Editor: Stacey Thomas I am the publisher for all The Works magazines and I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine. I live in Gloucester with my baby daughter, husband and cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh! For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email info@theworkslocal.com. As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch climate.

Please mention TheWorksLocal when responding to adverts DAVE’S TOP TIPS Using Wall plugs Many types of wall plugs exist and new designs are being brought out all of the time. Make sure that you use the correct drill and the correct screw or else the fixing will not work. Wall plugs should not be used in hollow plasterboard walls as other fixings are available for this. Mark the length of the plug on the drill using some tape. If you are drilling through a wall that has old plaster that is likely to flake then it is best of you drill a little deeper and ensure that the plug is pushed through the plaster and into the masonry behind, so that the plaster does not crack when the screw is tightened. Before drilling a hole into a wall you must ensure that no services such as pipes or cables are running where you intend to drill. When drilling through plaster into masonry it is best if you do not use hammer action until you hit the masonry. If you try to drill the plaster using hammer action you could damage the plaster and could drill the hole in the wrong place. When you reach the desired depth you can remove the drill from the hole. Insert the correct size wall plug and tap it home with a hammer. Remember if the plaster is likely to flake tap the plug further into the brickwork so as to prevent flaking when the plug expands. Finally insert the correct size screw and tighten up. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. Local Solicitors ‘tie up’ with Will Aid Support ‘Will Aid’ with local solicitors Tayntons LLP based in Clarence Street, Gloucester who are participating in the campaign again this year. Their Wills & Probate experts will prepare straightforward Wills ‘free of charge’ and in return those participating will be invited to make a donation to the Will Aid Charity. The level of the donation is up to you but the Charity suggests £75.00 for a single Will and £110.00 for two mirror Wills. Will Aid is an umbrella charity which raises money for Action Aid, The British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, the NSPCC, Save the Children UK, Sightsavers International, SCIAT and Trocaire. Since Tayntons LLP first participated in the Will Aid Campaign they have raised over £9,000 in donations. This year, Tayntons LLP are going the ‘extra mile’ by offering people who make Wills under the Will Aid Campaign the opportunity to complete one unregistered Lasting Power of Attorney for a significantly discounted price of £150.00 + VAT. Martin Roberts explains that “Enduring Powers of Attorney used to be very popular and useful but since a change in the law which took affect on the 1st October 2007, it hasn’t been possible for any new ones to be completed. To avoid a Court of Protection application if you haven’t got an EPA and you become incapable of making decisions for yourself, the only option is a Lasting Power of Attorney. These are complex and costly documents to put in place and as a result very few are completed. For some people, the importance of these documents can’t be emphasised enough and cost is a factor. Tayntons LLP want to allow people the opportunity to put these arrangements in place for the future by offering a significant saving on our normal charges during the Will Aid Campaign” To take advantage of participating in the Will Aid Campaign and Tayntons LLP Lasting Power of Attorney offer, please contact Martin Roberts or Tristan Lewis on 0800 389 7203 and bring this article along with you at your first meeting. Dimensions 3: Time for Something Different? (Specialist Kitchen, Bathroom & Bedroom Manufacturers) We are always looking to promote our local businesses and this month we are focusing on Dimensions 3. At this time of year many people think about making changes to their homes, All be it the bedroom, bathroom or perhaps the kitchen? Well if you are looking for new ideas, something special or a little bit different for your home why not visit Dimensions 3 just off the A40 at Churcham. Dimensions 3 are a Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom Specialist and although relatively unknown locally has been in business for about seven years, currently based on the Churcham Business Park. The Company is now being recognised for its innovative approach to creating modern kitchens and bathrooms. Their company has a growing reputation for manufacturing and fitting quality products for its retail and trade customers. All furniture is manufactured at Dimensions 3.

The showroom alone is worth a visit, as it allows you not only to see just some of the eye catching furniture on display, but also observe first hand the clean and orderly manufacturing facility. Part of the customer service offering allows customers to see their furniture actually being produced! One of their state of the art designer kitchens was recently the subject of an article in the nationally recognised magazine “Essential Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedrooms”. The article presented a kitchen designed, manufactured and installed by Dimensions 3. This contemporary kitchen included an Island Unit capable of being used not only as a worktop, but also for family meals and as a focal point where the family could congregate also. An example of this type of kitchen layout is currently on show at Dimensions 3 so drop in to take a look or book an appointment if you wish a full tour of the premises. A visit may prompt some contemporary ideas of your own which Dimensions 3 could help you to develop and transform from a perception to reality. Ring Dimensions 3, today for an appointment on 01452 750409 – I’m sure you will not regret it.

Local Business Focus Fords Sheds have been selling all sizes of sheds for nearly 30 years and in a lot of cases we erect them for customers as well. In these credit crunch/recession times we have also been offering a service to refelt, repair and retreat sheds. Some sheds are not repairable and we do sometimes offer to take old sheds down and take them away when we are supplying a new shed. In a lot of cases you can extend the life of the building by maybe putting in a few new boards, refelting the roof and retreating the whole building and we have done a lot of that type of work for people recently. Our sheds come treated in spirit based treatment and we have now started selling 5 litre cans of the treatment.

We have also started selling ecobases - these are 500 x 500 sections of eco friendly 100% recycled plastic and they come delivered to your door with a sheet of permeable membrane and the pins to secure the grids together. They are a lightweight alternative to paving slabs and extend the life of sheds as they keep them dry and ventilated. It also means that if you want to move and take your shed with you then you can now also take your base with you. They work well under sheds, greenhouses, log cabins, summerhouses etc. See www.ecobase.biz We can be contacted on 01452 527031 or emailed or you can look at our website www.fordssheds.co.uk

HANDS AROUND THE WORLD – GIVING A HAND, NOT A HANDOUT Do you ever get to wondering how you could inject a little excitement into your world? We can promise you a life-changing experience... and not just for you! If you are aged between 21 and 75 and you would like to spend some time in Africa or India, sharing your skills and experience with those for whom each day can be a challenge, please keep reading. Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire-based charity HANDS AROUND THE WORLD is looking for ordinary people, with between 3 weeks and 6 months to give. Useful skills include counselling, engineering, community nursing, teaching, management advice, occupational therapy, learning support, DIY, foster caring and physiotherapy. This list is not exhaustive - we’re happy to chat to you about whatever you might be able to offer. Sometimes what is needed most is just a listening ear or a bit of encouragement and advice. You might have just what we’re looking for!

We need people who aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work, who are willing to be flexible and openminded and who realise that the most important part of our work is making a long-lasting difference to the vulnerable and often orphaned children we seek to support. Along the way, you’ll pick up new friends, new skills and a new perspective on life. Old friends are not forgotten either – our volunteers travel with at least one other person, and that person could be your husband, friend or daughter. Alternatively, you could walk on the wild side and let us find you a travelling companion. Volunteers are asked to cover their basic costs, and to make a donation to HATW. Basic accommodation is provided by our overseas partners. For more information or just to chat about the options available, please get in touch with Joanna on 01600 740317 / joanna@hatw.org.uk

Characters in Our Community: A Kennel Club Star In this edition we focus on Dorothy Bridge, a lady in the Community who is considered a star by the Kennel Club of Great Britain for her charitable work in Organising Dog shows for Charity. Since Dorothy moved to Gloucester in 1954, she has since dedicated her life to breeding and showing her prized family of shih-tzu dogs and the walls of her lounge are decorated with photographs of her dogs and numerous rosettes which are representative of the many show prizes awarded to her “family”. Her dogs are always entered for the prestigious National Crufts Dog show, in which she has been close to winning several times, and achieved a valuable runners up award in the Puppy Class during the year 2000 Championships.

Dorothy’s other passion is her charity work and it is in this area that she has been recognised by the Kennel Club. In January Dorothy will have organised her 100th Companion dog show! Companion dog shows are charity dog shows, and are open to anyone who wishes to enter their dog, irrespective of breed. Shows can have as many as 30 – 40 different classes or categories, with prizes for each one. For the more serious owners there are 8 classes for Pedigree dogs and 3 classes for Obedience. However, these are supplemented by novelty categories for Veterans and Junior Handlers made up of Beauty and Novelty categories like: Best Condition, Best 6 Legs (Dog and owner!) Best Party Trick, Most Appealing Face and even one for Waggiest Tail! Everyone who enters the show has a good chance of taking home a prize. Although it is a competition, it is also very much a social and enjoyable occasion for everyone involved. Dorothy organises a show on a monthly basis between September and April with shows currently held at the Innsworth Community Hall. Each Companion show is held in aid of a specific Charity. Charities which have benefited from Dorothy’s work include: the Heart Foundation, Air Ambulance, the Donkey Sanctuary and more recently “Help the Heroes”. However, there are many other charities that also benefit and Dorothy often finds it difficult to keep everyone happy. The Kennel Club has nominated Dorothy as the “Best Companion Dog Show Organiser of the Year”. She will be presented with an award and trophy during the companion show to be held in January, which will coincide with the completion of 100 shows. A tremendous achievement, which deserves recognition for this valuable contribution to Charity and the Community. On Monday evenings, at the Longlevens Community Centre, Dorothy specialises in teaching Ring craft, and as a highly skilled teacher, teaches the art of showing dogs in the show ring. Check with Dorothy on 01452 311775 if you are interested. Dorothy’s fervour for her dogs and her work are very evident, therefore, if you want the chance to show off your pet dog, why not try one of Dorothy’s shows, the kids might love it too. Give it a go! The next shows are at Innsworth on the 27th December and January 15th 2011. Finally from the Community let’s give Dorothy our heartiest congratulations for her achievements to date and hope that she has continued success into the future, allowing many Charities to prosper from Dorothy’s commitment.
