When It’s Your Kid, It’s Your Choice.

Football

It’s more than just winning or losing. Football is an extremely popular sport, especially on the high school and collegiate levels. Whether your team walks off of the field as the winner or the loser, there are many health, social and psychological advantages that can be gained by participating at any level. It’s a winwin situation if you are willing to work hard, enjoy yourself and take opportunities when they are presented to you. Health and fitness There is no doubt that regular participation in football games and practices leads to fitter and healthier athletes. The Mayo Clinic advises that playing any sports really is a great way for children and adolescents to get involved in health and fitness. If the gym or other exercise activities such as jogging or swimming aren’t your cup of tea, then joining a football team or even playing recreationally with friends is a way to keep fit and healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 75 minutes of vigorous activity every week – it’s easy to get this much in just one practice session. Stress Relief Playing football is a great way to relieve stress. Not only does football give athletes something to take their mind away from things they might be worrying about such as work, school or family, it also causes the body to release chemicals that make you feel happy. These chemicals, called endorphins, are released by the brain when you exercise. They block sensations of pain and increase overall feelings of well-being.

Discipline Football can be an excellent way for people of all ages to develop their level of discipline. As a player, it is expected that you treat your teammates, coaches and the opposition with respect. Competitors need to be motivated to attend practice sessions, play in games and perform at their best. Football can be useful in instilling discipline at any age to those who may not receive it at home or in school. Teamwork Teamwork is vital in football since without it, you will not be successful. Although each individual player has his own role, the whole team must work together as a unit in order to succeed. Being a good team member is an excellent attribute to have at a young age because adult work situations often require you to perform at your best as part of a team. Playing in football games also teaches athletes how to be a humble winner and a gracious loser.

Make the right one.

District 3-5A Barbe • Sam Houston • sulphur

In the largest classification in the state, district 3-5A is quite possibly the toughest district in all of Louisiana. The district boasted seven all-state selections including three from the Barbe Buccaneers. Topping the list of players to watch is tight-end DeSean Smith who made ESPN’s top 150 list. Also Barbe placed sophomore wide receiver Trey Quinn on the list and he will only get better this year. Sulphur will bring back running back and all-district kick returner Brian Walker. Walker scored 12 touchdowns last year and will need to have another good year for the Tors to make a run at the district title. Sam Houston also has a kid who is turning the heads of college recruiters in offensive lineman Austin Fusilier (6’2” 310). Fusilier will

anchor a very solid Bronco offensive line. Every season, teams circle the names of their bitter rival, like Barbe vs. LaGrange, Barbe vs. Sulphur, Sam Houston vs. Westlake, but because of how strong the district is there will be other “must watch” games. Barbe will play in two of these types of game starting in week three against powerhouse Evangel Christian. Then in week seven the Bucs will travel to Carencro, in a game that will most likely decide the district. District 3-5A put four teams in the playoffs last year and sent one to the title game so pretty much on any given Friday, you can watch two dominant teams clash.

Barbe Buccaneers There are always plenty of eyes on the Barbe Buccaneers and they have rightfully earned that spotlight as former coach Jimmy Shaver’s legendary career will be talked about for years to come. When new Head Coach Mike Cutrera took over last season those eyes didn’t go away, in fact they widened, looking to see where a new coach would take them. The fans were not disappointed as Cutrera led the Bucs to a 9-4 record in the toughest district in the biggest class in the state.

He set a very high bar for himself in his first year and going into his second, he will be tested again, playing one of the toughest schedules in the state. Seven of the ten teams on the Bucs schedule this year made the playoffs last season, including 5A state runner-up Carencro. Offensively the Bucs are as good as they have ever been. They will return eight starters this season from a very potent 2011 campaign, a season in which five players garnered post season accolades. LSU commit DeSean Smith

was an all-state selection last season at tight end and is listed on the ESPNU top 150 athletes. Smith will be counted on to control the middle of the field. Fellow all-state selection at wide receiver Trey Quinn, got the selection as a sophomore and his junior year looks even more promising and he also is catching the eyes of major D-I schools. Leading the potent Buc’s offense is junior quarterback Kennon Fontenot. Fontenot played very solid as a sophomore throwing 25 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He took some

The defense is where the concern is this year as the Bucs lost nine starters from last year’s squad. “Those guys were not jut starters, the linebackers had an uncanny ability to find the ball and finish,” said Cutrera. The good news is both returning starters are in the secondary. Last year’s interception leader and senior Callen Smith will look to lead a young group. He will be assisted by fellow senior Austin

Guillory and the tandem will anchor Cutrera’s 3-3-5 defense. The Bucs will be tested every Friday night this fall. They bring a combination of experience, speed and playmaking ability to the table. They will clash with district rival Carenro in week seven that will have district championship ramifications. The Bucs will look to have another strong year and go farther than last season’s quarterfinal exit.

Sam Houston Broncos The Broncos moved up in classification last year and found themselves in a very tough District 3-5A group with the likes of Barbe, Acadiana, Sulphur and Comeaux. This made for a tough road for Head Coach Vaughn Eggleston and his Broncos, but in year two he is looking to build on his team’s 2-8 performance from a year ago.

The good news for the Broncos is that nine returning starters will take the field on offense this year. The strength of the offense will be the line anchored by senior Austin Fusilier and his 6’2”, 310 pound frame. Helping him block and protect are seniors Chris Milanowski and Trent Johnson. Back to run Eggleston’s Pro-I base offense is junior Cliff Reid. He

has shown good patience and will have some playmakers around him this year. Speedster Tyrell Jones and wide receivers Dayton Dugas and Nathan Eggleston are young but should prove useful in the Broncos system. Defensively is where the Broncos will lack experience. Sulphur Tors Last season the Tors finished 5-6 but managed to go 3-3 in district play to sneak into the state playoffs as the 31st seed (out of 32). Although injuries have seemed to have plague this team for two seasons, Sulphur must find a way to hang tough in what is probably the toughest district in 5A.

This season, the biggest concern for Head Coach Harold Fuselier and his staff will be the lack of size on both the offensive and defensive lines. “Our biggest weakness is the size of our lines. They have great potential but they may need some time to gel,” said Fuselier. “We do have a stronger skill set this year and our secondary is deep. We also return a

lot of specialists on special teams and as always, expectations are high.” A major plus for the Tornado offense is they return senior running back and All-district kick returner Brian Walker. Walker ran for 632 yards and 12 touchdowns last season while seeing the majority of the carries. The multiplespread offense Fuselier runs will make

Walker an even bigger threat as he will also catch some balls out of the backfield. The new signal caller this year is junior Seth Bohannen who did see limited snaps last year but he will need to learn quickly since he will be relied on to lead this offense. Defensively, senior Ethan Hyatt is back at linebacker, a major plus considering he was the team’s second leading tackler last year and also had two interceptions. The

only other returning starter on defense is lineman Garrett Coppells who will lead the young line and will be asked to help develop his inexperienced teammates. Sulphur will no doubt be undersized, but even with the injury bug hitting them hard the last couple of seasons, they have still managed to find a way to get into the playoffs.

St. Louis and Washington-Marion shared the 4-4A title last year and you can bet neither one wants to do it again. They will have the opportunity in week six ensure that doesn’t happen, in a game that will likely decide who takes the district. St. Louis will also play a big time non-district game when they travel to perennial 3A powerhouse Notre Dame. LaGrange will play its yearly grudge match against rival Barbe in week one, which always proves to be a great game.

DeRidder Dragons Head Coach Eric Parmley and his staff are looking for a turnaround from a disappointing 3-7 record a year ago. That will not be an easy task as Coach Parmley explains, “It’s going to be a tough season. Three teams in our district went to the playoffs last year and usually whoever makes it out of our district goes deep into the playoffs.”

The Dragons dropped two very close games last year, one to Westlake 22-12 in week five and in week eight to Beau Chene, 18-15. If those two games swing in the Dragons’ favor this year, they could be looking at a respectable 5-5 season. The Dragons will use 12 returning starters, seven on offense and five on defense, to bounce back. That experience will help in

executing Parmley’s Multiple I offense and 4-25 defense. Parmley is looking at last year’s experiences as the strength of his football team. “We have several kids coming back this year with playing experience, so they are already familiar with our system and will help their teammates.” One of the players to watch is Sam Ford, an exciting DB/ATH, who is expected to

The Dragons open up district play on the road at LaGrange in week six, which should be an exciting game. Coach Parmley understands his district is

LaGrange Gators Head Coach Jules Sullen is entering his sixth season as the LaGrange Gator head man. While his 44-35 record isn’t astonishing, he has managed to turn the program around and finished last season in a three way tie for first place with Washington-Marion and St. Louis. The Gators will look to build upon last season and make it further than last year’s first round exit from the playoffs.

The Gators will field seven returning starters when they start off week one against Barbe. Sullen will use the twoheaded monster of Robert LeDay and Tyler Guillory to solidify the backfield. Nick Pitre, the senior who is a three-year starter at wide receiver, will bring a rare combination of size and speed to the Gator attack and will be instrumental in their success this year. Joining Pitre will be a pair of 6’3” playmakers in Fred

Williams and Martell Hawthorne that will give Sullen many weapons to use in his multiple-I offense. Defensively the group is young but very talented. LaGrange will switch this year from a 4-2-5 to an NFL-style 3-4 defense. The strength of the young defense will be a very speedy secondary and leading that group is Deonte Goodley and Markell Thomas. counted on to provide leadership and playmaking for the Gators. After opening the season at home against the Barbe Bucs, the Gators will face Sulphur, Mansfield and Northside before opening district play at home against the DeRidder Dragons. Their season will wrapup at home when the Charging Indians of Washington-Marion pay them a visit in what should be an exciting season finale. When Sullen took over at LaGrange he

put a lot of emphasis on developing the athletes in the middle schools that feed into LaGrange. This strategy looks to be paying off. Although young the Gators will be very athletic and will boast some exciting playmakers. The future is very bright for LaGrange.

St. Louis Saints

Head coach Mike Johns is entering his 11th season at the helm of the St. Louis Saints and has managed to put together some really good teams. Last year’s team went a mere 6-5 but won when it counted, posting a 4-1 mark in district and winning a share of the title. The Saints earned a 17th playoff seed where they a lost a heartbreaker to the number16 seed from Minden, 20-19. He will be tested again this year as he

lost nine starters on both sides of the ball and looks to develop some of his younger players for his team to make another run at a title. According to the other coaches in the district, St. Louis will still be one of the most fundamentally sound teams in the state. Offensively St. Louis will look for more balance this year as they transition from a single back look to a wing-t offense. Senior quarterback J.P. Crawford shared snaps

last year but will be the lone signal caller this year. Because of his experience and leadership he will be asked to play a very important role and will be a key to this team’s success. The only other offensive starter with experience is tight end David Pigno, who will also play a vital role in the offense. The defense is where most of the concern lies as the Saints lost their entire linebacking core, which provided

Washington-Marion Charging Indians It has only taken Freddie Harrison two seasons to turn things around at Washington-Marion. Last season his Charging Indians finished 8-4 and shared the district 4-4A title with St. Louis and LaGrange. They made it to the second round of the playoffs before falling to powerhouse Lutcher. Washington-Marion was almost unanimously picked to win the district this year which is a good kind of

pressure his squad isn’t used to. Harrison will get back six starters from last year’s team and none bigger than senior signal caller and LSU commit Melvin Jones. Last season Jones was named to the all-district and all-state teams as well as being named the district 4-4A MVP. The 6’3” 260 pound quarterback will have two wide outs with blazing speed to throw to in Demond Delahoussaye and Devin Alfred. Giving Jones the time he needs to throw will

be three experienced and talented lineman who are on average 6’1” and 270 pounds. Reginald Braxton, Greg Lewis and Leon Guillory have turned the heads of college recruiters at Houston, North Texas and Grambling amongst others and will provide not only blocking for Jones, but also running lanes for newcomer Rawlincy Guillory, the feature back of Harrison’s one-back set. In addition to being a stand out quarterback, Jones will also play iron man

Washington-Marion has several players who can play football at the next level and enough experience to know how to use it. The Other Team on the Field Another high school football season is upon us and there is one group that always seems to get overlooked and taken for granted. This team wears no helmets or protective pads, takes no snaps from under center and has never won a game. They are the men and women in stripes...the REFEREES! Without the officiating crew, the fans would have nobody to boo, but more importantly, without them games could not be played. The Southwest Louisiana Football Officials Association serves middle schools and high schools in Calcasieu, Cameron, Jeff Davis, Allen, Beauregard, Vernon and Evangeline Parishes, and is always looking for men and women interested in officiating. The association holds weekly meetings on Monday nights in Westlake to discuss the rules of the game, analyze game film and discuss game situations “This is a great way to get involved in the sport of football, it is a great opportunity for former players and coaches to remain a part of the game they love”, says Eric Zartler who is entering his 13th year with the association. Officiating is more than just enforcing rules it is a very rewarding experience.” He says the people you get to meet and work with are a great bunch. “It’s a brotherhood, I have met some of my best friends through officiating”, adds Zartler. If you are at least 18 years old and think you have what it takes to wear the stripes, contact Brian Myers at dome98@netcommander.com or call (337) 304-2855 to learn how you can join the team.

District 4-3A Iowa • Jennings • South Beauregard • Westlake

District 4-3A produced two playoff teams last season, district champion Jennings and runner-up Westlake. Jennings finished with an 8-2 record and made it to the quarterfinals where they lost a heartbreaker to Marksville by one point. The Bulldogs have 12 starters and a senior class of 24 players returning, making them the early favorite to repeat again as district champs. Westlake advanced to the second round of the playoffs before falling to Amite, 22-13. The Rams will bring back all five offensive lineman and major Division-I recruit Jacory Washington to challenge the Bulldogs again for the district crown. South Beauregard will start the Dwight Hudler-era after finishing 4-6 last season. Hudler brings with him several years of playing and coaching experience and learned from legendary coach Max Calderera. Sean Richard and his Iowa Yellow Jackets will also look to rebound from a disappointing 4-6 record. He will do so with a very experienced defense, returning eight starters to execute his NFL-style 3-4 defense.

The Rams have arguably the best player in the entire 3A class in Jacory Washington, but there is a lot more talent in this district. Jennings has a pair of receivers that measure 6’2” 190 and can make plays all day long. Malik Williams and Brance White will both need to have solid seasons to ensure a successful season for the Bulldogs. Joe Ledet will be on double duty for South Beauregard this season and they will need his best on both sides of the ball. The two-way star will handle the ground game for the Knights as well as anchor their secondary. Returning all-district quarterback Austin Theriot will lead the Iowa Yellow Jackets this season. The senior will be looked upon to have another solid year to help Iowa make a run at a district title. Look for a lot of tough, exciting games to come out this distric t. Ever y Friday night looks to be a battle for the distric t crown.

District 4-3A

Iowa Yellow Jackets Sean Richard finished his second season at Iowa with a 4-6 record and went winless in district. This year he will look to rebound from that mark and will rely on his defense to do so. The strength of the Yellow Jacket team will be the defense. Richard will have eight returning starters to

execute his new 3-4 defense. He feels his personnel fits that system better. Iowa returns all three defensive lineman Logan Autin, Pepper Bourque and big Tremel Alfred (6’2” 280). Behind them, three of the four linebackers are coming back including two seniors Devon Thomas and Cody Burgess. The secondary is where the inexperience will

be as all three newcomers will be there. All three are also seniors making for a shorter learning curve. Offensively Richard only brings back three players, but senior quarterback Austin Theroit is a big plus. Theroit was an all-district selection a year ago and will be relied on to carry a big load if the Yellow Jackets are to have success. Wide

reciever Tanner Buller is also back and will give Theroit a good target to throw to. Teams in district 4-3A should keep their eye on split-back Jarel Picquet. Picquet started as a freshman and showed lots of promise. He will be back and better as a sophomore and will wreak havoc in the district for three more years. Iowa will play a couple of 2A schools in the first three weeks of the season which will give them an opportunity to get off to a good start. They will then open

Jennings Bulldogs Optimism is high in Jennings this year, as it should be. The Bulldogs went 8-2 last year and 4-1 in district, and they lost those two games by a combined seven points. Head Coach Rusty Phelps is entering his 18th season as the head man at Jennings and understands that this team must make its own way. Coach Phelps also has experience coming back on the field. He has 12 returning starters, six on offense and six on

defense. The Bulldogs also return a total of 24 seniors, 10 of which have seen significant playing time since their sophomore year. Four starters are returning to the offensive line, all seniors, which coach Phelps views as a huge strength. “All four of our running backs we are going to use have no varsity snaps, so to have an experienced o-line to open up holes is key,” said Phelps. Jennings did lose its all-state tight end from a year ago, which puts even more importance on the offensive line.

Charlie Mott, Brian Wilridge, LeMontay Mouton, and Branon LaBouf will make up the running back by committee, all of whom have similar skill sets and are playmakers. Also, Coach Phelps has two very good players at wide receiver, Malik Williams and Brance White, who both measure around 6’2” and 190 pounds. “Our goal is to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers and our two receivers are at the top of the list,” said Phelps. Getting them the ball will be capable quarterbacks Jaylon

District 4-3A

South Beauregard Knights Dwight Hudler will begin his head coaching career this season for the Knights and will bring with him a strong resume, including five seasons as an assistant with LaGrange and four more under long-time Westlake coach Max Caldarera. He also played center for the Louisiana Swashbucklers and will draw on all his experience to make his first season a good one. He comes to a

program that last season missed the playoffs for the first time in four years and is looking to get the Knights back to their winning ways. Last season’s 4-6 record resulted in part by the school moving up in classification to 3A due to higher enrollment. District 4-3A just so happens to be one of the toughest districts in the state, usually putting in multiple playoff teams.

Offensively Zack Brady will return as the signal caller for the Knights, bringing with him much needed leadership as the offense will switch from a pro-set to a more one-back set. Taking care of the running game will be Joe Ledet who will likely see the majority of the carries and will need to have a solid season to ensure a balanced attack. Paving the way for Ledet will be returning starters Austin LeBleu and Mike Guidry who will

anchor a line that has good size and explosiveness. On the defensive side of the ball Hudler will transition from the 4-2-5 that Knight fans are used to seeing, into the 3-4. The Knights will use experience to help with this move. Ledet will also anchor the secondary with fellow two-way player Pryce Fontenot, who will double as a wide receiver. Solid linebackers are key in a 3-4 scheme and the Knights are bringing back two junior

There will be a lot of changes this year when the Knights take the field in week one at home against DeQuincy with a new coach, new philosophy and new formations; but with 10 returning starters and Hudler‘s past experiences, look for South Beauregard to begin to turn things around in the coming years.

Westlake Rams

Replacing a legend is never easy but with long-time Head Coach Max Caldarera hanging up the whistle after last season, that’s exactly what new Head Coach Shawn Demeritt is facing. Demeritt might not have the 210 wins that Caldarera left with, but he has proven himself to be a standout coach. He brings with him a 31-12 record he amassed at district 4-3A rival South Beauregard over the last four seasons. He is inheriting a 7-5 team that made it to the second round of the

playoffs last year and is looking forward to the return of several solid, returning starters that have a great skill set and speed to burn. The biggest strength for the Rams will be the offensive line with all five starters from last year returning. This set-up will give talented tailback Latrell Martin many lanes to run through to solidify the ground game. If opposing defenses try to stack the box, the Rams will go to Jacory Washington who has made a name for himself and is finding himself on

9/14/2012 Sam Houston

the radars of schools like LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M and Arkansas, all of which are recruiting the speedy wideout. On the other side, Handon Etienne will keep defenses honest with his pure blazing speed. The Rams have usually been a smash mouth, power offense but Demeritt can’t help but be excited about the skill set of his team. He will look to spread things out in a more wide open attack to light up the scoreboard. The Rams will use a 4-2-5 set this year defensively. Anchoring the defense is

Head Coach

two-way starter Martin who will also play tailback. Westlake did lose quite a bit of experience on defense but will make up for it with blinding speed. The two at the top of this list are Anthony Cole and Nick Latour, who will look to be counted on heavily in a solid secondary. Dylan Spikes will add some much needed experience on the defensive line as the only returning starter. Demeritt’s Rams will need to use all of this speed to hit the ground running as they will have a tough non-district

They will begin district play in week six when his team travels to South Beauregard, to take on his former team, in front of what will surely be a lively crowd. The Rams will look to make a run at a district title and go farther than their second round playoff appearance a year ago.

Leesville Wampus Cats If you look only at the overall record, the 2011, 4-6 Leesville Wampus Cats would have had a disappointing season. However, all four of their wins came when it mattered, in district. The Wampus Cats finished in second place in the district with a 4-1 record under first year Head Coach Jimmie Adams. Adams looks to improve on his non-district record and

make the playoffs this year. Leesville will return only four starters, two on offense and two on defense, but will field a team of 16 seniors. The strength of this offense will be the line, boasting both returning starters. Senior tackle Jamal Harrell, 6’4” and 275 pounds, will anchor the line with fellow senior, center Trey Bennett. Senior Devail Lewis will man the backfield and hopes to give

Leesville a consistent ground game. Coach Adams feels one of the strengths of his offense is that they are very balanced with no superstars, but a group that has a team-first mentality. Defensively, senior linebacker Roger Laufalemana will be a player to watch. Helping Laufalemana set Adam’s 30 stack defense will be fellow senior and returning starter Kaplan Rolon. The two

9/14/2012 pineville linebackers will be expected to carry a heavy load this season and will get help from a very solid secondary. Last season Leesville opened up against three 5A schools in the first four weeks, losing all three games. This year is no different as the Wampus Cats will face the DeRidder Dragons and the Broncos of Sam Houston in their first two weeks of play. This year though, Adams feels like his team is more prepared for the tough stretch and

9/21/2012 sulphur

looks to change that 0-3 mark. The Wampus Cats will open up district play in week six when they host Bolton and will finish the season on the road against Tioga.

District 4-2A dequincy • east beauregard • kinder • lake arthur welsh • pickering • rosepine • vinton

Welcome to the largest district in the state in any classification; it’s one of the toughest as well. This group sent half of its eight teams to the playoffs last season with Kinder, Welsh, Lake Arthur and DeQuincy all making it into the post-season. Kinder managed to make it to the quarterfinals before bowing to eventual state champs John Curtis. There are so many good teams and coaches in this district that it is tough to see a pre-season favorite to win the district title. Kinder will get the early nod as they went undefeated in district play last season and will return 16 starters this season, ten of which will be on defense. Welsh will be looking to avenge last season’s only district loss when they meet in week four to open district play. Lake Arthur has been the model of consistency, winning at least seven games the last three seasons, and will look to build on that foundation this year. DeQuincy’s 6-5 record last year doesn’t do them justice as they peaked late in the season to make to the second round of the playoffs. Coach Flanagan will try to have his Tigers off to a better start and look to get a better playoff seeding this year.

There are a plethora of talented players in this district. Kinder’s Marshall Harmon will be the featured back in Coach Wainwright’s offense getting between 30-40 touches per game. Returning all-district wide reciever Taylor McFarlin will be Lake Arthur’s best playmaker and will be an early favorite to make the list again. Welsh has two returning alldistrict players including, RB/LB Tray Goodwin and WB/DE William Heinen. This tandem will be elusive on offense and create havoc on defense. If Welsh is able to finish at the top of this district, these two young men will be a big reason why. DeQuincy’s Jaleel Bridges is one of the most exciting athletes in the district as well as an all-district selection from a year ago. Bridges will be a three-year starter and should make an even bigger name for himself in an already crowded group. Daveon Banks was only a sophomore last year when he led the Red Devils in tackles. Now back for his junior year, he will be one of the few guys able to stop all the offensive fire power this district showcases.

DeQuincy Tigers In his first season as head coach at DeQuincy High, Carl Flanagan led his team to a 6-5 record and to the second round of the state playoffs. Flanagan, a 35 year veteran of the coaching profession, brings with him a wealth of knowledge and will look to build on last year’s success. The Tigers will return 11 starters from last season’s playoff team, six on offense and five on defense. Flanagan will use three-year

starting quarterback and all-district selection Jaleel Bridges to run his multiple-I offense. “It is always good when you have that kind of leadership to work with,” said Flanagan. Bridges will not be short of options as senior wide receivers Brandon Brown and Kaleb Hollie will be more than adequate targets. Junior Elijah Hollie, who brings amazing speed and excellent hands, will be another option for Bridges. Tailback Lester Johnson will be the starter for the Tigers but there will

9/14/2012

be at least three other running backs sharing time in the backfield. On the defensive side of the ball, Flanagan will change things up from time to time working, out of a 4-3 and 50-base defense. They will use either defense depending on the opponent. Lacking size throughout the defense, the Tigers will rely heavily on their quickness and technique to stop opposing offenses. East Beauregard Trojans Randy Price brought 31 years of coaching experience with him last year to East Beauregard. The Trojans finished with a 3-7 overall record and only managed one win in district. In his second season Price will look to change some things up and improve on last year’s results. Price feels the biggest strength for his team is that he will not start any two-way players, even though some players will see time on both sides of the ball. He

thinks that will play a huge role in the fourth quarter, as his team will have more left in the tank. On the offense, the Trojans will be very young, starting four freshman and two sophomores. With all that youth, junior quarterback Josh Fletcher will be called upon to carry an even bigger load in Price’s wing-T offense. Senior left guard Caleb LaBorde will anchor the Trojan line in the hopes of creating a more explosive offense.

Defensively, East Beauregard will return five defensive starters including senior defensive end Brandon Wyat and senior defensive back Justin Bailey. Both will lead a much improved defense who will look to give their offense more opportunities. “Our defense will be improved this year. They have looked good this summer,” said Price. The Trojans play in the largest district in the state of any classification. In addition to the size of the district, the

9/13/2012 merryville talent is there too. Four teams from the district made the playoffs last year and the Trojans know they must be prepared every week. “To compete in this league you must play great football every Friday night to have a chance at the title,” Price said. In week one the Trojans will travel to South Cameron to take on the Tarpons. They will open district play on the road against the DeQuincy Tigers and are fortunate to have an alternating pattern of home/away for district play. They will

Kinder Yellow Jackets The Kinder Yellow Jackets put together an impressive season a year ago, finishing 9-1 and undefeated in district play. The season got off to a rough start, losing to 1A Elton by five points before the Yellow Jackets reeled off nine straight convincing wins. Kinder entered the state playoffs as a nine seed and made it all the way to the quarterfinals, losing to eventual state champion John Curtis. Head coach Jeff Wainwright,

entering his 10th season, has a lot to look forward to with 16 returning starters, including 10 on the defensive side of the ball. Even though he lost two all-state linebackers in Seth Langley and Blake Trahan, he believes he has players that can step in and get the job done. His defensive line will be the strength of the 4-3 defense with two three-year starters anchoring the line, defensive end Stone LeBouf and defensive tackle Craylon Jones. “We must play strong defense this year,” said

Wainwright. “We are putting one of the fastest defenses we’ve ever had on the field and will rely on them to produce.” On the offensive side of the ball, Coach Wainwright has three running backs in his flexbone-base offense. Marshall Harmon will lead the group. According to Coach Wainwright, he can carry the ball 30 to 40 times a game. The Yellow Jackets will also feature RB/safety DeVon Thompson, who is a three-year starter at safety and will be a vital part of the running game.

first round, a game that went into overtime. The second was a seven-point win against Isidore Newman, in which a late interception sealed the win for Kinder. Coach Wainwright knows his district is very tough. “Our district could go through Lake Arthur, Welsh or Dequincy, they are all tough teams.” He went on to say, “If we play the way we are capable of every week we can compete for the district title and make a run in the playoffs.”

Wainwright believes any one of his three backs can score from anywhere on the field at any time. The strength of this team, according to Wainwright, is its mentality. “We have a lot of kids who are mentally tough. You will see a team that doesn’t break under pressure and they are also a very athletic team.” The Yellow Jackets’ goal is to go farther this year in the playoffs than last year with this experienced, battle-tested team. caller for the Tigers. This will be Guidry’s second season as the starter. Running back Colby Benoit is the Tigers feature back and looks to solidify the run game. Returning all-district receiver Taylor McFarlain is the team’s best playmaker and Coach Lavergne looks to put the ball in his hands as much as possible. The offensive line returns just one starter, senior Drew Gaspard. Lavergne is counting on Gaspard to anchor the line and provide leadership to the incoming starters.

In total the Tigers will start 15 seniors and eight two-way players. This is a concern for Lavergne who has stressed conditioning this off-season. “This spring we focused on conditioning to ensure we can play all four quarters with the amount of two-way players we have,” said Lavergne. The coaching staff feels they have capable back-ups to provide minutes if needed. Lavergne’s team needs to stay healthy to maximize all of his team’s the experience.

Head Coach

Another main focus this year for Lavergne’s staff has been the defense. Last year they played well most of the time but were plagued by inconsistency. Coach Lavergne explains, “We played very good defense at times but had major breakdowns at times. We are determined to play at a higher and more consistent level this year.” Lake Arthur went 4-3 in district last year and will look to build on that total this season. Pickering Red Devils Pickering had a rough season last year, finishing 1-9 overall and 1-6 in district, but Head Coach Lane Cook is leaning on his team’s experience to make his third season a winning one. Pickering’s strong suit this year will unquestionably be on the defensive side of the ball. The Red Devils are returning eight starters from last season, including four seniors, to

operate its 4-3 defense. Leading the way for Pickering is junior linebacker Daveon Banks. Banks was the leading tackler last year and looks to increase his total this season. The defensive line looks to be the strength of the defense with returning starters, defensive end Marlon Powe and defensive tackle Brad Clibry. Offensively the Red Devils will return four starters, all seniors. Running back Josh Langston

was the team’s rushing leader a year ago and finished with 860 yards and four touchdowns. Langston should improve on that mark with a solid offensive line opening the holes. In addition to his duties on the defensive line, Clibry will also hold down the offensive tackle position and will be joined by fellow senior and returning starter Joe Cummings at guard. Marquez Williams will return as the team’s starting tight end and help

Rosepine Eagles Head Coach Danny Smith is entering his second season as head coach at Rosepine. He was an assistant there for three years before being promoted last season. His team went 4-6 last season but is looking to turn things around this year. Smith’s offense will be the key to his team’s success. They are bringing back eight returning starters on that side of the ball. The Eagles signal caller will be senior

quarterback Blake Hinson. Hinson was voted second team all-district last year and will have plenty of protection this year with four returning starters on the offensive line, led by senior Alex Harmon, who was selected to the all-district team a year ago. Rosepine will also bring back its starting tight end which will bolster the blocking even more. The Eagles will use that experience to run their multiple-I formation.

9/14/2012 deridder

The defense, although it is returning five defensive starters, needs to improve. One of the major concerns for Coach Smith’s staff is they return no one to the defensive line. Getting penetration in the backfield is a high priority for any coach and with little experience there, the Eagles will look to their very talented veteran secondary. Four of Rosepine’s five returning starters are in the secondary; strong safety Colton Johnson, safety Stuart

Vinton Lions Tarius Davis’s first season as Vinton’s head coach was a rough one. The Lions finished at 3-7 and only won one district game, a 42-20 thumping of East Beauregard. This year will prove just as tough as Davis lost 14 seniors from last year’s squad. Vinton will return six starters from last season, three on offense and three on defense. The Lions do have some positives to work

with. Second team all-district selections D.J. Reed (RB/SS) and Blake Trahan (DT/OL) will be players to watch. Also Vinton has an outstanding player in Anferney Dickenson who will see playing time at wide reciever, defensive back and quarterback. Coach Davis wants to use Dickenson to create match-up problems for opposing defenses in his multiple-I set.

The defensive side of the ball is where the most concern lies. Last year’s squad gave up twenty or more points eight times and thirty or more points four times. “There will be growing pains on both sides of the ball but hopefully they won’t last long,” said Davis. One thing Davis and his staff are doing to shorten the growing pains is stressing

Head Coach

Davis knows this season will be an uphill battle but is also relying on his coaching staff to help develop his young players and is looking forward to what the future has in store for his Lions. He explained, “Me being a young coach and having a young team can be a good thing. We can grow together with this group and lay a solid foundation for future successful teams.”

Last season started well for the Lions who traveled to Oberlin and won a tight 12-6 contest. They then traveled to South Cameron and won 40-0. After that the Lions would only manage one more win the rest of the way. This season they open with the same two teams except this time they will play at home.

Welsh Greyhounds

Robbie Gates sixth season as the head coach at Welsh was a successful one as the Greyhounds finished 8-2 overall and 6-1 in district and then advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. The Greyhounds will have 10 returning starters coming back this season, five on offense and five on defense. Three of the five returning players on offense will be at the skill positions,

including second team all-district wide receiver Caleb Hayes, who will make the move to quarterback this year. Helping Hayes run his coach’s multiple offense is senior running back Tray Goodwin, splitend Sean LeJeaux and wing back William Heinen. “We lost some speed from last year but we will be much more powerful this year,” said Gates. Defensively the Greyhounds have two all-district senior returning starters,

linebacker Goodwin who also serves as the team running back and defensive end/wing back Heinen. Both were also All Southwest Louisiana small school selections. Welsh did take a hit on defense by losing two lineman and four in the secondary. Depth will be a concern for coach Gates and his staff. The Greyhounds will mostly play iron man football until some of the younger players can develop and get

School is back in session and nothing says fall like the Friday night lights of high school football. It’s hard to think back to your high school days without conjuring up memories of the sights, sounds and smells of attending a football game to cheer on your school. It’s just part of a great American tradition. A certain song, the festivities of Homecoming Week, game day pep rallies, post-game dances and much more are a small part of what makes the high school years some of the best of your life. High school football is about more than just the coaches and players. It is an opportunity for the entire student body and community to rally together for one common purpose. Some students cheer their team on from the sidelines as cheerleaders while many others still remember yelling out their favorite chants from the stands. Members of the band, color guard and dance line are given their opportunity to shine under the bright lights during halftime performances and, at some local schools, even the drama club gets involved with the production of creative game day previews read over the intercom for all students.

District 5-1A

basile • Elton • hamilton christian • merryville • oberlin • south cameron In the 1A classification, this district is about as tough as it gets. The proof lies in three teams it sent to the state playoffs a year ago. Basile, Oberlin and Elton finished in a three-way tie for the district crown and all saw post-season action with Elton being the only one advancing out of the first-round. They went on to lose in the regional round to Central Catholic. These three teams will be neck and neck again this year and as any good drama would have it, the end will be the best part. Basile will get the slight advantage as they will finish the last two weeks at home with a week nine matchup against Oberlin and a week ten finale against Elton. Oberlin and Elton will face off in week eight as a prequel to a crazy last two weeks in district 5-1A. This district is littered with talent and post-season awards will be a tough decision for those in charge of sorting out the stats. First on these lists has to be Elton’s Micah Lavan. Lavan

was the district 5-1A Offensive MVP last year. He will be the focus of opposing defenses but with his remarkable talent level, Lavan should again be the premier player in this district. Basile’s Trenton Pelloquin already has a post-season honor as he was named to the all-district team last year. The wide receiver/ quarterback will line up at multiple positions but will always be a threat. South Cameron is loaded with juniors this season and most of whom played as sophomores. Leading this up and coming group is quarterback Andrew Bonsall. Bonsall will display leadership to go along with his talent and the Tarpons should improve on last year’s 1-9 record. Oberlin will bring back a pair of returning all-district players in seniors Lance Frank and Hunter Ardoin. Ardoin is expected to anchor a very solid offensive line for the Tigers.

Play it Safe this Season Stay hydrated, stay healthy. Before the first whistle is blown or the first ball is snapped, the biggest threat of injury may lurk on the practice field. Athletes are especially susceptible to heat-related injuries, such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Safety Council of Southwest Louisiana urges all area athletes and coaches to play it safe with these tips at practice and during the game:

• Drink plenty of water and sports drinks. Avoid caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee and cola, as these can lead to dehydration.

• Wear light-colored, lightweight, tightly-woven and loose-fitting clothing. • Choose Practice Times Wisely: Schedule vigorous practice sessions for cooler times of the day. • Take frequent water breaks and allow athletes to “wet down” or mist themselves with a spray bottle to avoid becoming overheated.

• Allow time for a proper warm-up and cool-down at each practice session. For more safety and injury prevention tips, call the Safety Council at (337) 436-3354 or visit www.safetycouncilswla.org. 64 www.thriveswla.com

Basile Bearcats

The Basile Bearcats and their fans have high hopes for this season. In addition to the Bearcats finishing with a 7-3 overall record last season and 4-1 in district, they also have 16 returning starters. Their goal is to improve on last year’s record and made a run deep into the playoffs. The strength of this team will undoubtedly be the experience they have

returning. They will have eight starters returning on both offense and defense, allowing for improvement on both sides of the ball and creating a nightmare for opposing teams. Although they have a plethora of talent coming back, Basile does not have a lot of depth so Coach Bertrand and his staff are working very hard to get their back-ups as many reps as possible in case of an injury.

Offensively Trenton Pelloquin (WR/QB) is a returning all-district selection and should provide lots of highlight material. Joining him is fellow all-district selection Tendrick Ceaser who will be the focus of Bertrand’s run first Pro-I formation. Bertrand explains his philosophy, “We want to run the ball first and control the clock but we can throw the football when we need to and be successful doing so.”

Head Coach

Defensively they are solid across the board, but Kalib McGee will anchor this dynamic unit and make sure everyone executes Bertrand’s, 4-2-5 defense correctly. McGee is a returning all-district selection and led the team in tackles a year ago with 136. Even though all the “experts” have Basile as a favorite to win the district, Coach Bertrand has been preaching consistency. He explains, “Every play, every rep needs to be as perfect as possible. If we do then Friday nights will be

Elton Indians

Most new head coaches come and look to rebuild a program but Elton’s new Head Coach Doyle Carter inherited a team that went 9-1 last season and went to the second round of the state playoffs. Carter is looking to build on last season’s success. The Indians will return 11 starters to help repeat last year’s incredible performance. The most important of those returning is senior running back Micah Lavan. Lavan was

last year’s district 5-1A offensive MVP and will again be featured in Carter’s single-I offense. For Elton to make another run at a district title, Lavan will need to have another standout season. On defense Coach Carter will rely heavily on long time Defensive Coordinator Chad LaFleur to develop and strengthen an already solid unit. The defense will try to avoid the big play and force offense’s to drive the entire length of the field.

9/14/2012 delcambre

Carter’s goal is to have no two-way players but says he will go to iron man football if need be. He also has two keys that he thinks will make this team successful. “We have to limit turnovers. These teams in our district are too good for us to give them more chances to score.” He added, “We also must win the time of possession battle and keep our defense off the field.” There is no doubt that the Elton Indians will want to avenge their only loss of last

Hamilton Christian Warriors Hamilton Christian Academy finished a disappointing 2-8 a year ago but sometimes things are not always as they seem. From December 2010 to August 2011 the Warriors did not have a head football coach. There was no off-season workout program, no spring practice and no two-a-day practice in the summer. Basically 17 kids on the roster, yes 17, practiced for a few weeks before the season and played their hearts out. Of the eight games they lost, they were

still in all but three at halftime. A lack of conditioning would haunt them in the second half though. In steps new Head Coach Reggie Nelson, the former McNeese assistant coach, who is looking to begin developing his team immediately. The Warriors have 14 returning starters, eight on offense and six on defense, giving Nelson some experience to work with. He explained, “We have some really good players on this team, they just haven’t been developed.

Our coaching staff will look to set this team up for success this year as well as develop our young kids to ensure sustained success.” On offense, junior quarterback Eric Parker will lead Hamilton Christian in Nelson’s multiple offense. Senior tailback and tight-end, Jalen Doucet will be looked upon to provide leadership as well as yards. The Warriors will look to be a balanced attack and not feature one person in an effort to keep opposing

Head Coach

defenses off-balance. Defensively, Nelson will have the Warriors in a 4-2-5 alignment and will look to senior defensive end/defensive tackle Isiah Williams (6’3” 260) to anchor a line that will try to push the pocket and create pressure. Fellow senior Seth Edwards will lead the speedy secondary. They will be looking to create as many turnovers as possible while not giving up the big play. One major concern for Nelson is his special teams. Losing both his punter and

kicker he will look to fill those shoes and keep the field position battle in his favor. The biggest strength according to Coach Nelson is his experience and speed. He feels his team is very raw and can learn quickly but knows it will be an uphill battle. “Everyone is counting us out and that’s okay,” said Nelson. “We will surprise some people this year with how we play. We are building a good foundation for years to come.”

Merryville Panthers Gordy Glaser’s first season as head coach last year didn’t get off to the start he wanted as his team finished 3-7 overall and 2-4 in district. Glaser hopes his second year at the helm in Merryville will produce better results. The Panthers only have six starters returning from last season, three on offense and three on defense. While Glaser says the lack of experience is

definitely a concern for him and his staff, he also thinks the strength of his team is their mentality. “Our kids have had great attitudes all summer and want to learn and get better. As a coaching staff you can’t ask for more than that,” said Glaser. Offensively Merryville will run a split-back formation and a 5-3 on the defensive side. The Panthers will have two returning seniors that

will be looked upon to carry a heavy load. Nick Ardoin is a running back/ linebacker and Brent Joshlin will anchor the offensive and defensive line. Glaser was complimentary of his defense saying they still need to get better but is pleased with the consistency they showed a season ago. Coach Glaser is looking to control the ball and tempo of the game. “We need to control the time of possession

We cannot give up big plays.” If the Panthers can achieve that goal then the future looks bright for them. In Merryville’s three wins last season they gave up a combined 12 points to opposing teams, including a shutout in week 10 to South Cameron. Glaser and his team realize that it

Oberlin Tigers Long time Oberlin assistant coach Ronnie Simmons will begin his first season ever as a head coach this year for the Tigers and is inheriting a team that finished in a three way tie for first place in district last year. The Tigers went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs. Simmons will have lots of experience to work with, as the Tigers return 15 starters from last year’s team, eight on offense and seven on

defense. Simmons see’s his teams experience as its biggest strength, but also will work hard with his staff to develop the younger players to create depth. Offensively Oberlin will have returning starters at all the skill positions led by senior quarterback Mark Fontenot. Fontenot will have lots of options to work with starting with returning all-district senior Lance Frank. Anchoring the under-sized but experienced offensive line will be returning all-district

player, Hunter Ardoin at center. Defensively Oberlin will look a little different this year as they switch from a 4-2-5 defense to a 4-3 defense. “I think our personnel fits the 4-3 better so we installed it and are working very hard to get our kids used to the switch,” said Simmons. The Tigers were a very solid and consistent group last season only giving up 15 points or more four times, all of them losses. With seven returning starters they should improve on that mark and will

force offenses to make long drives to score points. The only weakness Coach Simmons sees is they are undersized on both lines but as most coaches will tell you technique beats size any day of the week. If the Tiger lineman can hold their own, then Oberlin will be poised to make a run at a district title and deep into the playoffs. The Tigers will get their season started at home with a match-up against Sacred Heart. They will open district play in week six again

South Cameron Tarpons Mark Delany will take over this year as the head coach at South Cameron and brings with him 21 years of coaching experience. He will look to turn things around from last year’s 1-9 record. Even though last year was tough, there is good news for Delany. He will have 17 returning starters at his disposal, nine on offense and eight on defense. Experience will undoubtedly be the biggest strength

for the Tarpons. Delany will stay with last year’s wing-T offense but will also line up in multiple sets. Not only is there experience coming back, but also talent. Junior Andrew Bonsall will enter his second season as the Tarpon signal caller. The 6’1” quarterback will have several weapons to work with. Senior split-end Jason Theriot will join with a pair of junior running backs, Adam Broussard and Corbet Dupont, to

solidify a ground game that should be much improved from last year. Defensively, the line will be the biggest question mark as the only three players that are not returning starters are on the defensive line. Senior Cory Miller will look to anchor the line and help develop his young counterparts. The linebackers and secondary in Delany’s 4-2-5 defense will be stellar. The best news for Tarpon fans is that

There are only six senior starters this year which means in 2013 there will be another 16 returning starters most of which will be entering their third year as starters. This experienced group of Tarpons will welcome the Trojans of East Beauregard
