Hi, I am the publisher for all The Works magazines, I live in Abbeydale with my baby son, daughter, husband and mad cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh! For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email info@theworkslocal.com. As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Twyver Women’s Institute Sandra welcomed everyone to our May meeting. We were shown the beautiful card made by Chris Simpson, which won the competition at the Spring Show. This lovely Diamond Jubilee card is now to be posted to HM Queen and we all agreed that it was something our WI could be proud of - thanks to Chris. Janine is hoping to form a choir for the WI Choir of the Centenary in 2015 so encouraged us all to consider joining as she has now found a choir leader. There was mention of the Jubilee Group meeting at St Barnabas Church Hall; the trips to Wells, plus Clark's village, and Highclere Castle; a Garden Party at Cirencester Agricultural College as well as the 50miles sponsored run completed by a Gloucestershire WI member to aid the women of a village in Burundi setting up a market garden. We were also informed of an open competition - The Great Malvern Bake-Off - to be held at The Malvern Autumn show. The theme is 'The Queen's Diamond Jubilee' and chef Jean Christophe Novelli will be judging one of the classes of baking skills. We were reminded that Twyver WI is to arrange the refreshments at the Village Hall on the Saturday of 'Diamond Jubilee Weekend' Our speaker for the evening was Mr John Putley talking about the Roman and Medieval Barber. The Barber, Surgeon and Apothecary were separate trades and, generally, illness was dealt with by itinerants from religious orders such as friars. However in 1260, the Pope banned religious orders from spilling blood so from this date the barbers began to gain knowledge to set limbs and perform other operations. Any of the four 'humours' of blood, phlegm, black or yellow bile thought to be out of balance was deemed to be the reason for illness. To horrified groans, we were shown various 'tools' and blood letting implements. Blood letting was a popular 'cure' in medieval times as it was believed to be therapeutic to relieve the body of excess blood. Leeches were also used followed by 'cupping' and we were shown Mr Putley's 'pet' leech in a jam jar of water – his next feed of Mr Putley's own blood is due in August! Lots of the 'cures' still hold some relevance today although not much could prevent the many occurrences of 'plague', septicaemic, pneumonic or bubonic, the latter amazingly gave the best chance of survival. After this very interesting talk, refreshments were served, the raffle was drawn and birthday gifts distributed. Twyver WI meets at 7.30pm in Upton Village Hall on the 2nd Monday of each month. Please come and join us on Please come and join us on June 11th for a talk by Simon Grodentz of 'G Fitness' th about Nutrition and Fitness. July 9 will be our Summer's Evening Social Event.

Cheltenham’s newly opened Ultrasound Slimming company may well be the answer to all our prayers, a slimming device that gives your figure a little helping hand by removing those stubborn pockets of fat that won’t disappear however many times you diet and exercise. The process lasts 30 minutes, a maximum of 15 minutes in a chosen area and can be used to disperse fat in areas such as thighs, hips, stomach and arms. The ultrasound waves are delivered in pulses breaking down excess fat. The hand piece is used by the consultant gliding over the targeted area. You feel a very slight energy pulse, but there is no discomfort or soreness during or after treatment. In between sessions you should drink plenty of water, keep alcohol consumption to a minimum and ensure you are active to encourage lymph flow and blood circulation, which supports the removal of fat cells from the body. The number of sessions required depends on how many inches you want to lose. Two treatments per week are recommended over a 6 to 8 week period. Noticeable results are often visible after between 6 to 8 sessions, where you can expect to see smoother, firmer skin, a reduction in cellulite and reduced levels of body fat. A course of treatments can range from a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 20 sessions in any one area, and will vary depending on the area and volume of fat being targeted and the inch loss required. As this is a new treatment for most, Ultra Sound Slimming are inviting clients for a free consultation at their new salon in the Promenade, Cheltenham. So why not make an appointment and pop in during your next work break or shopping trip and make the most of their free consultation and offer to readers.

Dave’s top tips Sourcing supplies and information I often get asked, “Where can I source my materials or even get some design ideas”? Maybe you are looking at some options for an upcoming bathroom-remodeling project. The reply is usually to source the basic materials locally from a few of the big chain stores so if you should under order, then obtaining a few more tiles or fixings becomes less hassle. However the information about differing designs and options to your project can be limited by the experience of the staff that, “will be able to give advice on their own products”, but may have limited knowledge in other brands or available options to your project. With this in mind, and after the huge success of the “Dave’s top tips” editorial over the past years I have decided to help bridge the gap somewhat. I have created a website at www.dstevens999.co.uk with information not only about us, but also with a host of online tips including some very informative and humorous video tutorials. Along with allowing advertisers on the sidebars you should see some content aware advertising from other companies. For example, if you are reading a page about bathrooms, then you should see adverts displaying baths or taps. You may not get an exact match at these early days, but expect things to become more streamlined as the site is used. We hope you enjoy using the site and find its content useful and informative and do keep coming back as new tutorials and tips are being added frequently. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.
