Finding Your Place: Madeline Perrotta, Contributing Writer

The Tallahassee Police Department reported over 1600 burglaries in Tallahassee in the last six months, according to local radio station 103.1. This affects not only Tallahassee locals but also students who are looking at future housing plans. In early spring semester, students at Florida State University look at the housing options for fall semester. A poll of 35 FSU students SFWFBMFE UIBU MPDBUJPO mOBODFT BOE safety were all important issues. LOCATION Students at FSU selected location as their top priority in securing housing. Memories of Bundy continue at FSU, yet the tales of his gruesome murders are only known in varying degrees by current and past students. “I know he killed the Chi O’s and I know they caught him. Bundy contested that a fair trial was impossible in Tallahassee, so he petitioned to move his trial somewhere else and it was granted multiple times. Although the murders happened 35 years ago, the memory is still prevalent on campus today. “Florida State’s innocence was lost. There was a time when people didn’t lock their doors, said Mark Zeigler, a Communications professor who has had a particular interest in the case. According to Zeigler, the murders also changed how FSU dealt with tragedy. “It changed and tested how we respond to tragedies as institutions, Zeigler said. “Now we have close contact with the families. Besides that, not much information is known about how the murders affect today’s Chi Omegas. They have declined to comment. “It certainly stigmatized Chi Omega. They won’t talk about it. Every time we have tried to talk to Chi Omega, whether it be on the national level or the local level, they have refused to talk about it, said Ensley.

The Oak, where Bundy stayed, has since burned down. It is an empty lot amongst fraternity houses. According to Ensley, homeless people sometimes inhabited the lot. Although he doesn’t always think about it, whenever Rudolph passes by the Chi Omega house with a friend visiting the campus, he mentions the murder. The house, located next to the iconic Sweet Shop, is a testament to a darker part of FSU history. “When you drive down Jefferson and you go by where that happened, it just seems like such a happy little place and you think about the horrible thing that occurred there. I don’t sit around and brood about it, but it crosses my mind, said Zeigler.

SEEKING SHELTER Anjali Ajmani, Staff Writer

The 2013 Big Bend Homelessness Coalition Survey revealed that 1002 people living in Tallahassee slept in an emergency shelter or outside on Sunday, January 27. The survey had two purposes: to count the number of homeless people in the community on one particular day, and to see how many homeless are in need of housing due to medical issues. The results of the survey will be used to gauge the funding from the government to homeless services needed for next year. Of those 1002, 90 are children, 655 are African American, 262 are disabled, 175 are Veterans, and 248 are unsheltered. 166 are victims of abuse and 182 people’s health were listed to be at risk. The only shelter in the Big Bend area that provides services and treatment to its people for free is The Shelter of Tallahassee Leon. The Shelter of Tallahassee Leon opened on West Tennessee on November 24, 1991. In its early days, the shelter group only opened in the winter months, but the high numbers of homeless people in the city proved the need for a shelter that operated all year. Crucial services and technology were added to the facility as years passed. These included a laundry system, more lodging, better food, shower facilities, and other services such as those for legal issues and mental health. Not many local shelters take in the mentally ill or the physically limited. The Renaissance Community Center provides many of the same services as The Shelter of Tallahassee Leon. In addition, it provides day storage so that homeless have a place to leave their belongings while they go to job interviews. Jason Davis receives help and support from the RCC because he was turned away from a shelter due to his medical limitations. “It’s the only place that can help you,” Davis said. “It can get you things that you need.” Davis explained his daily struggles. “It’s a lot of work to keep yourself out of trouble, to keep yourself fed, to keep your clothes clean, everything ready to go every day, Davis said. “It’s 24/7. There’s no day off. I’d love to have a day off.” Monique Ellsworth, the volunteer coordinator at the RCC, explained the increase in homeless people in the Tallahassee area. In 2011, the survey recorded 683 people living in shelters or outside. Since then, survey methods have improved, accounting for people living outside of shelters who previously went unrecorded. Though the survey methods have improved, Ellsworth said the increase in homeless people has also been affected by the state of the economy. Working with the increasing number of homeless has changed the way she views homelessness. “Working with this population is very humbling because I realize that I think everyone is three bad moves from being in this position or falling on hard times. People that are homeless don’t want to be homeless,” Ellsworth said.

ecently, Harvard geneticist George Church declared that he believed it is possible for scientists to clone a half-human, half Neanderthal using the Neanderthal genome. The Yeti interviewed Dr. Geoffrey Thomas, an anthropology professor at FSU, about what it would mean to live among Neanderthals.

ECHOES OF THE PAST Sam Levine, Staff Writer

Q

So what can you tell us about Neanderthals?

Dr. GT: 5IFZ XFSF mSTU SFDPHOJ[FE JO JO the Neander valley in Germany. And the actual valley of Neander Thal, in Germany, has a “t sound, so technically they’re Neandertals rather than Neanderthals. They’re our closest relatives in terms of hominins, and there’s been a longstanding debate about what exactly happened UP UIFN "SPVOE ZFBST BHP UIFZ EJTBQpeared from the fossil record. There’s been a lot of debate about modern humans coming into the area shortly before that in Europe around #1 5IFSF NBZ IBWF CFFO DPNQFUJtion; there may have been interbreeding. The big debate is: Were they swallowed up by the modern human gene pool or were they just outcompeted and went extinct? Their population had been declining for a good period of time before modern humans entered Europe. So UIFSF XBT B IVHF JOnVY PG NPEFSO IVNBO HFOFT and a very limited number of Neanderthals by the time they got to Western Europe, in France. This is the last area where Neanderthals are found, at least that we know of so far.

Q

George Church claims there is a possibility of recreating a Neanderthal based on the Neanderthal genome and fertilization of a human egg. Is that, logically and scientifically, a possibility?

Dr. GT: I don’t think currently it is, and I think he came back and said, “I don’t mean right now. It would be cool, if we could, but there’s a huge heap of ethical issues that you have to come up with in terms of growing an egg. What woman would actually volunteer to grow a Neanderthal hybrid? Nor do we necessarily IBWF UIF UFDIOPMPHZ UP EP UIBU ZFU #VU TJODF we do have the Neanderthal genome pretty well mapped. Technically, theoretically I guess it could be possible in the future when we have more technology and a better idea of genetics and cloning and all that kind of stuff.

Q

Let’s talk a little bit about the ethics involved in Church’s claims.

Dr. GT: Well, I think any kind of cloning of a IVNBO CFJOH BVUPNBUJDBMMZ TIPPUT VQ SFE nBHT let alone an extinct form of prehistoric human— especially for that individual—if it actually became a viable, fertile offspring that actually grew into a human being. I don’t think it would be fun to be that individual. Nor do I think some individuals, or some groups of people, would really approve of doing things like that.

Q

As far as physical attributes go, how similar would this Neanderthal hybrid be to a modern human?

Dr. GT: I mean that’s hard to answer. We have a potential kind of fossil hybrid with the lago vello child, who looks like he has modern crania, but Neanderthal postcrania [the rest of the skeleton], with very shortened arms and short legs for cold adaptation. It’s tough to say. I would think he would just look slightly odd. but I guess it also depends on the mixture of genetics. We have this kind of one genome with GFSUJMJ[BUJPO BOE SFDPNCJOBUJPO BOE XJUI UIF LJOE of genetics that go on with producing a fetus— an embryo— it’s hard to say exactly. Would he look more Neanderthal-like? Would he look more human-like? Flip a coin.

Q

I read in an article about the possible susceptibility to diseases that we’re absolutely immune to now. Do you think that genetically he would lack an ability to repel certain viruses and bacteriological infections that we’re used to today?

Dr. GT: Honestly I’m not sure. I mean he’s going to get some of that from the human. So, again, it just kind of depends on if he is taking more human DNA or more Neanderthal DNA? It probably would be more susceptible to different kinds of viruses and illnesses. And that’s even one of the hypotheses as to why Neanderthals went extinct; it was because of UIF JOnVY PG NPEFSO IVNBOT GSPN "GSJDB 5IFZ were bringing all kinds of different bacteria and diseases and things that Neanderthals hadn’t been exposed to. So their extinction may even have been due to some illness or some diseases. Hopefully he would have some resistance from the human component of his genetics.

Q

How would you name a Neanderthal baby?

Dr. GT: (Laughs) Uh‌ Jasper.

So there you have it. Jasper, the mutant Neander-hu- man, is a possibility, but unlikely due to ethical and technological restraints. It’s also worth pointing out the sheer amazingness of the fact that scientists have Ă€JXUHG RXW DQG PDSSHG the genome of our closest relative, to the extent that birthing one in modern times is even a possibility. /r/Sexist; Reddit, Women, and Internet Culture By Keely Dorsey, conTRIBUTING WRITER Reddit.com is my least-safe place on the internet. I’ve been acquainted with the site for three years, and I am constantly confronted with the age-old saying, “there are no women on the internet. Perhaps they should add to that: “But if you are a woman on the internet, your opinion doesn’t count. A large part of the situation arises from the site having been created by male computer programmers, built up into a megalith of internet culture— a culture that places a high value on traditional, and exclusive, male “nerdiness. In my many years running in nerd circles online, I have found that they are, surprisingly, some of the most deplorably anti-women groups of people I have ever encountered. You’ll see a male user comment about being “forever alone, desperately wanting a girlfriend. Upon looking into his post history, dozens of other comments about women faking their interest in men, faking orgasms, being bitchy, always gossiping, and putting people in the “friendzone will be discovered. You have to wonder—what does this kind of man expect in return for his vitriol? The concept of the friendzone is one of the worst offenders, and it’s something that both men and women EJTDVTT CPUI PGnJOF BOE POMJOF *O CPUI instances, it makes me squirm—the idea is based upon the perception that a relationship is like a machine you put kindness into until sex comes out. move on. In the realm of Reddit, however, it’s usually the men who can be found clinging to the friendzone as the excuse for their loneliness. This is subtle sexism. There are worst kinds, and Reddit has had its share of them as well. To start? /r/Creepshots. /r/ Creepshots was a subreddit (a “subreddit meaning a subsecUJPO PG UIF TJUF JEFOUJmFE CZ B “/r/ placed before its title) that existed until a few months ago; the idea was to secretly take pictures of women’s breasts and butts to post them online. In the comments, those who frequented /r/creepshots would discuss Michael Brutsch, aka “violentacres camera angles and positions to get good pictures. Sometimes, opinions of our bodies, and we can’t someone would get caught taking protect ourselves from the men who their shot. last year following an outcry from the public after Anderson Cooper exposed it on CNN. Violentacrez helped run the subreddits /r/chokeabitch, /r/rapebait, /r/ hitler, /r/jewmerica, /r/misogyny, and /r/ incest. He also frequently posted to /r/ beatingwomen. Many of his actions were done deliberately to rile people up—and this often worked. After the /r/jailbait and /r/creepshots controversies, though, most complaints about Violentacrez were buried under mountains of support from other users bearing the banner of free speech, despite the fact that many of these users clamored to ban Gawker links on the website for exposing Violentacrez’s identity and for posting updates regarding both /r/creepshots and /r/ jailbait. It’s easy to sweep problems under the rug on Reddit—using the website’s ranking system that controls the ease of page access, you just downvote certain views into oblivion. There is a hive mind on the site: everyone shares the same opinion, and differing opinions are ridiculed. This happens not only in large subreddits, but also in the smaller ones. During the time when /r/creepshots was VOEFS mSF * PCTFSWFE POF GFNBMF VTFS PO /r/fsu trying to discuss the issue, as well as the portrayal of women in the more mainstream comments sections. A few others, male users, were offended by her comments, and they attacked her. They searched through

her post history and found out that she was overweight; they called her fat and jealous of the attention that other women receive on the website. They told her that her concerns did not matter. After a few more attempts, she stopped responding to their hateful outrage. For this reason, women often don’t get a voice on the site, except in /r/ twoxchromosomes and related subredEJUT UIBU EFBM TQFDJmDBMMZ XJUI XPNFO T interests and feminism. They’re places made by women for women, and in terms of Reddit, they are some of the only safe places for women to discuss problems without fear of judgment. One might assume that places like /r/relationships or /r/cooking would be safe from the mysoginy that plagues so much of Reddit due to the universal nature of their topics, but that is, unfortunately, not the case. On /r/cooking, I often see comments about most commercial chefs being men because they can “handle the work” and “don’t mind not having a family.” /r/Relationships is even worse— the advice is skewed depending on your gender. A man and a woman could have the same problem, but the man will be told to “dump the bitch; she’s cheating on you,” while a woman will be told, “talk to him; it’s probably a misunderstanding.” Browsing that subreddit used to be a guilty pleasure of mine, but over time, I gave it up. Sometimes relationship advice posts will leak onto larger subreddits like /r/Askreddit, and I cringe at those too. It’s a larger subreddit, so every problem is multiplied the deeper you read into the comments. Of these subreddits, /r/seduction is one of the most guilty when it comes to treating women like objects. The subreddit is centered on helping men get laid, and that, in itself, isn’t an issue. No, the problem is UIF DPNQMFUF PCKFDUJmDBUJPO PG UIF women these men are having sex with. The ladies they talk about are no longer people—they’re numbers on a scale. That girl you met at the bar last night? Melissa? Well, she’ll be “hb7” on /r/seduction. That stands for “hot babe,” plus a rating for her appearance on a scale of 1-10. Only celebrity women can earn a 10. No amount of violence, sexually

explicit images, or directly hateful speech can ever live up to the creeping feeling of worthlessness /r/seduction breeds. It’s not just men going to a bar to score. They plan every move in advance, study the words of the “masters” who got laid before them, and they practice picking up the ladies. There’s little transparency here, either. It’s a “let’s get together for a while and we’ll see how the future goes, but oops I didn’t call you the next day and you’ll never see me again,” situation. At the end of the night they come back to the subreddit, report on their progress, and get tips for next time. Redditors historically pride themselves on being open and accepting. Discussion of sex and masturbation is widespread and friendly, intense interest in nerdy things is welcome. With so many QFPQMF PO UIF TJUF ZPV PGUFO mOE DPPM stories or explanations of things from a perspective you wouldn’t normally run into (teaching from teachers, house searches from policemen, etc). Good things, altruistic things, and extraordinarily progressive things happen on Reddit every day. But Reddit isn’t open and accepting towards everything, and that’s where the problems arise. It’s hard to retain a sense of self-worth as a woman. Everywhere you turn, the media is telling you that you’re not good enough, and that you have to do more to keep up. No one wants to be that 5 on the scale when all of their role models are 10s. Among the kitchen jokes and misled “female loving” males of Reddit, that sense of self-worth gets all the more slippery. Over time, I have stopped reading comments and stopped participating—I can’t exist on a site where I don’t matter as a person. I am not an object. I am not just a member of my gender. I am a human being who likes reading stories and talking to my friends; a person whose guilty pleasures consist of all night NBSBUIPOT PG 5IF 0GmDF BOE TBWJOH up for the new Harvest Moon game. I am both a woman and an individual, but Reddit really doesn’t want me to be either.

BATTLE ROYALE EXAMINING THE SOCIOECONOMICS OF ATHLETICS IN AMERICA

The issue of violence in sports is more relevant now than it has ever been. Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, made headlines by predicting that the violence in football will lead to the game becoming extinct in 30 years. “I’ve seen the consequences of playing this game...I’ve seen it. I understand it. You look at the parents who are raising their children now. A lot of them are saying, ‘my son isn’t playing this. I’m going to do whatever I can to make sure he don’t.’ That tells you, that’s the future, admitted Pollard during Super Bowl Media Week. Fellow Ravens safety Ed Reed, also admitted during media week that there are days where he has trouble remembering anything, but adds that he “signed up for this. In the aftermath of these comments, one must wonder if the league needs to maintain safety regulations to keep up with the increasing size, speed, and strength of today’s (and tomorrow’s) players if athletes continue to “sign up for it. Facing an ever-fragile economy, many students see sports as their ticket out. They are willing to take the risks that come with a violent sport like football, as long as those risks come with million dollar checks. Head FSU Football athletic trainer, Jake Pfeil, attributes the now ubiquitous practice of “year round training for players as the primary factor in the dramatic physical growth of the average football player over the past few decades. While college athletics cannot authorize mandatory practices year round, the infamous “voluntary summer work-outs insure that athletes consistently get bigger (and, thus, more dangerous) all the time. The perception that these athletes will get left behind if they let up and relax during the offseason is an accurate one. Student athletes are feeling the pressure, ensuring improvement. At FSU, the athletics department tries to make sure student-athletes get enough rest during the off-season, but the cut-throat competition demands athletes stay in peak condition 24/7, 365 days a year. With all of the added pressure, Pfeil has noticed an increase in sports hernias that have a correlation with the unregulated practice of yearround training. The stark, socio-economic disparity between student-athletes needs to be considered in college athletics. With athletes coming from upper-middle class backgrounds, getting bigger and better with top-notch equipment has been second nature since childhood; they are able to remain in peak condition while still having time for other social activities. Meanwhile, athletes who do not have this background often view sports as their ticket out of poverty. This drive, combined with the aforementioned disadvantages, leads athletes to over-work themselves. While it is easy to critique GSPN BGBS JU JT GBS NPSF EJGmDVMU UP BDUVBMMZ convince these kids that taking some time off is needed when bread needs to

be put on the table. “It is fair to say that participation in major college football and the NFL, is by and large disproportionately represented by players hailing from working class backgrounds. The majority of upper-middle class kids have a plethora of options with which to choose from, in terms of activities and life experiences, whereas for many working-class kids, football is seen as a plausible escape from the day to day struggles they experience in their homes and communities, said FSU Sociology of Sport Professor Dr. John Taylor. This type of disparity between classes has been seen before—in the military. It is critical that we consciously recognize and give thought to why there are, in relation to the overall population, a vastly disproportionate percentage of those from poor and working class backgrounds playing our modern-day gladiator sport of football? Furthermore, why do military demographics continue UP SFnFDU UIF TBNF QIFOPNFOPO 5IF answer indicates a lack of shared TBDSJmDF BDSPTT DMBTT CBTFE CPVOEBSJFT with regards to participation in football, and overseas military service in combat related missions. The impoverished social class dominating in modern football is similar to the predominantly working-class modern armed forces. The issue really becomes: Do we become desensitized to societal-sanctioned violence because the middle to upper classes are insulated from feeling the effects of it? While there are no black-andwhite answers to such large questions, history seems to indicate, yes. Former Senator Jim Webb of Virginia is disgusted by how war has become primarily fought by the poor and working class in America, “Regarding the economic imbalance in our country, I am reminded of the situation President Theodore Roosevelt faced in the early days of the 20th century [regarding robber barons]. America was then, as now, drifting apart along class lines. Does what Former Senator Webb said about the military ring true in the sports world? The connection between military service and an implicitly felt pressure, which is typically socioeconomic in nature, to play the game of football is absolutely evident and pervasively found amongst working class and impoverished youth. While this same pressure can be found from family members or from sociological interaction in upper middle class to wealthy kids, it is not a pressure that is predicated by the desire to escape their social and economic plights. The parallel is never absolute, but it serves the purpose of highlighting the profound disparities between the TPDJFUBM JEFBM PG iTIBSFE TBDSJmDF w BO ideal playing itself out with regards to the disproportionate breakdown of who plays the most violent sports, and who HPFT PGG BOE mHIUT PO UIF GSPOUMJOFT JO foreign wars.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME Kelly Sawtelle, Arts & Life Editor

After an exciting and successful 2012 season, Florida State Baseball proved they are not to be underestimated in 2013. Their hard work has not gone unnoticed, having begun the season with impressive rankings in a number of pre-season polls. Most notably, the USA Today Coaches Poll voted the Seminoles to their highest ranking this year at #9. The rankings not only represent what FSU baseball has accomplished, but also serve as a warning to the competition. The Seminoles ended last season with an impressive list of accomplishments. This year the Seminoles start fresh; newbies join the seasoned veterans, and Coach Mike Martin commands the FSU baseball team for his 34th season as the Seminoles’ fearless leader.

Familiar Faces The Seminoles are starting this season with nineteen returning players. Those returning players, solidify an offense coming in with undeniable strength. Senior and captain, Justin Gonzalez, returns to lead the offense as the top hitter with 42 runs scored, 54 hits, 9 home runs, 42 RBIs, as well as having 13 stolen bases. The returning pitching staff also hosts some strong veterans. Sophomore and left-handed pitcher, Brandon Leibrandt, ended last season with an ERA (10+ innings pitched) of 2.82, pitched a grand total of 99.0 innings, and led all Seminole pitchers with 83 strikeouts. Unfortunately righthanded pitcher, Mike Compton, who led the team

FEELING Â STRESSED? The Yeti

You’re not alon e! Ian Schuster, Contributing Writer

“This semester is going to kill me. I’ve caught myself saying it more than once, and a trip to Strozier isn’t complete without seeing at least one student hyperventilating behind a mountain of homework. We accept it as the cost of doing well in school, but what havoc does this stress really wreak? Under relentless pressure, we know our bodies can fall prey to illness, and perhaps you have even had to take a few days off due to it. What consideration, then, do we owe something we can’t always see—our mental well-being? The reality is that an estimated 27 percent of college students experience some form of mental illness, such as depression, a n x i e t y

22

TheYetiOnline.com

disorders, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder. These illnesses often manifest in a person’s college years, agitated by the stress of new people, classes and surroundings. With 32,201 enrolled undergraduates and 6,121 new freshmen in 2012, FSU can be estimated to have as many as 8,694 students who suffer from a diagnosable mental illness (The Princeton Review, 2012). Unfortunately, these problems are often stigmatized, leading to fewer people seeking treatment. This raises the important question: what we can do to combat the problem? To help alleviate the burden brought on by these disorders, we can seek to mitigate their concerning factors. Stress, a major factor in overall health, comes in many forms. The chronic, routine stress of college life can seem unmanageable, but through a little work, becomes much easier to take on. The National Institute of Mental Health provides that recognition of symptoms, good organization, proper physical health and positive outlets are key factors in supporting good mental health and reducing overall stress. The most important factor is recognizing a problem where one exists. Do you ever feel like you’ll never fall asleep at night or like you might just snap on the next person that talks to you? We know when we are stressed but seldom take the time to recognize the symptoms and what they mean. If you are struggling with low energy or feel like a beer at the end of the day is the only way to calm your nerves, you may be dealing with overlooked stress. Especially when turning to smoking, drinking or drugs, our coping methods are often counterintuitive and can lead to further problems. Particularly under the strain of school, physical health is paramount to feeling good about ourselves and supporting mental wellness. Diet and exercise are two key aspects in promoting physical health. Stress is known to deplete vital nutrients—ones that are not replaced under stress-prone eating behaviors—and can lead to physical ailments such as XOFHUV DFLG UHà X[ colitis, and more.

These ailments are taxing to our bodies, and reduce the ability to manage other illnesses, such as depression or anxiety. Proper nutrition is vital to supporting our immune system and health. Paired with smart eating habits, exercise helps boost immune response and the production of neurotransmitters responsible for positive changes in mood and perception. (NCBI, 1995.) The component of exercise has long been known to reduce stress, and new research shows that even a 10-minute walk may be as effective as a 45-minute workout at reducing stress levels. Researchers also found that individuals who got, “regular vigorous exercise were 25 percent less likely to develop depression or an anxiety disorder over the next Ă€YH \HDUV Âľ The crux of the situation, then, is how WR Ă€W LQ WKH WLPH WR HDW ULJKW DQG H[HUFLVH ,W is no easy or enjoyable thing, but even I can DWWHVW WR WKH EHQHĂ€WV RI RUJDQL]DWLRQ &UHDWLQJ a schedule to run your day may seem tedious, DQG \RXU OLIH WRR HUUDWLF WR Ă€W LQWR LW EXW FRQsistency and the positive reinforcement that comes from a sense of accomplishment goes a long way to putting your mind at ease. If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself. Make your goal to plan out your next Monday through Friday and to stick to the plan. Nothing is too small to put down, from dinners, homework and even sleep times—not forgetting some downtime. Take a minute to organize your class PDWHULDOV LQWR IROGHUV Ă€OHV RU ZKDWHYHU PHWKRG works for you. The reduced stress of knowing where everything is and when you have to do what will take a huge bulk of worry off your shoulders throughout the week, and you may be surprised with how much free time you end up having. Lastly, don’t be afraid of failure. Give yourself credit for what you accomplish, but don’t be afraid to reach out for what you can’t. A good support system is crucial to sustaining your mental health. The Florida State University has many systems in place to provide support to students in crisis. The University Counseling Center [(850) 644-2003] is available to students on both an individual basis, as well as providing group sessions. By creating awareness, we can get support to those who need it, and end the stigmatization of mental illness. Through education, friends and community support, we gird ourselves against the mental demands of the college lifestyle and help prevent crisis.

Like the rest of us, child actors stop being cute and turn into gangly, pubescent monsters that only vaguely resemble their former selves. Great examples include Jonathon Lipnicki who played the adorable, fat kid in Jerry Maguire and Haley Joel Osment of Sixth Sense. For a lesson in how to transition successfully from the Disney channel to superstardom, one needs only to look at Shia LaBeouf‘s inexplicable rise to fame. LaBeouf started by appearing in small roles on Disney Channel Original Series, and one memorable turn as the injured school mascot on the cult favorite Freaks and Geeks garnered a dream job as a lead in Even Stevens. Chinese calendars say it is the year of the snake, but as far as fashion is concerned, it's the season for Geminis and zebras. Emerald and stripes are two main facets of spring apparel in 2013. Let’s take a look at this spring's fashion forecast with insights from Jennifer Russell, a Florida State University graduate with a Master’s of Science in Fashion Merchandising. Here's a list of what fashion gurus are calling must-haves for this spring.

Emerald You're in luck, Geminis. Your birthstone is one of ten hot colors chosen by Pantone Color Institute. This year’s Pantone Fahion color report is comprised of African Violet, Monaco Blue, Nectarine, Poppy Red, Lemon Zest, and more. “Emerald is a big color for Pantone this season,” Jennifer said, I don't know how they do it, but they make these predictions every season and they make sense. I enjoyed that period as an actor, working in regional theatre and on Broadway, but as time passed I became more interested

Arts & Life would actually accept contracts from theatre companies as an actor on the condition that I could direct for them—in their second space, anywhere. In time, my directing career took off and eventually I was asked to be the Artistic Director at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and that was a whole new learning experience, heading up a large theatre organization.

pending, I contacted him and I met with him to inquire which last act he preferred I used in my production. We continued to correspond and communicate and he developed an interest in my work at the Alliance Theatre. He would often come down to see my productions there. It could be very nerve-wracking sitting next to him, when I had directed one of his plays, I can tell you. But, he seemed to like my work and eventually we premiered a play of his, Tiger Tale, at the theatre.

YETI: Is there a moment that you FC: Yes, I’ve been very grateful that my career has taken such a winding, adventurous route—actor, director, artistic director and now teacher. Before I came to FSU, I had been at the helm of the Alliance Theatre for sixteen years and I was ready for a change and a new direction. While at the Alliance, I had started an acting school and I taught master classes for professional actors there and I knew that I had a bent and a love for teaching. Oddly, I was approached by the FSU School of Theatre as I was leaving the Alliance and was asked to come down to Tallahassee to consider a teaching position. I was instinctually drawn to the whole atmosphere of the School and the College and I have been continually challenged and stimulated by the work here every since. Currently, I am Director of the MFA Directing Program and I teach undergraduate BFA acting classes. I also direct at least one of the productions we do in our FSU theatre subscription season and in off-time, I still work in professional theatre.

YETI: I’ve heard you directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams. What was it like working with Mr. Williams?

FC: Certainly, meeting and coming to know and work with an artist of the magnitude of Tennessee Williams was among those “awesome moments. But I have also been privileged to work with so many dedicated artisans—actors, writers, designers, other directors—over the years. I never lose my awe in the face of great talent and I am very grateful that I’ve been able to experience so many of those kinds of breathless moments in this profession.

YETI: What was it like as an actor performing on Broadway, as opposed to other regional productions?

FC: Doing eight performances a week on Broadway requires the stamina and the discipline of an athlete. I have the highest respect for those actors who have spent years and years adhering to such regimentation. The excessive commercial pressures of New York make doing art WKHUH YHU\ GLIÀFXOW DQG ,ҋP QRW VXUH VRPH of the best theatre isn’t being produced in other parts of the country. In fact, so many shows move to Broadway from the regions. Personally, having grown up in the South myself, it has had meaning for me that I’ve been able to work and to foster theatre as an art form in my own region. Recently at a Georgia Theatre Conference that was held in my own hometown, I was awarded a proclamation of appreciation for my work in the theatre by the town mayor and I can’t think of an award that has meant more to me during my career.

YETI: Putting on a play must be loads of work. What would you consider the easiest and hardest parts of production,

namely preproduction?

FC: I love the pre-production work, when I allow the play to seize my imagination and to share and to translate those visions with designers—to explore and invent “the world of the play. I’ve always had a strong interest in the visual arts and I am usually captivated by my work with set, lighting and costume designers. Of course, I have the utmost respect for the work the actor brings to the process. They are the daring, courageous ones, the ones who put it on the line, who face those audiences from night to night. Actors are such imaginative creatures and most of the best ideas in my own work as a director are generated by actors.

YETI: You mentioned you were amidst rehearsals for Sping Awakening. What personally interested you to direct this SURMHFW"

FC: I remember vividly when I saw the show on Broadway how uplifted DQG UHYLYLÀHG , ZDV ÀQGLQJ WKLV NLQG RI work being done—and selling out, no less—in the midst of the commercial theatre center of the world. The musical is an interpretation of the play that was written by the German playwright Frank Wedekind at the turn of the century and it was considered rather avantJDUGH HYHQ WKHQ , DOZD\V HQMR\ GRLQJ musicals because they generally allow the director more scope in translating them, not unlike Shakespeare in some respects. In addition to its modern and moving musical score, the script of Spring Awakening offers genuine challenges to the actors and to me as a storyteller. It was very modern and quite scandalous actually at the time it was written and I think, given its musical translation, it speaks to audiences vividly today.

YETI: Is there any advice you would like to give to students, or other young people, looking to participate in a production or get started in a career of theatre/acting/ playwriting?

FC: Well, considering a career in the theatre isn’t a decision to be made lightly. In fact, I’m not sure one shouldn’t feel absolutely compelled or “called to that choice. It’s the most demanding, draining, competitive work imaginable DQG LW LV WKH PRVW MR\RXV ULGH RI D OLIH WLPH

I'm native to the local scenery here in Tallahassee, and find much of my inspiration for writing comes from the people of this town that I spend my time with. I will be graduating from FSU in the summer of 2013 with my B.A. in Creative Writing and Psychology. I've never been published before, and am beyond stoked for my first publication to be here in my beloved hometown: Tallaclassy, FL, USA.
