he earliest record of a New Year’s celebration dates back at least four (4) millennia to ancient Babylon. In most countries, the celebration begins on the evening of December 31st and continues into the wee hours of January 1st. It was also believed that the Babylonians were the first people to make the ever important New Year’s resolutions. In 1929, London bandleader, Guy Lombardo sang the song “Auld Land Syne”, which translates to “old long since” and means “time long by” at a New Year’s Eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and thus the tradition of singing the song was born. Finding a great place to celebrate New Year’s Eve is very important. While many of us keep a standing New Year’s date watching the ball drop on television wearing pajamas and a pair of fuzzy slippers, more than 1 in 4 Americans plan to travel to welcome in the New Year.

Listen to the chiming of Big Ben at midnight and be one of the more than 250,000 people to watch the annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks display that is launched from the foot of the London Eye and from rafts on the Thames. It is said that if you can see the London Eye, you will be able to see the 10-minute lightshow and fireworks display. Leading up to the midnight fireworks show, there are Cirque du Soleil performances, dance parties, live entertainers, and confetti explosions to keep visitors of all

ages entertained. Magic Kingdom hosts the Main Strret Electrical Parade and Epcot puts on a spectacular lights and laser show just before midnight. Don’t be afraid of over crowding, Disney World tends to host less people during the New Year than during peak vacation times.

PARIS Plan on visiting the “City of Light” for the New Year? The Champs-Elysees is the site of the largest gathering in Paris. The Eiffel Tower becomes the site of a spectacular fireworks display. Join the Parisians as you ring in the Nouvelle Annee (New Year) sipping champagne (what else?), exchanging cheek kisses while eating papillotes, chocolates wrapped in sparkly paper that crackles like a firecracker when opened. Wanting to do something a bit more active for New Year’s Eve, another popular celebration is going for an evening cruise. Head out and experience the majestic view of the entire city and witness the fireworks display out at sea.

MIAMI Want to stay close to home then head to Miami. The city of Miami Beach will be hosting a free New Year’s Eve fireworks display on the beach near 8th Street and Ocean Drive. Don’t feel left out by not attending the ball drop in Times Square. Head to the Bayfront Park Amphitheater for live bands and watch as the InterContinental Hotel drops the “Big Orange” at the stroke of midnight then stay for the fireworks; this is a fantastic, family friendly celebration, especially if your children are old enough to stay up until midnight (at least this once). For those looking to continue partying into the new year, check out some of Miami’s glitzy hotels that host exclusive events.

o party is complete without the perfect food. This season, make sure to serve foods that traditionally symbolize health, wealth and happiness. If you’d like to bring some good karma in the next 12 months, here are some fun ways to eat for luck on New Year’s Day.

As a centerpiece, prepare a beautiful display of a variety of grapes and eat twelve grapes at midnight. The Spanish and Portuguese eat twelve grapes as the clock chimes the twelve times for midnight, to symbolize the twelve months of the New Year. Incidentally, eating grapes this quickly is not as easy as it may sound. 44

Pigs are rotund, which represents prosperity (not, as it turns out, weight gain). They also “root forward” with their nose, which is supposed to symbolize continued progress. You can choose to eat your lucky pig any which way, including ham, sausage, whole roasted suckling pig, pork chops, tenderloin, bacon, pancetta, prosciutto, the list is endless... scales resemble coins, they travel in schools, which represent prosperity, and they swim forward, symbolizing progress. This option is good for everyone as it has the added benefit of complying with whatever New Year’s dietary resolutions you’ve likely made. Make noise and slurp soba noodles without breaking them. In Japan, long buckwheat noodles symbolize long life, and are therefore lucky—but only if you eat them without chewing or breaking them. So get your slurping technique down and have fun! want more money for the coming year? Everything from cabbage to kale to your Mesclun salad mix applies here. Be creative and find new ways to share and enjoy different varieties of greens. Whip up a hearty batch of Hoppin’ John. This dish of blackeyed peas and rice is customary for New Year’s Day in the American south, where black-eyed peas are considered auspicious based on their resemblance to coins. Cook some lentils. These beautiful little morsels represent coins. These coin-shaped legumes, in a variety of colors, are said to be lucky in Brazil and Italy and have been eaten for luck since the Roman times. Again, with money in mind, bake a coin into a delicious cake. The second Greek tradition, involves a special lemon-flavored cake called a vasilopita baked with a coin inside. The luck person that finds the coin gets a year of good luck. Make sure to take small bites, so you don’t chip your tooth. However you choose to make your holiday celebration special and exciting, try some of these old traditions and make them your own. Happy Holidays!

UNIQUE PARTY Ideas The holiday’s are about trying new things. This season why not try to celebrate with your guests in a new and exciting way. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and create new party ideas that will take your celebration to the next level. By Marla Horn Lazarus

HANUKKAH MENORAH LIGHTING CELEBRATION Search for your inner artist and be creative as you design your own menorah. This is a perfect family project as your guests bring their homemade menorahs to proudly light candles together. Involve the younger generation in the judging process, such as, give the “Golden Driedel” award for ingenuity and “Chocolate Coin” award for the most creative and the “Maccabee” award for unique craftsmanship. Keep the excitement going as you play the driedel game while taking a turn spinning the driedel as you play for gelt (chocolate coins). Hanukkah trivia game brings together all generations, both young and old. Have a latke and jelly-filled donut-eating contest to round out the festivities. As a party favor, give you guest handmade Hanukkah candles.

A VINTAGE CHRISTMAS Creating a vintage Christmas party will bring back cozy and warm feelings of Christmas past. Thoughtful details such as a custom welcome sign, gingerbread cookies strung throughout your home and don’t forget the mistletoe hanging in the doorway are perfect ways to greet your guests. Dress in attire from days gone by, maybe even the 1950’s, while you share favorite memories with your family and friends. Dust off the old crystal punch bowl as you float a refreshing sherbet wreath as well as serve soda in old fashion glass bottles. Retro comfort foods tie everything together and you proudly share family favorites. However, you may also want to serve those familiar dishes with a new and different twist. Whether its finger sandwiches (of course with crust cut off ) with yummy fillings, pigs in a blanket which is always a winner along with traditional fruitcake. A perfect party favor is to have the children bake and decorate holiday cookies with colored sugar and frosting.

DRESS LIKE YOUR RESOLUTION That’s right – express your resolution loud and clear – IN COSTUME! Invite your friends to come dressed as their New Year’s resolutions and have people figure out what they are supposed to be. Have fun with it! If your resolution is the standard “lose weight,” dress up in 80’s style work out gear for a fun play on exercise. Hi my name is…. Use name tags to identify each person by their resolution. Have all the resolution name tags spread out on the table and have people guess which name tag belongs to each person. “Hi my name is…..Eating only organic foods” – goes to the guy dressed as a leaf. Get it? It’s a great icebreaker and the scope of this is endless fun! Having a white elephant gift exchange will add pizzazz to any party. Ask your guests to bring a “strange and weird” wrapped item with a specified dollar value and give everyone a number. Start picking in numerical order and guests can steal a gift previously chosen or pick a new one. Players can keep swapping until there are no other eligible people to steal from. When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end. Sharing laughs with family and friends creates memories to last a lifetime.

Starr Events’ custom-designed events create a one of a kind experience. “Catering to your guests is key to having the perfect party. Make sure to plan around guests’ dietary restrictions, favorite cocktails and personal preferences to ensure a positive experience. I also like to put myself in my guests’ shoes to make sure their experiences in each room are cohesive. The way guests leave the party is just as important as how they enter – which is why I always end the party with something sweet. Parties are also about the energy created by the guests that come together for a celebration.

Cocktails

HOW MANY CALORIES ARE YOU DRINKING IN THAT FANCY GLASS AND HOW MANY OF THEM SHOULD YOU DRINK?

The 1st and most important fact that you need to know about alcoholic beverages is that they are NOT calorie free. All alcoholic beverages have calories. A Piña Colada can have as much as 475 calories per 12oz. glass, a dry martini has as little as 100 calories in the typical 5oz. glass but once flavored, a martini can have as much as 295 calories. Why this big difference? The mixing ingredients are to blame. Piña Coladas are mixed with sweet pineapple juice and coconut milk, which is high in fat, while dry martinis are mostly vodka with a twist of lemon. The flavored martinis usually have fruit juices, sweet liquors and other flavored ingredients like chocolate and syrup that have higher caloric values. Try to avoid regular soda, juices and syrup as mixers. As an alternative, use plain or flavored (calorie-free) seltzer water, club soda or diet sodas. Make sure you read the labels on pre-mixed drinks. You’ll be surprised! Popular drinks such as Bud Light Lime-A-Ritas have as many as 495 calories. Do not be deceived by the “Skinny Girl Margarita” as it has as many as 300 calories per serving. Calories per serving size must be considered too. A serving of beer is 12 oz. and the calorie content ranges from Bud Select55 and Miller64’ s 55-64 calories/ serving to Sierra Nevada, Duvel and Carlberg’s 330-200 calories/serving. A serving of wine is 5 oz. but non-sweet dry wines have fewer calories than sweet ones. For example, a 5oz. glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay

THINK HEALTH & BEAUTY

Most people serve twice the recommended serving size of wine and hard alcohol which doubles the calorie count per drink.

has around 150 calories, sweet Vermouth wines have 250 and port wines can have as much as 710 per 3 oz. glass. If you have three 8oz. glasses of Chardonnay in one night you drank ¾ of the bottle and about 750800 calories. Hard liquor serving size is 1 ½ oz. and the calorie content is about 100-160 for most of them including Vodka, Rum, Gin and Tequila. The other thing that you need to consider is the food that you eat when drinking at holiday dinner parties. We tend to eat the appetizers, entree, dessert and post-dinner hors d’oeuvres with cocktails. A good trick is to always eat before you drink, ideally a high protein low calories/carb meal at home before the celebration — 4 oz. skinless chicken breast or boiled shrimp with steamed vegetables. Once at the party, avoid the appetizers, eat the main dish offered but make sure to include plenty of vegetables on your plate and skip the desserts. Consider your drink your dessert. Keep in mind that when you consume alcoholic beverages and eat late at night, your body uses the calories from the alcohol as energy first — faster than the calories from food. Unless you stay active all night and burn those calories off, the excess will be converted and stored as fat. Alcohol consumption also increases the secretion of the hormone Cortisol that promotes fat storage in the body. So instead of drinking hearty beer, sweet wines and liquors, stick with clear liquors mixed with diet soda or water, lite beers and dry wines and limit your drink count to the fingers on one hand.

CHEAT SHEET: • Avoid eating high calorie treats such as pizza or chicken wings. • Prepare healthy snacks like raw vegetables, salsa or “pico de gallo” if eating late. • 12 oz. of Vodka and Red Bull has 366 calories but when mixed with sugar-free Red Bull it goes down to 268. • A Margarita has about 417 calories; a 1 ½ oz. Tequila shot only has 96. • Download the GetDrunkNotFat app onto your phone which has the details for each drink including calories, carbs, alcohol content, calories from alcohol and more.

While a glass of wine can certainly stand on its own, wine can also serve as a great base for cocktails. For the wine drinker, it can open a world of possibilities.

SANGRIA

W

hen one thinks of wine cocktails, Sangria is what first comes to mind. This punch is a great choice for entertaining, as it can be created a day in advance. By incorporating real fruit in the mix, Sangria enhances the aromas and flavors of the wine. Sangria consists of a red or white wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener (such as honey, sugar, or orange juice), and sometimes a liquor like a brandy. Be creative with the types of fruit to include, using fresh seasonal fruits. It should be refrigerated at least 4 hours (or overnight) before serving, to allow the fruit flavors to really infuse into the wine to provide more flavor. For white sangria, choose a crisp white wine such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Mix in orange liqueur, lemon juice, basil or mint leaves, and tropical fruits such as pineapple and cantaloupe, along with some ginger ale or sparkling water. For red sangria, you can choose any type of red wine; you may consider a Spanish Tempranillo or Rioja, or for a sweeter flavor, a Merlot or Malbec. Mix in orange juice or an orange liqueur (such as Cointreau), chopped fresh fruit (orange, apple, pineapple), and some sparkling water.

SPARKLING WINE COCK TAILS Looking for something a little more sophisticated that can be served by the glass? There are plenty of fantastic sparkling wine recipes. Keep in mind that you can use Champagne, but since the drink will be mixed, you may want to opt for a more budget friendly sparkling wine. The Mimosa is probably the most famous of all sparkling wine cocktails. It is simply the combination of orange juice and sparkling wine, served in a Champagne flute. Want to try a different twist on this drink? Opt for a Bellini, which is the combination of Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) and peach nectar or pureé. The black currant liqueur Crème de Cassis also makes a wonderful pairing with wine, and this cocktail is a very classic French aperitif. A Kir is the combination of Crème de Cassis with white wine (Sauvignon Blanc is a great choice). The drink becomes a Kir Royale when Champagne is substituted for the white wine. These cocktails are super elegant and delicious! While they are very common in France, they are not well known here. For any event that calls for Champagne, consider serving Kir Royale instead.

MULLED WINE Who would have ever thought that wine can be enjoyed hot? While many have never heard of this, mulled wine is a wine that has been warmed with added spices. This is a holiday tradition that is most often found in locales with colder temperatures. The recipe for mulled wine includes a bottle of a full-bodied red wine (such as a Syrah or Malbec). In a saucepan, the red wine is combined with cloves, cinnamon, sugar, and lemon rind. The wine is heated so that the spices infuse with the wine. It is hard to rival the enjoyment of a traditional bottle of wine. However, don’t be afraid to branch out and explore the other possibilities with wine cocktails. Whether it is a festive wine punch, a sparkling wine cocktail to celebrate an event, or even a mulled wine to keep warm on a cool day, all of these options will surely keep your guests in high spirits!

Celebrates “1989” Birthday in Miami with Pitbull, Dwayne Wade and Ricky Martin!

Queen of Pop Taylor Swift got a royal welcome to Miami recently as some of the biggest local names joined her on the American Airlines Arena stage! Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade presented Swift with a game jersey. Miami rapper Pitbull helped her sing Give Me Everything. And Ricky Martin got on his knees to worship to Swift’s Roxie Hart-style dress. What’s the reason for the celebrity appeal? Well, Swift was celebrating the first year anniversary of the release of her standout album, 1989. It takes some pretty serious Chutzpah to celebrate the “birthday” of your own album, but Swift’s 53 million Instagram followers didn’t seem to mind. Her birthday card to her own album scored 1.2 million likes!

ROY BLACK: If That Law Thing Doesn’t

Work Out, There’s Always Real Estate

Roy Black, the South Florida lawyer who has represented the likes of Justin Bieber, Palm Beach radio talker Rush Limbaugh and imprisoned polo mogul John Goodman, is trying to supplement his income with a real estate score in Miami Beach. Black and his wife, Real Housewives of Miami grande dame Lea Black, just listed their Star Island investment property for $18 million, according to real estate records. They bought the house at 45 Star Island Drive in 2011 for $7.1 million, according to MiamiDade County archives, and once considered moving in. Instead, the couple had the house for rent for $45,000 a month but now believes it’s time to cash it in. It’s a 10,000-square-foot behemoth with 10 bedrooms, 10 and a half bathrooms built in 1981 with 190 feet of waterfront and a dock. The inside might be slightly outdated since real estate websites are only running outdoors photos. The neighbors, however, might be worth knowing. There’s Sean Combs’ crib just to the west and Latin pop queen Gloria Estefan’s home just to the north. Estefan, by the way, is selling her other house on the island for a cool $40 million. The Blacks, who organize a major yearly celebrity charity gala in Miami Beach, live in Coral Gables. They also have a weekend home in Beverly Hills, Calif. “At one time we were considering a move to Star Island but we decided we enjoyed living in Coral Gables and in our historical house,” Roy Black said. “Our Mediterraneanstyle Coral Gables house was originally built for and by (Gables developers) George Merrick and Eunice Peacock, and is infused with the history of South Florida.”

VICTORIA’S SECRET INVASION:

Not that anybody minded. Sampaio’s beautiful face, and 24-year-old booty, are being used to sell all sorts of things to men and women and stinky teenagers these days. She’s modeling for the upcoming Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, where she won 2014 rookie of the year. She’s also walking the runway for Victoria’s Secret PINK, and she’s shilling for Axe body spray.
