SELF-WORTH, CONFIDENCE & GRATITUDE
Discover ways to maximize your health by improving your self-worth and confidence! By EUDENE HARRY MD
H
|
ave you ever stopped to consider how your thoughts about yourself contribute to your health and well-being? Study after study tells us that feeling valued and appreciated helps us to be more motivated, productive, and enhance our sense of well-being. Recent research points out that the impact of diminished self-worth is even more detrimental to our health as we get older. It seems that when we are already carrying the stress of negative self-talk, any additional stress that enters our lives can cause cortisol, one of our major stress hormones, to elevate significantly. Elevated cortisol levels have been linked with an increased risk for a variety of chronic conditions such as diabetes, elevated blood pressure, and even mood disorders. On the other hand, other studies found that when we have truly accepted and embraced who we are, we are better able to handle external criticisms, our moods are better, and we cope more effectively with stress. So,
Physician, Medical Lifestyle Expert, Author, & Speaker
what are some of the ways that diminished selfworth can impact your health and what can you do to help counteract this stressor? Your thoughts can be your biggest support system, or they can be your greatest saboteur. They are with you 24 hours a day and you cannot physically escape them. Feeling constantly attacked or belittled, whether it comes from the outside or from your own thoughts, can trigger a series of responses that have far reaching consequences. You can over engage your stress system, which can lead to signs of chronic stress such as insomnia, poor dietary choices, weight gain, and even foggy thinking. All of these symptoms can add fuel to the health fire. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase inflammation, contribute to weight gain, and increase the risk of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease. It has been noted that when we are tired and stressed, we tend to reach for foods that are high in sugars and refined carbohydrates, thus depriving ourselves of fiber and nutrients
| drharrymd.com
of whole grains. This is in addition to the inflammation and weight gain these foods can cause. So how do we combat these thoughts? First, we need to be aware and acknowledge these thoughts when they show up. It’s important to remember that many times these thoughts are not true. For example, saying, “I always fail at everything I try,” is not a true statement. Remind yourself of the things you did master. You need to replace the negative thoughts with ones that are positive, but true. Fight back by getting active. Go for a brisk walk or take your bicycle out for a spin. Exercise floods the brain with chemicals that can actually enhance your moods, allow you to think more clearly, and increase your energy levels. Start and end the day with the things that brought you comfort, joy, and gratitude that day. Write it down and really feel the gratitude in each statement.

Fast forward to present day and it seems as if Angelina is entering yet another stage in her roller coaster of a life. Pitt and Jolie divorced in 2016, after only two years of marriage, but more than 10 years of dating. With six children together (three adopted and three biological), the split hasn’t been easy, but Jolie claims she’s trying to make it work.
“We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing . . . [My children are] not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some…from life, from things in life,” Jolie shares. It’s certainly been a significant, and at times difficult, turning point, but like always, Jolie remains resilient and poised. She has continued to act, and even direct, with her most recent highlight being First They Killed My Father (2017), the screen adaptation of the earlier mentioned memoir by Ung. She returned to Cambodia to shoot the production, involving over 3,500 local peoples in it. She hired a Cambodian
filmmaker, Rithy Panh, to lead the project and had her son, Maddox, as an executive producer on set. Ung was also greatly involved, making it an authentic, emotional tribute to the country and its traumatic past. It was nominated for a Golden Globe and was critically well-received. Her newest movie, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is coming out this month, on the 18th, which marks her return wto acting after a three-year hiatus. Her last, Kung Fu Panda 3, came out in 2016. She’s definitely back on track as she’s set to star in The One and Only Ivan and Come Away in 2020. Not stopping there, she’s also said to be working on two films without release dates yet, Eternals, and Those Who Wish Me Dead. Angelina Jolie has come a long way since her daredevil, punk days. She’s now so much more than what the media has painted her as. Yes, she is still a badass and a sex symbol and an action queen. But she is also a wonderful mother, a graceful human being, and a selfless humanitarian who has found joy in helping those less fortunate. It’s safe to say that Jolie is prepared for whatever life throws at her next. T HI NKMAGAZI NES.COM

HOORAY!
Did you know that 100 million people in the U.S. live with chronic pain, 60 million are affected by a sleep disorder, and 39% of Americans are more anxious in 2018 than in 2017? Additionally, in the recent decade, life expectancy in the U.S. has tumbled due to addiction problems associated with prescription medication and opioid overdose. Not all is gloomy and glum, though. Read on to find out how to significantly lower the risks of these ailments.
R
ecently, conscious consumers have been moving away from prescription pills to plant-based medicinal therapy. This momentum is currently driven by the healing power and effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD), found abundantly in industrial hemp. As a medical physician, principal research investigator, and an advocate for holistic and preventative medicine, no one is more thrilled about this than yours truly. Though hemp has been used for millennia in textiles, medicine, and food, globally; hemp farming in the U.S. was banned in the 1970s with the passage of the “Controlled Substances Act” in which hemp was included as a “Schedule 1 drug” along with marijuana because both had contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that induces the marijuana “high”. “The Hemp Farming Act” of 2018 removed the hemp plant, its seeds, and derivatives from the “Controlled Substances Act”, making hemp a legal agricultural crop again. Unlike marijuana, hemp is abundant in CBD and contains less than 0.3% THC and does not make you high when consumed as a dietary supplement. Over a hundred unique naturally occurring compounds called phytocannabinoids, including CBD, have been identified in hemp, and consumers are reporting numerous health benefits from taking CBD in the form of Full Spectrum Hemp Extract Oil (CBD, other phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids), or CBD Oil (CBD in its purest form).

As early as the 1980s, researcher Dr. Raphael Mechoulam had demonstrated the effectiveness of CBD therapy in seizure patients. In 2015, I came across Full Spectrum Hemp Extract oil while searching for a remedy for Zoster neuralgia, but found minimal published research on CBD. Fast forward to 2019, scientific research has demonstrated preliminary efficacy for a range of physical and mental health care problems and has attracted significant research interest due to CBD antiinflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-necrotic protective effects in humans and animals, as well as displaying a favorable safety and tolerability profile. In fact, in June of 2018, Epidiolex (CBD at high dosage) was approved by the FDA for treatment of rare seizure disorders. As a nutritional supplement, CBD is reported by consumers to predominantly relieve pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and migraine headaches. Many people use Full Spectrum Hemp Extract oil on their skin to soothe pain and skin disorders (rosacea, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, mosquito bites, sunburns). If you decide to try Full Spectrum Hemp Extract or CBD oil, buy products with legitimate third-party verification for potency and purity. Your body deserves a chance to naturally heal with CBD, but it should never be put in harm’s way. Lastly, scientific research is still lagging behind consumers’ testimonials and we still do not clearly understand CBD’s pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, so consult with your healthcare provider if you are on prescription medications before taking CBD.

Journey to a legendary landmark for your first scare: Bran Castle. This Transylvania castle has the reputation of being “Dracula’s Castle,” as it closely resembles the castle mentioned in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula. The novel’s terrifying main character, Count Dracula, is loosely based on an actual real life person, Vlad The Impaler. Vlad, who also went by the name Vlad III Dracula, was the voivode, or ruler of Wallachia, Romania three times during the 15th century. He earned the nickname “The Impaler” due to his cruel way of punishing his enemies, which involved impaling them on stakes. Vlad The Impaler is said to have visited Bran Castle multiple times, although there is no hard proof of it.
While you’re at Bran Castle, you can climb up its towers, and check out rooms that include untouched ancient décor. There’s also displays on Romanian vampire tales and Vlad The Impaler to uncover. bran-castle.com Your second freakish attraction will be the infamous Hoia-Baciu Forest. Be aware that this forest is not for the lighthearted. Tons of mysterious happenings have occurred here, such as UFO sightings, unexplained disappearances, and reports of ghosts and other creatures. In fact, the forest is named after a shepherd who disappeared after entering it with his 200 sheep. No one ever saw him again. You can visit Romania’s “Bermuda Triangle”
on your own, but it’s recommended you go with a group. Book a tour with The Hoia-Baciu Project. They offer night tours, day tours, and more to customize your terrifying trip! hoiabaciu. wixsite.com Take another trip through some uncanny natural scenes at the Bucegi Mountains. The stunning mountains are home to a ton of conspiracy theories thanks to their strange natural rock formation, the “Mountain Sphinx,” or the “Romanian Sphinx.” It has an odd resemblance to the Egyptian Sphinx of Giza, and many believe it acts as a portal to another dimension, as well as a meeting ground for aliens. Others report that pilgrims gather here every November 28 to take advantage of the “healing” energy that surrounds the formation, in what they call an “energetic pyramid.” See for yourself if you feel any bizarre energy while here! If you want to find out more about Vlad The Impaler, aka Dracula, head over to Poenari Castle,
which he used as a fortress during most of his campaigns. To reach the impenetrable fortress, you have to climb up 1,480 steps, and you can stop along
enough, it’s said that Vlad The Impaler’s wife’s spirit still lurks around the grounds. Way back in the 15th century, as the fortress was being overtaken by the Turks, Vlad’s first wife, Jusztina Szilagyi of Moldavia, flung herself off of the towers and into the Arges River below, where she perished. She exclaimed that she would rather “rot and be eaten alive by fish than be a captive of the Turks.” Some report seeing flashing lights and hearing abnormal noises in the tower where she supposedly leapt off of. At this point, it’s pretty obvious that Romania has some pretty eerie sites, and you can visit yet another one in the Boldu-Creteasca Forest: The Romanian Sphynx Witches’ Pond. This algae-covered pond is said to be the preferred place the way to stare at the unsettling decorations that where Romanian witches gather to perform their surround them. Impaled bloody mannequins stare rituals, especially during the Saznienele celebration at you from their stakes, and nooses and pillories in June. dehydration. Another unexplained phenomenon is the pond’s unchanging shape. No matter the season or the amount of rainfall, the pond’s size stays the same, despite locals being unable to find a direct source of where the water is coming from. Furthermore, this pond is also said to be worthy of chills due to its connection to Vlad The Impaler. He was supposedly decapitated here in 1476, and some say they’ve seen his ghost wandering the forest. Make one last frightening trip to a truly haunted location: Banffy Castle. This creepy castle was built between 1437 and 1543 for the Banffy family, a famous political Romanian family. They continued to live in the impressive castle until 1944, when they had to flee from Nazis that overtook the area. The troops took over the vacant castle and 40

turned it into a military hospital. Today, many report hearing voices and seeing the shadows of the soldiers. In fact, the tales of Banffy Castle became so notorious that the team of Ghost Hunters International actually filmed here during their first season! Drop in to walk the halls yourself, and don’t be surprised if you hear a whisper or two. By now, all of these scares must have you starving! Don’t worry, the hair-raising excursions have come to an end. Grab dinner at one of Bucharest’s finest restaurants: Kane Seasonal Bistro. This highly-rated restaurant emphasizes freshness and locally-sourced ingredients. Every dish served must have ingredients sourced from farmers the chefs personally know, and the produce must be seasonal. By adhering to these guidelines, Kane is
able to deliver some of the purest, great-tasting food around. Enjoy traditional Romanian plates with a modern twist, like duck breast with onion and Kanafeh Egg. kane-restaurant.com Nightlife in Bucharest is not to be missed as this city is known for its energetic nightlife! Get up and dance at Bamboo Club, the city’s most famous nightclub. A lot of wealthy locals come here to dance, socialize, and enjoy the live shows! DJs spin mostly house music here. If you need to take a break from all of the partying, you can relax on the outside terrace or take a dip in the pool. bambooclub.ro To switch up the vibe, end your night at Linea Closer to the Moon. everything from the bar’s cosmic background illustration to its igloos that it sets up in the winter. Yes, you read that right: igloos! To allow diners to eat on the rooftop in the cold winter months, the restaurant/bar sets up igloos for each table. Kick back as you take in the panoramic views and sip on yummy cocktails. linea.life On your next day in Romania, you’ll be able to appreciate some of the country’s other well-known marvels. The first attraction on your itinerary is the Salina Turda—the largest salt mine museum in the world. It’s located in a city in Transylvania called Turda, and it features galleries, the history of the mine, and even an underground sci-fi theme park! The modern art theme park is the museum’s most popular feature as it’s magnificently located about 393 feet below the surface of the Earth. It has an amphitheater, a Ferris wheel, a bowling alley,
mini-golf, a sports field, spa treatments, and even a lake where you can rent boats. And remember, this is all located underground in one of the oldest salt mines in the world! Talk about crossing something off of your bucket list! salinaturda.eu Also in Transylvania are the towns of Brașov and Râșnov, where you will be able to see Hollywood-esque signs donning their names. It would be a random find if it weren’t for the fact that both towns have been frequently used as sets for recognized films. Countless vampire movies have been filmed here, as well as non-vampire productions such as Cold Mountain (2003), and Youth Without Youth (2007). Take time to explore a bit more of Brașov, the second largest city in the country. Brașov is treasured due to its medieval architecture and design, and features lots of historical highlights to
see. Check out The Black Church, the city’s most iconic landmark, and the biggest Gothic church between Istanbul and Vienna. As you walk through the architectural wonder, you’ll come across Romanian artifacts such as a mechanical organ and Oriental carpets. For your last adventure, take the opportunity to go hiking deep in the nearby Piatra Craiului National Park. Romania has the largest population of brown bears in Europe and you can be sure to spot a few here! The 19,000-acre park also features friendlier animals like sheep and cows, and it’s not uncommon for their shepherds to offer visitors cheese and other dairy products out of kindness. Make sure to trek through all of the unique trails the park has to offer, and don’t forget to snap a pic with the limestone ridge—it’s the most prominent aspect of the park due to its size.

: SAVOR POSITIVELY POSITANO What better place is there to mirror the glamour and beauty of Italy’s Amalfi Coast than Surfside, Miami? Le Sirenuse, located inside the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, is the sister restaurant of the Michelin-starred La Sponda, which resides in Positano, Italy. Gorgeous tropical plants, vaulted wooden ceilings, touches of glimmering gold and soothing blues, and of course, the white-jacketed, gold epaulet-donning waiters all make up the elegant, stunning interior of the restaurant. As I sat down at my table alongside my guest, I took a couple of moments to bask in the loveliness of it all before opening up the menu.

MERMOLIA’S MASTERPIECES Chef de Cuisine Antonio Mermolia has done a fantastic job at representing the Amalfi Coast and Naples through his culinary creations. There were so many ambrosial options that I struggled with what to choose! However, being a cheese lover, I chose La Caprese Calda. This easy-on-the-eyes dish comes served warm with buffalo mozzarella, grape tomato confit, oregano, and basil. The plentiful scoop of rich buffalo mozzarella melted in my mouth, and the juicy grape tomatoes sealed the deal. Next up was my pasta dish, The Raviolo Margherita. The charcoal house-made ravioli came garnished with pieces of basil, stuffed with fresh buffalo mozzarella, and surrounded by quality San Marzano tomato sauce. The harmony between the creamy cheese and the tomato sauce sent my taste buds into bliss—I couldn’t get enough of this masterful, uniquely-made ravioli dish!
TAKE ME TO THE SEA For the main course, I ordered Merluzzo Cileno con Patata al Limone e Asparagi: Chilean seabass, smashed potatoes, asparagus, and Limoncello. The Chilean seabass was soft and tender, but had a light crisp on top, along with a small dollop of Limoncello sauce. A honey-like glaze was drizzled in a circle around the fish; I really enjoyed the honeyed combination of the glaze and the seabass. Beneath the fish was a mound of smooth garlic smashed potatoes, a very complementary side dish. All in all, Le Sirenuse is a grand, golden place to dine. If you’ve been to Italy, welcome back. If you have not, enjoy this peek into Positano. You won’t regret it!

PUMPKIN HARVEST
When my guest and I arrived at Via Emilia Garden, we were welcomed by the hostess and were seated at our table. Our waiter promptly set a glass of water for each of us, bread, and menus. We couldn’t wait to dig in to their simple but impressive Carpaccio di Polopo, a carpaccio with thinly sliced octopus along with arugula, olive oil, and cherry tomatoes. Next, we had the Capellacci di Zucca al Burro e Salvia, which is hand-rolled and stuffed pasta filled with pumpkin, then tossed with butter and sage. It tasted like fall with the warm smooth pumpkin texture and the earthy savor of the butter and sage sauce. The chef exceeded my expectations and I can safely say this is now my favorite pasta dish!
DOUBLE COFFEE-INE
Once we finished our rich-flavored meal, we were ready to glance through their dessert menu, which offers many desserts such as Crema della Nona, a caramelized custard cream, and Crostata di Fragole, a homemade strawberry tarte. It was a difficult decision to make since we really enjoy dessert, but we opted for the traditional Tiramisu, which consists of layers mostly of cream, along with coffee-soaked Savoiardi ladyfingers. We accompanied this creamy dessert with a cup of cappuccino, which satisfied our sweet cravings. We will definitely be coming back to try more dishes and more desserts! T HI NKMAGAZI NES.COM

This apothecary-style watering hole aims to take you back to a time when alcohol was medicinal. Their cocktails come mixed with elixirs, herbs, kombucha, fruits, natural juices, and more—giving it a more “healthy” spin than your typical rum and coke, or vodka water lime. They also have craft beer, and a full wine and liquor menu, if that’s more your thing. Another perk? Live entertainment plays at the bar quite often, with a mix of jazz acts, DJs, and bands!

Local craft beer selections and fun cocktails like “Peach, Don’t Kill My Vibe” make up the drinks menu, and yummy bar bites like southwest yucca fries and crab cake burgers are featured on the eats menu. egan Rapinoe was born on July 5th, 1985 in Redding, California. She first got into school athletics when she attended Foothill High School. Up until then, Megan spent most of her life being coached by her father, Jim. Megan was clearly very good at soccer as she was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American as a junior and senior. She was also named to McDonald’s All-American Girls High School Soccer West Team in 2004.

Rapinoe After high school, Megan played for Elk Grove United in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Megan got a full scholarship to attend the University of Portland and became a member of the Pilots. She ranked 5th in school history in total points (43) in her freshman year. Out of the 15 goals she scored, 7 of them were game-winning goals. Her 2006 and 2007 seasons were each cut short due to 2 separate torn ACLs. When she returned in 2008, she played all 22 games and led them to a record of 20-2. That season she had 5 goals and 13 assists.
Rapinoe burst onto the international scene in 2011 at the Women’s World Cup. She scored 4 goals and had 2 assists as the United States finished 3rd. Next up was the 2012 Olympics. There, she continued her amazing play by scoring 8 goals and assisting on 12 points as Team USA took the gold medal. The 2015 and 2019 were the next 2 major events and Rapinoe led the United States to victory in both World Cups. The United States became the second team to repeat as champion (The first being in Germany 2003/2007).

resurface after the New Year, keeping an eye out for new listings can give you a beautiful new home before the holidays. Make the Holidays Work for You
WHY FALL MAY BE THE BEST TIME TO BUY A HOME If you still think that the best time to buy a home is either spring or summer, you might miss out on what makes buying a home in fall such a great idea. While it is true that the buying frenzy is usually during spring and summer, taking advantage of the many holidays during fall can finally land you your dream home. 64

Are you aware that October is the best month for snagging home buying deals? This is backed by RealtyTrac’s data over a period of 15 years and 32 million home sales during that time period. More so, their data showed that those who purchased homes in October ended up paying 2.6% less than the estimated market value for the homes they purchased. That’s thousands upon thousands of savings! For example, a home worth $500,000 during the fall season is approximately 2.6% lower than other months, which may potentially save you $13,000. You can use that $13,000 to purchase amazing appliances, take a vacation, or anything else you desire. In early fall, homes have typically averaged 10.8% lower than their market value estimates. That’s beyond a good deal! It’s a steal! Take Advantage of Less Competition For those with kids, the start of fall is usually a very busy time as people get back to their daily lives after all the fun of summer. Those who were home hunting in spring and summer have either grown weary or already bought homes. Though it is true that sellers also typically drop out of the market during fall and usually
The holidays are just around the corner come fall, and people are either hurrying to sell so they can move to another home, or they’ve already taken a timeout from buying as they’re busy for the holidays. This factor can come in handy when you spot a new listing. Keep in mind that the owner would want to vacate their old home as soon as a deal is finalized. Your Real Estate Broker Will Have More Time for You Because there are generally less listings and less buyers in fall, your real estate broker will be able to have more time to show you more homes that fit what you are looking for. Plus, they will answer all questions you may have and assist you with all your real estate needs to make it a smooth and “on time closing”! Bargain Home Improvement Season Fall is generally the time of the year when appliances are at their most affordable, and new models are being launched. This is also the best time to purchase cookware, patio furniture, TVs, and sometimes, pay for home improvement services. Even though these are all great reasons why fall is the best time to buy a home, the year-end tax credits might be one of the best incentives for you. It is possible that you’ll be able to score quite a significant tax deduction come tax season.
