accident several years ago. He knew all too well how it felt to be controlled by addiction and how this often held him prisoner. In spite of that, he would dedicate time to care for others. Every month, Paul came faithfully to The Brock Mission to make a difference in the lives of homeless men. He had done this for almost 5 years. Some of the men receiving haircuts looked like completely new people and they would leave with a big smile, always asking when he would return for their next trim. He gave them increased self-esteem and often a more positive attitude towards life. Paul always left the mission with a huge sense of satisfaction.

Friendships that Last Forever Dear Friends:

Isn’t it amazing how time passes by so

quickly? It just seems like yesterday that I was writing my summer newsletter and now we are entering into the fall season again! A lot has happened in the Street Hope Peterborough ministry over the past few months. It has been an exciting summer of ministering to needy people in our community. There have been some challenges but Jesus continues to be faithful in all of His great mercy as He guides and directs this ministry forward.

One of the most exciting aspects of

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35

Paul was the type of man who wanted to please

God with what he did, by helping others. He this ministry is seeing relationships develop with people we are serving. wanted his relationship with Christ to be real During the time I have been in Peterborough I have had the pleasure of but, because he had personal struggles, would forming lasting friendships with many people. I praise Jesus for the way not take the step of baptism as he felt he was not He continues to build upon the foundations of these relationships that are investments for eternity. This is what Jesus has done for us! He has made an eternal investment in our lives through an eternal covenant He established with our heavenly Father on our behalf. Hebrews 9:15 says “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.”

Jesus has come to give us not only a new life, but eternal freedom from

the bondage and pain of sin! Our relationship with Jesus gives us a new freedom to live a victorious life by His grace and through His sacrifice on the cross for our sins.

I’d like to share a story of hope and freedom. Paul is one man who I had

the privilege of building a very meaningful friendship with since 2001. You may have read about him in an earlier newsletter. Paul had a heart of mercy and compassion for people. He was drawn to helping the elderly, folks struggling with mental illness, the disabled, homeless and individuals with hurt in their lives. He wanted to make a difference and help people feel like their lives were important. Paul identified with the pain of others because he himself dealt with overwhelming pain every day after a car

willing to fully surrender to Jesus. I will never forget the great conversation I had with Paul in May about his change of heart. He told me that he would be baptised in July. He was so excited that he had made the decision to make a public confession of his faith and had a wholehearted desire to follow Jesus. Paul spoke about his baptism for weeks after it took place. In mid July I assisted Paul in moving to a new apartment and he was so happy in his new home.

Paul was just getting settled into his new spiritual life and home when Jesus decided to take Paul with Him to his new eternal home. We often do not understand the way that God works, but I am so thankful to God that He has our lives in His hands. What a pleasure it was to listen to Paul’s confession of faith during his baptism service that took place just weeks before his death. Paul is now free of the trials and hardships he experienced in this world. He is missed by so many people who he reached out to with a simple haircut. I love the message that Jesus proclaims in John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” The freedom Jesus offers to all of us is such a precious gift!
