PHOENIX RISING

SCRIPT Script for "Phoenix Rising" (Working Title) Scene I The full length of a drawn sword is held across the screen. Slowly, a scabbard is pulled over it as Kyoko collapses into Phoenix's arms. She is dressed in a white, bloodsplattered dress. The room is sparse. Kyoko's dialogue is in Japanese. PHOENIX You're hurt bad. Just stay strong, we're getting out of here KYOKO You've done everything that you could. PHOENIX I am not leaving you here. No, not after what we've been through together.

PHOENIX RISING

KYOKO: Look at my eyes, Phoenix. See the truth. Go. PHOENIX I will never leave you. I'll die with you first. I never meant to live through this anyway. It should be me, not you. PHOENIX: Remember that time, in Kyoto? We walked the whole length of Gion. KYOKO: The big, red lanterns hanging over us through willow trees. We walked down to the Kamo River, and you held me there as the cold water rushed downstream through the night, but the hot sake kept us warm and... PHOENIX I wish were were there now KYOKO We'll go again, we'll go soon After we get out of here... KYOKO dies. PHOENIX rises with the drawn sword. He alertly moves down a long hall. There is a spotlight on him, and his sword is covered in blood. He comes up upon a golden screen painted with white cranes and pulls them open. Waiting in the darkness is DRAGON. DRAGON aims a gun. PHOENIX begins to lower his sword and is shot dead, collapsing onto the golden doors. FADE OUT PHOENIX is in a bar, drinking heavily. A young Chinese woman is approaching. Electronic music is heavy and the lights are colorful. She draws her hand gently across his back as she sits beside him. He drinks without acknowledging her. She leans in close to whisper into the man's ear. LING: Phoenix. He looks over to her. PHOENIX Who are you? LING I'm a customer.

PHOENIX RISING

PHEONIX: And what do you need from me? LING: I'll pay extremely well. PHOENIX That's good. My vices are expenisive, you know. LING Forty thousand here, and another sixty when we arrive where i want in one week. PHOENIX I's a small job, but I'm afraid that simply won't be enough. LING That's better than we've ever payed anyone. Fine, one hundred fifty thousand. PHOENIX You expect to hire me for that? Quality comes at a price. People don't whisper my name on opposite sides of the planet without a reason. Three hundred. LING Done. PHOENIX looks to the bartender and calls out. PHEONIX Two gin and tonics and a shot of a shot of tequila. LING I don't drink tequila. PHOENIX laughs. PHOENIX It's for me. LING You're not what I expected from the stories. But it's definitely you. PHOENIX My name is known far and wide.

PHOENIX RISING LING A phoenix like you can't hide in this little city. It's past time that you let your spirit shine like your name. PHOENIX Well said! My customers are always so eager to coax me with pretty words. No wonder you're all filthy rich. LING We'll both be filthy rich when we get to Tokyo. PHOENIX Tokyo? No, I'm not going back to Japan. LING Not even for all that money? PHOENIX Especially not for all that money. LING I was worried you might say that. But there is something waiting for you there. PHOENIX And it's not a bullet? There are people there that need me dead, and with good reason. LING If you were my enemy I'd want you dead too. PHOENIX Maybe you are, and maybe you do. LING I'm you're friend. (CUT) Let's suppose that a certain someone hasn't forgotten what you did for them. You have someone that owes you. PHOENIX If they mean to compensate, let them come to me. I'm not ready to go get my head blown off. LING They have have come to you. Thats why I'm here. PHOENIX Then fill me in.

PHOENIX RISING

The two walk into a small room in the club, and draw a curtain. LING I'm Ling Chow, heiress of Chow Kong Holdings. With me I've got all of our history, numbers, and finance. In a week I'm personally handing them over to Morinaga Heavy Industries. PHOENIX Why? LING For compensation. PHOENIX You don't hand over your father's company for compensation from another. Is this a personal vendetta? LING My father is on his deathbed, and when he dies the board of directors will seize the company. It's as good as lost. PHOENIX And as your father lay dying his trusted advisors are trying very hard to make sure that you don't make it to Tokyo. You shouldn't have let them find out. LING They have spies. Very good ones. Scene III Phoenix and Ling are walking down the street in Chinatown. Someone is following them. PHOENIX You know, I'm starting to think that I'm actually getting good at this. When I started, man, I felt in over my head. LING: Sometimes you worry me, Phoenix. You're supposed to be the best. No bullets, no mess, if it comes that. PHOENIX stops and looks at LING. PHOENIX We're being followed.

PHOENIX RISING They duck around a corner. A man follows through. Phoenix grabs him and holds him against the wall. PHOENIX: Who are you? Why are you following us? O"DONNELL Relax. I'm not trying to hurt you. (sarcastic) PHOENIX I can smell a swine like you from halfway down the road. I won't ask again. Who are you? O"DONNELL Check the badge. I'm special agent Mike O'Donnell. Back off, Phoenix. LING casts an unsure look at PHOENIX. O"DONNELL Don't look so surprised. You know exactly what's going on here, and I've had enough of it. I watch you brazen criminals walk down my streets every day. Don't slip up. PHOENIX I never slip. O"DONNELL: I'm on to you. I know what your about, I know what you've been up to, and I'm putting an end to it. Understand? PHOENIX As you say. O"DONNELL And now I want you to be afraid- because I am following you, and I will continue to do so until I've gotten enough proof of what you are your friends are doing to put you all away for good. PHOENIX Alright. I appreciate it, really, but could be talk about it later? It's just that, well, I'm on a date here. O"DONNELL We'll do more than talk about it. O'Donnell exits.

PHOENIX RISING

LING A date? PHOENIX You're pretty enough. LING I've never had a bodyguard hit on me before. PHOENIX No need to worry about that, I can do much better. Scene IV (The dialogue is in mixed English and Cantonese) Kwang sits at a table in a discreet room. Chinese music is playing softly and he is looking at an old coin, hollow in the middle. He is on the phone. KWANG ....Today?..Uh huh... uh huh...got it. DRAGON enters, and his hand closes around the coin. He hangs up. KWANG "Have you ever heard the phrase 'A spark can start a fire that burns the entire prarie'? The DRAGON shakes his head and sits. KWANG What once seemed like such a small problem has grown into a fire that threatens to consume vast fortunes. DRAGON: Mind if I help myself? DRAGON begins to the the chicken feet off a plate. KWANG pours a drink for DRAGON and slides it across the table. DRAGON smells it before swallowing. KWANG You're distrusting. That's good, it means your smart.

PHOENIX RISING DRAGON: I'm thirsty... and hungry besides. Then again, twenty hours of planes and airports can do that. KWANG You must also be tired. I've made you're hotel arrangements, and for you to have a guest. A very pretty one. DRAGON: Good. Now, what does a phoenix matter to you? KWANG I'll tell you what. Kwang reveals the coin. DRAGON frowns. Kwang: This coin is special; it's a promise that must be granted. It is yours when Phoenix is dead and Ling is with me. DRAGON: I still don't believe that Phoenix is alive. I shot him myself. I saw his body, and then I saw the bodies he left behind him. There's no coming back from that. KWANG nodds. KWANG A phoenix dies, and then rises from its own ashes. Make sure he does not ever rise again. DRAGON: This time he stays dead. PHOENIX and LING are in a Chinese restaurant or bar. LING We fly out on friday. If they're going to make their move, it'll either be tonight or tomorrow. PHOENIX Don't you love living in constant anticipation and fear? LING

PHOENIX RISING I don't like it. PHOENIX Then what do you have in mind? LING We take them instead. PHOENIX I'd rather sit right here and not do a damn thing until our flight except knock back a few mai tais. LING It's simple. We let them take me, and then you can take them out. PHOENIX (laughs) I thought that you might be crazy when I heard your story. Now I know it. I'm your bodyguard, and you want me to let them kidnap you? Ling: But you'll be close at hand. Do not let them get away with me. PHOENIX This is very risky. LING If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that sometimes you have to take risks. PHOENIX Why don't we just lay low? LING They'll follow us. I want to make a stand. Scene VI LING sits waiting on a Chinatown bench, near the gate. PHOENIX is in the distance watching. Two men quietly and quickly take her away, disappearing into an alley. Phoenix quickly follows. They hold a gun to her and move off with her. A man holds a gun to back throat, saying something which isn't clear. Phoenix walks out to them carrying a sword with a plain wooden handle and scabbard. They give chase for a while, but LING slows them and PHOENIX catches up. KWANG Phoenix! Don't worry! I'll scatter your ashes myself.

PHOENIX RISING PHOENIX keeps walking. KWANG looks at Ling and grabs her. PHOENIX continues walking, and readies his sheathed sword. KWANG Drop that or the bitch gets a bullet. DRAGON: Get out of the way, Kwang. KWANG: Alright, then, take him out! DRAGON Remember the last time we met? Those were the days; days where you could give a shit and it mattered. PHOENIX And then I stopped giving a shit. DRAGON I shot you dead myself. Was I dreaming, or am I seeing a ghost? PHOENIX You know what you're seeing, now believe it.

DRAGON: The Phoenix that I knew was like steel folded on itself a thousand times and polished to perfection. You're nothing more than a lump of iron.

LING Why don't you help me? I'm paying you for something aren't I? PHOENIX I'm not here to save you. I'm here to kill him. LING You can't do this to me!

PHOENIX RISING KWANG I'll do it, quai-loh. She'll die here and so will you. LING Asshole! PHOENIX Hell, I've got nothing to lose. KWANG throws LING aside and fires his gun. O'DONNELL reveals himself, gun drawn. O'DONNELL Drop the gun! You're under arrest! KWANG shoots. O'DONNEL fires back. KWANG shoots again and kills O"DONNEL. Meanwhile, PHOENIX has drawn his sword and swings at and cuts KWANG. KWANG reacts firing a shot toward PHOENIX, but misses drastically as PHOENIX again cuts KWANG, who then dies. DRAGON draws his gun and PHOENIX inches forward They move slowly while: DRAGON If you were Phoenix I'd be dead by now. PHOENIX: You're about to be. DRAGON: The real Phoenix didn't slave away for things like money. He dedicated his life to what made his spirit burn like fire. PHOENIX: You work for money. Don't bullshit me. LING: How much was he paying you? I'll double it. Triple it! (toward DRAGON) DRAGON You're nothing more than an impostor! Let me see the scars I gave you when I put two rounds in your chest. PHOENIX opens his shirt to reveal that he has no scars. DRAGON is dumbfounded.

PHOENIX RISING

PHOENIX Do you even remember the last lesson sensei ever taught us? DRAGON You wouldn't know, you weren't there. PHOENIX Neither were you. DRAGON aims his gun and shoots, hitting Phoenix, who then hits the ground. Ling screams. DRAGON: Arrogant bastard. Phoenix slowly pulls himself up. DRAGON I'll do it right this time. DRAGON tucks his gun away and draws an axe or dirk. He walks up to PHOENIX, who is struggling to rise from the ground under the weight of his sword. DRAGON strikes downward, but PHOENIX falls to the side just before. DRAGON cuts down again, but PHEONIX escapes, limping. DRAGON gives calm chase but PHOENIX turns cuts across quicker and injures DRAGON. DRAGON falls. DRAGON ( To Himself) Shit. I'm cut. DRAGON is crawling. DRAGON Do it, Phoenix, you son of a bitch. Do it! PHOENIX:

His final lesson was "In the void is virtue, and no evil." LING: He's dead. They're all dead. PHOENIX: Yeah, they are. LING: I hope your ready.
