2007 Abbaye Sylva Plana Faugeres $14.99 This Southern French red is so exotic! It explodes with a nose of powdery white flowers, licorice, plums, mocha, raisins, tequila, earth and pepper. It’s full and ripe on the palate with fleshy plum, and dried fruits, black pepper, orange rind, chocolate, tequila and herbs. Really delicious, and intriguing, this is a must for lovers of Southern French wines.

Qupe is one of my favorite Syrah producers in California. Bob Lindquist has been making Qupe wines since 1983, staying true to his classic style of low alcohol and balance. Bob has said to me, “The Europeans had it right. A bottle of wine is meant to be shared by two people over a meal without getting smashed.” But what I love the most about the Qupe wines is that they have character. Bob farms his grapes as naturally as possible to show the personality of the vineyard; and this vineyard, Bien Nacido, is an American icon. This is as Rhone-like as you’re going to get without leaving California. Classic cool climate Syrah – love that pepper!

The Great, Aromatic, Nebbiolo

by Dean Alexander, San Jose

Many

Oudart

at
her
still
famous
estate.
It
was
her
royal
title
‘di

The

The

 comes
from

is.
Nebbiolo
can
at

but
within
that
 lies
its
aromatic
beauty:
dusty

2007 Luigi Pira Barolo $35.99 This is perhaps the most open and imminently drinkable Barolo I’ve ever tasted, thanks to the ripe, soft 2007 vintage. Lush and open, its plum fruit is so fresh, and so authentic, with the bitter/acidic bite of plum skin. Fresh herbs, warm earth, leather, and vanilla notes round out this rich, round, juicy Barolo. An Advocate 89-91 pointer. 2007 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubi0la $44.99 Behind the slight tar-like reduction, lifts the lithe aromatics of feathery red raspberry, crushed strawberries, bing cherries, plum and flowers. The mouth is pure, with a wash of red fruits, with Nebbiolo’s pleasant bitterness, and fine tannins giving the wine a wonderful textural component and complexity. This has shed some of its baby fat, and has gained poise and fineness in the last six months. Galloni gave this 93pts.

2007 Seghesio “La Villa” $47.99 Like the Pira, is a lush, darker colored, and generally atypical Barolo thanks to warm 2007 vintage. This is a very modern styled wine, featuring dark plum and blackberry fruit framed with the obvious use of French barrique. It has a somewhat briery quality of dried herbs, and vanilla, mingling with dried cherry, and the firming tannins one associates with Barolo. Suckling gave this 92 pts. 2007 Dominico Clerico, Arte $43.99 This is the deal among the legendary wines of Clerico. With 90% Nebbiolo from some of the finest Cru in Barolo, and 10% Barbera planted in 1965, this is a simply superb “Super-Piemontese.” Clerico raises its wine in new lightly toasted barrique for cleanliness reasons, and leaving the wine on it’s fine lees to inhibit the absorption of oaks flavors. I love this medium bodied wine, with its great complexity, the fruit and structure. It simply shines. An Advocate 92.

“Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, licorice and incense are woven together in a fabric of superb richness. The finish is long, precise and exceptionally pure, with crystalline, mineral notes that add freshness. Offering spiced aromas with bright cherry flavor and wonderful rich texture, this is easily this year’s best under $20 Pinot Noir.

While
it
seems
 counter‐intuitive,
 Syrah

 After

The Spirits of San Francisco! by Michael Reynolds T h e Wi n e C l u b S a n F r a n c i s c o , M a n a g e r

This
month
The
Wine
Club
will
take
you
on
a
tour
of
the
local
Bay
Area
producers
of
artisan
spirits.

San
 Francisco
has
a
long
history
of
being
the
epicenter
of
imbibement
in
North
America
and
we
want
to
 honor
those
that
have
kept
this
distinction
alive.

From
the
decadent
days
of
the
Barbary
Coast,
through
 the
survival
of
Hotalings
whiskey
warehouse
after
the
1906
quake,
with
the
rum
runners
of
Prohibition,
 next
to
the
hedonistic
drinking
of
the
Beatniks,
to
the
modern
mixologist
revolution,
San
Francisco
has
a
 tale
to
tell
where
spirits
are
concerned.

This
history
has
given
way
to
the
demand
for
delicious
yet
 unique
hand‐crafted
products.

The
following
producers
have
successfully
taken
the
torch! Cyrus Noble Bourbon - $24.99 This was a favorite among gold miners and the San Francisco elite in the 1870ʼs and beyond. After disappearing for many decades, the San Francisco-based Haas Brothers have rekindled this 140 year old proprietary recipe which is made in Kentucky. It has all the qualities of a hand-made bourbon - rich and smooth with caramel, toasted hazelnut, and buttered toffee. Absolut SF Vodka - $19.99 Infused with grape, dragon fruit, and papaya - a nod to wine country and the Asian and Latino populace in San Francisco - this is a mixologistʼs dream. Clean flavors are the story here. The fruit pops but is not sweet or cloying. Add citrus - especially grapefruit (SF Foghorn) - and you will have a yummy cocktail experience. “Diversity Now, Cocktails Tonight!”

Charbay Flavored Vodka - $29.99 Right up the road in the Napa Valley are the great producers of artisan spirits at Domaine Charbay. The current favorites at The Wine Club are the Blood Orange and the Meyer Lemon. Ripe for making great cocktails but we suggest sipping them on the rocks. The organicallygrown fruit is shredded and the flavors are extracted and then

integrated into the award-winning, clear vodka. Charbay Tequila Blanco - $51.99 This is an amazing tequila! Pure yet complex and flavorful. Double distilled in Copper Alambiques Tequilano Pot Stills this highland tequila really delivers on the flavor. The traditional production methods allow for the agave to shine. The GPS coordinates on the bottle allow you to see exactly where the agave came from. The only secret is the proprietary distillation method. Junipero Gin - $29.99 From Anchor Company, this dry yet expressive gin is made right here in San Francisco on Potrero Hill. Made with more than a dozen botanicals this is a spicy and aromatic gin that is modern but keeps a finger on the pulse of tradition. Juniper berry is the dominant aromatic, but you will find that it is very complex yet it keeps a wonderful crisp and light personality. Makes a great San Frantini! Hangar One Vodka - $33.99 Made from Viognier grapes (instead of grains, potatoes, etc) and distilled in very small batches in copper pot stills, Hangar One is produced just across the bay in Alameda, CA. This is a true artisan product: tiny batches, hand selected fruit, hands-on distilling.

Here are our other San Francisco spirits:

Distillery No. 209 Gin $29.99 Pier 50 in SF. By the famous Rudd family. Old Potrero Straight Rye $61.99 From Anchor. VERY LIMITED! Old Potrero 18th Century Rye $65.99 VERY VERY LIMITED! Old Potrero Hotalings 15 Yr Rye $94.99 Call the San Francisco store for availability. Blade Gin $29.99 From Belmont, CA. Another complex gin. A must have. Anchor Genevieve Gin $28.99 A trip back in history. Kuchan Ohenry Oak Aged Eau De Vie $37.99 Fleshy and smooth. Kuchan Indian Blood Eau De Vie $33.99 Rare and a joy. Kuchan Juglans Black Walnut Liqueur $27.99 Sweetened with organic tapioca. La Sorciere Verte Absinthe Superieure $39.99 All natural - no sugar or coloring. Oh my!

If you’re not using Riedel Glassware, you aren’t experiencing wine as it is meant to smell and taste. These glasses make a huge difference in the apparent quality of the wine you drink every day. I can’t put a higher emphasis on the importance of good stemware. Dean Alexander, San Jose

The Wine Club carries an extensive selection of Riedel Stemware.

“The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make." Robert M. Parker, Jr.
