The National Capital Exhibition will be undergoing an exciting redevelopment. FOOD FOR THOUGHT While Australia’s capital may be small, its culinary offering is anything but – here are a few recent arrivals to tempt your tastebuds. BAKED M–F 7am–3pm, Sa Su 7am–4pm Clement Chauvin and Abel Bariller, the dynamic duo behind Les Bistronomes, have opened a new bakery-cumpatisserie across the road from their French bistro in Braddon. The pair initially toyed with the idea of a focus on bagels, but they eventually landed on the “bragel” – a cross between a bagel and brioche. According to Chauvin and Bariller, their hybrid is fluffier and a whole lot more buttery. Highlights include the Hells Kitchen, a chilli flake bragel with smoky bacon, fried egg, avocado, lime and sriracha, and The Waldorf, a walnut bragel with blue cheese, witlof, pear and a delicious honey balsamic dressing. Good news for bragel backers, there are whispers that a liquor license could be on the cards, which would mean bragels and beers Friday

and Saturday nights. 38 Mort St, Braddon; bakedonmort.com.au

HIGHROAD M 7am–4pm, Tu–F 7am–late, Sa 8am– late, Su 8am–3pm Ona Coffee, Canberra’s largest specialty coffee company, has unveiled an all-day venue in the inner north of Canberra. Paying homage to the raw and refined elements of Australia’s bush capital, Highroad serves up specialty coffee, a diverse wine list, both local and interstate craft beer, and a contemporary menu featuring the finest Australian ingredients. For brunch feast on waffles with eucalyptus gel, chocolate, milk crumble, mascarpone and berry textures, or for lunch, the fried chicken burger with chilli mayo, pickled cucumber and iceberg on a potato bun. In the evening sample a selection of dishes including

pork knuckle and lamb tartare, before you end on a sweet note with chocolate mousse. Cnr Cape and Woolley sts, Dickson; highrd.com.au

MEADOW M–F 7am–2.30pm, Sa 8–2.30pm Munch on tasty brunch options at Meadow in the city’s Odgers Lane. The new café, which lives and breathes sustainability, showcases the best produce from around the region. Cheesecake pancakes, Thai toast and the Meadow roll – fried haloumi, poached egg, aioli and chipotle on a brioche bun – are just some of the must-try menu items. Coffee fiends will delight in a brilliant brew from the familyowned Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters, alongside specialty tea from Storm in a Teacup and the pièce de résistance of hot chocolate, Mork Chocolate. DOUGHNUT DEPARTMENT M–Th 7.30am–5pm, F 7.30am–9.30pm Yes, Doughnut Department is as dreamy as it sounds. These yeast-raised, hand-cut rings of joy can be found inside a cute café in the city’s No Name Lane Precinct. Chef Nathan Frost fills his delightful doughnuts with the best local and Australian ingredients. And every Friday Doughnut Department, or double D’s as it’s affectionately known, presents Late Nights & Love Bites. ONE PERFECT DAY IN CANBERRA From sky-high adventures to national treasures and gastronomic highlights, you’ll be spoilt for choice in this little but lively capital.

5AM

EARLY MORNING

Nothing beats drifting over beautiful Lake Burley Griffin in a hot air balloon at sunrise. In fact, Canberra is one of the few places in the world where you can regularly take a flight over a nation’s capital. Multiaward winning Balloon Aloft operates daily flights (weather dependent), which offer an incredible bird’s eye view of Canberra’s architectural highlights. All flights conclude with a champagne celebration, and the option of a gourmet

breakfast at Canberra Hyatt Hotel post flight.

10AM

MID-MORNING

Visit the gorgeous National Arboretum, located only 10 minutes from the centre of Canberra. Home to 94 forests, the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection, stunning sculptures, feature gardens and the awesome Pod Playground. Admire the expansive views across Canberra from the dramatic interior of the award-winning Village Centre.

12PM

LUNCH

Canberra is home to some great museums and gallery spaces, with the major ones close enough to tick them all off in one day. Explore the interesting permanent treasures and one-off exhibitions at the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia, before settling in for lunch inside the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. Hoi Polloi, somewhat of a Canberra dining institution, serves a contemporary Australian menu featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. Try the signature Hoi Polloi Burger. And after lunch take a guided tour and discover how vibrant and controversial the road to Australian democracy has been.

2PM

AFTER LUNCH

Be sure to also visit the Australian War Memorial, commemorating the sacrifice of Australians who have fought and died at war. And if time permits, head over to the Royal Australian Mint and marvel at the rare and significant coins on show from the National Coin Collection – and get the chance to make your very own coin.

LATE NIGHT

Keen to kick on after dinner? Head over to Monster Kitchen and Bar in the award-winning Hotel Hotel. Open until 1am, there’s plenty of time to enjoy a Monster Cocktail or two. What will it be? Shaken or stirred? If you’re in for the long haul, head over to Casino Canberra, which remains open until 4am. The boutique European-style casino underwent an amazing transformation, and now features a new gaming floor and tables.

GETTING AROUND Here’s all you need to know about getting around Canberra. Unlike most major cities, Canberra boasts plenty of parking, no toll ways and very little congestion. Furthermore, Transport Canberra operates ACTION Buses, which are convenient and cost-effective way for visitors to make their way around the capital. Public transport enquiries 13 17 10; transport.act.gov.au

TICKETING The MyWay smartcard ticketing system provides a convenient and easy way to travel – passengers enjoy discounted fares provided they tag on and off with their smartcard at the start and end of their journey. MyWay cards may be purchased from more than 30 MyWay Recharge Agents located across Canberra, who are authorised to issue standard, tertiary, concession and student

MyWay cards. Travel Credit may be topped up in person, online, over the phone, via an autoload option or B-Pay. Register your MyWay card to ensure your travel credit is protected in the event that your card is lost, stolen or damaged.

BUSES Bus routes service most of Canberra – plan your journey online.

LIGHT RAIL Transport Canberra is in the process of rolling out a Light Rail Network, which will deliver a modern transport system for this growing city. Construction of the first stage, the 12km City to Gungahlin corridor, is now underway. Check the website for updates.

TAXI, CARS AND RIDE SHARE Taxi ranks are available around the city and at the airport. Ride share service Uber operates in Canberra. Car hire is available at the airport and points around the city – see page 48 for a list of companies and their contact information.

COACHES Murrays operates services between Canberra, Sydney, the South Coast and Wollongong, while Greyhound Australia operates services between Sydney and Canberra and Melbourne and Canberra. For timetables and fare prices visit: murrays.com.au; greyhound.com.au. GETTING AROUND 49

Welcome to the autumn issue of This Week in Canberra! This COUVREUR issue is jam-packed with everything you need to know about what’s happening around the city and beyond. You’ll be spoiled for choice this season, as the city comes alive with an array of events, including the annual Enlighten festival and Canberra Balloon Spectacular. Of course, arts, culture and political buffs won’t want to miss a tour around the Cultural Precinct where you’ll find an interesting line-up of new displays and exhibitions.
