A Pleasant Aloha!

Every island boasts an array of fun activities Fall is a great time to visit the islands. Not only is it less crowded, but temps are comfortable and there are no frosty nights—except for the 14,000-foot summit of the Big Isle’s Mauna Kea! Pleasant Hawaii Magazine is full of great ideas for having a fabulous time. All the islands offer guided adventures by land or by sea. Get into nature on a hike. Soar like a bird on a zipline. Bicycle down a volcano. See Hawai‘i’s underwater world via snorkeling, scuba or Snuba and on the way, cruise or sail spectacular coastlines while enjoying a host of creature comforts. You can even go on a submarine! Above the waves, hang 10 on a surfboard, amp up the adrenaline on a jetski, soar in a parasail or toast the tropics on a romantic sunset dinner cruise. Each island is unique and each part of every island provides something fun to discover: O‘ahu offers exciting Waikiki and its famous beach, compelling wartime memorials, nightlife, lots of shopping and its own version of “country” on the North Shore. Be sure to check out the O‘ahu events calendar on page 7. Maui is home to towering Haleakala National Park and the scenic Road to Hana. It boasts historic Lahaina town, ‘Iao Needle and the nearby offshore islands of Lana‘i and Moloka‘i, plus the islet of Molokini. The Big Island of Hawai‘i, with an erupting volcano, is defined by its topography. Find numerous waterfalls on the Hamakua Coast, an often wintery white summit atop Mauna Kea, unparalleled exploring in Waipi‘o Valley and hometown hospitality in Hilo. Fall brings the annual coffee harvest, see page 29 for details on the state’s oldest foodie event: the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival November 1-10. Kaua‘i, nicknamed The Garden Isle, is geologically the oldest of the major Hawaiian Islands and it has been etched by eons of rain and surf to make it green and lush. The majestic Napali Coast is a sight to behold, along with Kaua‘i’s many public gardens, Waimea Canyon and Koke‘e. Pleasant Activities A DIVISION OF

The peaceful, hallowed grounds of Pearl Harbor reminds visitors of the sacrifices made by the courageous men and women of December 7, 1941. On that quiet Sunday morning, personnel were just beginning to face the day as 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet sat in the calm waters of Pearl Harbor. Seven of nine battleships were tied up along Battleship Row and naval aircraft were perfectly lined up at O‘ahu’s air stations. The first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived at 7:55 a.m. The USS Arizona exploded at approximately 8:10 a.m. It would be the first of many explosions that day. Remember and honor the heroes of December 7 at the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor, collectively known as the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. Each tells the compelling story of World War II as it was fought on land, in the water and in the air. For info, call 1-888-229-7770.

Maui County Festivals of Aloha

Catch the aloha spirit at the 67th annual Aloha Festivals, September 12-28 on O‘ahu. Events share the history and traditions of Hawai‘i and the friendly spirit of aloha with both malihini (visitors) and kama‘aina (residents). A celebration of Hawaiian culture, activities also integrate the traditions of Hawai‘i’s many rich ethnic cultures through music, dance, cuisine and art. This year’s festival pays tribute to traditional Hawaiian ocean voyaging with the theme, “Moana Nui Akea – Celebrate Ocean Voyaging.” The theme coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, which has inspired generations of modern-day mariners to boldly retrace the paths of their Pacific ancestors. The society has fostered the revival of the wa‘a kaulua (double-hulled sailing canoe) and the art of traditional wayfinding—the practice of non-instrument navigation, using the sun, stars and wave patterns to travel the ocean. “The 2013 Aloha Festivals honors the important Hawaiian value of Moana Nui Akea by celebrating the brave and inspiring canoe builders, voyagers and navigators who have strived tirelessly to help keep our native culture vibrant,” says Helene “Sam” Shenkus, co-chair of the Aloha Festivals board of directors. A highlight of Aloha Festivals is the royal court, a re-enactment of the ruling Hawaiian entourages from long ago. Dressed in period clothing, the royal court serves as a living, teaching tool. The blowing of the conch shell signals the arrival of the court, which presides at many Aloha Festival gatherings. Adding to the pageantry are kahili bearers, who carry tall feather standards announcing the royal court’s location. Aloha Festivals is also known for its large ho‘olaule‘a (celebrations) with hands-on fun, food, craft booths and entertainment. All events are free and open to the public. The Festivals is supported by the sale of logo merchandise and Aloha Festival ribbons. For details on events, visit 12 Pleasant Hawaii Magazine •

Polynesian Cultural Center commemorates its 50th anniversary

Bringing Polynesia to you An experience at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) in La‘ie is an immersion into the exotic cultures of Polynesia. It’s the one location in the state that closely depicts the traditions of Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga. In 2013, PCC celebrates 50 years of actively preserving and perpetuating these cultures through exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities. To celebrate its golden anniversary, PCC hosts a week of festivities, September 1-8. The actual 50th anniversary date is October 12. A Brief Look Back Within close proximity of one another, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i campus and the beautifully pristine Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) stand as the community’s pillars. The three are, and have always been, intertwined as La‘ie’s centers of culture, learning and spirituality. PCC’s roots go back to 1948 when church members started a hukilau in La‘ie as a fundraising event. It grew into “Polynesian Panorama,” a production of authentic South Pacific island songs and dances that drew busloads of visitors from Waikiki. In 1962, more than 100 labor building missionaries volunteered to help build PCC’s original 39 structures on a 16-acre site. Skilled artisans and materials from the South Pacific were brought in to ensure authenticity. On October 12, 1963, PCC opened to the public. Admission was just $1.50 for adults, children were 75 cents. Toward the Future The Polynesian Cultural Center continues to evolve. Learn about the ahupua‘a, lo‘i kalo and loko i‘a and much more. Visitors can also experience a new immersive cinematic adventure with “Hawaiian Journey.” Majestic mountains, roaring waterfalls, lush forests and volcanoes come to life with customized special effects that put you front and center. PCC continues to enrich the visitor experience, but more importantly, the light of aloha whether from a cultural or spiritual source, continues to burn bright within every individual at PCC. Combined with the spirit of collaboration and unity, all merge to create a consummate experience for every visitor.

Adjacent to McBryde is the more intimate Allerton Garden, a former private estate filled with gravity-fed water features, art and outdoor rooms. On the north shore of Kaua‘i is NTBG’s Limahuli Garden, which holds lavarock taro terraces dating back hundreds of years. Kahanu Garden on Maui is home to plants used by Pacific Islanders.

Magnificent Waimea Canyon Nicknamed by Mark Twain as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon is a 10-mile-long complex of 3,000-feet-deep gorges. Scientists say the chasm was cut by millions of years of stream erosion. The canyon’s cliffs are painted a kaleidoscope of ochre red, emerald green and gold—while the rim is often topped with a blanket of gauzy clouds. The Hawaiian name Waimea refers to the reddish water (wai means fresh water, mea means red) that flows from the canyon after a rain. Located above the town of Waimea on Kaua‘i’s west side, Waimea Canyon affords motorists scenic overlooks on Highway 552-Kokee Road. The uphill drive to canyon vistas continues to the 4,000-foot Koke‘e State Park and on to perches peering into Napali valleys and the ocean beyond. Heading up, the most expansive view into the canyon is just past MM 10. Spy Waipo‘o Falls on the pullout just past MM 12 and less than a mile further is the marked Pu‘u Hinahina Lookout with a vantage of neighboring Ni‘ihau. Two marked canyon trails can be picked up between MM 8-9; one is difficult, the other is easy. The steep Kukui Trail starts at 2,700 feet and winds 2.5 miles to the canyon’s bottom. The trek back up is strenuous with no shade. At the top of the Kukui Trail is the short, half-mile Iliau Nature Loop that traverses dry forest and goes past Wai‘alae Falls. The nature hike is named after the iliau plant, Wilkesia gymnoxiphium, which is native to dry, western Kaua‘i. Be on the lookout for its showy flowering head that sits atop a tall stalk. Michelle Hookano of Koke‘e Museum recommends the Iliau Nature Loop for sweeping views of the canyon and a chance to spy midland birds like the White-tailed tropicbird, the Erckel’s francolin and the occasional pueo (Short-eared owl).
