BASIC LESSONS 1/2/3/4

Meet the e-zine team www.newinterfaceblog.com

Meet the e-zine team ! Hi there! We’re the editing team for the e-zine. Making an e-zine is a challenging job. There are so many things to do and check! We all have different roles in putting together the articles for the e-zine. You can read all about us below. In every lesson one of us will introduce you to different topics we are working on. Will you help us make the e-zine this year?

AMITA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Amita is 15 years old and editor-in-chief of the e-zine. She started a fashion blog three years ago. Her other interests are singing, dressmaking and reading. Amita’s parents are Indian and she and all of her family are vegetarians. She is also a supporter of animal rights. She wants to be a professional journalist.

LEE ASSISTANT EDITOR Lee is 14 years old and helps the editor-in-chief. He checks everything before it goes online. Lee plays bass guitar in a rock band. He can also play the harp and marímbula. Lee is from Jamaica. He was born in Montego Bay and first moved to San Francisco when he was four and then to Britain a year ago. Watch out, Lee loves playing jokes on his friends!

EVA JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR Eva is 12 years old. As junior assistant editor she helps Lee with the work. Her favourite hobby is reading; she knows all the hot new book releases! At the weekend she helps in a dogs home. She walks the dogs and cleans out the kennels. She also enjoys going to the woods or the beach with her own dog, Snickers.

TIM EDITORIAL ADVISOR Tim is 14 years old. He thinks of good stories for the e-zine. He also helps out the other writers when they get stuck. Tim’s mother is Dutch and his father is British. He is a huge football fan and watches the Eredivisie as well as the Premier League. He also likes Formula 1 racing, cricket, speed skating, cycling, and even darts. He is a movie buff too, and loves writing movie reviews for the e-zine.

DAMIAN GRAPHIC DESIGNER Damian is 13 years old and makes graphics, images and animated films for the e-zine. Damian is crazy about gaming and enjoys creating apps. But he isn’t at the computer all the time! He always has a notebook with him for his drawings. He draws on anything, even his school tests. That drives his teachers mad!

CAITLIN PHOTOGRAPHER Caitlin is 17 years old. She takes beautiful photos for the e-zine. She also edits all the photos that go online. She lives in Sydney, Australia but thanks to the internet that’s not a problem. She loves being outdoors and surfing with her three brothers. She also loves watching ballet and other forms of dance although she doesn’t dance herself anymore.

JOSH WEBMASTER Josh is 18 years old. He helped Amita start the e-zine. He now helps out with any technical problems. Josh studies Web Design and Technology at university. On Thursday and Friday nights he is a DJ at a local club. You can ask him to play you a song. You can even ask to see his tattoos.

CHLOE CONTRIBUTING WRITER Chloe is 13 years old and often writes for the e-zine. She has a twin brother, Nathan. But Nathan is not into writing. She loves shopping and travelling. Together with Nathan and her parents she has travelled to many places such as Cuba, the Falkland Islands, India and Japan. She also loves cooking and often bakes nice things for the e-zine student staff. Hmmm, we love it when she does that!

KAZEEM CONTRIBUTING WRITER Kazeem is 15 years old and often writes for the e-zine. Kazeem is from Iran. He moved to Britain four years ago. He lives with his parents and two brothers. His older sister still lives in Iran with her husband. Kazeem plays for the school’s cricket team and sometimes plays futsal. He also really likes comics. He loves going to comic book stores, but he never goes to conventions. He thinks dressing up as your favourite action hero is silly.

What our students say about the Go To club... Meet Alex Evans! Hi, I am Alex and I’m 14 years old. I live in the centre of York. I haven’t got any brothers, but I have two sisters. Jade is 15 and Rosie is 11. Their hobby is dancing. I’m in form 10C at Sandringham High School and I’m a Go To mentor. I’m not good at homework, but I am good at talking! I hang out in the Go To room at lunchtimes. Kids come and ask me questions. They’re sometimes not happy and they want to chat. In the Go To room you can use the Internet and there’s a Wii. It’s not just for problems! There are also lots of biscuits. The teachers can’t eat them – they’re just for us!

Here’s Alex’s sister, Jade. What does she say about her brother? Hi, I’m Jade Evans. I am 15 and I’m in form 11C. In my free time, I enjoy street dancing with my sister. Alex is my little brother. My sister and I are very pleased that Alex is a Go To mentor. He likes sport and he’s crazy about music. He’s really good at tennis and basketball. He’s not shy and he can’t stop talking! Is he a good Go To mentor? Yes, I think he is! The Go To club is great if you’re new at school, or want to meet new friends.

Meet Savannah Richards! She’s not worried about school anymore ... Hi, my name is Savannah and I’m 13 years old. I am really keen on swimming. I also love roller-skating! I live in a small village near York. I live with my mum and I’m an only child. I’m very shy and I sometimes find school difficult. My teacher told me about this club. The Go To mentors are great! They’re really kind to me. I’m not worried about school anymore. Now I want to be a Go To mentor! I know how it feels to be lonely. I want to help kids that feel lonely.

Here’s Alfie. He’s 11. Is he happy with the Go To club? Hello, I’m Alfie Abel. I live in York, five minutes from Sandringham High School. I’ve got a twin sister called Megan. We’re not in the same class. We are totally different! She’s very confident. I love chocolate, but her favourite food is pizza! I like the school, but it’s very big! Savannah helps me when I’m lost. She’s quiet and very friendly. Am I happy with the Go To club? Yes, I think it’s an awesome idea! It’s an easy way to meet new people. I come here at lunchtime with my friends to play on the Wii.

Getting to know you EVA ‘My friends say that I always have my nose stuck in a book- it’s true! But I do have other hobbies too: I love animals, especially my dog, Snickers. What about you, do you share the same interests as your friends? Or do you all like doing different things?’

Are you interested in acting?

Are you looking for an exciting new activity? If your answer is ‘yes’, email me!

I’m planning a school drama club for students aged 13 and older. benhann99@gmail.com

Hi Ben,

Hi Stella,

Hi Ben,

My name is Stella and I’m in form 8B. I’m emailing you because my brother, Louis, tells me you want to start a drama club at school. That’s an excellent idea! Can I join the club, please?

How are you doing? It’s Ben here. Thanks for your email about my drama club. It starts in September, on Mondays.

I’m thirteen years old, and yes, Louis is my brother! Isn’t he in the same form as you? I’m quite tall with long, brown hair and blue eyes. I love acting. Most of my friends don’t enjoy drama. They are into tennis and netball, but I’m not very sporty! What about you? Aren’t you quite young to be organising a club?

Tell me a bit more about yourself – are you Louis Jones’ sister?

Thanks, Ben Stella

Hey Stella,

Hi Ben,

Hey Stella,

I’m fifteen and I’m in form 10C. I’m from America and in American schools, teachers encourage us to start our own clubs. I enjoy acting and singing and I’m learning to dance, too. I want to put on a show with other students at school. What’s your favourite show? And do you know my sister, Zoe? She is in year 8, too. The drama club idea is hers, really.

My favourite show is The Wizard of Oz! I think I know your sister. Is she small, with blonde, curly hair and brown eyes? She’s got an American accent, hasn’t she?

Yeah, that’s Zoe! We are both into acting. Meet us at lunchtime in the school hall on September 10th. So far, about twenty people are going to join the club. That’s funny that the Wizard of Oz is your favourite show- it’s mine, too!

We do love to hang out together and listen to our favourite music and watch movies. What do you like to do at a sleepover?’

PROJECT

Working on the e-zine AMITA ‘The e-zine is an online magazine and all of its content is made for and by students. As the editor-in-chief I decide what goes in. You can help us by contributing some of your work. In each unit there are three projects to choose from. You can find the instructions for them in your Workbook. When you're finished, you can submit your work to the e-zine.’

THE WORLD'S GREATEST GRAN

MAKE A ‘WORD CLOUD’

The e-zine is organising a Greatest Hero Competition. You are going to make a presentation about your personal hero. Not anybody famous, but somebody close to you: a member of your family, a friend, maybe even a teacher. Then you are going to record a nomination for the Greatest Hero Competition. Is your hero going to be the greatest hero of them all?

You are going to create a word cloud for a classmate. Word clouds show words and phrases in a particular shape or design. You are going to find out as much as you can about your classmate and create a special word cloud for him or her.

2 DESIGN A SPORTS EVENT REGISTRATION FORM Your local sports club is organising a major sports event and wants as many competitors as possible. You decide to put a registration form in the e-zine, so that your readers can sign up for the event. You are going to design this registration form. Your challenge is to make it look cool!

The band is on tour LEE ‘I play in a rock band and sometimes we have gigs at the weekend. It is a lot of fun but we are not famous. The really big stars can ask for crazy things at gigs. Like a hundred blue M&Ms. Or a completely white dressing room. Wouldn’t that be great? I would ask for something crazy, like a gold toilet. What would you ask for?’

A From: Nora To: Jules Hi Jules! How are you? I hope you’re OK. Remember that Australian band called The Red Bananas? They are my absolute favourite band. Well, guess what ... they are going to do a European tour! Their first concert is going to be in London! And the best part is: I’ve got tickets!!! They’re a birthday present from my brother.

Hi Nora!

Hi Jules,

Wow, you’re so lucky! I wanted to get tickets myself, but they were already sold out. Thank you for inviting me. I’d love to go to the gig with you! I’m not allowed to take the train by myself at night. But my dad wants to take us there and pick us up after the gig. We can be at your house at seven o’clock. Is that OK?

I am so happy that you can come and that your dad can take us. I will be ready at seven on Thursday. I am so excited! Kim’s party is at half past six, so I can come to your house at six. Then we can go to Kim’s house together.

By the way, what time are you going to pick me up for Kim’s party tomorrow?

See you soon, Love, Nora

The winner takes it all! KAZEEM ‘I listen to the radio a lot to improve my English. Last year, the DJs were giving away tickets to see my favourite band. I didn’t know it cost money to send a text message, so I texted more than a hundred times. My dad was so angry! And I didn’t even win the tickets! If you could win tickets to see any artist (dead or alive), who would you choose?'

Are you going to the festival? CHLOE ‘Summer is my favourite time of the year. Not just because it’s warm and sunny, but because of all the festivals! I go to two or three festivals every summer and they are so much fun! I always go with a group of friends who all love music as much as I do. We love it so much that we don’t even go on holiday; that’s too expensive! Would you ever skip your holiday for something else?’

DAN DAN

No, I haven’t. What is it?
