Inspiring today’s leaders to create a better tomorrow for Western Australia.

WE CALL UPON A DIFFERENT KIND OF LEADER How do you become an exceptional leader? Of course, there is no one answer to this question. We must each develop our own distinct style and techniques. As we do so, we can still learn a great deal from our heroes and our contemporaries. At Leadership WA we empower our graduates to do just that. We bring together leaders from the corporate, not-for-profit and government sectors, in a collaborative environment, to inspire and enhance exemplary leadership. Since we began our work in 2004, our vision has been to foster a strong leadership philosophy and practice that goes beyond personal and professional development. A vision that works to enhance the whole of the Western Australian community.

“Leadership WA has helped me realise that there is no magic way to become a great leader. It was refreshing to hear very successful people speak and realise that they have felt, at some point, the very same uncertainties and fears that I have. The big take away for me is to be committed, love what you do and to just do it!” – Sharlene Cosgrave FLWA, General Manager, Financial Controller, Rio Tinto Australia, 2012 Signature Leadership Program participant

BRINGING OUT THE BEST At Leadership WA, we believe that the best way to learn is through experience. • The experience of exploring the real issues of our State first-hand • The experience of discussions with influential leaders, candidly exploring real-life leadership issues • The experience of sharing stories, problems and solutions with peers from a diverse range of sectors Great leaders thrive on challenge, which is why our Leadership Development Programs take participants beyond their comfort zone to engage with all perspectives of our community. They are challenged, connected, informed and energised as we delve into a range of key issues including health, media, the economy, education, justice, science and the arts.

“I was challenged to recognise not only the value of who I was and what type of leader I wanted to be, but more importantly what true leadership means and how it can be achieved. Through the different experiences I was compelled to test how I operate as a leader. I am very grateful for being given the opportunity to participate this year and look forward to giving back to my community in the years to follow.” – Michelle Bastian FLWA, Manager, Corporate Strategy & Innovation - Organisational Development, Main Roads Western Australia, 2012 Signature Leadership Program participant

“Leadership is one of the most important elements of any enterprise. So it’s really important that great people are developed. It’s equally important for Western Australia. I love the unique way Leadership WA inspires interaction between leaders in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. And the way people have to work, not just at what they’re doing, but also within a broader community, as part of the program.” – Richard Goyder AO, Managing Director, Wesfarmers

LEADING THE WAY THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT To create a healthy community, a balance must be found between the competing demands of the social, cultural, economic and environmental spheres. Leadership WA’s key objective is to build stronger communities through our programs and initiatives. We believe that today’s leaders have the potential to make a real difference and our Alumni set the standard. Every year through our growing Skillsbank, experts from a wide variety of professional disciplines donate their time to provide strategic advice and support to not-for-profit entities and projects across Western Australia.

“Being a part of a Leadership WA program isn’t just about being challenged and inspired for one year. It’s about carrying what you’ll learn in that time with you in everything you do. It’s about applying it to how you think and how you make your mark on the world around you. I’m proud to be a part of a network of Alumni who pull together to improve the lives of Western Australians every single day.” – Justine Colyer FLWA, Chief Executive Officer, RISE, 2008 Signature Program participant

TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE Since its inception in 2005, Skillsbank has assisted over 100 community organisations in Western Australia, providing more than 7,000 hours of community service. In 2011 alone, Leadership WA provided an estimated overall value of $3.1 to $4.0 million to community organisations, who in turn were able to support an additional 2,100 people. Our Alumni have given their time to many vital community organisations, including the Australian Red Cross, The Big Issue, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and the Conservation Council of Western Australia. Contributions take many forms, including board support, event planning, mentoring, brand development, advocacy, media communications advice and project facilitation.

“Leadership WA brings fresh perspectives into our organisation which challenge and provoke the critical thinking and analysis required for continuous improvement. It does this through the eyes of successful leaders from so many different disciplines. It’s the ultimate brains trust that is uniquely placed to apply best practice advice in a confidential, caring and respectful way, that contributes to our vision and mission. Best of all, it is two-way, and our association with Leadership WA builds mutual respect. It gives aspiring leaders an in-depth view of vulnerability and disadvantage in WA, and what actions leaders need to take to redress this moving forward.” – Steve Joske, CSC, Executive Director, Australian Red Cross WA
