ABSTRACT

This survey is conducted and made to analyze the usage and the opinion of people about BLACKBERRY in the UAE, among universities and school students which would also it turn help other companies such as blackberry the company itself and their competitors. Blackberry was bought out to the world in 2003 and this was known as the modern smart phone. This was a device that not only functioned as a telephone but also allowed for the sending and receiving of email and text messages as well as web browsing. The current models are not only a communication device but also a personal digital assistant and a multimedia player. Cell phones have become the biggest necessity to everyone around the world. This device allows anyone to keep in touch with family, business associates and access email and this can be done in a matter of seconds, these are only one of the many reasons that gives a lot of importance to cell phones and how some people cannot live without it. In today’s technical advanced world phones are not only capable sending and receiving messages but they are also mostly used for storing devices, taking pictures and it can also be used as walkie talkies. Blackberry has a lot of media devices for both video and still images even more useful is the media player where every1 can listen to music and watch videos and its more helpful when a person travels long distance. All the phones are of different types with different screen sizes which is helpful and big as to no one will forcefully squint at the small screen. We bring in the competitions part, competitors are usually the one that built their own phones such as Samsung and LG. A lot of companies have tried this in the market but were unsuccessful; the challenge is to build the operating system that runs the phones. IPhones are the biggest competitors to blackberry as they are the only company tha make their own phones and operating system. IPhones are also the company that hurt the blackberry sales with such amazing makerting campaigns.

1. INTRODUCTION

This survey is primarily being conducted to analyze the usage patterns of Blackberry in the U.A.E, among university and school students, which would also in turn help different companies, such as Blackberry itself, and its competitors as well.

Figure 1.1 – Logo of the Company In 2003 BlackBerry introduced the first of what we would think of as being the modern smart phone. This was a device that not only functioned as a telephone but also allowed for the sending and receiving of email and text messages as well as web browsing. The current models are not only a communication device but also a personal digital assistant and a multimedia player. In addition a number of apps have been developed by other parties that add even more features to the phone. The result is a device that is capable of an amazing number of things. Its primary functions are its communication functions. The obvious one here is that it is a mobile phone and one that has a number of advanced functions. It is also capable of sending and receiving emails which in fact was one of the main attractions when it first came out. There is also the capability for instant messaging. As a result no matter where you go you are able to stay in contact with people no matter how they want to reach you. As long as there is wireless service you will have access to the full range of services.

The other main feature of the BlackBerry is that it has an internet browser. These days this is no big deal since almost all phones offer this but when the BlackBerry first came out this was quite revolutionary. There are a lot of advantages to using a BlackBerry as your mobile internet device since it has a larger screen 3

Figure 1,2 – Blackberry Feature

and keyboard than you will find on most other devices. The result is that most people find it to be a lot easier to use than other smart phones are when it comes to getting online. A BlackBerry also contains a number of media devices like a camera for both video and still pictures. Even more useful is the media player that can be used to listen to music or to watch videos. This is a useful device to have when you are traveling since you will have easy access to lots of entertainment options. This is another area where the larger screen size comes in handy. It makes it lot easier to watch video when you don't have a squint at a very small screen. In addition to all of its other features there are thousands of apps for the BlackBerry so you should be able to find one for whatever you need.

There was a time when BlackBerry pretty much had the entire smart phone market to themselves, but those days seem to be fading now. There is now so much competition for smart phone sales that the maker of BlackBerry Research in Motion is in serious financial trouble. The competitors who have come into the market are some of the biggest companies in the world. There are actually a lot of competitors for BlackBerry; the smart phone market is one of the most competitive in the world. This has resulted in a significant loss of sales for the company over the years. When the BlackBerry first came out they controlled the market and sales were huge. Since then there have been a lot of competitors appear and that includes some of the biggest companies in the world. As a result of this competition BlackBerry has fallen all the way to fifth in the marketplace. The good news however is that this competition has made for much better products for the consumer. Competitors include those companies that build the devices themselves, such as Samsung and LG. There are lots of companies who have tried to enter the market to build the devices, mainly because this is the easy part. Far more difficulty is building the operating system that runs it, companies that produce this are the other big competitor for Figure 1.3 Samsung Phone

BlackBerry.

4

The biggest direct competitor for BlackBerry is the iPhone of Apple since they are the only competitor who does the same as BlackBerry and makes the phone and the operating system themselves. It is also Apple who has really hurt the sales for BlackBerry the most with their very intensive marketing campaigns. There is considerable debate about who makes the

Figure 1.4 Iphone

better product but there is really no debate about who has done a better job of marketing their product. When Apple releases a new version of their iPhone there are huge lineups at the stores to get them, this just doesn't happen when a new BlackBerry comes out.

2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The study on how one mobile brand “BlackBerry”,has become an important and an extensive tool for the students and faculty, within Manipal University, Dubai. There are advantages and disadvantages of using BlackBerry, our research is done to identify the usage patterns of students and faculty primarily the duration for which people use their blackberry phones, and how effectively. Secondly, are aim is to find out whether all our people use all the services provided by the blackberry phones that they purchase and how many don’t use BlackBerry handsets.

For research purpose we used the Proquest database for finding out the media usage pattern of BlackBerry’s in UAE for academic purposes and cooperate industry. We used terms such as ‘blackberry’; ‘blackberry students’; ‘blackberry UAE’ to search on the Proquest database. Also through this research the University will have benefits like, broadcasting of any events will be easier; students can stay connected with their faculty formally and informally and transfer of pictures and videos of events or any other program or the highlights of any future programs can be broadcasted through Blackberry. Not only this research adds as a boon to the university but also for the company it gives a feedback on the features and services the consumers are satisfied with and also it provides a feedback on the features and services the consumers desire on their phones. Almost 80% of the students in Manipal University Dubai use BlackBerry for the messenger service it offers. BlackBerry is just another phone with a brand, what makes it outstanding is the services developed by RIM (Research in Motion), especially the messenger service. The quality of service varies from country to country based on the service providers such in UAE it is Etisalat or Du, both the companies offer reliable packages on the services in Blackberry. Almost 4-5 journals we went across to find out the problems caused by BlackBerry’s, and the subsequent issues it faces in UAE. The growth of BlackBerry among students, in the Proquest database, but across the 15832 results there are no research topics conducted on the Media usage pattern of BlackBerry’s. So we believe our research will be an effective one for both Manipal University and the company BlackBerry.

6

Not only students and faculty use Blackberry, but also people in the cooperate industry, research needs to be extended because the BlackBerry service developed by RIM has important features that are being used by many professionals in the cooperate industry which has improved the communications network.

4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS STUDY

A study was conducted to analyze the usage patterns of blackberry mobile phones in UAE. The study was mainly conducted on the students on school and colleges and would be beneficial for students, companies as well as Blackberry itself. The projects goal is designed to help students in their reference or guide in creating their study or research, to future researchers, he proposed study will benefits and help the future researcher as their guide. The study can also open in development of this study. By completing the study, we hope to achieve a better and a more thorough insight about the Blackberry usage amongst people and its used is involved in their everyday life and how it effects them. Blackberries and bbm-ing are all over the place. The latest trend, gadget or equipment doesn’t make you important. The meaningful work and things you do every day to change the world, innovate, or help another human being or animal makes you important. Why constantly keep your head down staring into a tiny screen of letters when you can keep your heap up and experience the important things on the larger screen of life. Gadgets can facilitate work, and they can also distract us from the more important things Blackberry can be useful in the classroom. The problem which arises is when students are not using the device as instructed. It, like many things, can become a block to education when used outside of the perimeters designated. That being said, to reiterate, they can be an important tool in the classroom when used properly. We can get several quick searches done more quickly and all the students get in on the thought process, trying to come up with the best words for the search. They also seem to enjoy doing something that is otherwise "forbidden." Since college students are always on the go, you don’t always have access to a computer, but you still need to get work done. There are research papers to write, PowerPoint’s to complete and spreadsheets to be calculated. This is where Documents-To-Go comes in handy. You can view files sent to you through BBM or email right on your BlackBerry. Not only can you view these documents on your phone, you can also edit them or create new ones. As soon as you know the details of the project assigned to you, you can immediately start typing notes or ideas into WordTo-Go. Keeping track of what needs to be done and when can easily be accomplished using the calendar or task manager on your BlackBerry. Short term assignments or goals can be added in 9

as a “task, with many customized options for how long it will take to fulfil these goals, the priority of it, notes about what it is, and when it needs to be finished. Long term goals can be put into the calendar along with a reminder a few days in advance just in case redecorating your room took priority. With all these new time management skills, you will be a 4.0 student in no time. Cell phones have become a necessity for many people throughout the world. The ability to keep in touch with family, business associates, and access to email are only a few of the reasons for the increasing importance of cell phones. Today's technically advanced cell phones are capable of not only receiving and placing phone calls, but storing data, taking pictures, and can even be used as walkie talkies, to name just a few of the available options. Cell phones are the perfect way to stay connected with others and provide the user with a sense of security. In the event of emergency, having a cell phone can allow help to reach you quickly and could possibly save lives. However, the importance of cell phones goes way beyond personal safety. Modern cell phones are capable of internet access, sending and receiving photos and files, and some cell phones are equipped with GPS technology, allowing for use in most locations around the world and allowing the cell phone to be found or the user located in the event of loss or emergency. The importance of cell phones has increased the competition in the wireless service provider industry, making cell phones very affordable and very easy to use. Cell phones have become almost a status symbol in addition to the convenience and security that comes from owning them. Blackberry mobile phones come with impressive looks and user-friendly features. These phones can help business users to remain updated with business happenings and deals taking place all over the world. Curve 8900, Pearl 8110, Storm 9500 and Bold 9000 are some smart models of Blackberry. All these phones come blessed with software with which users can synchronize the gadget with a laptop or computer. Built-in music player comes with major music formats like MPEG4, MP3/MP4, H263, H264 and WMV to provide superb music quality. Users would be happy to know that they can check out their e-mail accounts and can also remain updated on different social networking sites at any point of time. Moreover, World Wide Web can be accessed easily and one can grab several information’s available on any website. With the feature of GPS Navigation & Blackberry maps available with Blackberry handsets can help users to find out the location they are present in. 10

Blackberry reception has become reliable and of high quality due to advances in wireless technology. Wireless service providers offer excellent packages and promotions for cell phone users. Finding a dependable service provider is no longer an issue for blackberry users. The expansion of the wireless service provider industry gives cell phone users a choice and the increased competition has caused a drop in prices of wireless cell phone service. The importance of cell phones goes way beyond the ability to make or receive phone calls. Blackberry users can instantly send data to the home or office, check for important email, use their cell phone as a PDA or calendar, and store photos which can be easily transferred to a PC or laptop computer.

8. SUGGESTIONS

After a long study and research on the usage on blackberry by giving out questionnaire to student we have come up with a following suggestions for the improvement of the company in the future.

-

Blackberry should start with uploading new applications as to help students with their research and helps them through university/school. There should a dictionary applications as it would be very helpful.

-

Should be a very reasonable price that should be very affordable, shouldn’t be very expensive. With this advantage a lot of people can afford a blackberry.

-

They should try inventing video call that would be another easier way to chat with other people, and it should be free so more people would get attracted to it.

-

The battery life should be much longer as a lot of people have been complaining about it as the phone’s die very quickly.

-

The blackberry companies have to tie up with other services companies with other countries so it becomes easier for international services so everyone can use their phones outside without any difficulties.

-

Should allow bigger file space to be send through blackberry messenger so easier when people are far away as Bluetooth doesn’t work when people are at a distance.

-

Camera capacity should increase, as all blackberry have only 5 megapixels and they should increase a lot more as pictures can be clearer and much better.

-

All phones do not have flash for camera, so blackberry shouldallow all phones to have flash in them easier for people to click pictures.

9. CONCLUSION

The study is especially relevant for the financial advisor and consultants. The insight of how an investment choice gets affected by the demographic variables and perceptions helps the financial advisors to advise their clients better. The clients, on the other hand on being advice regarding the investments that suit their profile will not only rate such an advice higher but will also appreciate it. The study recommends that there is a need to help investors develop a right perspective of the investment schemes and their attributes. More similar studies should be undertaken with diverse samples at different locations and from time to time in order to be aware with the latest preferences of the investors. The study thus, will certainly improve the mutual trust between the advisor and his client
