Editor: Dennis Barnsley

I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Longlevens local to your homes for many years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds. I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine. For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email dennis@theworkslocal.com. As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate. A Sign of the Times! Once again the Economic Downturn has found another casualty in one of our newest local businesses. Olives a delicatessen, opened in March earlier this year, however the turnover and profit expectations of the owners failed to materialise as quickly as required and resulted in the business closing it’s doors for the final time in August However, as quickly as Olives closed, the REES Sandwich Bar & Deli immediately replaced it. Andy Rodway and his partner, Marie Urch, who happen to be expecting their first baby at the end of this year, own the new business. Andy is known in the local area for his C&R Landscaping business and it is from working in the Longlevens Community that triggered the idea that the area was in need of a place where people could purchase sandwiches and snacks during the day. Andy saw the premises in Cheltenham road as an ideal opportunity to set up a business firmly based on his original idea. Initially, REES will focus on establishing the Freshly Made sandwiches and snacks business. Special sandwich deals are offered, daily, to promote this initiative which aims to attract local residents, students and passing trade also. Plans to develop the Deli side of the business are in place but at this time there is only a limited number of products on sale, as Andy quite rightly, wants to ensure that they are stocking items that will sell regularly. Andy and Marie are also very keen to please their customers so you can help by letting them know the products that you would like to see made available in the Deli. Finally, let us as a Community help these Small Business owners to make a success of their venture and hope that there is a long-term future for the REES enterprise.

Free Local Editorial Promotion For Your Business Small businesses- as we are always looking to improve the quality of our local magazines, we would like to offer you a free full page (A5) editorial. If you would like to provide us with an interesting article (approx 200-400 words) which details more about what you offer, perhaps with some pictures then we would like to publish this in an edition of the magazines (subject to approval). If you have any questions please email info@theworkslocal.com. Full info and online magazines are at

Please mention TheWorksLocal when responding to adverts Longlevens Junior School – Environmental Initiatives With the new academic year well underway at Longlevens Junior school it is an opportune time to look at the initiatives that have recently been introduced by Head teacher Dave Smith and his staff. Outdoor Centre In line with the school’s policy of continually improving it’s eco environment, an Outdoor Centre and Forest School has been established under the leadership of teacher Shane Gue, who has been nominated to develop the Centre to it’s maximum potential. The Outdoor site is located within the school grounds and is well camouflaged, to not only provide protection from any severe weather conditions but also ensures that it stays out of view from unwanted intruders. Already several features have been established and include: an outdoor story telling classroom, a mature pond, an area for wood whittling and a shelter has been specifically designed as a bird watching platform for the children. There is no restricted access to the Outdoor area and the children are encouraged to use it, as often as possible for both play and educational purposes.

The Outdoor Area and Forest School taking shape The Royal Horticultural Society is promoting a “Getting Involved” initiative which encourages people to support community gardening groups and local schools. In line with this initiative Longlevens Junior school is seeking local adults to enrol and participate in the scheme. Local residents would be a valuable resource and provide much needed help in expanding the schools Outdoor Centre and Garden. Therefore any gardeners in our community, with a little time to spare and who are prepared to share their gardening experience and expertise would be most welcome to help. It is apparent from the number of well maintained gardens in our community, that there must be many amateur gardeners, with the horticultural knowledge, from which our school children would benefit greatly. I’m sure you would enjoy the involvement, so why not give it a try? Contact either Shane Gue at sgue@longlevens-jun.gloucs.sch.uk or Dave Smith at head@longlevensjun.gloucs.sch.uk for more details about how You can help to “grow” the Outdoor Centre at Longlevens Junior School. Litter Free Community Similarly the school is focussing on the challenge of clearing litter to improve the environment of the school and the local community also. The overall objective is to keep the community “Litter Free”! Actions to address this issue have recently commenced with the school grounds being targeted for immediate improvement. All the pupils remain vigilant in spotting and removing litter The school has been identifying not only the many sources of litter but is also identifying exactly where the litter finally rests. Invariably an element of the litter ends up in the gardens of local residenats. Therefore the school is keen to work closely with local residents to resolve the litter issue and aesthetically enhance the appearance of their gardens. Dave Smith would welcome any appropriate help or suggestions from within the Community to aid this scheme. In summary the Longlevens Junior School should be commended for these initiatives, which could have a profound effect not only on the school but also on our Community as a whole!

Please mention TheWorksLocal when responding to adverts Dee & Griffin secures Law Society's new quality mark Dee & Griffin in Gloucester has secured membership to the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process. Dee & Griffin underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process. Law Society President John Wotton said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process. “CQS improves efficiency with common, consistent standards and service levels and enables consumers to recognise practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. "Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standard by a solicitor. There are many different conveyancing service providers out there, making it difficult for home buyers to identify those which can ensure a safe and efficient level of service. Hamish Mason, Practice Manager says: "Dee & Griffin is delighted to have secured CQS status. It is recognition of the high standards we provide to our residential property clients and is a signal to future home buyers of the excellent service level we provide at what is often a stressful time for many people. “The overall beneficiaries will be clients who use Dee & Griffin when buying a home. They will receive a reliable, efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard." The scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS How to set out and check a room for square Floor tiling, carpets or any number of things around the home require a degree of setting out. Remember a quarter of an inch out at one end of a 12 foot room, means about 2 inches out at the other end. It is important to start any appropriate projects with straight and square lines and it is very easy to accomplish. The method is called 3,4,5 and for the technically minded is based on Pythagoras's theorem which we won't go into now! Suffice to say that if you measure along one wall 3 feet (or meters or any other unit), and along the other wall 4 of the same unit, the diagonal line in between the points should measure 5 units. If it does your walls are square, if it doesn't, you need to mark some points that are square to start your work. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Tristan Lewis, Wills & Probate Solicitor, Tayntons LLP, Gloucester supports regulation of Will writing Tristan Lewis from Tayntons LLP solicitors who is a member of the legal group, Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) fears thousands of people are putting themselves at risk of being cheated by unscrupulous salesmen who offer to write their wills but who are not adequately qualified, trained or insured. Last month the UK’s Legal Ombudsman highlighted dangers of using Will writing companies to Make Wills. The One Show also recently called for Will writing to be regulated to protect the public. A recent survey showed that 67% of consumers wrongly believe that all Will writers are solicitors and 82% of the 1,000 people polled thought that training and qualifications are required before someone can become a Will writer. In fact anyone can write a Will for payment. Local SFE member, Tristan Lewis confirmed that ‘Will writers need no training and they are not regulated so if you choose a Will writing company to do your Will you are taking a huge risk. I have heard some very unfortunate stories of clients who have used Will writers & their families are left to pick up the pieces as problems generally only come to light when you have died.’ Many people make Wills when they enter their senior years and are targeted by Will writing companies who often apply high-pressure selling techniques, offering wills for a low or discounted fee, then recommend themselves to be appointed as executors, selling other services without full advice, such as transferring the home into a trust in an attempt to avoid care fees. Terms and conditions can be poorly worded and difficult to understand. Will writers often claim they are significantly cheaper than solicitors but recent research carried out by Which? Magazine found on average the price of a Will from a Solicitor is £130 and from a Will writer is £107. Professionals, such as solicitors and legal executives are regulated, have relevant qualifications, undergo continual training, must be insured and provide redress if things were to go wrong. Given the protection you get by making a Will with a regulated professional the small difference in price is well worth it. For clear & practical advice on Wills, Trusts & Probate contact Tristan Lewis 01452 509094.

Please mention TheWorksLocal when responding to adverts Worcester Street and Kingsholm: Getting back to Normal For over 12 months now both residents and visitors to Gloucester have been aware of the havoc that the road works around Worcester Street and Kingsholm have caused. Small businesses in the area have suffered serious economic hardship during this time, however, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The road works is due for completion in early October when hopefully the area can get back to normal in time for the pre Christmas period. You would have thought with the poor state of the economy and the forced reduction in customers that these businesses would have closed for good. However, for these businesses to have survived is down to the sheer determination and character of their owners. So spare a thought for the Small business owners in this area and support them in their efforts to re establish themselves in their Community. The Business Owners below will warmly welcome you to their premises They include: Cheryl at C&A Catering or TJ’s as it is locally known, Belles Barber shop, Dees Hairdressing, Chris Duberley the Butchers, Garth at Discount Cycles, Kelly at Simply Beautiful and finally Keith and Mary from the Kingsholm Inn.
