PAYING IT

FORWARD JOSEPH GORMLEY DONATES HIS TIME AND TALENT TO WORTHY CAUSES

BY DAY, JOSEPH GORMLEY, Head Custodian at Westchester Elementary School in Coral Springs, is in charge of a school full of kids. It’s a pretty important job and Joseph loves it, but what no one knows is what he does in his free time that is helping to change the lives of others. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Joseph moved to South Florida 10 years ago, met his lovely wife, Erin and began the ride of his life. With a heart of gold and a gentle kindness down to his core, Joseph found a way to pay it forward and give back to those in need. Joseph’s love for painting was born in 2006 when Erin gave him a paint set as a Christmas gift and the rest is history. What started as a “wee” hobby soon turned into a passion when he discovered that he could use his artistic gift to help others. “I would say I definitely get my inspiration from my wife. She has always been very supportive of my art and helping all these charities. I am so proud to have her by my side…we are a great team,” Joseph says. Joseph states, “My greatest accomplishment was the very first painting I gave to charity. That’s the one that got it all started. It was for a young girl back home in Scotland. My wee painting helped raise $8,000 for her treatment. I was absolutely stunned at the amount and I just couldn’t believe it! I could never afford to have given that much, but I was able to do so through my art. It is an amazing feeling knowing that I was able to help in a small way.” Reaching out to The Prestige Club and The Boys and Girls Club, Joseph began living his very own American Dream as his amazing 58

artwork has been featured in both live and silent auctions at many of their prestigious charitable fundraising events. He has helped raise thousands of dollars for these worthy causes. “In July I painted LIVE for the first time at Marlins Park for the FoxSports Charity Auction. That has definitely been the most special event so far for me. That night my paintings raised $17,000 for The Marlins Foundation! When the bid was up to $6,000 I became emotional and told my wife to tell them to please stop bidding, that it was way too much! I think that’s the night things became “real” for me and I realized just how much I really can help other people,” Joseph said. Joseph also lent his talents to help at a recent charity event, when he painted Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler LIVE. Tyler, who also attended the event, signed the painting, which was auctioned off and helped raise money. Joseph most recently painted a portrait of George Sr. and Barbara Bush LIVE at the Sexiest Party of the Year, BeachBash, benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It was a very proud moment for him to be painting an American President, ultimately, presenting the portrait to their son, Jeb Bush. As for the future, in Jan 2015 Joseph will have the honor of teaching a group of kids at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital how to paint. He states, “I am so excited about this new opportunity! It is such a blessing to be able to give back and take their minds off of feeling sick, if only for awhile. I know that it is going to be an amazing, humbling experience and hopefully one that I will be able to do again and again. Joseph’s ultimate goal is to raise $1,000,000 for charities. He states, “I think setting goals in life is important. It gives you something to work towards. So I decided to give myself a goal of raising $1,000,000 for charity, one charity at a time. Anybody can make a million dollars for themselves, but to raise a million for other people, that’s something special. That’s a legacy I will be proud to leave behind and it will be a very proud day when I finally reach my goal.” Tomorrow it’s business as usual for Joseph. He says it’s his day job that keeps him humble. He may not be able to afford to donate money to these charities, but the feeling he gets from knowing that his artwork is helping raise money for these worthy causes makes him like a million bucks.

Three annual shows bring the artworld together in some of the world’s most exciting venues: Basel, in the heart of Europe; Miami Beach at the nexus of North and South America; and Hong Kong, the gateway to Asia. Founded by gallerists in 1970, Art Basel has been a driving force in supporting the role that galleries play in the nurturing of artists, and the development and promotion of visual arts. The dynamic relationships between art galleries, their artists, private collectors and public institutions play an essential role in today’s artworld, and connecting the international art community has been Art Basel’s goal since its beginning. Celebrity Spotting Art Basel is where you could catch a glimpse of your favorite star You might think that all you will find at Art Basel Miami is priceless works of art … but don’t be surprised if you find yourself rubbing shoulders with art collector, Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband Michael Douglas, among the Masterpieces from Picasso, Monet or Dali. She’s one of the most glamorous actresses alive, but Catherine Zeta-Jones’s derworld. The 48-year-old Welsh actress will play real-life drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in new movie The Godmother. It’s a huge stretch for the Oscar winner, known for her flowing gowns, her beautiful figure and her movie star lifestyle with husband Michael Douglas. Blanco was the first woman to rise through the ranks of the famed Medellin drug cartel in Colombia. The murderous mother-offour became so feared that she earned the nicknames Black Widow and Cocaine Godmother. One of the critical highlights of Zeta-Jones’ career was her role as a drug lord’s wife in the movie Traffic back in 2000. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role and then won an Oscar two years later for Chicago. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are regulars at Art Basel Miami

Holidays Some Florida homeowners like to use lighter colors and themes when decorating their homes for the holidays. Maybe your room that you are featuring your tree or other home holiay decor is designed in blues, greens, whites and yellow. If that is the case, these items featured here will certainly compliment your color scheme. I like to follow the colors of the room for holiday decorating. For instance, use white poinsettas instead of red with this color scheme. Also, on your holiday wrapping paper and ribbons, stick with the same colors, or pick one color for wrapping paper like a neutral white and use blue, green, silver, and gold for the ribbons. Use white candles, paperwhites, etc. All of these items are fabulous, but my favorites are the pagoda candle lights for your table, the antler ice bucket(with the champagne of course!), and the reindeer wall sculpture for fun! Another fun tip: you can have one theme in one room, and another theme such as the traditional red and green in another room. Have fun decorating!

Traditional

Spirit The Traditional Red and Green Color Scheme resonates with a lot of people; are you one of them? It screams Classic, Christmas, and the Holidays. If your room calls for these colors, go all out. Set your table with the gorgeous Tiffany Holiday China. This plate is just an example of the entire line of dinnerware and serving pieces. Clear your sideboard or console table and display a Nativity scene or The Tree of Life Menorah. The MacKenzie-Childs topiaries come as is with the planter and tree. I featured here how you can use them indoors or oudoors. And the Kim Seybert runner and Baccarat flutes will make your dining room table pop. Fresh Greenery of garland and wreaths goes wonderful with the traditional theme; swag it up your staircase, on your mantle, over your mantle, or over and entranceway. Maybe you want to display wreaths on every window in a particular room. If FRESH is not your thing, there are an abundance of faux garlands, wreaths etc out there. See what new traditions you will start this year with your home! 80

as one of “Miami’s Buzziest Restaurants”, Meat Market, the contemporary South Beach steakhouse by restaurateur David Tornek and acclaimed chef Sean Brasel, has proven to remain a bustling hot spot for celebrities, local foodies and Miami Beach’s trendsetters. On a busy weeknight, the Meat Market was full of energy, boasting a sophisticated ambiance sizzling with a New York City style happening bar scene, and a savvy menu. “We wanted to bring the American steakhouse into the 21st century,” says Chef Brasel, who co-owns Meat Market with Tornek. “We believe Meat Market offers foodies and steak lovers a much needed fine dining destination.” For this venture, Brasel has created a menu that embraces the staples of a classic steakhouse infused it with an artful, contemporary spin. Embracing a sultry, comfortable modernism that reflects its landmark location on South Beach’s fashionable Lincoln Road Mall, Meat Market’s design, is a significant part of the overall dining experience. A sexy melding of dark, masculine elements, offset by gentle feminine elegance and warm, flattering lighting, the room buzzes with electricity. Luxurious bone colored leather upholstered chairs and a black marble bar top that seamlessly transitions into the adjacent Crudo Bar features a sexier more glamorous take on the traditional steakhouse with a fresh, contemporary look in the the dazzling dining room. Above, stunning Lucite fins stretch across the ceiling, carrying a wave of flame colored lights that cascade down the back wall, washing the room in subtle crimson hues that mix delightfully with rows of golden glass candles. Demanding attention are the three floor-to-ceiling wine display cases with reflecting infinity mirrors. Meat Market’s posh Crudo Bar, a perfect perch for people watching, imbibing and nibbling on a delightfully light nosh, features sumptuous raw bar items such as oysters with yuzu truffle mignonette, atomic horseradish and habanero cocktail sauce along with stone crabs (seasonal) served with classic mustard and cocktail sauces. Also available at Crudo Bar are a stellar lineup of ceviches and tiraditos including fresh ceviche prepared daily; cedar-scented hamachi topped with yuzu, white truffle, fresh lime and jalapeño and tuna tartare with ginger, soy, avocado mash and mango mole. We began our culinary adventure with incredible appetizers that included tender Asian BBQ lamb ribs with hoisin BBQ sauce, papaya slaw, peanuts and cilantro; delicious white truffle Kobe tartar with capers, red onion and parmesan flatbread and truffle roasted escargot with black truffle butter, confit lemon and grilled toast. SEASALT & PEPPER Waterfront Dining at its Finest... FROM THE MOMENT WE ENTERED

Seasalt and Pepper, the exquisite views of the Miami River transcended us to another place and time. It was a busy mid-week night as we settled in along the banks of the river among the twinkling lights reflecting from the moon. The ultimate atmosphere offers seating for 300 guests in a post-industrial warehouse outfitted in unexpected and sophisticated nautical touches. Located on the banks of the Miami River, the restaurant captures the essence of a waterfront experience by enveloping an outdoor lounge with an indoor dining room, both engaging stunning views of Miami’s downtown skyline. Whether you arrive by car or boat, the added bonus of 550 feet of private docking space is available. Their opening unveiled “APPROPIATIONS FROM EL RIO: AS TIME GOES BY”, a permanent art installation by the renowned local artist Carlos Betancourt, commissioned exclusively for the venue. Poignantly, Seasalt and Pepper’s interior design is a study in implicit restraint that blends organic and industrial elements with homage to the area’s nautical roots that fuse harmoniously with Betancourt’s installation that 98

At Seasalt and Pepper you will discover the perfect combination where elegance blends with simplicity. “We have been around the Miami River for the past 15 years always loved it and thought that it should be a destination that should be developed. Most cities around the world London, Paris, Rome, Shanghai are built around the river, Miami has yet to do so until now with Seasalt and pepper making the first leap to pioneer this once forgotten diamond in the rough,” says owners, Maryam and Carlos Miranda. Along with General Manager, Alban Mercaj, they are always there with a warm welcome. It is a celebration of all the senses that marks the return to the core values of hospitality. They house two wood burning ovens catering to their amazing signature bread, handcrafted pizzas, and their signature casseroles. comfort food while elevating it to new heights by introducing sophisticated techniques and heartfelt commitment with an emphasis on freshly sourced produce, harmonious flavor pairings and thoughtful presentations, by Chef Angel Leon. The home of the seafood casserole, Seasalt and Pepper continues to deliver the signature fare that has become part of the eatery’s recognition. We pondered over the menu as we nibbled on the warm delicious bread. With so many tantalizing selections on the menu, began our gourmet adventure with La Plancha of tender grilled octopus and jumbo prawns marinated in olive oil, fresh herbs and lemon zest, and the Meli Melo of Tartare, a fresh trio of tuna, salmon, scallops, watercress, avocado fries

in a soya pesto marinade. The Beef Tomato Burrato was served with flash fried creamy burrato cheese, heirloom tomatoes drizzled with a pesto dressing while the Crab Lump salad delicately combined mixed greens, tomatoes, olives, harricot vert, and almonds in citrus vinaigrette. Fresh Albacore Tuna is complemented with watercress, lychees, arugula drizzled with a lavender dressing, but don’t miss the Roasted Vidalia Onion with shrimp, and cognac gratinee. Beluga or Kaluga Caviar is offered by the ounce and served with Belini and Creme Fraiche while the Rawbar serves up a vast selection of Main Lobster, Oysters, Prawns, Clams, Alaskan King Crab Legs, and Stone Crab Claws (is season). Directly from wood burning ovens the delicious Pizetta’s offer delicious toppings of gorgonzola, pear and black truffle or prosciutto, mozzarella and arugula. Daily specials are incredible…definitely not to be missed! Wood Fire Casseroles are a feast for the eyes…the Classic Seasalt Seafood is loaded with lobster, jumbo shrimp, fish and saffron and the Chicken Casserole blends lemon confit, green olives, rosemary, Italian Sausage in a white wine reduction. Chilean Sea Bass Casserole with a truffle mushroom crust and yukon potatoes is second to none! Alaskan Black Cod Casserole with broccolini, Pernod and miso glaze was just perfect. Creamy Lobster Risotto with baby green peas, chives and cognac is pure decadence as is the Tagliolini Vongole loaded with baby clams, white wine, red pepper flakes, garlic and parsley while the Seasalt Ravioli is stuffed with pear and gorgonzola in a black truffle sauce. Landlubbers can feast on the Black Truffle Veal Chop, wood fire oven roasted to perfection with a white wine reduction as well as the Organic Filet Mignon, Robata infused served with a cognac peppercorn mustard sauce. Wood Fire Rack of Lamb is perfectly crusted in mustard rosemary and garlic. Along with a cappuccino, we dove into our decadent sweet ending. Desserts prepared in house are a compilation of most-loved sweets to include fresh peach tart with ice cream, luscious chocolate mousse and so much more… Whether it’s casual dining, special occasion or a business meeting, you just can’t go wrong. Expressed with words such as Brut or Extra Brut, these are dry to off dry wines, whereas Brut Nature indicates that the wine has no dosage at all. Sec and Demi-Sec wines indicate higher levels of sweetness and Doux is the cherry on top, becoming lusciously, ultra sweet. Most champagne are non-vintage, meaning that there will be no year posted on the label. If you do stumble upon champagne that proudly boasts a year, it indicates that these wines are only made in the best years and are only made from grapes that come from the stated vintage.

amily gatherings, guests, travel, Christmas shopping, dinner parties... the end of the year hassle is here and threatens, time after time to put a damper on our celebrations but don’t let it! Fight back and relieve holiday stress with a pop and two magic words: Champagne please!

Celebrate with any of these exquisite bottles available at our stores:

Laurent Perrier Demi Sec: deep golden color, aromas of dried fruits, hazelnuts, almonds and honey. All around fruit friendly. Henriot Brut: hints of green apples and richness, apricots and smoky minerality. Perfect for appetizers and opening courses.

Ex Star Weatherman

DAVID BERNARD: I’m Selling Houses Now!

If old Marines never die, then neither do TV people. Take former WFOR-CBS4 weatherman David Bernard and longtime WSVN-Channel 7 street reporter Derek Hayward, for example. Bernard, 45, could soon be selling you a house while Hayward is now taking you through work rush hour every morning. Bernard left his job abruptly last year just launched a new real estate company with his partner of five years, longtime real estate broker Charles Urstadt. “I’ve been thinking about this for the past year,” Bernard says. “We wanted to do something together, and I wanted something a little more flexible than doing news every day.” The two just started the Miami Beachbased CD Property, which specializes in high-end digs. “When you’re doing TV like I’ve done for 23 years, you’re in a studio all day for three or four people,” Bernard says. “You’re not really engaged in personal

He moved into the drive time slot with Karen Curtis on a news-talk program that’s supposed to deliver news with a hint of banter. “Derek’s British accent is definitely an asset,” said GM Steve Lapa. “In today’s radio landscape, you need to stand out.”

PHARRELL WILLIAMS Pulls Miami Condo Off MARKET!

Pharrell

Maybe, just maybe, R&B star Pharrell Williams should’ve waited until after Art Basel to make his latest local real estate move! Williams, 41, just pulled his breathtaking downtown Miami condo off the market after attempting unsuccessfully to sell it — even at a huge loss — for nearly two years. We the art-filled palace 40 floors above the Magic City didn’t generate much interest at the latest price, $10.9 million. That’s $1.6 million less than what he bought it for in 2007, according to Miami-Dade County records. And the latest price was $6 million less than last year, at a time when Williams’ profile skyrocketed worldwide with tunes like Happy and Hunter. The floppy-hatted 41-year-old originally bought the 10,000-squarefoot, five-bedroom penthouse in 2007 for $12.5 million. Williams stuffed it with Art Basel modern art, mostly by painter and sculptor Takashi Murakami and giant Kidrobot toys. The singer first listed the crib at the Brickell’s Bristol Tower in November 2012 for a whopping $16.8 million, partly because the condo has a private pool and second-to-none 360-degree view on Miami, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne and the ocean.
