Clevelander Tips I n Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.”

If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company.

Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

History

he United States Customs and Border T Protection Agency provides inspection services for international passengers who arrive at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The Agency is located on the ramp level of Concourse A, across from Gate #5.

Weather leveland experiences all four seasons.

C Winter temperatures are generally within 20 to 40 degrees. Maybe you’ve heard the term “lake effect snow?” Spring could be a balmy 70 during the day, then drop to 45 degrees at night. Summer, we love it, and its perfect 80 degrees. Technically summer is over, but don’t tell Fall. The first cold blast usually hits sometime in November.

MOSES CLEAVELAND TREES

In 1946, Cleveland marked its sesquicentennial by christening 150 “Moses Cleaveland Trees”—living remnants of the forest that welcomed founder Moses Cleaveland back in 1796. Some still stand today as quiet witnesses to centuries of Cleveland history, including oaks in Lake View Cemetery and a nearly 400-year-old American sycamore in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

TERMINAL TOWER

Both iconic examples of Art Deco architecture, the Terminal Tower is to Cleveland as the Chrysler Building is to New York City. Once the second tallest building in the world, the Terminal Tower continues to stand tall as Cleveland’s most famous skyscraper. Ride up to the 42nd floor observation deck to appreciate 360-degree views that stretch up to 30 miles.

GUARDIANS OF TRANSPORTATION

The world knows the Guardians of Transportation as the namesake for Cleveland’s baseball team, but locals know them as so much more. These 43-foot-tall Art Deco figures are carved into the giant Berea sandstone pylons bookending the Hope Memorial Bridge. Each holds a different type of vehicle in their hands, meant to mark the progression—and protection—of modern transportation.

It may sound like a radio station tagline, but it’s true: Cleveland’s been churning out top music hits from the 1950s to today. From the smooth doo-wop of the Moonglows to the hard-hitting industrial rock of Nine Inch Nails, the Land and nearby Akron boast an impressive array of homegrown sounds.

No list of hometown music heroes would be complete without the rap trifecta of Machine Gun Kelly (who unites Clevelanders annually with his MGK Day celebration), Kid Cudi (known for his local ode “Cleveland is the Reason”) and Bone Thugs-NHarmony (who have their own same-named street at East 99th Street and St. Clair Avenue as the result of a successful fan petition). Also on the home team: The James Gang, The Raspberries, Dead Boys, The Pretenders and so many more.

On April 25, 1901, the Cleveland Blues took the field for the first game in American League history.

Now known as the Guardians, they’re the oldest of our city’s three major league teams and remain an integral part of summer—be it at League Park, Cleveland Stadium or the team’s current home, Progressive Field.

Equally beloved is Bertman’s Original Ball Park Mustard, a Cleveland original first served to sports fans in 1921. No hot dog is complete without it.

The Arc Lamp Before Thomas Edison went incandescent, Charles Brush pioneered electric lighting, illuminating Cleveland’s streets in 1879 and lighting up metropolises worldwide soon after. An ornate arc lamp fixture still glows at 127 Public Square.

Life Savers Conceived in 1912 as a melt-proof “summer candy,” these ring-shaped classics—beloved for their rainbow of fruit flavors—have come many nautical miles from inventor Clarence Crane’s original “Pep-O-Mint” offering.

Across the city, Cleveland is advancing its decades-long vision for a vibrant, interconnected waterfront.

The brainchild of Mayor Justin Bibb, the $5 billion Shore-to-Core-toShore project will link our riverfront, lakefront and downtown core.

North Coast Harbor is a key piece of this reimagined future, blending lakefront access with multi-modal transit and refined urban living.

Get a glimpse of what’s ahead at the pocket park, North Coast Yard.

Momentum continues with the North Coast Connector, set to break ground in 2027. This six-acre land bridge will connect Downtown directly to Lake Erie. Nearby, Irishtown Bend Park — a 25-acre greenspace in Ohio City — is well underway, offering sweeping panoramas of the Cuyahoga River and the city skyline. Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center Anchors aweigh at the new community sailing center. The sparkling facility at Cleveland Metroparks’ E. 55th Street Marina offers public access to sailing for both residents and visitors.

Dunham Tavern Museum The historic inn may be Cleveland’s oldest building still standing on its original site, but it’s stepping boldly into the future with a new Visitors Center and greenway connecting its bucolic grounds to bustling Midtown.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame The museum’s massive $175 million expansion is nearly ready to plug in and play. The new wing will feature concerts, traveling exhibits and expanded displays from its archives — all turned up to 11.

Primate Forest At Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Phase One of the 140,000-squarefoot primate exhibit is about to go ape. Orangutans are already swinging through their refreshed habitat, and soon gorillas will move into plush new primate digs.

West Side Market A gem of the city since 1912, the city’s public market is getting polished up. The renovated produce annex is open and thriving—with a teaching kitchen, sunny seating areas and more soon to follow.

As the sun sets, Cleveland really starts to sparkle. The nightly Illuminate CLE light shows bring Public Square to life—bathing icons like Terminal Tower and Old Stone Church in vibrant, shifting projections. It’s just one more way to appreciate Cleveland’s stunning skyline, in addition to amazing vantage points such as Voinovich Park, Edgewater Park and Tremont Overlook. Nightfall looks good on The Land.

Culture lights up the night at Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual Solstice bash.

Live bands and DJs provide an electrifying soundtrack as guests party on the South Terrace and browse art galleries.

The Guardians rallied from a historic deficit to win their second straight American League Central title in 2025. Led by perennial MVP candidate Jose Ramirez (fresh off signing an extension that should keep him in Cleveland through 2032), the Guardians look forward to another contending season.

Watch it all from Progressive Field, where $200 million worth of improvements includes new seats and a continued commitment to local food—including a new concession stand featuring Tremont’s STEAK. CLEVELAND BROWNS

Win or lose, Browns games are always an event. In addition to

A visual feast and celebration of imagination 34 years running, Parade the Circle will convene the community in Wade Oval once again on June 13 for a riotously colorful “Memento”-themed soiree featuring super-sized puppets and dazzling costumes. Pushing boundaries is the prime directive of BorderLight Theatre Festival (July 8-11). Last year’s edition attracted nearly 4,400 attendees to 150+ performances, and this year’s edition is sure to follow suit! This genre-defying showcase takes over the Playhouse Square district with a diverse lineup of dance, theatre, immersive experiences and more.

Beneath the glow of the iconic 20-foot-tall G.E. Chandelier, Playhouse Square shines bright as the second largest performing arts center in the country outside of NYC. The district spans nine historic theaters and an array of options for pre-dinner and drinks— including newer additions such as The Friar’s Table and Encore.

Playhouse Square’s spring and summer lineup promises to be equally compelling, with music icon David Byrne kicking off the season with his “Who Is the Sky” tour on May 7. Cleveland Ballet will enchant audiences with “Cinderella” (May 15-17), while Cleveland Play House brings the beloved Rodman Philbrick novel “Freak The Mighty” to the stage May 22 through June 21.

And don’t miss the KeyBank Broadway Series with touring productions of “The Outsiders,” “The Great Gatsby” and “The Lion King” from April through August.

Through February 2027, Ohio is writing a love letter of sorts to literary giant Toni Morrison with a yearlong statewide celebration. A Lorain native, Morrison was not only a Pulitzer Prize recipient, but also the first Black female Nobel Prize winner—leaving a legacy of critically acclaimed works such as Beloved and Song of Solomon.

Led by Literary Cleveland and several partner organizations, the celebration has libraries, organizations and arts groups across the state catching fire with an event lineup honoring the historical trendsetter.

We’ve been able to really become the center I feel our founders had envisioned.

n 2008, Letitia Lopez felt disconnected from her Puerto Rican heritage. She convinced her corporate employer to rent a car for her to ride in Cleveland’s annual Puerto Rican parade. Inspired to reignite her roots, Lopez began volunteering with the Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center, a non-profit promoting Latino culture and heritage through the arts. Soon she joined the Board of Trustees, eventually leaving her corporate role to become Executive Director.

Under Lopez’s leadership, the Brooklyn Centre-based center has seen enormous growth— moving into its permanent home in 2018 and expanding its class and activity offerings. What was originally meant to reconnect Lopez with her own cultural identity has bloomed into the chance to build a community space that helps others do the same. “We’ve been able to really become the center I feel our founders had envisioned,” says Lopez.

More than 21,000 people live in Downtown Cleveland, with an array of new residential options popping up for those who want to join their ranks.

Construction continues at Erieview Tower with plans for a 210-room W Hotel, 227 luxury apartments and a 38th-floor restaurant among other amenities. Marriott is also masterminding a $120 million redevelopment project known as “Project Scarlet,” which will reimagine the historic Rose Building with Marriott-branded apartments and a Tribute hotel.

Nearby on Prospect Avenue, the Electric Building is now leasing after a multimillion-dollar renovation with Tom’s Watch Bar set to open soon on the ground floor. And on the Scranton Peninsula, developments like The Collins at the Riverbend and Triton On the Flats add the potential for up to 1,000 residents along the Cuyahoga River.

About $1.3 billion in capital investments will afford exciting happenings like a 1-millionsquare-foot Neurological Institute building.

Additional projects include two new laboratory research facilities totaling 300,000 square feet, including the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research.

The U.K.-based aerospace company is shooting for the stars in Brook Park. It is building a $250 million commercial astronaut training and research facility near NASA Glenn, featuring a 50-meter-deep pool that mimics the extreme conditions of outer space and deep-sea exploration.

This facility will double as both a tricked-out training facility for our Cleveland Cavaliers and a world-class sports health center open to the public. Truly cutting-edge stuff—like incorporating artificial intelligence to help Clinic pros crack the code of athletic performance.

CANON HEALTHCARE USA

Canon has planted its flag in Cleveland by acquiring a 41,630-square-foot facility in University Circle, not far from Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.
