riana Grande had tears streaming down her face on June 4th, 2017 as she struck a fierce pose on stage. She was delivering a beautiful, heartwarming rendition of “Over the Rainbow” to close up One Love Manchester, a benefit concert for the victims and families affected by the Manchester attack. Grande had picked this particular song for a reason: “[My grandpa] would always tell me to sing [the song] in my concerts. He would always say, ‘You know what you should end with? “Over the Rainbow.”’ When I was getting ready to do it, I was thinking about him and I felt his presence so heavily around me. He was the person I was closest to in my life.” The crowd resonated with the classic, weeping with Ari and singing along as loud as they could. The initial tragedy had occurred just 13 days before, on May 22nd, during Grande’s Manchester, U.K. show for her Dangerous Woman Tour. It was at the Manchester Arena where chaos struck as a suicide bomber detonated a bomb, causing 22 fatalities and 116 injuries. It had transpired at the very end of Grande’s show, and she was rushed backstage and out of the arena safely, although others weren’t so lucky. Ariana was devastated, and began to experience survivor’s guilt, piling much of the blame onto herself. After the horrible attack, she took to Twitter to express her devastation: “Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry. I don’t have words.” She immediately suspended her tour and flew back home to Boca Raton, FL where she received support from loved ones. She wasn’t able to stay there for long before an overwhelming sense of responsibility came over her. “If I don’t do something, these people died in vain,” she said. Ari worked closely with manager Scooter Braun to organize One Love

Manchester, which ended up raising over $12 million for the families and victims who had been affected. 50,000 people showed up to the concert, where Grande took the stage along with other big stars like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber. She also made a point to visit some of the victims in the hospital, and meet with families of the deceased. Grande was able to finish the last of her Dangerous Woman Tour, before finally flying back home. It was then that everything hit her. “We pushed through and we got home, and once things slowed down, everyone started to really feel it,” she admits, “…We were riding this adrenaline wave and being strong with each other. Once we got home, we were like, ‘Whew. Now the real work begins,’ and I’m sobbing.” Ariana had always dealt with anxiety in her life, but not like this. Not only did her anxious feelings increase, but she also developed PTSD due to the traumatizing events. She avoided interviews, went to therapy, and stayed out of the public eye as much as she could to prioritize her mental health. Her only appearances last year were charity-related, when she performed at the Charlottesville, VA concert, and the March for Our Lives concert, which benefitted the Parkland shooting victims. This year on April 20th, Ariana made her official comeback as she proclaimed she had “no tears left to cry.” This is the first single off of her

upcoming work, Sweetener, which is set to release July 20th. This headstrong banger peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, and served perfectly as Ari’s comeback. The tempo remains positive and upbeat, allowing her to belt out those high notes she’s known for as she sings about resilience. Sweetener has also been prefaced by a second single featuring Nicki Minaj, “The Light is Coming,” which was put out on June 20th. It followed the same sort of theme as her first single, spreading nothing but good vibes as she sings, “The light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole.” “When you’re handed a challenge,” she says, “instead of sitting there and complaining about it, why not try to make something beautiful?” This has become her motto after bouncing back from a year of silence, and she thought it would be the perfect meaning to add behind her album title. She wanted to emphasize this message to her fans, because she believes you can always try to add something sweet to a bad situation. Ariana has always been a driven, determined person. From the very beginning, she was formulating plans to further her career, and striving to remain positive through the ups and downs of show business. Grande famously got her start in music through an acting career at first. She began performing in small local productions in her hometown, before landing a notable role in the Broadway production of 13 in 2008. Before she knew it, she was on a plane to New York with her mother, and her brother Frankie Grande, who is famous for being a YouTube personality, actor, and TV host. They lived in New York for a while while Ariana committed to the role, ultimately earning a National Youth Theatre Association Award. A year later, she got her big break playing Cat Valentine on Victorious, a Nickelodeon show about theater kids trying to make it big at a performing arts school. The show lasted a good run from 2010-2013, and even awarded Grande with a spinoff: Sam & Cat, another Nick show that featured Jennette McCurdy from iCarly. Although Ari enjoyed acting, her true passion lied in music, and she had been working on it behind the scenes the whole time. She recorded some Bubblegum Pop for the soundtrack of Victorious, and dropped a song called “Put Your Hearts Up.” However, this type of Pop wasn’t what Ariana wanted to pursue, and when her show was cancelled after only 35 episodes, she was unfazed. She took the opportunity to launch headfirst into singing, something she had been yearning to do since she was a child. “One minute I was Cat Valentine,” she remembers, “and the next I was singing R&B and making out with Mac Miller [in a music video].” Ariana was able to break onto the scene in a major way with her first hit single, “The Way,” featuring rapper Mac Miller. In the playful music video, the two are seen kissing, which sparked many dating rumors, and also contributed to the high amount of views on YouTube. However, at the time they were just friends, and both went on to date other celebrities. “The Way” to music fame was paved after this 2013 hit with Miller, which allowed her to take on a more mature sound. She was able to embody sultrier tones, making more R&B

inspired tracks that highlighted her vocal range. In August of the same year, her first album Yours Truly released, producing two more songs that made it into the Billboard Hot 100: “Baby I,” and “Right There,” featuring rapper Big Sean. Sean came back again to feature on Grande’s second work a year later, but this time as her boyfriend. He provided whispered lyrics on her most famous song to date: “Problem.” Also featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, it peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and sold 3.7 million digital songs. Her second studio album, My Everything, came out soon after, doing exceptionally well by shooting to #1 on the Billboard 200. This made her a household name with high-profile features. Sean lent a rap verse to another track, “Best Mistake,” while her collaboration with House DJ Zedd on “Break Free” hit #8 on the Hot 100. “Bang Bang” featuring strong verses from Jessie J and Nicki Minaj skyrocketed to #1, and a sexy “Love Me Harder” featuring The Weeknd was wildly popular too, reaching #8. In 2016, after a two-year break, she dropped Dangerous Woman, a much anticipated piece that capped off Grande’s successful year. Not only did she finally confirm her relationship with Mac Miller in August, but she began to organize her tour for Dangerous Woman, which had done exceedingly well by placing #2 on the Billboard 200. She also won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, causing her to run up onto the stage, overflowing with both nerves and happiness. “I just want to say that I’m so thankful for art, and I hope that whatever it is that I create in my life that you feel a little bit of light, and I hope that I can bring joy to you and make you feel unified and happy, and I love you,” Grande said, teary-eyed, as she addressed her fans. Her lead single from the record, “Dangerous Woman,” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #10, allowing her to leave her stamp in music history. In addition to her new “Artist of the Year” title, she became the first artist to have the lead single from all three of her first albums to debut in the Top 10. This year, after exiting a self-proclaimed “toxic relationship” with Mac Miller, she’s reportedly engaged to Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson. She’s also made several TV appearances, performing “no tears left to cry” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and at the Billboard Music Awards. Grande has certainly made a graceful comeback with her confident tracks, her incredible live performances, and of course, her impeccable singer impersonations on The Tonight Show. Stay tuned for an extra dose of sweetness with her new album on the 20th, this Dangerous Woman isn’t done just yet!

ven more unfortunate than a wilted banana left in a sweltering South Florida car is how the sun can damage our skin. Though we need sunshine (approximately 10 minutes per day) to synthesize Vitamin D we obtain through food, it’s easy to overdose on sun in the summer. While visiting your board-certified dermatologist should be your first line of defense, there are ways you can eat and drink to help fight the cellular damage sun provokes. Back to that Vitamin D — you’ll find it in foods you probably don’t consume on a regular basis, like Japanese mushrooms (not portobellos/buttons), oysters, sardines, beef liver, and cod liver oil. Some people find these sources a bit more realistic: wild salmon, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products (yogurt, kefir, cheese, etc.). You can also stock up on foods that fight inflammation (which the sun causes) by ingesting a lot of vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Aim for at least five servings of veggies (1 cup raw, ½ cup cooked) and two servings of fruit (1 cup) per day. You should consume 1-2 servings of nuts/seeds per day, but mind your portions to two tablespoons at a time (flaxseeds, almonds, chia seeds, walnuts, Brazilian nuts, and all other seeds have health merit!).

Remember that bright colors = vitamins = antioxidants (aka phytochemicals - beneficial chemicals unique to plants); so, eat that rainbow of fruit + veggies. Think strawberries (tannins), oranges (vitamin C), carrots (beta carotene), pomegranates (ellagic acid), kale, chard, radish, avocado (Vitamin E), red grapes (quercetin), tomatoes (lycopene), and watermelon (lycopene). Green tea is another major source of a specific phytochemical, EGCG, which may also block sun damage along with its tannic acid that can calm inflammation from the sun. Now is the time to enjoy the exquisite South Florida fruits (shop local!), which contain whopping amounts of Vitamin C — your collagen is your skin’s BFF. Another health risk during summer? Dehydration. Fruits and vegetables are mostly water, so consuming a lot of them can help prevent a loss of fluid. Water-based fruit and veggies, like watermelon, cucumbers, and grapes, are especially helpful here. Dietitians aren’t dermatologists, but we can certainly recommend you wear a hat, keep an aerosolized sunscreen in your car (you should reapply every few hours throughout the day since you’re exposed to the sun in your car!) and don’t omit your neck area when applying sunscreen.

A H-ALE OF A GOOD TIME 3305 S.E. 14th Ave., Fort Lauderdale

LauderAle Brewery & Tap Room was the first nano brewery to enter the brew game in Southeast Florida, and it continues to serve as a top destination for beer aficionados. They operate on a three vessel, electric fired, three-barrel brewery, where they produce over 80 barrels per month! There’s certainly no shortage of beers to choose from either; categories span IPAs, Light Brews, Medium Bodied, Dark Bodied, Sours, and even Guest Tap & Special Releases like Milk Stout. Their 1,500 sq. ft. tasting room and lounge is the perfect spot to socialize as you sip on your fine brewed beer, and the best part? LaudeAle is dog friendly!

AROUND THE CORNER… 1035 N. Miami Ave., Miami

thecornermiami.com Downtown Miami doesn’t have many bars that are more on the “chill” side of the spectrum. It usually consists of loud music, bottle service, and long lines for entry, but if you sneak around the corner, you’ll run into, well…The Corner. This bar switches up the scene by providing a dim-lit space for the night owl who wants to focus on the drinks rather than the party. It maintains a more upscale feel with “Classique” cocktails, and light bites like deviled eggs, croques monsieur sandwiches, and more. Their drinks contain fresh ingredients and are known for being creative masterpieces; try the La Tacubaya for a spicy delight!

BACK TO THE 80’S! 709 N.E. 79th St., Miami

theandersonmiami.com The Anderson Miami is a relatively new bar; it opened in 2016 with the help of The Bar Lab team from the Broken Shaker, and chef Alex Chang from The Vagabond Hotel. The whole theme is incredibly fun and retro, with red swanky booths, plaid wallpaper, a jukebox, and yellow chandeliers. Their cocktail menu has twists on “classics,” and their “Munchies” have some interesting additions from Chang like a Fried Banana Split, and a Pretzel Burger. If you have a desire to switch up the feel of the place, trek to the patio, where Caribbean-inspired décor and drinks take over!

GET YOUR KICKS @ 1306 1306 N. Miami Ave., Miami

The creators behind former music venue Grand Central have teamed up with Broken Shaker’s cocktail menu designer, Virginia King, to bring 1306 Miami to life. The bar serves classic artisan mixtures, but also has a “spirit-forward” menu, which is designed by King. The gray and black wallpaper on the walls as well as the plush seats and dim lighting make for an elegant setting to get your drink on. Head to the garden for a more serene environment, where pool tables, string lights, and candles on each wooden table make for an intimate atmosphere!

MARTINI MADNESS 2432 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale

bluemartinilounge.com

Blue Martini has many locations, but the one at the Galleria Mall is the place to be. Their happy hour is extremely popular with deals on specialty martinis, craft cocktails, and tapas. Monday-Saturday happy hour is from 2 pm-7 pm, and on Sundays 4 pm-7 pm. Fridays is “Toast to Fridays” with complimentary martini tastings from 5-7 and $8 Toast Vodka drinks all night. Live entertainment starts at 8 pm, and a DJ spins music until 3 am! The specials continue every day of the week with different promotions and events!

THE COCKTAIL NEXT DOOR 537 N.W. 1st Ave., Fort Lauderdale

drinknextdoor.com

Coffee shop by day, bar/lounge by night, Next Door at C&I is quite the magic act. When the coffee beans are put away to make space for alcohol, BREW Urban Café becomes Next Door, and the party begins. It looks much like a library inside, with shelves of books serving as a backdrop as the bartender whisks back and forth behind the bar. The ambience is calm and inviting; they claim that their drinks are made to act as your first “ice-breaker” when conversing with others. Their craft beers and artisan cocktails are always on rotation to keep things interesting, and they host local musical acts and events like open mic nights and art installations! the scoop on SoFlo LOCAL AUTHOR GOES FULL CIRCLE in Cocaine Cowboys Book

In Fort Lauderdale, Chuck Malkus is better known as a public relations firm owner with a soft spot for nonprofits. In the literary world, Malkus is making a name for himself with meticulously-researched true crime books based on South Florida characters. Five years after The Ultimate Ponzi, the story of disgraced Las Olas lawyer Scott Rothstein, Malkus returns with Full Circle, the story of two key figures on opposite sides of the 1980s cocaine trade: Drug Enforcement Agency special agent Kevin Pedersen and his best childhood friend, drug kingpin Alex DeCubas. The two were wrestling teammates in high school then grew apart when Pedersen became the hunter and DeCubas the prey. Then in 2015, the retired Pedersen accepted DeCubas, fresh out of federal prison, as his assistant to coach Palmetto Bay’s Westminster Christian High School boys’ wrestling team. “That’s where their stories came full circle,” Malkus said in an interview. “The book follows their paths, from Iowa to the DEA for Pedersen and from Cuba to the top of the drug trade for DeCubas.” Pedersen went on to form an exemplary career in law enforcement as he took down dozens of Scarface wannabes while DeCubas started out by stealing cocaine from street dealers then graduated to moving $500 million in Colombian cocaine in submarines and double-hull yachts. Eventually, he was arrested and served 10 of a 30-year sentence, courtesy of his flipping on fellow drug dealers. Fresh off the presses, Full Circle can be found in most bookstores and online.

CUBS WORLD SERIES HERO

Anthony Rizzo Moves On

Former World Series champ and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumnus Anthony Rizzo is selling his mansion in his native Parkland after buying a $4.57 million mansion in the hipper Las Olas area for Fort Lauderdale, real estate records show. Chicago Cubs first baseman Rizzo, 28, bought the stunning contemporary home on Coral Way as he is set to marry fiancée Emily Vakos after this season. It even comes with a professional batting cage! After getting the new digs for nearly half a million off its original asking price, Rizzo listed his Parkland place at 6747 NW 63rd Way, in the Pine Tree Estates, for $2.19 million. Records show he bought that house for $1.8 million in 2013. At the time, he had just agreed to a seven-year, $47 millioncontract with the Cubs, planting the seeds for his seven-hit World Series win with the historic Cubs in 2016.

DAVID CASSIDY

– For $1,500 A Night

For $1,500 a night, fans of David Cassidy can now live like the 1970s icon in the heart of Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Partridge Family star’s old house at 1600 South Ocean Drive near Port Everglades has found a second life as a luxury rental after it was bought for $2.6 million by two Maryland investors in a 2015 auction designed to keep Cassidy’s creditors at bay. “It’s more than just a rental,” said co-owner Thomas White. “We wanted something with RitzCarlton quality. It’s the best sheets, the best kitchen, the best of everything and a lot of David Cassidy memorabilia.” Cassidy, also known for chart-toppers like “I Think I Love You”, died in November after battling alcoholism. But his legacy, says White, lives on in the re-christened Casa de Mayan mansion.

“We’ve got tons of photos from David’s collection on the walls, things like a desk where he wrote music and his old cocktail table,” White said.

BE YOURSELF AGAIN YOU’RE NOT ALONE ON THIS ONE! MANY WOMEN ARE IN PAIN WITHOUT REALIZING WHAT THEY ARE SUFFERING FROM. DON’T IGNORE THE SIGNS YOUR BODY IS GIVING YOU.

By DR. SIMON WEISS PRESTIGE OBGYN ASSOCIATES

obgdoctor.com WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS AND ITS SYMPTOMS? Female pelvic pain is one of the most common gynecologic complaints and unfortunately, one that far too often goes untreated. Endometriosis is the growth of uterine tissue anywhere outside of the uterine cavity, pelvis, or liver. This symptom produces pelvic pain, which is often worse around the time of a woman’s menstrual cycle, during intercourse, with urination or bowel movements, excessive bleeding, infertility and other symptoms. Anyone who has pelvic pain, or any other gynecologic symptoms needs an evaluation and should consult a physician.

AT WHAT AGE ARE WOMEN TYPICALLY DIAGNOSED WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS? Women are usually diagnosed with endometriosis between the ages of 25 to 35, may be diagnosed younger.

HOW DOES AN OBSTETRICIAN MAKE A DIAGNOSIS OF ENDOMETRIOSIS THROUGH ROBOTIC SURGERY? A physician or obstetrician can make a diagnosis of endometriosis based on a patient’s medical history and a physical examination. Robotic surgery is important because a diagnosis can only be confirmed surgically through a tissue biopsy using this method. The definitive treatment for endometriosis is a hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus. Women who wish to retain their fertility, can be treated by having surgery to remove endometriosis and clean up the surrounding tissue. Both types of surgery can be performed robotically. Choosing robotic surgery significantly reduces recovery time for patients. There are many other gynecological problems that may be corrected using robotic surgery including uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts, to name a few.

WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT PREOPERATIVELY? An evaluation on the patient should include an extensive history; pelvic exam, pelvic ultrasound, and other tests, if necessary. The obstetrician will make the determination on whether or not the case can be done robotically. Then, the physician should explain the risks and benefits of the surgery.

WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT POSTOPERATIVELY? Most patients who have robotic surgery will stay in the hospital overnight and be able to go home the next day. Patients usually tell us that they don’t need pain medications within the first 2-3 days after surgery and many can even start driving the following week. Although each case is different, patients are typically able to return to work in 2-3 weeks after surgery with caution not to perform any heavy lifting. 96
