The swap is intergenerational and cards can be handmade by any combination of child and adult, so if kids aren't completely up to the task or if an adult would like to make their own design, there's flexibility. WESTFIELD The Council On Aging is combining the monthly “Live and Learn” healthy lifestyle series with a special research project on balance that Dr. Melissa Roti from the Westfield State University Movement Science Department is conducting. The risk of falling is greater for older adults if physical and cognitive functioning decline. Therefore, prevention should address both areas. One factor that may negatively influence physical and cognitive functioning is hydration status or how much fluid a person drinks. Dr. Roti’s research project will examine the relationship between hydration and balance in older adults. Join Dr. Roti at the Senior Center on Thursday, February 13 at 10 a.m. for her presentation, “A Balancing Act.” She’ll discuss factors that affect balance as well as outline her research project for any senior who would like to be a subject. Participants will complete some questionnaires regarding food/fluid intake and physical/cognitive function; provide a single urine sample; and perform a balance assessment. The information gathering and balance testing will take place in

MUHTAR If you have ever wanted to love a beautiful German Sheppard, & be loved back in return then Muhtar could be that dog for you. He loves to be around people, has a great disposition & really is a fun dog; he even smiles! He would be great in a family setting with children over 8 years old, only because he could accidentally knock over a smaller child; something he would never do on purpose. Muhtar could use a few obedience classes to make him the perfect 2 yr old gentleman that he yearns to be. He loves to walk & does well on a leash. Here is a dog that would be in paradise in a fenced in back yard with his own person or family to kick a ball around with him. Just look at that beautiful face, if you come see him in person, if you are a German Sheppard person, you won’t be able to leave without him.

NINJA Ninja is a male Chihuahua mix, who is about 2-3 yrs old & quite the personable little guy. He is a bit nervous around new people but just give him a few minutes, he warms up quickly. Ninja has spent a lot of time out on the streets, literally, & has become somewhat of a celebrity at the shelter, due to his ability to survive out there. This little guy was able to stay barely alive in that horrific cold we had, his arrival at the shelter was a life saver for him. Now Ninja would be so grateful to have a warm & safe place to rest that little body of his that has endured so much. He is as cute as a button & would thrive in an apartment or home with older adults who could share some of their time & a lot of their love with him. He is truly a furry babe in need of a forever home, where he can trust people again & know that the streets will never again be home to him. Please come visit the shelter & see Ninja & all our wonderful other canine guests, you will be delightfully surprised at what you find. With the winter months here, we are in need of canned dog food for all our canine guests. Thank you from all of us at the Westfield Regional Animal Shelter; a Shelter that Westfield can be very proud of.

is currently comprised of 36 men and women from Northampton, Easthampton and Southampton and membership is open to residents 18 and older from any city or town in Western Massachusetts. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their communities by conducting service projects and raising

funds to help those in need wherever need exists. Part of a worldwide organization of more than 1.5 million members, the Lions motto is “We Serve.” Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing and work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion but all have one thing in common: They enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of Lionism and get to know the benefits of becoming a member.

Shedding light on replacement windows (Family Features) Windows can bring new life to existing homes by letting in fresh air, flooding rooms with natural light and opening up beautiful views. They also come in all shapes, sizes and materials. Important considerations for selecting the right window are type, material, style, climate and budget. Type A pocket window is perfect in situations where the home’s existing window frame and surrounding wall are in good condition, but the sash is in need of improvement. Installing a complete replacement window is a good choice for projects involving more substantial renovation. Material The most common materials used for windows are vinyl, wood, clad-wood and aluminum. Your choice depends on what factors are most important to you. Vinyl — A strong PVC material that is used for its durability, energy efficiency and ability to stand up to the elements. This material resists fading and won’t flake, peel or rot. Wood — Wood comes from trees with a range of characteristics, such as grain, color and sap content. Cladding is a strong layer of metal over the wood, providing extra protection and low maintenance benefits with no exterior painting required. Look for windows, like the JELD-WEN® W-2500 clad-wood windows, that combine the beauty of real wood with high-tech energy efficiency. JELDWEN’s wood windows, patio doors, exterior doors, door frames and trim boards made with solid pine AuraLast wood are protected from wood rot, termites and water saturation. Aluminum — A lightweight and strong material that is a cost effective alternative to wood. This material is corrosion-resistant and performs well in most climates. Style Awning, bay, bow, casement, double-hung, fixed, garden, single-hung, sliding and tilt and

turn — windows are available in many shapes, sizes and combination units. Budget When it comes to budget, it’s important to factor in long term value beyond the initial purchase price. Energy efficiency and a longer warranty can all help save maintenance and replacement costs over time. Resale value is also a key consideration — beautiful, more efficient windows are a big selling feature. Climate Considerations Wet, humid, hot, severe storms, salty air — different climates have different window needs when it comes to material and glass choices. Talk to a reputable contractor or window dealer in your particular area to help select products that may work best for you. He or she may recommend hardware for a coastal environment, rot-resistant wood or another of the following materials or options: Coastal climates, wet and damp and/or high humidity — Specially treated wood windows or vinyl windows offer good moisture protection. Because these conditions can require more maintenance, including regular repainting and touch-ups, windows that require less maintenance and won’t need painting, such as vinyl, and clad-wood windows, are a good choice. Energy efficiency — With more homeowners looking for ways to save energy and money with building and remodeling projects, the demand for energy efficient windows grows. The W-2500 window from JELDWEN, www.jeld-wen.com, can meet ENERGY STAR® criteria in all four climate zones in the U.S. and comes with an industryleading warranty against wood rot. There are several criteria that must be met for a product to receive the ENERGY STAR designation. It is given in North, North Central and South Central climate zones with the standard glass

you don't make unnecessary purchases, which can be costly and only add to the clutter in your home. Be wary of accumulating "aspirational clutter" - things you plan to use someday, but never quite get around to using. Though tempting, also avoid freebies and gifts with purchase that you don't really need. Remember, clutter creates more clutter. 2. Create zones. In other words, make a space for everything. Your entryway can become a repository, so sort mail immediately (recycle what you don't need), hang coats rather than draping them on available furniture and use a shoe bin or tray to organize pairs you wear frequently. In the bedroom closet, use vertical space to create additional storage with organizing units. Wood organizers such as ClosetMaid Impressionstm offer an attractive way to declutter with kits and add-on pieces that let you create a customized storage system

for your personal needs. A second shoe rack in the closet helps organize shoes you wear less often. In the living room, create specific storage spaces for remotes, blankets, gaming equipment and other items using storage bins and containers that complement your décor. 3. Reset yourself. Every night before you turn in, take a few moments to put things where they belong. This gives you a fresh, stress-free start in the morning and peace of mind knowing where everything you need is located.

4. Turn clutter into cash. Motivate yourself to de-clutter by making money on your unused and unwanted possessions. You can sell gently used clothing to local consignment shops, or donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army or another nonprofit organization. Remember to get a donation receipt, because you may be able to take a tax deduction. For additional organizing tips, visit www.ClosetMaid. com, w w w. StorganizationBlog.com or call 1-800-874-0008.

Exceptionally hot/harsh sun exposure — Rather than window material type, glass and window location is key. The right glass can help protect against UV exposure and keep interior furnishings from fading. Choose insulated Low-E glass, which reduces the amount of heat entering the home and lowers cooling needs. It also blocks up to 85 percent of harmful UV rays that cause interior fading. Look for the ENERGY STAR label suitable for your region. Pay attention to window labels including the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which indicates the ability to block heat generated by sunlight. The greater the protection, the lower the SHGC. U-factor is also important, which is the amount of heat flowing through a product. The lower the number, the more energy efficient it is. Proper over-

impacts from wind borne debris and keep windows intact during storms. Depending on location, new windows can save you money year after year. They can also increase your home’s value. Most importantly, new windows enhance the entire look of your home and add to priceless curb appeal — a must when it comes time to sell your home. Don’t Let Money Go Out the Window Windows have a significant impact on your heating and cooling bills. So, it’s extremely important to make the most energy-efficient choice for your home. Replacing old windows with ENERGY STAR qualified windows can lower household energy bills by 7 to 15 percent, according to the

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lower energy consumption also reduces greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and shrinks a house’s carbon footprint. With thousands of ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors, JELD-WEN can help improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home while also providing style and long-lasting durability. ENERGY STAR divides the U.S. into four climate zones, each with its own unique set of energy performance requirements. Energy efficiency for windows and doors is compared by using two important measurements: U-Factor: U-factor measures insulating value and indicates how much heat or cold transfers through the window or door. The lower the U-factor, the more energy efficient the product is. SHGC: Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures a window’s ability to block

the sun’s heat. The more solar heat it blocks, the lower the SHGC number. Where air conditioning is prevalent, ENERGY STAR requires a lower SHGC. Where heating is more prevalent, opt for a higher SHGC so the sun’s rays can stream in on cold winter days In the northern zones, U-Factor and SHGC requirements focus on helping reduce the need for heating. In the southern zones, requirements generally aim to reduce the need for air conditioning. Special glass coatings help control how much of the sun’s heat enters and how much of the controlled air temperature inside escapes. To earn the ENERGY STAR label, windows must meet rigorous energy performance levels. Qualified products must also have thirdparty certification based on testing in recognized laboratories.
