Welcome! The best daily living aids fulfil a real function to help people move safely, prevent falls, and maintain their independence with everyday tasks. They also happen to offer a very easy add-on sale for the mobility retailer as a 'solutions provider'. From handy jar openers and sock aids to practical grab rails and indoor rollators, find plenty of the latest and most innovative products in the Retailers’ Choice (p10) and Buyers’ Guide (p48) features. Keeping to the theme, Jodi Sanders, Managing Director of daily living aids supplier, Ravencourt (p35), tells THIIS about the secrets to the firm’s long-term success, as well as the new products and exciting partnerships it has planned. Stairlift Solutions has officially opened its doors to its second showroom in Northern Ireland, giving people across the city of Derry greater independence through its range of stairlifts, mobility scooters and wheelchairs. THIIS chats to managing director, Michael Wallace, to find out how the move went (p21). As eFOLDi marks its 10th anniversary, read about how far the firm has come from its original invention and how many of the principles that shaped its first designs remain central to the firm’s own philosophy about mobility today (p31). Plus, in his latest article, Dr Barend ter Haar of BES Healthcare (p42) looks at some of important considerations in the selection and prescription of pressure care mattresses. Don’t forget that you can stay up-to-date about the industry with twice-weekly e-mail updates. Sign up now by scanning the QR code (right). Enjoy the issue!

Rolling out this autumn Norwegian mobility brand MOVU is launching its Scandinavian three-wheel rollator in the UK this autumn after establishing a new partnership with John Preston Healthcare Group. MOVU was developed in Norway by founder and CEO Øyvind Gedde for his mother, who wanted to create a mobility product that provided the support she needed without looking or feeling clinical. The rollator encourages the user to adopt a more upright and natural walking posture through its ergonomic steering handle, while a large front wheel helps the user move more easily over uneven surfaces. A fold-out seat enables the user to rest whenever needed, while the folding rear wheels allow the Movu to become much narrower for transport and storage.

THE RETAILERS’

CHOICE

Daily living aids

Wondering which daily living aids are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Uccello Kettle by Uccello “For a number of years now, we have been supplying the Uccello Kettle in our showroom and it is very popular with our customers due to it being very modern but also functional. “The revolutionary shape of the Uccello Kettle was thoughtfully designed to enable hot water to be poured from the kettle to the cup, making it effortless and safe to use. “The lightweight design, along with the rotating cradle of the Uccello Kettle, means that the user only has to 'tilt-to-pour', eliminating any lifting,

10 | Retailers’ choice | thiis.co.uk

or trying to balance and aim when pouring hot water! “The kettle has an auto shut-off with overheating protection, a water level indicator and a large non-slip base giving the user peace of mind when using it. It holds 1.5 litres capacity and has a power-on light. “The kettle is detachable from the base for optional handheld pouring and refilling through the large hinged lid. It has a removable, stainless steel anti-scale filter too, for ease of cleaning. “The Uccello comes in different

colours to suit the user's colour scheme – black and white, all black, red and white and all white. It also comes with a two-year warranty. It is an award-winning product and our team love selling this product in our showroom.”

JarKey by Brix Design “This product for me is a life saver, as no longer do I have to smash jars on the floor to release the seal or try to find some strong willing household member to undo the jars for me. I also love selling this product because it really does work. The JarKey is simply placed against the jar lid which breaks the seal and then makes it easy to turn the lid. “This award-winning tool is designed to fit all standard jar lids and works with a simple, yet effective, mechanism. The vacuum seal is instantly released, allowing the user to unscrew the lid with ease — no more straining or struggling. “Crafted from high-density plastic, the JarKey is not only elegant but also highly durable with exceptional

durability. Its elegant design features no sharp edges, points, or removable parts, making it both safe and user-friendly. “Unlike other jar openers that can be cumbersome or complicated, the JarKey is lightweight and easy to handle, ensuring a smooth and comfortable grip for all users. “The unique thing about the JarKey is the special three-point principle that ensures the vacuum can be released by a gentle lift without damaging the lid. After releasing the vacuum, the lid can easily be unscrewed. Whether the user is dealing with jams, pickles, or preserves, the JarKey is the perfect tool. “The JarKey is dishwasher-proof, so keeping it clean is as effortless as using it. Dealing with stubborn lids,

the JarKey is the ultimate solution for hassle-free jar.” Karen Sheppard Managing Director of People First Mobility peoplefirst mobility.com

Artline walker by Rehasense “As fashion changes Rehasence have really hit the mark with its Artline walkers. We are finding today more clients want a product that is a statement piece rather than the traditional look. “The colourways, Zebra, Leopard, Flower Power, Art Deco, Peony, Checkmate and Cloud, really stand out. Quality has not been compromised with the flashy looks. With a large 5kg shopping bag, ergonomic handles and a patented ‘click and safe’ safety catch to make lifting it a breeze it’s a winner with our clients. “Its 8” wheels offer excellent stability along

with great manoeuvrability. For those clients that are a little more reserved, more subtle colours are available “With a safe working load of 150kg a manageable 5.8kg lifting weight and both medium and large frame options we are finding this to be a real winning product.”

Greg Mills Managing Director of Mills Mobility www. millsmobility aids.co.uk

Soxon Sock Aid by Helping Hand “All retailers that have a shopfront, be it physical or virtual, will have a selection of products that do not fall into specific groups such as mobility, bathing, etc, that would be termed 'aids to daily living'. “Our measure for this is 'How often are they used?' and 'Do they fulfil a real function?' So our choice of an aid to daily living would be the Soxon from Helping Hand.

12 | Retailers’ choice | thiis.co.uk

“The Soxon Sock Aid makes putting on socks simple – no bending, twisting, or balancing acts required. Soft, simple, and frustration-free, it holds the sock open so the user can gently slide their foot in, then pull it up using the extra-long tapes. The Soxon slips away, leaving the sock perfectly in place. “Made from soft, hypoallergenic bamboo fabric, it's gentle on skin, wicks away moisture to keep feet dry, and is easy to clean. “Whether the wearer is dressing from a chair, bed,

or standing, the Soxon makes starting the day easier and more comfortable. “It is a 'one size fits all' solution to a common problem that anyone with reduced mobility would benefit from. From the retailer's point of view, it is also a very easy add-on sale'.” Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids tpg-disable aids.co.uk

DEALER INSIGHT

Fully Loaded. Life. Uninterrupted. Terence Clark, Director at RMA, explains how the R4SE delivers impressive capability and specification without becoming unnecessarily oversized. Terence Clark Is an RMA Director and has over 25 years’ experience in the mobility industry.

Why does the R4SE stand out? Terence Clark: It offers outstanding capability in a manageable package. It feels robust and substantial without being absolutely enormous, making it a strong option for everyday independence. What difference do the 75Ah batteries make? Terence Clark: The larger batteries give the R4SE the capacity to travel further, with a maximum range of up to 30 miles. They provide greater confidence for longer journeys and help it deliver consistent performance during regular use. Serious capability doesn’t have to come in an enormous package.

What features does it offer? Terence Clark: The R4SE comes fully loaded, with a level of specification that would make some car manufacturers blush. It includes: • Heated seat & handlebars • Smartphone screen mirroring • Reversing camera • Radio & Bluetooth audio • Automatic indicator & Headlights • Large LCD display • Keyless ignition • Phone Holder • USB Charging Port

fp

Together, they make longer journeys more comfortable & convenient all year round.

How does the R4SE perform? Terence Clark: With an 8mph top speed, powerful 700W motor and maximum user weight of 160kg, the R4SE has the strength and capability to handle longer journeys and the demands of everyday use.

It combines manageable dimensions with serious performance, comfort and a very impressive specification.

The Buckingham Caddy by Buckingham Healthcare “One of our most popular daily living aids is the Buckingham Caddy – a wonderfully simple product that addresses a very real everyday problem. “Designed to help people carry drinks and other items safely while using a walking frame, the Buckingham Caddy allows the user to transport everyday essentials without needing to use their hands. This can make a significant difference to someone who relies on their walking frame for stability and would otherwise struggle to carry a cup of tea, a meal or personal belongings from one room to another. “The clever design incorporates separate compartments for useful everyday items, together with an innovative mug holder designed to reduce the risk of spills. It is lightweight, easy to clean and can

be fitted to most standard walking frames without complicated fixings. “From a retailer's perspective, the Buckingham Caddy is exactly the type of daily living aid we like to offer. Its purpose is immediately understandable, it solves a genuine problem and, importantly, it can help someone retain a little more independence within their own home. “It is also a product that demonstrates why daily living aids shouldn't be underestimated. Sometimes it isn't a sophisticated or expensive piece of equipment that makes the greatest difference - it is a thoughtfully designed solution to an everyday frustration. “The Buckingham Caddy has remained a firm favourite with our customers for precisely that reason: it is practical, well designed and helps make one of life's simplest

pleasures – carrying a cup of tea that little bit easier. “And its price point is great too, making it an accessible and long lasting daily living aid for all."

Julia Phipps Director of The Ability Superstore www.ability superstore.com

Prima Grab Bars by Gordon Ellis & Co “When it comes to making a home safer and more comfortable, it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference. The Prima Grab Rail offers strong, reliable support for the end user, while helping to reduce the risk of slips and falls. “Unlike traditional metal grab rails, the Prima is warm and comfortable to touch, even on chilly mornings. Its ribbed grip is designed to feel secure in the hand and helps prevent slipping, including when the rail is wet. “It’s also incredibly versatile. The Prima Grab Rail can be fitted vertically or horizontally, or used in a combination of both, depending on where support is needed. Whether it’s helping the user move safely in the bathroom, steadying them

14 | Retailers’ choice | thiis.co.uk

as they get up, or assisting with transfers, it can be positioned to suit their needs. “Behind its stylish white and mint finish is a strong concealed aluminium core, giving the rail an impressive maximum user weight of 160kg. Its ergonomic oval shape also makes it comfortable and easy to grip. “Smart, practical and built to last, the Prima Grab Rail proves that adding extra support around the home doesn’t have to mean compromising on comfort or style.”

Play to your strengths There are things independent mobility retailers can do extremely well, precisely because they are independent… Independent retailers sometimes look at larger competitors and focus on the areas where they appear to have an advantage: larger marketing budgets, more locations, bigger purchasing power or more sophisticated technology, but that can lead to the wrong response. The objective should not be to turn an independent retailer into a smaller version of a national chain. There are things independent retailers do extremely well precisely because they are independent. They know their local market, and they can make decisions quickly. The person who first speaks to a customer may still be involved when the product is delivered. Customers often like to deal with people who know their circumstances rather than having to navigate a large organisation each time they make contact. Those advantages become more powerful when the business builds its processes around them. Personal service is not simply about being friendly, it is remembering what was agreed. It is calling when you said you would call. It is knowing that a particular customer needs a home visit rather than expecting them to travel unnecessarily. It is an engineer arriving with enough information to understand the history of the product before asking the customer to explain everything again. That is what good service looks like from the customer’s side of the counter. The sale should not be the finish line. IMPORTANCE OF AFTERCARE One area where many independent retailers still have considerable opportunity is what happens after the initial purchase. Businesses understandably focus

18 | Insight | thiis.co.uk

on finding new customers. New enquiries are visible. New sales are exciting. Marketing activity tends to be built around generating more of them. Existing customers, however, can receive much less attention. Yet in mobility retail, a purchase often creates an ongoing relationship. A scooter may need servicing, batteries or replacement parts. A customer’s requirements may change over time. Family members may also look to the same retailer when they need advice. And, of course, a satisfied customer can become one of the most credible sources of new business through recommendations and reviews. That is why delivery should not be treated as the end of the customer journey. Take something as straightforward as a follow-up call. A retailer delivers a scooter, explains its operation and leaves the customer happy with the product. A few days later, somebody from the business calls to check how they are getting on. The customer may have discovered a question they did not think to ask during delivery. Perhaps they are uncertain about charging or they have struggled with one of the controls. Perhaps everything is fine. Either way, the retailer has demonstrated that the relationship did not end when payment was taken. The same principle can be applied to service reminders. Rather than relying on the customer to remember when maintenance is due, the business can prompt them at an appropriate point. That is helpful for the customer and commercially sensible for the retailer. Done properly, good aftercare supports retention, servicing revenue, repeat business and referrals.

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY Technology can offer a useful way to support the customer relationship. There is sometimes a fear that improving business systems makes a company less personal. It should do the opposite. The best use of technology in an independent retail business is often to remove the administration that gets in the way of good service. If an enquiry arrives through the website, somebody should know it is there and who is responsible for responding. If an appointment has been booked, the customer should receive confirmation. If a product has been supplied, the relevant details should be recorded somewhere the team can actually find them. If a customer calls two years later about their scooter, imagine the difference between these two experiences. In the first, the customer gives their name and the person answering the phone can see what was purchased, when it was supplied and whether the business has previously carried out any work on it. In the second, the customer is asked whether they can find an old invoice because nobody is quite sure what product they have. One feels organised and reassuring. The other creates work for the customer. That is the point of technology. Not to replace the conversation, but to make the conversation better.

Getting merry in Derry Stairlift Solutions N.I. has opened its doors in Derry, giving people across Northern Ireland's second city the opportunity of greater independence… After opening Northern Ireland’s biggest stairlift and mobility showroom in Newtownards, County Down just three years ago, Stairlift Solutions N.I. recently decided that the time was right to expand into Northern Ireland’s second biggest city, Londonderry. “We already had a full-time engineer based there, along with a small store and it was becoming more and more apparent that we needed to expand our operations to serve the entire north-west region of Northern Ireland, as well as the city of Derry itself,” explains Michael Wallace, Managing Director of Stairlifts Solutions. “There was nothing like this in that area of the country at all, so we felt it was a good opportunity to properly showcase our excellent range of mobility products and customer service to a whole new region.” THE RIGHT LOCATION It had taken a while to find the right

site for the second showroom, Michael says. Business premises can be quite hard to come by in the Derry area, he says, especially for what was needed for Stairlift Solutions N.I. After looking for several months the right place came up on the Maydown Industrial Estate and Michael and his team moved quickly to secure it. With the site secured it was a real team effort to get everything ready, says Michael. “All the tradespeople we used to get set up were great, and people were just so friendly and helpful that it made the entire process so much easier.” Just like Stairlift Solutions N.I.’ main showroom in Newtownards, and even the smaller one before that, in Bangor, County Down, Michael says that it was “fairly obvious” from the first visit that the new site was going to work well for the business. At around 3,500 square feet, it was the perfect size, split over two levels so that Stairlift Solutions N.I. could showcase its large range of

stairlift models as well as its various mobility scooters, riser recliners, wheelchairs, rollators, and more. “We didn’t have too much work to do before moving in,” Michael explains. “There was already one curved staircase there but we had another large double staircase purpose-built to display our various straight and curved stairlifts models, including our new range of Stannah Stairlifts. We also built a new store room downstairs too.” Most of the products downstairs are ready for customers to try themselves, and there is plenty of space to test drive the scooters and powered wheelchairs without having to go outside. All of the riser recliners and other larger pieces of furniture are upstairs with plenty of space left to grow for the ever-expanding range of mobility products. TEAM EFFORT Ted Lynch is the branch manager at the new showroom in Derry. It was

The grand opening

“We needed to expand our operations to serve the entire north-west region of Northern Ireland” a well-earned promotion for Ted, who had been a full-time engineer at Stairlift Solutions N.I. for several years, managing the increasing demand for mobility equipment in the north-west. Working alongside Ted is Deirdre Donnell, Service Manager, and Danielle McAllister, Sales and Office Administrator, who are based full-time at the new showroom and office. Michael says: “Both have really hit the ground running and are great additions to our team! "We are also currently looking for a new full-time engineer based in the area to join our ever-expanding team as we have high hopes for big growth in the north-west region.” Much of the work with the new showroom set-up has been overseen and managed by James Dowling, General Manager, and Jen Evans, Operations Manager. Michael says that staff have worked tirelessly to get things up and

running and make the new showroom successful from the start. “The whole team has been very excited about unlocking the potential here.” GRAND OPENING The launch event on August 17 offered an opportunity for the retailer to showcase the equipment and outline its mission to help customers stay mobile both at home and in the community. Local media were invited to come along to cover the event and watch local celebrity Frank Mitchell officially cut the ribbon. Frank is a company ambassador for the retailer and has done TV adverts and other promotional bits over the past few years. Guests who came along on the day included local councillors, charity

representatives and business owners. Representatives from the mobility sector also made the trip over to Northern Ireland to show their support. These included Rick Bennett and Lyndsey Jackson-Smith from Access BDD Stairlifts, Dave Adams from Electric Mobility and Todd Lawrence from Scooterpac. “It means a lot to us when suppliers make the effort to come over the water to see us and be present for events like this,” Michael says. “We also had lots of visitors who braved the rain on the day and were also able to grab a bite to eat from the food we brought in from various local cafes and restaurants.” MOBILITY BESTSELLERS Customers visiting the showroom can certainly expect a warm, friendly

The most popular products since opening the showroom have been the Vippi LiFe mobility scooter from Electric Mobility, the Atom Fold and Atom Powerchair from Scooterpac and rollators from Rehasense, which come in a range of styles and funky colours. Michael adds: “We have also had plenty of interest in our new Stannah Stairlifts range as we are now official dealers for Stannah here in Northern Ireland. “It is a big deal for us and we have been selling lots of their straight and curved stairlifts over the past few months.” The business continues to keep an eye out for new products, Michael says. “It’s an ever-increasing industry and some of the latest things that are coming out are pushing the technology further on. It’s an exciting space to watch and it’ll be interesting to see how it develops in the years ahead.” Good communication with suppliers in the industry is key to the business, as well as pricing, offers and turnaround time, Michael says. “The more we get from them, the more we can give back in terms of sales and promoting their products, so it’s very much a two-way relationship.” CUSTOMER SERVICE Customer service continues to be a “number one” priority, Michael says, and what sets the business apart from its competitors. All of the retailer’s stairlift and mobility products have full warranty cover, with many for multiple years and with free services included in the price, along with extended warranty or service plan options. Michael says: “We always make sure that we look after our 10,000-plus customers from over the past 26 years and that’s why we have well over 1,000 glowing testimonials and reviews across our various platforms from our very happy customers.” The website continues to play an important role in helping customers find out more about the business and the products it offers. Michael points out that the website provides lots of information for customers, including free downloads and video galleries.

E-commerce is something that the business offers too, but Michael says that nothing beats customers coming in to see and test drive the scooters, or sit in the riser recliner chairs themselves, before making the commitment to buy. For this purpose, the retailer makes sure to have a large range of demo models at both of its showrooms ready for customers to fully try out.

Stairlifts Solutions offers free delivery, assembly and demonstration across Northern Ireland on its range of mobility products as they appreciate that not everyone can get to one of their showrooms easily. SECTOR RECOGNITION The mobility industry still faces the same challenges as many other sectors right now, Michael says, with the price of fuel dictating most things.

“We have had plenty of interest in our new Stannah Stairlifts range”

Todd Lawrence showcases a Scooterpac mobility scooter to staff, alongside Frank Mitchell

Michael says: “We haven’t had a general price increase since 2024 and we have had to absorb a lot since then. Constant price increases from all sides and a big jump in wage expectations due to new government policies doesn’t help either, however we are confident that we can continue to grow at a rapid rate, especially now that we’ve increased our market share by opening another showroom in Derry.” Stairlift Solutions N.I. are delighted to have been shortlisted for the BHTA Awards this year, Michael says, for ‘Retailer of the Year’, ‘Team of the Year’ and Kale Bell for ‘Rising Star’.

Michael says: “We have won and have been nominated for several local awards again this year but to be recognised at a national UK level again is something to be very proud of, the same as the BHTA and the FSB Awards in 2024.” Warehouse supervisor Kale started as an apprentice with Stairlift Solutions N.I. a few years ago, and Michael says that it is great to see his rapid progression. The retailer currently has three more apprentices working there. “It’s great to give young people a chance to get started in the working world and potentially offer them a future career too.” LOOKING TO THE FUTURE There is the possibility of other Stairlift Solutions N.I. branches opening at some point in the future, and even the potential for cross border expansion into the Republic of Ireland, however for now Michael is happy to focus on the showrooms it is operating currently. Getting the new Derry branch has been especially rewarding, he says, as there has been nothing like it in the city or the surrounding area. “The welcome we have received has been amazing. The people are so friendly and it’s great to offer this service to the city and beyond for an ever-ageing population that wants to stay young and active.”

Removing barriers

Jianmin Wang, inventor of the original eFOLDi

For 10 years eFOLDI has been focused on engineering genuinely innovative portable mobility solutions… As eFOLDi marks its 10th anniversary, the company has come a long way from the original invention created by engineer Jianmin Wang. Yet many of the principles that shaped that first design, from simplicity and portability to finding the right balance between weight, strength and stability, remain central to the way he thinks about mobility today. For Jianmin, looking at a mobility product is about much more than its appearance or specification. He sees a series of engineering decisions, from the way the product folds and the materials used to how stable it feels and how easily someone can lift, transport and store it. "Every joint, every mechanism

30 | Trade talk | thiis.co.uk

and every gram of weight affects the experience of the person who depends on it," he says. "I always start by asking the same questions: Is it safe? Is it reliable? Is it intuitive to use? And does it genuinely make travelling easier?" ENGINEERING A SOLUTION It is an approach that can be traced back to the beginnings of eFOLDi. Jianmin developed the original product after an injury affected his own mobility and he found the scooters available at the time too heavy and cumbersome for the way he wanted to live. His daughter Sumi later recognised that the solution he had created for himself could help many more people and went on to develop eFOLDi as a business.

For Jianmin, however, the starting point was an engineering problem. While recovering in hospital, he spent many hours considering different folding concepts and linkage mechanisms, looking for a way to

“Every joint, every mechanism and every gram of weight affects the experience of the person who depends on it”

“For people who regularly lift, fold and transport their mobility product, every kilogram makes a real difference” reduce the number of actions needed to transform the scooter for transport. After several redesigns, he developed a mechanical linkage whereby folding the backrest automatically retracted the rear wheels, making the whole process simpler and more intuitive. "I wanted users to be able to move easily from a compact product for transport, to a seat and then to a fully functioning mobility scooter," he explains. "The principle was to do more with fewer actions." Materials were another important consideration and Jianmin's focus on portability led him to explore the use of magnesium alloy. Although magnesium is more expensive and challenging to work with than some alternatives, it offered the combination of low weight, strength and durability that he was looking for. "For people who regularly lift, fold and transport their mobility product, every kilogram makes a real difference," he says. "But reliability and long-term durability are just as important as achieving a low weight." For Jianmin, this is where good engineering becomes a question of balance rather than focusing on any one aspect of a product in isolation. Weight is clearly important in portable mobility, particularly for anyone lifting a scooter into a car or travelling with it, but it has to be considered alongside strength, stability, durability, ease of use and the confidence of the person riding it. "Good engineering is always about balance. Every design decision affects something else," he says. "Making a product lighter must never come at the expense of stability, strength, durability or the user's confidence." It is a practical approach to lightweight design. Reducing weight has real value when it makes a mobility product easier to lift, transport and

store, but the aim is to achieve that without compromising the other qualities the user depends on. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Portable mobility has changed considerably over the past decade and Jianmin believes there is still plenty of scope for further innovation. However, he does not see the future as being about adding more functions or technology for the sake of it. Instead, he believes the focus should remain on solving real problems and making products easier and more intuitive to use. "I believe the next generation of portable mobility products should become smarter without becoming more complicated," he says. "Features that genuinely help users, such as making it easier to overcome everyday obstacles, simplifying operation or improving

safety, are far more valuable than adding unnecessary complexity. Engineering should remove barriers, not create them." Ten years on, that approach remains remarkably close to the thinking behind Jianmin's original invention: identify the problem, find the simplest way to solve it and make each engineering decision work for the person who will ultimately use the product. Jianmin may be older now, but he has not lost the habit of looking at everyday problems and wondering how they might be solved. Engineering, along with music, remains one of his great passions and he continues to develop new ideas. "As long as there are problems worth solving and people's lives can be made a little easier, I'll continue thinking about the next invention," he says. efoldi.com

Helping customers keep track Family-run daily living aids supplier Ravencourt combines personable customer service with an ever-increasing portfolio of products… Founded in 1984 by the Story family and based in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Ravencourt develops and distributes daily living aids and assistive products. The firm provides products for the adult social care sector as well as for the retail market, and its current portfolio includes solutions for people living with dementia, sight loss, hearing loss, and sensory needs, to help them live independently and improve their quality of life. Jodi Sanders, Managing Director of Ravencourt, tells THIIS about the secrets to the firm’s long-term

success, as well as new products and partnerships on the horizon… PLEASE CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR STORY WITH RAVENCOURT? “I started working for Ravencourt as a general manager in November 2023, progressing to managing director in September 2025, where I help develop products that support people who need care and assist

schools in creating more inclusive and effective learning environments. This role combines my drive to improve lives with my passion for innovation and purpose-led business.” WHO ARE THE OTHER KEY PEOPLE HEADING UP RAVENCOURT? “The Story family who founded the company back in 1948 are very much part of the business and always will be. "Rachel Munday heads up sales and customer service.”

RAVENCOURT WAS ESTABLISHED AS A SCIENTIFIC MANUFACTURER IN 1984. WHEN DID THE FIRM START MANUFACTURING DAILY LIVING AIDS? “We began manufacturing daily living aids under Ravencourt Living in 2019, as we had been making talking watches for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) for a few years and had decided to commit to being a manufacturer of these products. “In 2021 we launched Story and Sons, a consumer website, with the goal of getting the best products into the hands of those who really needed them. Since this, we’ve worked with leading charities and organisations in the care sector, such as the NHS, Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK and RNIB.” WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES THE FIRM STAND OUT IN THE MARKETPLACE? “Lots of other retailers stock functional products at low prices; but often, there are better quality products available. Some sellers have limited and specialised product ranges, meaning customers have to go to several sites or destinations to get what they need. “We bring together a high-quality range of products for elderly and disabled people, people living with blindness and visual impairments, people with dementia and memory loss, along with many other conditions. “This, combined with our personable customer service and care, helps us to stand out from other providers. Ravencourt also supports the design, development and manufacturing of products, which means that we know the

products are customer-focused and ethically made, since we are involved through the whole production journey.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE BESTSELLING PRODUCTS IN THE DAILY LIVING AIDS AREA? “Our three biggest bestsellers are the Tabby ‘Joy for All’ Cat, the Rosebud Reminder clock and the Talking Button Clock. “The Joy for All animatronic cats are designed to soothe and provide companionship, particularly to older people and those living with dementia. “Realistically designed, the cats purr and meow, responding to touch, building interaction and connection while calming anxieties. This cat takes the place of a real cat. Many in care have had to give up their animals, so the product enables them to have their own animatronic version without the continued cost and levels of attention needed to look after a real cat. “The Rosebud Reminder clock was developed in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society to help prompt people living with memory loss to do daily tasks. The clock has 20 customisable reminders, where caregivers can voicerecord or write text alerts for medication, meals, and appointments. This in turn encourages independence for the person using the clock. Many caregivers and family members can’t be there 24/7,

“The Idem digital clock is specifically designed for people living with dementia” so the Rosebud Reminder clock helps ensure care continues while they’re not there. This is really useful for caregivers and family, because it helps relieve the stress and worry that can come from leaving their loved one alone. “The Talking Button Clock has a high-quality loud and clear voice which tells the time and date at the press of a button and has an alarm feature. "The compact design sits flat, secure, and cannot easily be knocked over. It has one large white circular button framed by a black base, providing excellent colour contrast for ease of identification. "Useful for those living with visual impairments, this button makes time-telling accessible, acting as an incredibly helpful tool for those who are blind or have low vision, which is what makes this product a bestseller.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY NEW PRODUCTS YOU ARE INTRODUCING INTO THE MOBILITY RETAIL MARKET? “Currently, we're introducing the Idem smart clock and the Idem connected pill dispenser. It shows the time, date, day of the week, and if it’s morning, afternoon, or evening on a large and easy-to-read display. “With the Idem Companion App, caregivers can manage the clock's features from their smartphones or tablets. They can send and keep track of reminders, messages, notes, and upcoming events featured on the clock in real-time. This is really helpful for

managing appointments, medication doses and just checking in with a loved one with personal messages that display on a digital Post-It note on the face of the clock. “The connected pill dispenser ensures medications are taken at the right time. Working together with the Idem Smart Clock, the dispenser automatically releases the dose at the scheduled time and displays a clear reminder on the clock. "Once the medication is taken, caregivers receive confirmation directly in the Idem mobile app. Caregivers can manage this remotely through medication schedules on the app, ensuring that the correct dose is taken at the correct time.” IS RAVENCOURT LOOKING TO EXPAND ITS RETAILER NETWORK?

“We're excited to have just launched on Dunelm’s online shop, as well as working on a partnership with a wellknown health retailer, both of which are great opportunities to get our products

“We bring together a highquality range of products for elderly and disabled people” out to more people who need them. “We work with the marketing teams of the retailers to ensure the right message is sent out about our products, and we offer training to the staff on how to use our products and how they can help customers in certain situations. “Retailers interested in becoming a partner can send the team an email at sales@ravencourt.com or call us on 01780 489100.” HOW DOES RAVENCOURT KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ITS CUSTOMERS IN TERMS OF EVENTS AND INITIATIVES? “We regularly update our customers via our social media accounts on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook on existing and new products and their benefits. We’ll post about upcoming events we’re attending where we can meet our customers face-to-face, such as Sight Village in Wales or the Care Show in Birmingham. “We also send out a newsletter to customers who have subscribed to us or purchased a product, which can include updates to products, new launches or upcoming events.” WHAT DOES THE REST OF 2026 LOOK FOR RAVENCOURT? “We're currently working on the design and launch of our new website which will unify all of our company offerings and reveal our new branding. There are several new products coming up next year, some of which are updated versions of already well-loved products. "We're also working on a few product developments for RNIB, and we have an exciting product we're working on with Sheffield University!”

Properties of mattresses We prescribe mattresses for pressure distribution, but are there not other equally important considerations? When we consider the prescription of cushions we take into account the client’s needs for skin tissue integrity management, positioning, and functionality. For the sake of the health of the client’s skin, we include friction, shear, and microclimate. Experienced prescribers of cushions have moved well past just the objective of pressure redistribution on its own, with a check list of 30 variables1 where a number of each can have critical importance to the client’s health and functionality. How many of these variables should be considered in the selection and prescription of a mattress? At the September 2026 meeting of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) in Dublin, the results of a survey of mattress prescribers were presented2. The survey was centred on “What matters when

evaluating a Pressure Mattress?”. Over 80 per cent of the survey respondents had been in practice for more than 10 years, representing a high level of experience in this field – or maybe a high degree of inertia from “we’ve always done it this way”? The survey covered Core clinical priorities Functional and patientcentred factors Practical and systemlevel considerations Sustainability Factors relating to product choice Two thirds of the respondents came from supply into the community and one third from the acute sector. The differences between these settings is important in that the number of days that a person is using a medical mattress will generally be much greater

in the primary care setting than in a hospital, along with other situational differences in care provision, and so the relative importance of the different properties of the mattress could be very different between different settings. CORE CLINICAL PROPERTIES The participants in the survey were asked to rank five aspects in order of importance. The result placed ‘pressure redistribution’ at the top for 69 per cent of the respondents. ‘Patient comfort’ came next, ranked number one by 25 per cent of the respondents. ‘Shear reduction’ came next, then ‘friction reduction’, and then ‘microclimate management’. This is interesting in that without pressure bringing skin into contact with the support surface other risk factors do not come into play. However, the research data shared by EPUAP, indicate that the prime causes of Stage 1 and 2 pressure injuries primarily come from shear stresses, with microclimate being critical in many cases. Stage 3 and 4 skin injuries are more related to the effects of pressure on deep tissues, but the percentage of people with these injuries is relatively small.

Deciding factors in prescribing a mattress:

Comfort Support Usability Mobility

FUNCTIONAL, PATIENTCENTRED, AND PRACTICAL FACTORS Four aspects were listed as possible patient and practical factors that might be taken into account when deciding which mattress to prescribe. Of these options, ‘comfort’ was listed first at a score of 92 out of 100. Next was ‘support for independence’ at 88, and ‘usability for staff’ at a similar score, then followed by ‘mobility on the mattress’ at 81 out of 100. Objectively assessing comfort is very difficult since this is such a subjective area! I might like a ‘firm’ mattress, whereas the next person might prefer a ‘soft’ mattress. Usability for staff is an important area, since many medical mattresses made out of polyurethane foam, for example, are too heavy to lift or turn by one person – whereas those made from such as 3D spun thermoplastic elastomers (see Figure 1 for an example) can be light enough for one person to handle. Mobility on the mattress is an interesting one. To obtain maximum pressure redistribution, the person’s body needs to be immersed as far as possible into the mattress surface. However, the more the immersion, the

92/100 88/100 88/100 81/100

heat build-up may be greater, and the more difficult it becomes to change position. Changing position regularly is one of the best means to protect the skin from pressure build up over time. There are ISO standards published and under development that can provide objective comparative measures as to a mattress’s properties in relation to immersion and microclimate. ‘Supportiveness’ is a different matter, and can relate to the stability properties of the mattress core material – how supportive are these, and to what extent do the materials ‘push back’ to aid in changing position in bed, and when at the edge of the mattress to aid patient transfer.

There are no published objective tests as yet, but this is an important area under consideration. PRACTICAL AND SYSTEM-LEVEL CONSIDERATIONS In the survey, there were six aspects listed. ‘Cleanability/infection control’, which together with ‘fire safety compliance’, came first with scores of 99 out of 100. ‘Durability/longevity’ next at 98/100, ‘inspectability’ at 95/100, ‘transportability/handling’ at 94/100, and then ‘cost’ at 89/100. Fire safety has to be there and tested for, though mattress (unlike cushion) flammability testing is still based on furnishing tests including a smouldering cigarette test, where there is no such thing as a standard cigarette! The subject of cost is different in different hands. There’s the initial purchase price, but to what extent is that reviewed against the life of the product, its maintenance costs, and its disposal costs at the end of life? A further aspect of overall ‘cost’ is how well the product prevented skin tissue

Figure 1. The NEST thermoplastic elastomer filled mattress3

damage, and thereby saved nursing and other potential clinical costs? Cleanability and inspectability often stops at the cover, but it’s the risks from strikethrough through the cover into the mattress core that needs most to be managed. Washing the core of a polyurethane foam mattress is not practical, and as a result a large number have a short usable life, and end up in landfill or incinerated early on. Modern materials such as 3D spun thermoplastic elastomers (for an example, see Figure 1) can be washed and disinfected quickly by hand or, ideally, by machine. SUSTAINABILITY When asked the question of “what sustainability factors matter most to you?”, ‘material longevity’ came top of the respondents’ list with a score of 88 per cent, followed by ‘recyclability’ at 71 per cent, ‘repairability’ at 59 per cent, ‘reduced waste’ at 47 per cent, and ‘carbon footprint’ at 18 per cent. It’s interesting that with the NHS campaigns for zero carbon, which are being mandated at procurement level enforcing manufacturers to comply across the majority of product categories, this does not show much prominence for the people surveyed. The aspects relating to longevity and recyclability come back to the construction materials of the mattress core, as discussed above. THE FUTURE? The survey did indicate some thoughts are starting to emerge around what properties of a mattress should be considered, beyond just pressure redistribution - much as the broader picture is considered in cushion selection, despite skin pressures being greater in the seated than in the recumbent position. Tissue integrity comes first. To protect against Stage 1 or 2 injuries we need to look at the mattress’s ability to protect against shear stress and friction harm. The materials of the cover to the mattress and of any covering sheets will be important alongside what the bed occupant is wearing. Friction damage to heels is common as a result of repetitive movements across the bed being made by the patient or sometimes during incorrect manual handling procedures. No

mattress will protect against these. Other protective products are available to mitigate these risks. On the other hand, many occupants’ skin health will be affected by the microclimate underneath them, and the more breathable the mattress core, the better the skin health of the individual. Positioning comes next, and has had less consideration to date. The materials in the core of the mattress can really help or hinder the person’s ability to reposition themselves, and the ability to get on and off the mattress. Many beds have profiling options to help the occupant to sit up to some degree to read, communicate, etc. The mattress has to be able to respond to the bends and stresses involved. This functionality needs to be used with care, invoking knee break options where appropriate, because of the shear stresses they introduce to the skin tissues, especially around the pelvis and lower back. Attention also needs to be taken around the size and shape of the patient relative to the sectional areas of the bed. Finally, functionality. Comfort is rated as being the most important, but since this is a subjective concept, how can we measure it? It can make the difference between patient acceptance or rejection. Mattress effective life, weight, maintenance, cleanability, disposability, etc should also be important aspects when selecting a mattress for purchase or prescription. In future maybe these ‘Design for Life Roadmap’ aspects4 will move to having an objective score against them and thereby have an appropriate weighting in the selection process.
