WELCOME to the WEST BANK THE WEST BANK / CEDAR-RIVERSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD
is a diverse community on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. In the late 19th century, Scandinavian immigrants drawn to work in the milling and lumber industries made their homes here. The immigrant tradition continues today as Cedar-Riverside serves as a home for thousands of new Americans making their start in the Twin Cities. Musicians, artists, students and families have also long called the West Bank home and continue to come together to share their knowledge, talents and inspiration. The University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, and the University of St. Catherine bring a progressive and intellectual flavor to the neighborhood while a vibrant business district is home to theaters, music clubs, coffee shops, pubs, co-ops, locally-owned retail stores, ethnic and vegetarian restaurants and historic buildings all worthy of exploration. Thank you for visiting the West Bank and enjoy your time in our community!

I
t’s hard to go wrong when it comes to dining on the West Bank, and there are tons of incredible and affordable options. Looking for a little spice? Check out Malabari Kitchen for its Southeast Asian fare, or Jewel of India for a delectably flavorful and affordable weekday buffet. You’ll find a wealth of amazing craft beer on tap throughout the district—with literally hundreds of selections (including some brewed right here at our own Town Hall Brewery!)

and more at Malabari Kitchen.
Looking for breakfast? No problem, we’ve got you covered. Among many of the West Bank restaurants that serve a special menu for brunch, on weekends the Triple Rock serves up a dish of incredible comfort food along with one of the best bloodies in town, or stop in for an amazing scramble courtesy of The Wienery which was featured on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” Where’s the best burger on the West Bank, or who has the best sambusa? The jury is still out and your options are numerous. You’ll have to try them all to see!

LIVE MUSIC
IN THE DISTRICT
A
lively rhythm is the heartbeat of the West Bank neighborhood, where music has stitched together the fabric of our community for decades. Many legends have graced the stages of the West Bank—from The Jayhawks to Bob Dylan. One of the original stomping grounds of the Rhymesayers crew, the West Bank is also the birthplace of Alt Country and home of the original Electric Fetus record store! The neighborhood is home to many live music venues, with a variety of options and genres nightly. Along Cedar Ave you’ll find the iconic Triple Rock Social club and the Cedar Cultural Center along with a large number of bars with live music nightly. Continue past 94 to the southern edge of the district and you’ll find The Whiskey Junction and the Cabooze, hosting both local and international acts. Throughout the summer months the West Bank boasts festivals and outdoor concerts, from Palmer’s annual Palmfest each July to Cedar Cultural Center’s Global Roots festival. The only limit to your music experience on the West Bank will be your own calendar of available dates. ABOVE: During the summer, you can enjoy music outdoors on the Cedar Cultural Center’s plaza and throughout the West Bank.

GETTING TO THE WEST BANK
T
he West Bank neighborhood is one of the most easyto-get-to neighborhoods in Minneapolis. Accessible by both Blue Line and Green Line light rails, we’re a quick stop away from the heart of Downtown and a 25-30 minute train ride from the Mall of America. A stop along the 22, 7 and 2 Metro Transit bus routes, the West Bank is also one of several stops on the Campus Connector University of Minnesota shuttle. While on the West Bank you can park in one of our many parking lots or in the metered spaces along Cedar Ave and Riverside. Other street parking in the neighborhood generally require permits, please be aware of all signs and City regulations when parking. The West Bank is also super bike friendly, with the Hiawatha Bike Trail (accessible via the Midtown Greenway) crossing the neighborhood behind Currie Park right next to the Blue Line Light Rail station. If you’re visiting during the non-winter seasons, consider a Nice Ride - The Twin Cities’ public bike sharing system with several stations in the neighborhood.

WEST BANK’S HISTORY
M
inneapolis was founded in 1855 on the west bank of the river opposite the falls of St Anthony. By 1870, Minneapolis on the west bank and St. Anthony on the east bank formed the largest flourproducing center in the world. Between 1860 and 1900, a thriving community of immigrants from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and northern Germany poured in to settle the Minnesota Territory, many of whom worked in the milling and lumber industries on the Mississippi River. The West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis has been the place where immigrant energy, radical politics and campus culture collide. That rich, occasionally volatile, history has created one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the Twin Cities. In the 1960s and 1970s, the area attracted hippies, intellectuals, actors, artists and musicians. Presently, the Cedar-Riverside
neighborhood boasts the largest community of immigrants in the Twin Cities, continuing a long history of ethnic and cultural diversity. East Africans are the latest wave of foreign-born residents, following the Europeans of a century and more ago and the Vietnamese and other Asians of just twenty years back. The neighborhood is triangular-shaped with three definitive boundaries: the Mississippi River on the east side, Interstate 94 on the south side, and Interstate 35W on the west side. Thousands live in this eclectic Minneapolis neighborhood known as the West Bank. The community is an interesting blend of tattooed punks, longhaired hippies and Somali families. The West Bank brings artists, teachers, students, and scholars together across disciplines to share knowledge and ideas, talent and inspiration. The presence of the University of Minnesota and Augsburg Colleges contribute a progressive flavor to the neighborhood. The area is home to theaters, music clubs, coffee shops, sports bars, co-ops, unique shops, ethnic and vegetarian restaurants, and historic buildings. DOING GOOD
ON THE WEST BANK
T
he West Bank is not only one of the best places in the world, but it’s home to a huge number of nonprofits that are making the world a better place to be. From the African Development Center to your friends at the West Bank Business Association (that’s us!) there are a variety of nonprofits serving community members, businesses, artists and residents.
The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition inspires people to bicycle and advocates for a city where everyone feels comfortable riding, providing leadership in Minneapolis and serving as a model for other bike-friendly cities around the world. Pillsbury United Communities works across Minneapolis to foster the resilience and self-sufficiency of individuals, families and community as a whole, and there’s a hub right here on the West Bank—the Brian Coyle Center! Theatre in the Round is the largest community theater in Minneapolis, providing opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Our West Bank nonprofits not only work for the greater good, but the local good as well. Neighborhood nonprofits partner with local businesses schools for regular clean-ups where we pick up trash, remove graffiti, nurture community gardens and curate public art.
ABOVE: We live here, we work here, we learn here, please help keep our neighborhood clean! Friends help spruce up the neighborhood during regular clean-ups.
