Taking a New Approach─The ACT ■

F

or over 100 years, one of the most daunting parts of the college application process has been made up of just three letters: SAT. Originally conceived as a screening test for students applying to top-tier East Coast colleges, the SAT has developed into a rite of passage for over 1.5 million teenagers annually. Needless to say, an industry has sprung up over the past quarter century regarding preparation for the exam. As a high school student in San Francisco, I was one of the students for whom the SAT and its preparation was basically a requirement. My mother and father, having grown up in New York City and New Jersey, respectively, both went through the same. None of us realized that at nearly the same time, in schools primarily in the Midwestern and Southern states, our peers were taking similar exam, yet completely different in several ways: the ACT. When I began in college admissions, I worked at a university in the South, and, to my surprise, the lion’s share of our students had taken the ACT rather than the SAT. I came to realize that this actually makes sense, as ACT’s offices are located in the Midwest, while College Board, the administrator of the SAT, is headquartered on the East Coast. Developed in the 1950s in order to provide students with an alternative to the SAT, the ACT currently has 1.2 million takers, and it is accepted at nearly every university that accepts the SAT. In fact, until recently, there were more universities that accepted the ACT rather than the SAT. Of course, a conversion scale exists, with a perfect 36 on the ACT equaling a 2400 on the SAT. California is dominated by the SAT, but that doesn’t mean that the test isn’t administered in the state. And, it is my contention that students should seriously consider taking the ACT in addition to the SAT. In my experience, I have encountered several students whose SAT scores are higher than their ACT scores. However,

by Eddie LaMeire ThinkTank Learning Senior Consultant

I have seen far more students whose ACT scores are immeasurably higher than their SAT scores. Why? The primary reason for this issue stems from the fact that the SAT is really primarily a reasoning test, as expressed in the official title of the exam, “The SAT Reasoning Test.” The SAT, in other words, is largely a logic exam. To put it in a simpler manner, a friend of mine who used to work for College Board, and who ultimately moved into tutoring the ACT, expressed it in this way: If a student encounters two similar problems from the SAT and the ACT, the SAT problem will typically have one additional step, intended to throw the student off. The ACT, conversely, is a far more content-oriented exam. Very little trickery exists within the problem sets, and the test is generally considered to be a far more straight forward exam. This theory tends to play out in practice. When I see the students who have scored far higher on the ACT than the SAT, they are almost exclusively the “pluggers.” They’re the hard workers, the ones who “grind it out,” the ones who get A’s, but who work for it. On the flip side, the students who walk into tests with no preparation and walk out with perfect scores, the kids who love puzzles and can finish the hardest of them during the commercial breaks of their favorite TV shows, the teenagers for whom everything seems to come so easy, are the students who typically fare better on the SAT than the ACT. To be continued… For next month, we’ll speak about some of the specifics of the ACT: the structure, the scoring, and general strategies. For right now, though, take an inventory of your son or daughter’s personality. Think honestly about where they stand. And, in the meantime, take a practice ACT. 7

The “Pre-med” Major ■

T

he majority of the students that we work with have an interest in the sciences, and a good number of them have an interest in ultimately moving on to medical school. When these kids are asked what they will ultimately study in college, quite a few naturally reply, “Pre-med.” But, exactly what does this mean? To set the record straight, for most schools, there is no such thing as a “pre-med” major or even a “pre-med” emphasis. So what is this term “pre-med” that we hear ever- so-often among aspiring doctors? Also, if there’s no “pre-med” major, what is an appropriate major to choose? Well, rather than being a major or even an emphasis, the term “pre-med” refers to an academic track taken by college students aiming to satisfy the basic prerequisites necessary for acceptance into medical schools. These requirements include one year of biology coursework including lab coursework , two years of chemistry (both organic and inorganic) one year of physics coursework, one year of mathematics coursework as well as one year of English coursework. The only remaining requirement for the aspiring medical student, aside from completing your undergraduate degree, is to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Thus, an undergraduate student could be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Art History and still be considered a “pre-med” student. Another obvious, yet important, component for admission in to a medical school is the student’s GPA. However, a factor that is often overlooked is that it is not the student’s overall GPA, but their science GPA, that is critical for admission into medical school. Therefore, undergraduate students should work hard in all their classes, especially so in science classes. With knowledge of the “pre-med” academic track and the important aspect of the GPA, a current or

by Christopher Wong ThinkTank Learning Education Consultant

prospective undergraduate student can then make an informed decision in declaring a major. Oftentimes, students choose majors such as Molecular Cell Development or Biochemistry because they sound impressive and relevant to medicine. However, it is important to take into account that these majors offer no advantage in admission to medical school, yet they require a rigorous course load heavy in the sciences, where maintaining a good GPA can become an uphill battle. According to the Harvard Medical School Admissions website, “No preference is given to applicants who have majored in science over those who have majored in other disciplines. A study at Harvard Medical School has shown that students are successful in their medical studies regardless of undergraduate concentration, providing that they have had adequate science preparation. Students are urged to strive not for specialized training but for a balanced and liberal education.” Therefore, it is in no way advantageous to undertake a “difficult” major over an “easier” major. A current or prospective undergraduate student with the intention of attending medical school should choose any major that they have an interest in. It is found that usually when students are learning about a topic that they have a strong passion in, they will do well academically. With this in mind, students should break away from the preconceived notion that they must choose a major in the hard sciences in order to be a competitive medical school applicant in the future. Instead, a student should choose a major in which they can achieve academic success as well as a strong genuine interest. With a strong MCAT score, strong undergraduate science GPA, and success in pre-med courses, any student can become a competitive medical school applicant. 9

Your Options Once You’re In─Studying Abroad in College â–

S

By Robbin Jang

drawbacks that you will have to be careful to avoid. The first one most people think of is the cost. Certain programs can cost more than a normal semester at your home university. Yet many others, especially those outside of Europe, actually cost less. Furthermore, most financial aid is applicable towards study abroad. Each case is different, but the cost should be the first issue you look at when considering different programs. The transfer of credit is the second major issue. If you choose a program affiliated with or sponsored by your university, the credit should transfer. Otherwise, you may have to petition your home university for the credits to transfer. It is important to sit down with a counselor beforehand to determine which classes may or may not transfer, and what they will count towards. Unfortunately, students in the sciences and engineering will have a more difficult time finding programs that fulfill their major requirements, as there are more programs that offer language and humanities courses than science and engineering courses. A way around this is to save your language or general education requirements until you study abroad, as it is easier to find programs what will fulfill these requirements. Other cons of studying abroad are unique to each person. Some people will have a harder time leaving behind friends and loved ones then others, while for others there may be health considerations that make travelling difficult. The bottom line though is that with the vast number of programs out there, almost every college student can find a program that will work for them, as long as they are willing and able to pack up and leave home. For those with the courage to go to another country and make an effort to immerse themselves, personal growth and an incredible experience await. Robbin Jang is a consultant with the China division of ThinkTank Learning. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Global Development Studies, and spent a semester studying abroad in Argentina.

tudying abroad is one of the most exciting opportunities a college student has during their time at school. There are innumerable programs out there, from Latin America to Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. You can go to study history, the sciences, immerse yourself in the language, or even go beyond the classroom and conduct field studies. The decision of whether to study abroad is one every student should consider, as the rewards of such an experience can be tremendous. Of course, there are certain obstacles and potential problems studying abroad can present, and they should be accounted for as one decides whether or not to study abroad. The greatest benefit of studying abroad is that it is a chance for tremendous personal growth. A student living in a foreign country becomes a full-time learner, as every person they meet, food they try, and place they go is new. Oftentimes your study abroad peers will come from schools across the country, presenting a chance to get to know Americans from many different walks of life. And of course there are the locals and all that can be learned from them. Immersing yourself in their culture is an experience no classroom can replicate, as you can learn a new language and gain a new perspective as you come to understand a different way of life. It is also a chance to educate the locals of the country, as you will be a representative of a culture that they know very little about. Studying abroad provides the chance to exchange knowledge and break down stereotypes in ways no other experience can. In addition to increased knowledge and new perspectives, many students come away from their time abroad with an increased self-confidence after making it through life in another country.

Marian You

E-Mail: TV@ttlearning.com

(Testimony) Haley Chen / Cupertino High 11th grade / Score 2330 It all began the June prior to my Junior year. I sat down one fine summer morning, ignorant and complacent, and took a diagnostic SAT. When I saw my results, I was shocked. I got about 1900, a score 300 points below my target goal. Of course, I comforted myself by justifying that I had not yet prepared – that with a little practice, the scores would come. I diligently went through book after book, and took one test after another. However, as June rolled into July, and July gave way to August, my prior confidence gradually eroded. After all my efforts, I felt as if I had reached a plateau. I was stuck in the mires of a 2100, a good score yes, but …not good enough. But then, my training at TTLearning began. Having spent the first half of summer learning about the SATs, I felt like a veteran. I thought I knew all there was to know and that the class would simply repeat everything I had already learned. However, to my relief, I was completely wrong. I soon realized that, while one could “train” for the SATs on his or her own, nothing could substitute for the trained feedback and coaching, critical elements that TTLearning excelled in. Although the SATs can be rough, dry, and trying, the teachers at TTLearning managed to pique my interest with enthusiasm and creativity. Most importantly, after two months at TTLearning, I came away with a 2330, a score far exceeding my original expectations. Believe it or not, the SATs is a test that can be mastered, and TTLearning definitely helped me achieve my gol.

Junda Liu / Monta Vista High 12th grade / Score 2310 ThinkTank’s SAT class drilled and coached me into receiving a 2310 on my SAT I. The many detailed practice tests prepared me for the real exam, and the instructors were always there to answer questions. The SAT program targeted my weaknesses and enriched my strengths, which ultimately resulted in my impressive score.

Ariel Wang / Lynbrook High 11th Grade / Scored 2310 The preparation afforded by ThinkThank’s classes really helped simulate an actual testing experience, making it less of an issue when the day eventually came. The teachers definitely helped clear up issues I had with grammar and paying attention to key words. Getting feedback on my essays was also something I would never have gotten on my own, and I learned to make connections clearer and not to use cliché examples as a result. Overall ThinkTank was able to motivate me to practice to an extent I never would have on my own and I exceeded my own expectation. 22

Tax Planning and Projection for 2010 Y

ou should have now started your tax planning for 2010. Do not wait until the end of 2010 to start your planning for the year. It will limit your options too much. Any good tax plan starts with a tax projection. This is a "what if" analysis, taking your current situation and inserting different scenarios to see how they will affect your projected tax liability. There are just too many traps in the tax codes - phase outs and limitations. A good tax projection includes Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) planning. As with many tax matters these days, much depends on whether you are subject to the dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax . The AMT is a tax that eliminates many deductions and credits for people who would otherwise pay less tax because their income allows them to take advantage of certain deductions and credits provided under tax laws. The AMT was initially aimed at a very small number of upper income taxpayers, but it has been ensnaring an increasing number of middle-income people because it is not adjusted for inflation. People affected by the AMT have to bring back into their income any taxes that are itemized such as state income, real estate and local taxes as well as items such as employee expenses and dependents exemptions. As a result, if you are subject to AMT, making early tax payments won’t be beneficial. Evaluating how much tax liability you need to plan away is by itself an incentive for you to contemplate

more advanced tax strategies. Large numbers will require more sophisticated planning. You are allowed to use whatever is available under the tax laws to minimize your tax situation. That is why Congress put these rules in place. They are incentives for you to act in certain ways. For example, we are allowed deductions for our homes (interest and property taxes) because Congress wants us to invest in personal residences, and we are allowed Investment Tax Credits for investing in certain items to encourage the purchase of these items (such as energy saving devices). To take advantages of these types of incentives is the very behavior that Congress intended. Tax planning should be a part of your investment and estate plan, because taxes are usually your largest expense. Taxes are normally more than your car payment and house payment combined. Where and when do you start? You may need to engage a competent tax professional and financial advisor. Perhaps, the best time to do the tax projection or planning is in the beginning of the fourth quarter of any fiscal year. .
