As a textile researcher of the School of Material at the RCA, Mingjing has worked with multidisciplinary projects crossing fashion and textile design, scientific material development and digital fabrication. Her designs have been exhibited and performed at the RCA, the Digital Show and London Fashion Week. The latest collaboative exhibition: Inter-fashionality of the 3D Printed Chinese Dress, has gained attention from various publications. As the co-founder of A-boundary platform and 3W studio, she has also been endeavouring to spread the knowledge of 3D-printed fashion and smart textiles through workshops and conferences among colleges and companies including iMakr, Imperial College and Oxford University. This practice-led research at the RCA aims to fundamentally discover the new possibilities and meaning of 3D-printed textiles for fashion design. By adapting 3D-printing and advanced parametric modeling tools, designing 3D textiles forms the main focus of this research. These practices also contribute to reveal the potential of interdisciplinary design and question how digitalization challenges new concepts of fashion and textiles.

Embedding kinetic capabilities in Nylon monofilament through morphological transformation Ana’s research investigates the use of movement as material to design adaptive and responsive textiles that convey agency and behaviour. The expressive properties of movement are presented as a new layer of dynamic expression in the textile and used to bring life-like qualities to the inert material. The work showcased here arises from the material exploration stage of this research and aims at embedding kinetic capability at the fiber level through mechanical transformations. Using Nylon monofilament and exploiting its particular thermal expansion properties, diverse fibre geometries were created by combining twisting and coiling techniques with heat-set treatments. The result is a collection of heat-responsive fibre morphologies with amplified aesthetic qualities that will be scaled up and used to create self-actuated interactive fabrics and textile installations to discuss scenarios of empathic interior spaces that offer enhanced spatial experiences. Ana Piñeyro is a Research Associate in Textiles at the Royal College of Art and part of the ArcInTexETN program, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. She is a textile designer with a background in experimental textile design as well as design and development of electronic textiles for interactive applications. She holds a master in Cognitive Systems and Interactive Media; she has lectured in textile design related topics and worked in colour & material design for the automotive industry.

Biodigital Architecture incorporating micro-organisms within the manufacturing process forms a completely new material category and provides a huge potential for architectural design while breaking with paradigms of conventional material thinking as matter and materials can be no longer understood as a passive entity within the design process. Synthetic biology allows for re-coding cells and create â€œsoftware that creates hardwareâ€? which marks a fundamental shift in manufacturing technology as well as in the relationship between material and designer. -
