An Evolution of the Iconic Rubik’s Cube Introducing the Rubik’s Spark – an innovative new electronic game with a serious twist on the classic The game masters at Rubik’s have created an amazing, new electronic cube that offers hours of fun, and six games in one. Designed for ages 6-11, the Rubik’s Spark is a new, high-tech evolutionary game platform, using lights, sounds, and ‘Bubble Control’ Technology to challenge the senses and unleash your inner competitive self. “The Rubik’s Spark offers a modern spin on the original, iconic cube that we all remember, but adds a very different, very exciting modern technology twist to challenge and engage the user,” says Grant Chapman, president, Kroeger Inc, distributor of Rubik’s Cube in Canada. The Spark’s 3x3 design is basically the only similarity between it and the original, worldfamous and iconic Rubik’s 3x3 Cube. Using innovative and evolutionary ‘Bubble Control’ Technology to enhance game design and play, players tilt, turn shake and flip the Spark to complete digital puzzles, games, mazes and challenges. Leveraging the Bubble Control Technology, the flashing cursor will always try to ‘float to the top’ making game play a balance between speed and skill. Always frenetic, the Rubik’s Spark offers six skill challenging games, with multiple levels to challenge your friends, family or individual high score. The games included are:

Tilt n’ Zap

In this interactive game, players get three lives and must tilt and spin Rubik’s Spark with dexterity and quick thinking to avoid getting zapped! As children master the art of the cube, they move through different levels of difficulty and the smart cube scores them on every game.

Follow the Path

Rubik’s Spark helps kids boost concentration and memory while they

Fascinating Rubik’s Cube Facts

•    Erno Rubik, a professor at the Hungarian Academy of Crafts and Design in Budapest, Hungary, invented the Rubik’s Cube in 1974.  His goal was to create a cube with parts that could move around a centre axis.  He painted each side a different colour for demonstration purposes and accidentally stumbled upon the puzzle we now know as the Rubik’s Cube.   •    The Rubik’s Cube was originally called

are having fun. During Follow the Path play, the cube lights up to show children a cube solving sequence and challenges them to remember and replay it.  Players get three lives and the cube gives a score at the end of each game.

Seek and Destroy

In this fast moving game, Rubik’s Spark players have one mission: to move the flashing cube and destroy other cubes as they light up.  Players get 3 lives and the cube gives a score at the end of each game.

Snackin’ Snake

In this game, kids must move the flashing cube to gobble up blinking cubes as they appear. As players successfully munch up each blinking cube, a snake appears and its tail grows longer with each successful snack.  Players get three lives and the cube gives a score at the end of each game.

Light the Cube

In this game, children are challenged to light up all three layers of the Rubik’s Spark cube by following cues and remembering sequences. Players get three lives - and in addition to the satisfaction of lighting the entire cube; the cube also gives a score at the end of each game.

Rubik’s DJ

This free flowing game lets kid make their own music by tilting and turning Rubik’s Spark. As they create original songs, the cube lights up to their tunes.  No score. No rules.  “Rubik’s fans of all ages will enjoy playing with Rubik’s Spark since it offers fastmoving games and video-game inspired sound and light effects,” says Chapman.  “It’s also a fabulous “starter” cube that encourages children as they develop the foundational strategy, concentration and flexible thinking that’s necessary to progress to the Original Rubik’s cube,” explains Grant. “The Spark offers a fast-moving, innovative way to enjoy a taste of classic Rubik’s Cube in a whole new light. With new technology, new design, and all new types of game play, the Spark takes the classic Rubik’s cube on an entirely new adventure, focused on high paced, computer generated thrills and game play, regardless of skill level. The Spark is an evolution of the Rubik’s cube, and allows the player to evolve their puzzle solving skills at their pace,” explains Grant. New Rubik’s Spark is available at almost all mass and specialty retailers in Canada, at a suggested retail of $34.99. For more information on all things Rubik’s, please visit

the ‘Magic Cube’ in 1974. It was renamed the Rubik’s Cube by the Ideal Toy Corporation in 1980;   •    The Cube’s 21 pieces appear fairly simple to solve, but it hides an astonishing forty three quintillion (43,252,003,274,489,856,000) different configurations!  ‘God’s Algorithm,’ the fewest number of moves needed to solve a completely scrambled Rubik’s Cube, is 22 by some calculations;   •    The current Speed Cubing World Record, held by Lucas Etter, currently stands at an amazing 4.90 seconds

•    If a person allowed one second for each turn, it would take 1,400 trillion years to go through every possible configuration.   •    Cube-a-holics Anonymous was founded in 1980 by self-confessed Cubomaniac Angus Judd, to help cubers kick the habit.

ore than 250 years after the death of its composer, Messiah still moves holiday audiences. The Christmas classic, the centrepiece of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra’s Messiah & More program Dec. 3-4 (the WSO will also perform several Holiday Pops shows), was originally an Easter offering first performed in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742. George Frederic Handel’s Messiah is now a fixture of the holiday season and one of the most famous pieces of music ever written or performed; Ludwig van Beethoven, citing Messiah, called Handel the “greatest composer that ever lived.”

Composer Handel, blind, is shown with his score to Messiah.

The practical gift of tools DAV E H A L L I DAY

he appearance of rechargeable tools in the 1960s sparked an ongoing battle to provide convenience and portability unencumbered by power cords. Competition in this field leads to innovation and improvement that provides benefits both on the job site and at home. Black and Decker, which has been in the field since the beginning, now adds the Smart Tech drill and battery to its arsenal. In 1961, Black and Decker unveiled its first cordless drill and expanded its lineup as it worked to develop tools for NASA that could be used in space. Smart Tech batteries use Bluetooth technology to connect to the Black and Decker mobile app. The app’s features allow the user to see a list of his batteries, select and interact with a battery when in range to locate the battery, monitor its state of charge or activate the integrated USB port. DeWalt has also made considerable advances in battery technology, stepping up with its Flexvolt System that can change voltage based on the tool in use. The Flexvolt system can be used for tools of 20, 60 and 120 volts. For example, the 60-volt setup powers a table saw or a compound mitre saw. “The impact of the Flexvolt system will be felt throughout the construction industry on each and every job site,” said Frank Mannarino, president of DeWalt professional products group. “This new platform packs the power required for heavy-duty applications.” In addition, DeWalt is also offering a Portable Power Station to meet the needs of a variety of users. The

1800-watt power station runs on four 20 volt DeWalt Max batteries which allows it to power a corded tool. It can also charge up to four DeWalt 20-volt batteries when plugged into an electrical outlet. The power station can also be used to provide power in areas where noise is restricted, including job sites, camping and tailgating. DeWalt has also introduced the fast charger which can charge up to four of the 20volt batteries at once. This unit can be wall-mounted to save on space. feeder maybe, or a guide book, or perhaps the birdwatcher on your list could use a pair of binoculars. A supply of bird seed, a heated bird bath, a CD to identify bird calls are other possibilities, and there are plenty more for the novice or the veteran birdwatcher. For the beginner, the easiest way to get started is with a feeder, Steve Kulak from The Wildbird General Store says. That can be done for as little as $10 although “$30 to $80 is probably your sweet spot for good quality, long-lasting, nice to look at.” A simple tray feeder ($25) made from cedar salvaged from B.C. mills is one option. A covered fly-through model ($42) offers more protection from the elements while a hopper feeder with roof and Plexiglas sides ($67) allows for more seed. If the whimsical appeals, Wildbird General Store has hand-built feeders shaped like log cabins, churches and other structures ($150 - $200). Or a window feeder might suit your birdwatcher. Wild Birds Unlimited® Nature Shop has an attractive porthole model made of mahogany for $75. “Chickadees, nuthatches will come up to the window,” store co-owner Janis Chapman says. The store’s wide array of feeders includes models shaped like penguins ($30) and owls ($25). “They work and they’re cute,” Chapman says.
