Association for Cultural Exchange

Welcome to our latest ACE Explorers programme, a range of environmentally and socially responsible travel adventures, brought to you by the Association for Cultural Exchange. Founded in 1958 as a non-profitmaking educational trust, we are by far the oldest and most experienced providers of cultural travel in the UK. If you have an interest in nature, walking & wildlife, enjoy good company and a sense of adventure, and are fascinated by indigenous cultures, then you are sure to enjoy our active holidays. Our Explorations are open to anyone with an interest in the subject concerned – no previous knowledge or qualifications are necessary! We look forward to welcoming you on one of our Explorations soon.

Walking, Whales & Wildflowers as they move up from the Antarctic to breed in these waters. There will also be the option of getting close to one of the most exciting marine predators, the Great White Shark, either from on board ship or by experiencing the adrenalin rush of swimming beside them in a cage. Our coastal exploration should also include close encounters with Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Cape Gannets and many other sea creatures. We will spend some time walking in the fynbos, a unique plant kingdom found only in the Western Cape. This is the only place in the world to find Giant Proteas and over 8000 other vascular plants, more than the total for the whole of Britain. We visit three projects supported by Flora and Fauna International: the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative, Walker Bay Conservancy and the Flower Valley Project, where the fynbos vegetation is sustainably harvested for cut flowers, to provide an income for local people. To end our adventure we will stay in a lodge deep within this fascinating biome. Grootbos has just been voted as one of

• the world’s top 101 hotels by the Tatler magazine, and is set on an Indian Ocean beach surrounded by ancient milkwood trees. We will fully explore the Garden Route, a long stretch of coast and forest described as an earthly paradise by the first visiting naturalists. One of the highlights will be a 3-day hike along the 20km Dolphin Trail, which wends its way eastwards through natural fynbos and pristine indigenous forest along the coast of the Tsitsikama National Park from Storms River to the Sandrif River. Wildlife here includes Knysna Lourie, Black Oystercatcher, Cape Clawless Otter, eagles, dolphins and whales, and there will be opportunities for swimming and snorkeling as well as some challenging walking. Backpacks will not be needed, as our luggage will be carried to our comfortable overnight chalets. Later we can canoe along the rivers and lakes, or cycle through forests, with the option of a tougher ride through the Prince Albert Pass, as we explore the dramatic mountains, farmland and semi-desert of the Little Karoo. Here we include a visit to a unique wild meerkat conservation project, and with luck enjoy close views of these delightful creatures. In order to fully appreciate all that South Africa has to offer we will stay in a variety of accommodation, from simple cabins for hikers, to the comfortable and characterful guest houses, to the luxury of Grootbos Lodge.

Trek the Dolphin Trail through the heart of the Garden Route area – while your luggage is carried to your comfortable chalet! Luxury stays in Cape Town and Grootbos Lodge, one of the world’s top hotels. Watch Southern Right Whales and their young. Close encounters with meerkats, ostriches and the wonderful flowers and birdlife of the fynbos floral region. Explore the landscapes of the Little Karoo Desert. Options for canoeing & cycling and for swimming with sharks.

Make a difference to wildlife conservation in South Africa by visiting and helping three linked projects, all supported by FFI: The Flower Valley Project, the Walker Bay Conservancy and the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative, a partnership between South African National Parks and FFI. All contribute to protecting the fynbos, the most botanically rich habitat on earth, with a plant diversity even higher than the tropical rainforests. Together they promote biodiversity conservation in this southernmost part of Africa, through sustainable flower harvesting, nature based tourism, and local public awareness.

South Africa’s Western Cape is a land of dramatic natural attractions, adventure and culture. We will explore the urban glories of Cape Town, the pastoral bliss of the Little Karoo, and the wilderness hiking around Walker Bay. The coast, where the cold Atlantic currents meet the warm Agulhas current from the India Ocean, provides a wealth of marine life. We hope to see Southern Right Whales, one of the world’s rarest and most dramatic cetaceans,

On our visit to Flower Valley we will see how this successful community initiative works, and there will be opportunities to buy some of the products, including handmade paper and cards featuring dried fynbos flowers. We also stay at Grootbos, one of the partners in the Walker Bay Conservancy. This award-winning lodge runs its own environmental college, and a large nature reserve, where their experts have already discovered two fynbos species new to science.

Chem-Crete Pavix CCC100 (Pavix®) from International Chem-Crete Inc, (www.chem-crete.com) is fast becoming the UK building sector’s first choice for protecting concrete bridges, car parks, buildings and other structures against potential moisture and frost damage, following a highly successful trade event at London’s Institute of Civil Engineers (April 26 2006). And it’s easy to see why.

"Previously UK engineers were forced into using silane to protect reinforced concrete but the treatment just isn’t practical. Silane is so toxic that workers have to wear protective gear and areas need to be screened off plus it needs two applications to be fully effective and cannot be applied in damp or wintry weather. "The (Coalport) bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade II listed building but it needed upgrading and strengthening. As a final stage before re-opening it we applied Pavix to the tops of the kerbs to maintain and protect the original concrete surface. The bridge is directly above the Severn Gorge so the environmental risks in using silane were just too great," said Adrian Pike, director of Pitchmastic PmB, the approved applicator commissioned for this work.
