3rd Annual India Catholic Deaf Retreat 2018

“EPHPHATHA!” (BE OPENED!) – MARK 7:34

Organised by

CATHOLIC DEAF ASSOCIATION OF INDIA (ALL CATHOLIC RITES) “CDAI IS AN ORGANISATION OF CATHOLIC DEAF PEOPLE AND HEARING PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH WORKING WITH THE DEAF IN INDIA”

BIRTH OF CDAI

The first meeting of Catholic Deaf leaders in India was started in Kottayam on December 9th, 2017 during the inauguration program of Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry). We discussed about how to save Deaf Catholics from falling to other churches like Jehovah Witnesses, DOORS, and other Protestant churches. These other churches have beautiful sign language and excellent in Deaf Ministry. Catholic Deaf leaders are trying our best to assist the Deaf Ministry of Fr. Priyesh and Fr. Biju who are the only priests to assist deaf ministry publicly in India. Catholic Deaf leaders need coordination of Deaf Catholics all over India in order to make more effective for rescuing Deaf Catholics from falling into other churches. Therefore, Catholic Deaf leaders created new organization known as Catholic Deaf Association of India and elected Stalin Thomas from Ernakulam as President of CDAI and Joshy C F from Thrissur as Secretary of CDAI. Catholic Deaf leaders need approval of these priests on this new organization. So, President asked these priests and they accepted this new organization. President and Secretary of CDAI continue to work with these priests and organize CDAI meetings in future. They are working on to get the recognition of CBCI on CDAI. Sd/-

Message from Chaplian Much delighted to pen down a few lines on the effective spiritual animation that takes place among the deaf brethren in Church of Kerala and other parts of India. This was a dream of Holy Cross Missionaries who heritage was carried out by Fr.Harry Stocks, CSC. I am much pleased to be part of his movement and contribute at the helm of this great cause. Those silent accompaniments with deaf during the past 10 years made Holy Cross manifest under the holistic and symbolic logo called NAVADHVANI. It remains a contributive faculty in building of equally unified body of Christ. Christ becomes complete when fragmented sections of the society turned fragrance inside and outside the Church. It is this mission NAVADHVANI dreams, signs, acts and relishes with our deaf brothers and sisters. We walk along with the deaf to empower them in all aspects of their lives. Congratulations to all those deaf and hearing people of God who turn instrumental to this great work of God. Fr. Biju L. Moolakkara, CSC

Message from Chaplain Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, Praise the Lord, I am grateful to Lord for being with the chosen people of God. Every person is gifted with different ways to express oneself to the world. We are the people of total communication. So let’s come forward, let’s bind together with the love of God, let’s witness God wherever we are. ADAM (Accompanying Deaf and Awakening Mission), is a mission to help each other to strengthen our faith in God, to know Him and to walk with him. Prayerful wishes and support to CDAI in its efforts to proclaim the word of God. Fr. George (Priyesh) Kalarimuriyil Archdiocese of Thalessery

Message from President and Secretary of CDAI It is rightly that “A dream becomes a goal when action is taken towards its achievement” and we are committed in taking constructive and purposeful actions to produce optimistic, independent, compassionate, life-long learners and Catholic Deaf leaders who will bring glory to our Association, the Church, the Nation and the World. As we are ready to set our foot into the beginning of functioning it gives us immense pleasure to share with you that Catholic Deaf Association of India, has been approved by our spiritual directors – Fr. Priyesh Kalarimuriyil and Fr. Biju Moolakkara then we, together are working on to get the recognition of CBCI on CDAI. It was a proud moment when our association was establilshed on 9 th December, 2017 during the inauguration program of Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry). The well chalked out Catholic Deaf programmes enable the Catholic deaf people to attain their full potential for developingvisual work habits of CATHOLIC FAITH at 3rd Annual Catholic Deaf Retreat at Mother Home Retreat Centre, Pariyam, Kannur. We continue to endeavour by reaching greater heights.

Stalin Thomas President

Joshy C.F. Secretary

History of Catholic Deaf Association of India (CDAI) Before the Catholic Deaf Association of India (CDAI) was established informally on December 9 th, 2017 at Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry)Kottayam in Kerala, there were many scattering Catholic Deaf Communities all over India. It is irony to see these communities still scattering even though Catholic Church in India is very strong unity in community through the hard work of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). Catholic Deaf Communities have their own unique culture, Deaf Culture and their own natural language, Indian Sign Language. CBCI is learning on this culture and language. For thousand years ago, there were not strong connections between Deaf communities and Catholic bishops in India. Therefore, Catholic Deaf Communities were scattered. While CBCI is learning on this culture and language, Catholic Church in India is lucky to have few Indian priests who already have knowledge on the Deaf Culture and Indian Sign Language. These priests are able to unite scattering Catholic Deaf Communities in India. These priests are like following the parable, The Lost Sheep. Jesus Christ ignored 99 sheep to find 1 lost sheep. Deaf Catholics are the lost sheep. These priests are trying to unite Catholic Deaf communities and eventually unite deaf community to the hearing community of Catholic Church in India. Before unite these deaf communities, Catholic Deaf Communities were already there due to many religious people like brothers and nuns. Catholic Deaf Communities were started due to the available of Catholic deaf schools and college in India. These schools and college are the first deaf schools and college in India. Honestly, Catholic Church started the foundation of the general deaf community in India. It would be nice for us CDAI to know the history of each Catholic Deaf Community in India. Eventually, CDAI presents these communities to CBCI and ask CBCI for the approval of official CDAI formally. Therefore, we are writing the history of each Catholic Deaf Community in India here. The detail of deaf ministries in India as under:

a) Bombay Center for the Deaf (BCD) The first Catholic Deaf Community in India is Bombay Center for the Deaf (BCD). BCD is located in Bandra, Mumbai. The presence of this community in Mumbai is due to the presence of Catholic Deaf School in Mumbai. This school is The Stephen Deaf School, Dadar, the first deaf school in India. Now, we understand the foundation of Catholic Deaf Community in Mumbai, the history of Bombay Center for the Deaf is given here. The founder of Bombay Centre for the Deaf is Rev. Fr. Freddy J. Alphonso, S.J. He was passed away on 10th June, 1994. He was the first chaplain for the deaf in the whole of India (1969-1994). He used the sign language in his deaf ministry. He has deaf family members i.e. younger deaf brother and deaf sister. His deaf siblings helped him to involve in the deaf ministry.

When he was passed away, his younger deaf brother Mr. StannyAlphonsa and younger hearing brother, Father HerbertAlphonsaS.J. took the reins of Fr. Freddy. He and his deaf wife are the leaders of Bombay Centre for the Deaf. BCD is the chapter 101 of International Catholic Deaf Association.BCD will be 50 years old organization next year; therefore, Catholic Church of India must thank to BCD for protecting the remnant of Catholic Deaf Culture in India otherwise Protestant churches will wipe the Catholic Deaf Culture in India. BCD organises Holy Mass (Sign Language) at St. Theresa Church, BandraWest, Mumbai on Sundays.

b) Accompanying Deaf and Awakening Mission (ADAM) Fr. George (Priyesh) Kalarimuriyil leads ADAM originated in Kannur on 16th September 2017. His deaf uncle inspired him to involve in the deaf ministry. Therefore, he requested Archbishop George Valiamattom for learning the sign language and got the permission. So, he completed studies on Indian Sign Langauge. He helps Deaf Catholics in India. He conducted deafretreats at Mumbai. He also conducts deaf retreats in Mother Home, Parriyaram, Kannur. And Catholic Deaf Community in Alakode, Kannur regularly. In addition, he visits to the deaf schools in South Kerala.

c) Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry) Fr. BijuMoolakkara, CSC founded the deaf ministry i.e. Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry) on 9 th December 2017. Fr. Harry Stocks, CSC, from Canada helped him to involve in the deaf ministry. Fr. Harry was the second chaplain for the deaf in the whole of India. Fr. Biju started to work full time for the Deaf Ministry in July 2016. He is working very hard to visit other places – Churches and Schools in Kerala for offering Holy Mass, Retreats and Confessions in Sign Language. He also blessed five deaf couples for Marriages so far. Finally, Fr. Biju taught deaf Catholic people who visited to Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry) for deaf Catholic programmes.

The important deaf ministries in India are Bombay Centre for the Deaf (BCD), Accompanying Deaf and Awakening Mission (ADAM) and Navadhvani (Holy Cross Deaf Ministry). These organizations are trying to assist deaf ministry in churches, schools and colleges all over India. These two priests are able to unite various Catholic Deaf Communities in India. Therefore, Catholic Deaf Association of India (CDAI) was formed by various activities in BCD, ADAM and Navadhvani. CDAI asks the blessings of CBCI to start the official CDAI formally in order to unite Deaf Catholics of India. Unity of Deaf Catholics helps to protect them from falling into other churches priority.
