9 With a test set-up during the Oerol festival in 2015, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), in cooperation with TU Delft, tested which way of building impedes the sand drift the least. Students developed new ideas for sustainable beach buildings. 10 IBA is looking for innovative, future-oriented projects that will be of long-lasting importance to the development of a town, city or region. IBA does not build itself, but manages processes. It is laying the foundation for a new orientation towards the future in which social changes are stimulated. To put it simply, IBA contributes to the improvement of a town, city or region. IBA gives it a boost. In 2020, the IBA period will end with an exhibition of the completed projects. C O LL A B O R ATI O N S Talent development, searching for relationships in the business community and the government are guiding principles in order to strengthen our position in society and to examine how we can integrate this in the academic domain. For example, we created a Stuiflab together with the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) during the Oerol-festival on the Dutch island of Terschelling in 20159. aE/ intecture was also involved as adviser and inspirer in the creation of IBA Parkstad in Limburg to be completed by 2020 from the beginning10. In addition, new ideas for tackling living and working in Kampongs in Indonesia have been mapped out in the recent past, in which students have visited Bandung and the way in which it is possible to collaborate with the business community and the university there has been investigated11. In the past year, students have been deployed to work on Learning from Lowlands, a project involving the famous annual Lowlands Festival in Biddinghuizen, examining in which way it is possible to learn from such temporary building structures12 . Meanwhile, an inspiring design relationship has been built up with the management of the Marineterrein in Amsterdam and the Makerversity13 , so that students and researchers are given the opportunity to collaborate on the flexible city that is going to be developed at this unique location in the coming years. With our seismic project, the earthquakerelated issues in Groningen, and in particular the design solutions that are being devised for this, have been made visible. aE/intecture wants to demonstrate with such examples that architects can integrate innovative design solutions and thus contribute to the improvement of living conditions. We are following graduates in their practice to see if our approach has an influence on the changing role of the modern architect.
