key this season. Coach Kellogg says that the Tigers’ defense must improve from last year and the young starters on offense must produce. The Tigers always have a battle on their hands when they take on their rival, South Beauregard. The Tigers and South Beauregard

will lock up on week 7 of the season in South Beauregard on October 15. The Tigers lost to South Beauregard last season 33-17, so they will be looking for revenge this year. Another key game for the Tigers is Rosepine. The Tigers lost to Rosepine 28-16 last season and will have to travel to their home turf on October 22. The losses to Rosepine and South Beauregard were the only two for the Tigers last season. The Tigers are very young at the wide receiver and quarterback positions and the Tigers have an all-new linebacker core. Coach

Kellogg says that he will be looking for his defense to force more punts and create more turnovers. If the Tigers’ defense can successfully cause more turnovers and put the ball in the hands of the offense in good field position, look for the DeQuincy Tigers to possibly make another run to the post season.

District 4-2A

Assistant Coaches Caleb Cooley, Gerald Glaser, Robert Jackson, William Johnson (NP), David Weldon.

East Beauregard Trojans The East Beauregard Trojans are coming off of a 2009 season where they went 1-9 overall and 1-4 in District 4-2A play. The Trojans’ only win last season was in district play beating Vinton 15-14. Head Coach Robert Jackson is entering his fourth year as head coach for the Trojans and has a 2-28 overall record. He will have his hands full this year rebuilding his team and trying to improve on last season. Jackson’s offense last year only scored 99 points while his defense gave up 340 points. The good

news for the Trojans is that off those 99 points they scored last season, 54 of them were in district play. Offensively, East Beau will have six returning starters including senior quarterback Justin Rutherford. The Trojans will also have returning senior fullback Jacob Kittrell and junior wide receiver Aaron Armstrong. Coach Jackson will be switching up the offensive scheme this year. Last season they ran the split-back veer but in 2010 the Trojans will be switching to the I-formation, spread. It’s a rebuilding year for the Trojans

on defense. They only have three starters returning including 2nd Team All-District Senior Linebacker Jacob Kittrell. Also returning are Linebackers B.J. Smith and Drew Gilchriest. The Trojans line-backing core will be solid, but they will be looking to fill in the gaps on the defensive line and with their cornerbacks and safety positions. The first district game for East Beau in 2010 is against Dequincy on the road on October 8. Last season, the Tigers beat the Trojans 37-0. It doesn’t get any easier for East Beau, as Rosepine comes to town. The Trojans lost to

Rosepine 42-13 last year. In week 9, East Beau will take on the Vinton Lions who they beat last season. The Trojans went to Vinton at squeaked out a 15-14 victory. The Lions will now have to come to East Beauregard to take on the Trojans on October 29. Coach Jackson says that they are looking forward to the new season. Jackson says that they have some depth that they didn’t have in the past and some experience on offense. Jackson says that he plans on throwing the ball more this year and run out of the spread

more as well. Jackson said that his squad had the best summer program they have ever had. There were an average of 25 players at workouts each night this summer, which isn’t too bad for a team of only 37 players. Coach Jackson is currently trying to find some defensive linemen to step up so he can two-platoon as much as possible. Jackson added, “Our kids are excited about this year and so is our coaching staff.” If East Beau’s experienced offense can shine, and if they can overcome their inexperience on defense, they could have a decent 2010.

District 4-2A

Pickering Red Devils The Pickering Red Devils are entering a new era in their football program. After going 3-7 last season and finishing 4th in District 4-2A with a record of 2-3 in 2009, the Red Devils made a coaching change. New Head Coach Lane Cook will begin his tenure for the Red Devils in 2010. Cook had been an assistant coach for Pickering for the past 13 years before getting his opportunity to head up the program this year. The first order of business for Coach Cook will be how to improve the offensive output for

Pickering. Last season, the Red Devils only scored 143 points in their 10 games. The Red Devils will have nine returning starters on the team and 14 total seniors. Cook will have some key players coming back for his offense. Quarterback Zack Roberts will head up the offense with wide receiver Andre Porter running routes for the Red Devils. Cook will have his hands full however with his offensive line. Cook says that a big key for the success of Pickering will be his very young offensive line. Cook will have to hope that the inexperience and youth of his O-Line will

mature quickly and give his quarterback time to throw and open up running lanes for his running backs. Defensively, Cook will have some key players returning. Pickering will be solid on the linebacker core as Gett Thomas, Dontrez Banks and Zack Wardlow will be key in leading the Red Devils defense. Also back for Pickering is defensive end Matt Walker and defensive back Andre Beldon. Coach Cook will be looking for his defense to keep them in ballgames and improve from a season ago where the 2009 squad allowed their opponents to score 295

points in the 10 games on their schedule. Pickering will be looking to avoid playing “iron man” football this season. That is when players play both offense and defense each game. Cook says he has a lot more kids coming out this season for the team so hopefully he will have enough players to have them play only one side of the ball. If it does come down to it however, Matt Walker and Charles Sanders will play offensive lineman and defensive end while Dontrez Banks will be at linebacker and running back. Zack Wardlow will play linebacker and offensive line.

Cook says that he wants his team to be more competitive this year and wants his team to play a full four quarters because they lost too many games late in 09. With key players returning and a fresh outlook from first-year head coach Lane Cook, Pickering might just surprise a few teams in 2010.

Assistant Coaches Brad Ducote, Bo Hinson, Tim Kyle, Phillip Rap, Tony Russell, Danny Smith, and Jeff Smith.

Rosepine Eagles The Rosepine Eagles sat atop the District 4-2A standings last season going 5-0 in district. The Eagles also had an impressive overall record of 9-2. Rosepine lost only one game on their 10-game schedule, and that was to the Jennings Bulldogs 35-17. The Eagles entered the playoffs with confidence but lost a squeaker to Lake Arthur 16-13. The man at the helm for the Rosepine Eagles is Head Coach Johnny Cryer. He has 24 years of coaching experience and has been the Eagles head coach for the last 13 years.

Coach Cryer has an overall record of 71-66 with Rosepine. The Rosepine Eagles look to keep the ball rolling and the scoreboard lit. Last season the Eagles scored 359 points on offense. The Eagles will have six returning starters on offense. Senior Klint White will be back under center as the Eagles’ quarterback. White will have 2nd Team All-District senior full back Kameron Suire and 1st team all-district senior tailback Gary Suydam behind him in the formations. Suydam ran for 1278 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior last season.

The Eagles will have new players running the routes for them – junior tight end Scotty Young and senior wide receiver Brandon Russell will need to step up to help the Eagles’ passing attack. Coach Cryer will also have seven returning starters on defense headed up by 1st Team All-District linebacker Grant Keel. The Eagles are switching from a 4-2-5 defense from a year ago to a 3-4 defense this season. Rosepine’s defense should be full of experience with six of the seven returning starters being seniors. The returning senior starters include linebacker

Randall Aycock, defensive end Kameron Suire, strong safety Tommy Sykes, center Jacob Hill and free safety Brandon Russell. The Eagles will look to be a strong force on defense again this season and try to prevent their opponents from scoring. Last season, the Eagles were stingy as they gave up only 174 points in 11 games, which averaged out to a little over 15.8 points per game. 1st Team All-District punter and place kicker Jacob Hill will also be returning for the Eagles. Hill went 20-of 43 on extra points and 2-4 on field goals.

The Eagles were on top last season in district 4-2A, although South Beauregard was just behind them in the district standings. South Beauregard will be looking for a little revenge after losing 29-22 last year – that faceoff will come on Friday, October 29.

District 4-2A

South Beauregaurd Knights The Golden Knights of South Beauregard are coming off a great 2009 football season. The Golden Knights were 9-2 overall and 4-1 in District 4-2A. The only district loss for South Beauregard was to rival Rosepine. The Knights also made into the playoffs, but lost in the first round to Jones Hodge 51-16. Head Coach Shawn Demeritt enters his fifth season with the Golden Knights, third as the head coach and has a total of 13 years of experience under his belt. The Golden Knights will have 11 returning starters, eight on

offense and three on defense. Demeritt also will go into the 2010 season with 14 seniors on the squad. The Knights will have the luxury of only having three players playing offense and defense for the club. Senior Jordan Johnson will be the Knights’ quarterback and will play defensive back. Jeremy Stratton will play center on offense and defensive lineman while Kain Hungerford will be the Knights wide receiver on offense and cornerback on defense. The Golden Knights offense should be as good, if not better, than the 2009 season. In

2009, the Knights’ offense scored an impressive 383 points against their opponents. With eight returning starters on offense, look for South Beauregard to light up the scoreboard again in 2010. Senior quarterback Jordan Johnson will head up the Knights offense and he will have senior running back Dylan Fowler in the backfield and senior wide receiver Kain Hungerford running pass routes for him. South Beauregard, however, will only see three of their starters returning on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Demeritt will look for key players like senior defensive end

Chipper Walker, along with Jordan Johnson and Kain Hungerford, to take over the leadership roles on defense. The Golden Knights defense will have big shoes to fill from the 2009 squad, who only allowed 187 total points including their playoff game. South Beauregard will have an early test in the 2010 season when on week 3 they take on Iota at home on September 17. Coach Demeritt said that other key games on the Golden Knights’ schedule are in week 4 against Iowa, and rival games against DeQuincy on October 15, and Rosepine, who was their only district loss last season. This year, the Knights get both DeQuincy and Rosepine at home.

Coach Demeritt is looking for the Golden Knights to minimize or eliminate turnovers and avoid injury. Their only weakness is depth, especially on the defense. Demeritt says the strength for the Knights is that they have many players with playing experience and his players have a winning attitude. If the Golden Knights of South Beauregard can keep the positive attitudes with its players throughout the season and duplicate their offensive output from a season ago, they should be successful and stay atop the 4-2A standings again this season.

Vinton Lions

The Vinton Lions are coming off a 2009 season where they went winless at 0-10 overall and 0-5 in District 4-2A play. The Lions proudly display the red, white and blue colors on their uniforms and are looking to make those colors shine in 2010 by bringing back a winning season to Vinton. Head Coach Wendell Lejeune will have his hands full this year rebuilding his team and improving on last season. Lejeune’s offense last year only scored 100 points while his defense gave up 413 points.

In 2010, Vinton looks to pay back all the teams they lost to in 2009. First up will be two road games against Iota and South Cameron. The Lions last season were blanked by Iota 34-0 and lost to South Cameron 46-8. Vinton will then return home to take on the Welsh Greyhounds. In 2009, the Lions were blown out in that game 53-6. The Lions then will have a tough game against the Hamilton Christian Academy Warriors on the road before heading into District 4-2A play for five games in a row.

The first district game for Vinton is against Rosepine on the road on October 7. In 2009, Rosepine beat the Lions 60-8. It doesn’t get any easier for Vinton, as Pickering comes to town. The Lions lost to Pickering 56-26 last year but it was the biggest offensive output for the Lions in 2009. In week 8, the Lions will take on South Beauregard at home. The Lions look to avenge the 41-0 loss they suffered to South Beau last year. In week 9, Vinton will take on the Trojans of East Beauregard on the road October 29. be against parish rival DeQuincy at home on November 5. The Lions will definitely want to win this game and get bragging rights this year since they fell to the Tigers last season 44-14. Head Coach Wendell Lejeune and the Lions will need to improve tremendously on the defense side of the ball this season to prevent their opponents from scoring. Last season, the Lions’ defense allowed a jaw dropping 43.1 points per game, which is hard for any offense to overcome. The Lions’ defense will need to stiffen up and hold their opponents to three and outs and

give their offense an opportunity to get back on the field and score. That will be the biggest key for the success of the Vinton Lions in 2010.

District 5-2A

Kinder Yellow Jackets The Kinder Yellow Jackets enter the 2010 football season looking to improve from last year. Last season the Yellow Jackets went 6-4 and were 4-2 in District 5-2A, which was good for 3rd place. Unfortunately, Kinder’s record wasn’t good enough to vault them into the post season. They look to break away from the middle of the district pack and return to the post season in 2010. Head Coach Jeff Wainright starts his eighth season with the Kinder Yellow Jackets and his 10th year as a head coach. Wainright will

have 15 starters returning for his squad and 15 seniors on the team, so the Yellow Jackets will be experienced. The team will have some key players on offense, including quarterback Blake Trahan. Trahan will have a full backfield with fullbacks Seth Langley and Jeffery Patton, along with running back Ke’Andre Hardison. Coach Wainright looks to improve his offense in the running game from a season ago. In 2009, the Yellow Jackets scored a total of 232 points. Kinder hopes to light it up through the air as well as on the ground with a full compliment of

running backs. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets will have defensive lineman Derrick Ione back, along with Trahan and Hardison as defensive backs. With linebackers Seth Langley and Jeffery Patton on the squad, Kinder should be as successful as they were last season. Kinder’s defense allowed only 145 points in 2009 and they hope to stiffen up even more this season. The Yellow Jackets already know that there are vital games on their 2010 schedule. The game against Elton on September 3 is key because Coach Wainright wants to have

his team off to a good start. In week 10, the Yellow Jackets will take on their rival Oakdale. They beat Oakdale 41-7 last year at home. This year Kinder will have to travel to the opposing house to try for another victory. Coach Wainright plans to run the football more consistently in 2010, but says that he does lack experience in the running back position. He said the strengths of his team and the keys to their success in 2010 will be great defense, speed and a positive team attitude. If all these variables come together, the Kinder Yellow Jackets may inch further toward the top of District 5-2A.

District 5-2A

Lake Arthur Tigers The Lake Arthur Tigers had a very successful 2009 season and are looking for that momentum to carry into the 2010 Football Season. The Tigers came in first in District 5-2A in 2009 and beat Rosepine 16-13 in the first round of the playoffs before losing 35-14 to Many in the second round. Head Football Coach Chad Lavergne enters his eighth season as the Tigers football coach, with a 41-39 record. Lavergne brings 16 years of total coaching experience into this season with a positive outlook, even though the

Tigers lost 16 seniors after the 2009 season. Lavergne says that the Tigers still have many returning starters or players with quality playing time under their belt. New quarterback Aaron Bertrand, a senior, will run the team’s split back veer offense. Bertrand has started five previous games for the Tigers and will have a supporting cast of returning starting linemen like senior guard Conrad Hengens and junior tackles Jasper Martin and Bryce Zaunbrecher, who Coach Lavergne says will be the strength of the offense. With the addition of two new starting

receivers, senior Marcus Poole and junior Cobie LaPoint, Lavergne believes they will be productive in the passing game. On defense, the Tigers have several players switching sides to play defense as well as offense. Conrad Hengens, DeAngelo Thompson, Josh Savage, Trent Hargrave and Bryce Zaunbrecher will all play on both sides of the ball. With the addition of two new starters on the defensive line, Lavergne looks for his defensive front to lead his defense to a successful season. With tough district games against Welsh,

Kinder, and Oakdale, the Tigers will be tested early in the season. The Lake Arthur Tigers’ only obstacle this season is lack of depth. Lavergne says they were extremely deep at almost every position last year, which proved to be invaluable throughout the 2009 season. The Tigers have been playing in 7-on-7 passing tournaments this summer to give the defensive secondary and the offensive receivers more work, which Lavergne hopes will pay off during the upcoming season.

District 5-2A

Assistant Coaches Talbert Courville, John Gay, Wilbert Gilbeaux, Jarrett Granger, and Dwayne Olivier.

Welsh Greyhounds

The Welsh Greyhounds are coming off a very successful 2009 season, where they finished 8-3 and 5-1 in District 5-2A. They also made an appearance in the playoffs only to fall to Ferriday in the first round. Head Football Coach Robbie Gates enters his 15th year of coaching and his 10th at Welsh. He has an 18-13 overall record as head coach and two district titles to his resume. Offensively, the Greyhounds have six starters returning – seniors Jacob Daigle, left tackle Lucas Trahan, right guard Christian

Coleman and quarterback Payton Fox. Also returning on offense for the Greyhounds is last year’s rushing leader junior Nick Hebert, who had 154 carries, 1015 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Greyhounds will have six new starters on offense, all juniors. Payton Fox is not only the quarterback, he is also the team’s punter and on defense he plays the safety position. With the return of the Greyhounds’ quarterback Payton Fox and running back Nick Hebert from last season, Welsh should be very successful in running the multiple offense again this season. Coach

Gates is confident about his team’s experience on offense. He says that it’s the most experienced offensive line Welsh has had in quite some time. Coach Gates has some big obstacles to overcome on the defensive side of the ball. Welsh lost their leading tackler Jordan Hebert and interception leader Casey Trahan. The Greyhounds only have two starters back on defense. Senior defensive end Braiden Jolie will return for the Greyhounds and he was 1st Team All-District last year. Also returning for Welsh is junior defensive end Randall Cooper.

They will be the only two players on Welsh’s defensive with more than one year of starting experience running the 4-3 Defense. With the addition of three sophomores, three juniors, and three seniors this season, Welsh will have a very young defense. Coach Gates feels like they will be faster on defense and hopes that his relatively young defense will be more physical as the season progresses. Coach Gates and the Greyhounds’ will have a tough road ahead in District 5-2A if they want to make it to the post season. Gates says that the Greyhounds district will be very good this

season and every game will be a tough one. With district games against Iota, Kinder and Lake Arthur, the Greyhounds are looking to win the district and head to the playoffs. Gates is excited about the upcoming season and he says he hopes his squad will be competitive and successful.

Basile Bearcats

The Basile High School Bearcats enter the 2010 football season coming off a slightly above 500 record from last season. The Bearcats finished 6-4 in the regular season and 3-2 in District 4-1A, which was good for a middle-of-the-pack finish. That record was good enough to earn them a spot in the playoffs, but they lost in a heartbreaker in overtime to St. Mary, finishing their season at 6-5. Head Coach Tony Bertrand enters his 17th season with Basile and his sixth season as the

head coach. He has a 22-18 overall record. During his head-coaching career, he has taken Basile to the playoffs four of the five years he has been there. Basile will have seven starters returning on offense in 2010. Junior All-Parish running Back Dylan Motte will be back. He had 130 carries last season for 707 yards and 13 touchdowns. Also, senior wide receiver Drake LeDoux rejoins the squad. He had 19 receptions in 2009 for 154 yards and one touchdown, which garnered him the honor of 2nd Team All District. New starting senior quarterback Matt Pruitt will run

the power eye offense for the Bearcats. On special teams, Logan Langley returns for Eunice as the punter and place kicker. Langley hit 23 of 25 point-after attempts in 2009. The Bearcats’ defense will return seven starters, including senior lineback Nick Bertrand, who was All-District, all-Parish MVP. Bertrand had 113 tackles and five sacks last season. Also returning for the Bearcats is senior all-district strong safety Jake Fournerat and senior 2nd Team All-District defensive end Fred Lewis. Eunice will also start a couple of sophomores this season in defensive tackle

Landon Ortego and strong safety Kevin Hardy. One big challenge for the Bearcats’ defense will be continue to stop opposing offenses. Last year the Bearcats’ defense gave up only 181 points, which was second in the district. Eunice will play in District 4-1A, which saw Oberlin dominate the district, going 11-2 and scoring over 500 points. The challenge for Eunice will be to try and stop the high-powered offense of Oberlin when they face them at home on October 15. With other challenges on the 2010 schedule for Basile, like district foes Elton, Hamilton

Christian Academy, South Cameron, and Merryville, it surely will be a very competitive year for all teams in District 4-1A. For Basile, they will look to break away from the middle of the pack and take the top spot away from Oberlin.

Elton Indians

The Elton Indians will go into the 2010 high school football season with a new head coach. First-year Head Coach Kevin Bertrand starts his tenure at Elton, but comes to the Indians with 15 years total experience. One of the challenges for the new head coach will be to improve on Elton’s 2009 record of 2-8; the Indians were winless at 0-5 in District 4-1A, however they were better in 2009 than their record reflected, especially in district play. The Indians lost two of their five games by only three points. The Indians lost to

district foes South Cameron 28-26 and to Hamilton Christian Academy in a heartbreaker, 32-31. Plus they only lost by a touchdown and two-point conversion 20-12 to Basile. There is good and bad news for the Coach Bertrand: he will have 21 starters returning for the Indians this season and 12 seniors on the squad, but all of Elton’s players have to play both offense and defense. Coach Bertrand says that he will be looking to key players for leadership. Austin Bertrand will take the snaps and command the huddle at quarterback. Landon Carmen will be the

Indians’ running back. Alvin Richardson will be the Indians’ key wide receiver and Corey Monceaux will play tight end. One of the big keys is blocking on offense and Patrick Jacobs is the Indians’ key offensive lineman. On defense, Austin will turn in his quarterback duties to play defensive back while Alvin Richardson will go from wide receiver to defensive back. Corey Monceaux goes from tight end on offense to linebacker on defense. Patrick Jacobs will go from offensive lineman to defensive lineman. Oberlin will certainly be a key game for

Coach Bertrand says that Kinder and Basile are rival games that are definitely circled on the Indians 2010 schedule. Hamilton Christian Warriors The green, black and white of the Hamilton Christian Academy Warriors will be looking to shine in the 2010 football season after a rough 2009. The Warriors went 3-7 last season and had a sub 500 2-3 District 4-1A record. Head Football Coach Mike Maggio will take his 32 years of coaching experience and try to improve the Warriors this season. Maggio is entering his 8th season with Hamilton Christian. The Warriors have a total of 14 returning starters on offense and defense combined. Plus, add to the mix 12 seniors on the

squad, and the Warriors are looking for the hearts of the players to be one of the keys to success. Several players will be playing both offense and defense for Coach Maggio and the Warriors. Cameron Meyer will be the starting quarterback for the Warriors but will also play defensive back. Marcos Portin will play running back and linebacker while Josh Van Norman will head up the offensive and defensive tackle position. Caleb McEntire will also play double duty as the Warriors receiver and free safety. Jimmy Beck will play an important roll for the Warriors on special teams as the punter and

field goal kicker. Offensively, Coach Maggio has starting quarterback Cameron Meyer, running backs Justin Griffin, Jaylen Doucette and Marcos Portin. The Warriors wide receiver core will be JJ Myles, Caleb McEntire and Marcos Richard. Hamilton’s offensive line will be key for protection and blocking headed up by Aron Breaux and Josh Van Norman. Hamilton Christian Academy will be looking to improve on the defensive side of the ball. Last season the Warriors gave up 330 total points, 175 of those during district play. Coach Maggio is looking for his players to improve all aspects of the game from last season from scoring more points on offense and not allowing as many points on the defensive side of the ball. Discipline and the

hearts of his players are key, Maggio said to success for the 2010 season. As far as which games on the Warriors’ schedule are important, Coach Maggio says that they are all important. Merryville Panthers The Merryville Panthers are coming off of a sub 500 season. The only reason they fell under the 500 mark was because of their loss in the playoffs. The Panthers went 5-5 in the regular season and were 1-4 in District 4-1A. Even with the 5-5 record the Panthers made it into the playoffs but lost 35-6 to Oak Grove, bouncing them out of the playoffs in the 1st round. Head Coach Mark Delaney has been coaching football now for 19 years and this will be his third year with Merryville. Delaney’s first

order of business is to figure out how to make the defense better. Last season the Panther’s gave up 270 points on defense, allowing 143 of those points during district play. Delaney says that depth is one of the weaknesses of the team. Coach Delaney is looking for key players like linebacker Caleb Branch to step up for his defense and lead them in the right direction. The Panthers will have 10 starters returning on the squad, nine of whom are seniors. Quarterback Austin Moore will head up the Panthers’ offense. The Panthers will also look for offensive output from tight end

Ty Harrington as well as running back Yevin Williams. Center Cody Eaves and guard Jacob McMillian will be the key blockers for the Panthers. The offense last season scored 213 total points, most of them in their wins. They only scored 43 total points in their five regular season losses. Another weakness for the Merryville Panthers last season was good solid open field tackling which Coach Delaney says needs to improve in 2010. The Panthers will be looking to avenge their loss to the rival South Cameron Tarpons from

last season. The Panthers lost 32-8 last season to the Tarpons but they will get them at home this season on October 7. Coach Delaney said the other key game on the Panthers’ schedule is against East Beauregard. The Panthers won that game easily in 2009 36-12 at home, but they will have to travel to East Beau to take them on on their own turf on September 17. Coach Delaney and the Merryville Panthers are looking for better execution on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in 2010. They need to stay healthy, especially

since Merryville has eight players on their roster who are playing both offense and defense. The Panthers look to take it to the next level and improve from the 2009 season, but will need to improve on a few things to move up in the District 4-1A standings and be successful.

Oberlin Tigers

The Oberlin Tigers and Head Football Coach Pat Miller had a big 2009 season. The Tigers had an impressive record of 11-2 overall and went undefeated in District 4-1A at 5-0. The Tigers also had a huge post-season, making it into the 3rd round of the high school football playoffs. The Tigers scored an impressive 116 points in the first two rounds of the playoffs before stumbling in the 3rd round to South Plaquemines, 42-19. Coach Miller enters his third season as the Tigers’ head coach, but takes 20 total years of

experience into the upcoming season. The hurdle for Coach Miller is that he has only four offensive and two defensive starters returning this season. The Tigers will also have key players who will play both sides of the ball. Cedric Skinner will play running back on offense and free safety on defense. Michael Guillory will be at wide receiver and strong safety. Desmond Antoine, Michael Ryder, Kurt Hebert and Lance Frank will be full time on offense and defense. Defensively, the Tigers lost nine starters. Coach Miller hopes that his defensive unit

can mature throughout the season and come together as a team to make them successful. Coach Miller also said that the Tigers had a great summer workout and that one of the strengths of his team will be his offensive line. Senior running back Cedric Skinner should be a leader on offense. If Oberlin has a weakness, it will be overconfidence, Coach Miller said. Last year they had a lot of success, and Miller hopes that it carries over to this season, but it might be difficult because the Tigers have a lot of new players who will have to step up.

District 4-1A

South Cameron Tarpons The South Cameron Tarpons are entering a new era for their football program with the addition of new Head Football Coach James Marcantel. Marcantel comes to the Tarpons with 33 years of coaching experience, including head coaching experience. The red, white, and blue of South Cameron had a pretty decent 2009 season. The Tarpons went 7-4 overall and were 4-1 in District 4-1A play. The Tarpons also made it into the first round of the playoffs, but quickly exited with the loss to St. Fredrick 30-6.

Head coach James Mercantile will enter his first year with the Tarpons and will look for ways for his defense to prevent points. In 2009, the Tarpons gave up 282 points defensively. The offense, however, stepped up and scored 323 points to balance out the difference to lead the Tarpons to their 7-4 2009 season record. Marcantel will only have six returning starters for the Tarpons and only five seniors on the team. South Cameron’s Athletic Director Stevie Barnett says that he is encouraged because they have a number of players coming to try out for football this year. Coach

Marcantel will also have to use several players on both sides of the ball. J.K. Richard will play running back on offense and defensive back on defense. Chan LaLande and Bryce LaBove will both be offensive guards and defensive tackles for the fish. South Cameron’s offense last season was a big producer; they will look for quarterback Andrew Bonsall to be the key guy to keep that ball rolling and put up some points for the Tarpons. Running backs Brennan Norred and Thomas Brown will also be key starters for the Tarpons.

Assistant Coaches Jason Amedee, Stevie Barnett, Edward Cormier, Kerry Morrison, and James Martorona.

Defensively, Coach Marcantel will look for key players like defensive back Clint Miller and linebacker J.K. Richard to lead the defense and hold their opponents to fewer scores. Defensive tackle Chad LaLande will be key in putting the pressure on the opponents QB. South Cameron will open the 2010 season against DeQuincy on September 2. The Tarpons will get their rival Elton at home this season on October 14. South Cameron edged out the Indians in 2009 by the score of 28-26. AD Barnett and Coach Marcantel are looking to improve on both offense and

defense. They also said that the keys to success for the Tarpons in 2010 would be to stay healthy and not to have any injuries to key players. As the South Cameron Tarpons start a new era with their new head football coach James Marcantel, Barnett says the Tarpons are looking to continue the tradition of success at South Cameron High School.
