Editor: Stacey Thomas

I am the publisher for all The Works magazines, I live in Gloucestershire with my baby daughter, husband and mad cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh! For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email info@theworkslocal.com. As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Babes In The Wood Just seven weeks after opening the largest Lemur Walk-through in the UK, West Midland Safari Park can announce the birth six Lemur babies, including two sets of twins! The tiny Ring Tailed youngsters - which were barely the size of newborn kittens at birth and weighed no more than 56 grams (about 2 ounces) - are now much less shy and can regularly be seen hitching a lift with Mum around the woodland. This is a major success for the Park, which only opened the walk-through on 4th April 2011. Of the new babies, Director of Wildlife, Bob Lawrence said, "This is fantastic news, we are absolutely delighted. The new Lemur exhibit is a super attraction. The Lemurs have settled in well and seem to enjoy all the attention that is being lavished upon them. Visitors can't quite believe that they can walk amongst the Lemur and get so close. The youngsters are very photogenic and the addition of Lemur twins is the icing on the cake"! Ring Tailed Lemurs (Lemur catta) purr and mew like domestic cats, can give birth at around 3 years and can live in captivity for between 20 and 30 years. West Midland Safari and Leisure Park is open daily, including Bank Holidays, up to Friday 4th November 2011. "Walking with Lemurs" is included as part of the standard admission charge of £13.99 for adults, £11.99 for children. A family saver ticket costs £46.76, which admits two adults and two children and offers a 10% saving on standard admission prices. Admission prices also include a free return ticket. Amusement rides are charged extra in all cases. Further information is available from the Park's official website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114.

Please mention TheWorksLocal when responding to adverts Community Composting comes a step closer The formation of a Lansdown Community Composting Club took another step forward last week with the appointment of a 5 person steering group. The group came together following the successful public meeting on May 10th at Well Close House, Lansdown & the proposed site for the Composting Club. With chair, secretary & treasurer in place & a constitution drawn up the next step is to open a bank account & apply for start up grants & funding. Chair & project manager, Peter Clegg was pleased with such rapid progress & enthusiasm for the Club. It is great to have the local support for the project & now we can start the exciting work of bringing the Composting Club to fruition. We have a sustainable business model & the blessing of the Environment Agency & Gloucestershire County Council & tremendous support from the landowner St Vincent’s & St George’s Association along with two local councillors Mayor Barbara Driver & Diggory Seacome. For more information to get involved or if you are a Lansdown resident and wish to register your interest please contact Peter Clegg at peterclegg@phonecoop.coop or telephone 233527. Note: Community composting is when local people join together to compost garden green waste to provide a regular supply of good quality peat-free compost. It brings the local people together and helps those who cannot make their own. There are already many successful rural Community Composting clubs in Gloucestershire but the Lansdown Community Composting Club would be the first urban one. For further information, please contact: Peter Clegg E: peterclegg@phonecoop.coop P: 01242 233527 M: 07973 509452

Launch Of ‘Love Your Zoo’ And ‘On Your Doorstep’ At The International Centre For Birds Of Prey The ICBP has a packed itinerary of themed events for your diary this summer, inspired by the ‘Love Your Zoo’ campaign, launched this year by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). Its aim is to encourage people to visit their local BIAZA zoos, aquariums and wildlife centres and not only have a fun day out, but also learn just how much they do for conservation, education and research. To promote World Habitat Day on 3rd October 2011, we are sponsoring the important conservation work of the Regua Reserve in the Brazilian Rainforest, which is fighting to preserve some of our planet's most endangered habitats and species. You too can show your commitment to conservation on a local level by visiting us here at the Centre between these important dates, and taking part in our Raffle. The winning entry will be given a complementary voucher for one of our unique Half Day Experiences or Photography Half Days…whichever you prefer! Children under 16 years must be accompanied by a full-paying adult. Budding artists can join our art workshop on 11th September, and enjoy first-class tutelage from our in-house wildlife artist and falconry expert! We have fun days for children, with competitions and prizes! On 6 July 2011 there is a drawing competition for Children’s Art Day and in early October there is a competition for children to th write about their favourite bird here at the Centre, in celebration of World Animal Day on 4 th October and National Poetry Day on 7 October. We also have Summer Barbeque and Owl Evenings throughout the summer and the longawaited Kiezebrink UK Falconry and Hawking Event on the 3rd and 4th September which you can buy tickets for in advance by contacting us at the Centre. All proceeds go towards the ICBP's valuable work for birds of prey. Jemima Parry-Jones, ICBP said: “We have lots in store for a fun-filled summer and we hope people will join us in celebrating these special events.” For more information on our events contact The International Centre for Birds of Prey, Newent, Glos. New Chairman of the organisers, Martyn Slater, says: “The Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Extravaganza is the biggest of its kind run entirely by volunteers and I am proud to be involved with a pastime that is very enjoyable, as well as raising money for local and national charities. DAVE’S TOP TIPS Chalk Line For running dado rails through a hallway, or making a wallpaper border level round the room, an excellent tool to have in your kit is a chalk line. Simply mark a point on the wall at one end of the room by measuring from the ceiling or floor, and then do the same at the other. Hold the chalk line on both marks, lift it and let it go. "Ping". Also use this on horizontal surfaces to mark the floor when setting out for laying floor tiles or on the joists when laying floorboards. A chalk line can be used in almost any situation where a dead straight line is required. If you are on your own, then knock in a small tack or nail on your first mark and loop the end of the chalk line over it. Hold it tight on the second mark and ping. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.
