‘‘This work is at a very early stage and no decisions have yet been made,’’ spokesman Andrew Birks said. Advocacy group LeadWest has welcomed the prospect of partnerships between universities and local education providers. ‘‘We need to increase education opportunities in Melbourne’s west at all levels,’’ business manager Craig Rowley said. ‘‘The relative size of manufacturing will decrease and other sectors in our economy will grow. ‘‘We need people with those skills when the new jobs open up.’’ Mr Rowley said more choices and competition ‘‘will help lift everyone’s game’’. The council said it had been liaising with Ballarat and Deakin universities and would welcome a broader offering of higher education in Wyndham.

MORE higher education options will be available in Wyndham as Ballarat University prepares to launch a locally based bachelor degree and Deakin University considers plans for expansion. The news raises hope for shorter commutes to class and greater competition in the higher education sector after decades of dominance by Victoria University. Ballarat University is set to sign an agreement with Wyndham Community and Education Centre to offer a bachelor of teaching at one of the centre’s 14 premises by the start of next year. University spokesman Matthew Freeman said a memorandum of understanding would be finalised on May 3. The three-year degree is expected to cater for more than 100 Wyndham residents enrolled in

certificate III and school-based vocational courses each year. Wyndham Community and Education Centre chief executive Jenny Barrera was confident the course would be met with an ‘‘excellent take-up’’. ‘‘Students often travel somewhere else as there aren’t a lot of university options in Wyndham, apart from at VU,’’ she said. ‘‘Many adults who come to us have left school early and are re-engaging with education, so applying to a university or big institution can be daunting. ‘‘This way, as long as they do well in their diploma, a position in the bachelor degree will just be an extension to that.’’ Deakin has confirmed it is also ‘‘investigating’’ establishing a presence in Wyndham to cater for significant population growth.

State presses council on landowner rebate BY LAURA LITTLE WYNDHAM Council should consider a rebate for landowners in the urban growth zone if it is concerned about rising rates, says the state government. As reported by the Weekly, residents in Wyndham’s north could face rates rises of up to 10 per cent after new regulations banned councils from applying differentials to urban growth zone properties without an approved precinct

structure plan. Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said the changes meant the council would have to remove a differential which levied urban growth properties at 10 per cent less than residential developed land. She accused the government of developing guidelines which would have an adverse financial impact on ratepayers. Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell hit back at suggestions ratepayers will be worse off under the new guidelines, saying councils would still be able to provide a rates discount to

growth zone landowners or defer their payments. ‘‘A council wanting to apply a discount to properties in the urban growth zone should use other tools, such as a rebate, rather than a differential rate,’’ Ms Powell said. She said the guidelines were developed to prevent councils from charging higher rates in the urban growth zone before areas were approved for development. Tarneit ratepayer Joe Magro called on the council to let ratepayers know how the new

guidelines would impact on their rates. ‘‘We believed that the intention [of the guidelines] was to control councils from increasing rates by drastic amounts. If this is the intent of the guidelines, it appears that council is simply changing the rules. Increasing our rates by up to 10 per cent would be an absolute disgrace given that our rates rose by over 100 per cent last year.’’ Ms Thompson said the council was yet to determine what impact the guidelines would have on next year’s budget.

‘Disease’ that was Vietnam BRENDAN Lynch doesn’t often speak about his service in Vietnam. But tomorrow, the Werribee RSL welfare officer will proudly march alongside his fellow veterans and take a moment to remember the importance of what they achieved. Mr Lynch was posted in Vietnam in 1970-71, leaving behind his wife and two young sons. He served as part of an air transport crew operating out of Saigon airfield and was responsible for moving cargo, troops, animals and locals up and down the country. Having joined the Royal Australian Air Force at 17, Mr Lynch didn’t object when he was called on to serve in Vietnam, viewing it as part of his job. But his experiences on returning to Australia taught him that many people had a different opinion about the war and didn’t understand what soldiers had gone through. Over the years, Mr Lynch discovered that only fellow Vietnam veterans could relate to what he experienced. ‘‘When I speak to people I don’t mention I went to Vietnam,’’ he says. ‘‘Veterans tend to stick together because we are the only ones that understand what we experienced.

Sacrifice honoured: Brendan Lynch says Vietnam veterans deserve respect. Picture: Mark Smith

‘‘It was a very different time when we came back. The population didn’t appreciate your service. It was an emotional time because you did what you thought was right and you found your fellow Australians treated you like you had a disease.’’ Tomorrow, Mr Lynch will take part in the

Werribee RSL’s service at the Watton Street cenotaph at 6.30am, before travelling to the city to march in the Anzac Day parade. He said he was proud to see younger generations embracing Anzac Day and honouring the sacrifices veterans made for their country. ‘‘As the years have gone by, the crowd has got

bigger but I am still not happy about the ignorance some people have of the day. There are some people who don’t know what an RSL is. ‘‘We need to educate people better. We are all individuals and we all experienced the war differently. We all have stories to tell.’’ — Laura Little

Hospital beds to remain closed amid doubt over funding WERRIBEE Mercy Hospital has flagged permanent bed closures due to uncertainty about federal funding beyond July. Despite the federal government returning $1.4 million to the hospital, management is reluctant to reopen all beds that were closed due to budget cuts because it is not known if the funding will continue after the financial year ends. The hospital was forced to reduce elective surgeries and close up to 15 beds in January following a decision to retrospectively reduce Victorian hospital funding by $107 million.

The cuts came after new census data showed a decline in the state’s projected population growth. Mercy Public Hospitals executive director Linda Mellors welcomed the reinstated funding, which would allow staff to reverse surgery reductions and reopen some of the beds previously closed. But Dr Mellors said a reversal of all the cutbacks was unlikely. ‘‘Given the uncertainty over funding after July this year, it is likely some beds will remain closed,’’ she said.

‘‘The Commonwealth government funding has been reinstated for this financial year only. If this remains the case, Werribee Mercy Hospital will again be placed in a very difficult position and will be required to reduce some services.’’ The federal government has denied claims it used faulty population data to slash funding, instead blaming the state government for ripping $616 million out of health. Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard said the special payment, made directly to hospital administrators, was good news for Wyndham patients.

“The Victorian government’s actions have resulted in bed closures, emergency department shut downs and the postponement of elective surgery. By dealing directly with hospital administrators, my government is ensuring that this vital hospital funding actually gets to where it is needed.’’ Victorian Health Minister David Davis said the potential for pain was not over. “The Commonwealth government still intends to strip a further $368 million from Victorian hospital funding over the next three years.” — Nick Toscano

Experts welcome $34.7m windfall BY NICK TOSCANO MENTALLY ill patients will have better access to care when a 54-bed mental health facility opens at Werribee Mercy Hospital in 2016. Health experts say the $34.7 million investment, announced on Sunday, will help ease the squeeze in the hospital’s emergency ward. The new unit is expected to nearly double the hospital’s mental health capacity from 29 to 54 beds. Ten beds will be high-dependency – used for high-risk patients who are violent or suicidal and need monitoring – and four beds will be used to assess people experiencing short-term mental health needs like psychosis or drug overdose. Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge and Premier Denis Napthine said next month’s budget would slate $34.7 million to fund the two-storey facility, with a floor area of more than 4400 square metres, to replace the existing mental health building at the same location. The surprise announcement has startled Wyndham’s health experts, who have long called for a major investment in mental health services. Werribee Mercy is regularly forced to turn away patients from the emergency department because beds are taken up by people waiting more than 24 hours for a spot in the existing mental health unit. Latest Health Department figures

show nearly 70 per cent of mental health patients waited longer than eight hours to be transferred to an appropriate bed – way higher than the statewide performance benchmark of 20 per cent. Mercy Health chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said the funding was a boost for the Werribee Mercy, which was feeling the strain of Wyndham’s massive population growth. “Not only will mental health patients spend less time waiting in our emergency department for a vacant bed, but our community clients will have greater access to required inpatient treatment programs.’’ Westgate GP Network chairman Joe Garra said mental health services were among Wyndham’s most pressing needs. Dr Garra said at least one in five patients at his Werribee general practice came in for mental health problems, and about half presented a secondary mental health problem. ‘‘Having so many more inpatient beds means they can quickly get patients into hospital rather than having to support them in the emergency department or in the community,’’ he said. ‘‘When I’ve got someone who is quite depressed and talking about suicide, we ring the CAT [Crisis Assessment Team], but there’s often a delay because they are so busy, run off their feet, and it could take hours before they’re seen.’’

Linfox worker won’t accept sacking BY GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK A SACKED Linfox worker employed under the company’s indigenous program is fighting to get his job back. Werribee South man Michael Hogan, a picker and packer at the company’s Laverton warehouse, was the only union member among four employees who were laid off prior to their period of employment reaching six months. The National Union of Workers says once workers have been employed for six months, they are entitled to claim unfair dismissal. The union expects more workers will be sacked in coming weeks. Union organiser Dario Mujkic said the day after Mr Hogan was fired, he was replaced by an ‘‘indirectly engaged casual’’, who had no rights under the company’s agreement. Mr Hogan, 60, said he was gutted and would have difficulty finding work at his age. ‘‘All the time I was there I was never sick, never late, worked hard, worked until the job was finished, which was sometimes two hours later,’’ he said. ‘‘I was the model employee. I had an unblemished record. It’s all pretty rough.’’ Mr Hogan said he was unexpectedly called in to a room by a

superior who told him: ‘‘I deeply apologise, but you’re being laid off.’’ Mr Mujkic said the casual worker who replaced Mr Hogan would not have to be converted to a full-time employee after working 12 months. The union has applied to the Fair Work Commission to have Mr Hogan reinstated with conciliation scheduled for May 28. ‘‘He does have a right to make a claim for what’s called a general protection dispute,’’ Mr Mujkic said. ‘‘From our point of view, the termination is not lawful and Michael should be given his job back.’’ Linfox spokesman Gary Max said he was unable to comment. ‘‘As this issue is now listed for conciliation, we will not discuss any individual’s details in the media. Mr Hogan was part of Linfox’s indigenous employment program, a program we are very proud of. ‘‘We reject the claim that Linfox is abusing the indigenous training subsidy.’’ Union representatives will meet with Linfox management on Monday. Protracted pay dispute ends

TEACHERS at Wyndham’s public schools are back to planning excursions and extracurricular activities after a lengthy pay dispute with the state government ended last week. The deal, which is yet to be ratified, comes 18 months after negotiations began between the government, principals, teachers and education support staff. Industrial action culminated in three 24-hour strikes, a series of staggered half-day work stoppages and teachers refusing to write on students’ report cards. The deal includes pay increases of between 16 and 20 per cent for teachers, including a $1000 signing bonus. But the government has released different figures – a 3 per cent pay rise in 2013, 2.75 per cent in 2014 and 2.75 per cent in 2015. Critics say the disparity between the figures is because,

Done deal: Julie Mason (centre) and teachers Michele Sheppard and Danielle Harrison welcome the end of the pay dispute. Picture: Mark Smith under the new agreement, progression up the pay scale is no longer guaranteed. Teachers will ratify the pay deal in a ballot next month. Premier Denis Napthine and

the education union said the deal represented a ‘‘historic partnership’’. ‘‘This agreement represents a win-win outcome,’’ Dr Napthine said. He said the ‘‘circuit breaker’’

was his decision last month to publicly drop the government’s push to introduce performancebased pay. Baden Powell P-9 College principal Julie Mason said the school’s 171 teachers and support staff were breathing a sigh of relief. She said the deal seemed ‘‘a fair outcome, especially given the tough financial times for everyone’’. Ms Mason said staff had since organised two school camps. ‘‘These are the things people don’t realise – the number of hours beyond a school day we put in to give a richness in education,’’ she said. Rob Graham, assistant principal at The Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing, said staff were glad the dispute was over. He said the 120 teachers at the school had not had enough time to fully analyse the new deal, but were eagerly awaiting more information.

‘Free’ ride on the rise FARE evasion on the Werribee line will continue to rise unless the state government brings back ticket inspectors, says a public transport lobby group. Public Transport Victoria data released last week reveals that 8.7 per cent of train passengers on the Werribee and Williamstown lines are taking a free ride. The figures were compiled from a October 2012 survey across Melbourne’s public transport network. Sandringham was the worst line for fare evasion with 12.9 per cent of passengers not paying. The South Morang and Hurstbridge lines had the lowest rates (7.1 per cent). Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said while fare evasion on the Werribee line was not as high as other areas, it demonstrated the need for changes. ‘‘We have a fare collection system that operates on honesty. Nothing will

change until there are staff asking to see your ticket.’’ Dr Morton said fare evasion was often higher in areas of social and economic disadvantage as people chose between buying a ticket or food. ‘‘If you are someone who struggles

to make ends meet, the cost of a ticket versus the probability of getting caught and fined for fare evading works in your favour.’’ Fare evasion costs the public transport network about $61.7 million each year. — Laura Little

POINT Cook residents who attended a ‘sneak peak’ of Williams Landing train station ahead of its opening this Sunday doubt it will be as successful as the state government expects. Hundreds of people attended the station’s open day on April 21, but excitement was dampened by worries about insufficient parking and new bus links adding to morning peak-hour traffic snarls. Point Cook Action Group spokeswoman Alice Osborne said the 500-space car park was about three-quarters full on the open day. ‘‘The station itself is fantastic news – with a level crossing, and pedestrian ramps from both Williams Landing and Point Cook – it can only help our public transport needs,’’ she said.

‘‘There are, unfortunately, several issues . . . and only time will tell which of these will become serious problems for commuters after the station is open.’’ There are five bus links to the new station, including three routes through Point Cook, one from Hoppers Crossing via Wyndham Vale and Truganina and another from Hoppers Crossing via Point Cook. The new routes will operate on a 22-minute timetable and replace the 413 and 416 Hoppers Crossing-Laverton buses, which run at 40-minute intervals. But without a separate bus lane on Palmers Road, Ms Osborne said buses wouldn’t be able to get through traffic to the station. Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the new bus routes would ease congestion in the short term.

Same-sex couple says ‘I do’ to NZ nuptials BY LAURA LITTLE TRUGANINA’S Lana Callus is among the many Australians considering travelling to New Zealand to tie the knot after the country’s parliament legalised same-sex marriage. Ms Callus is a vocal campaigner for samesex marriage, taking part in a mass wedding on ABC TV’s In Gordon Street Tonight with partner Marty Ghiller last year. She also sent a petition with hundreds of signatures to Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard, calling on her to legalise gay marriage. While Ms Callus thought many people in same-sex relationships would travel to New Zealand to get married, she wanted the federal government to follow in its neighbour’s footsteps and change Australia’s laws. ‘‘We know the minute we hit customs in Australia [the marriage] won’t mean anything, but we want to stand up in front of our friends and family and marry the one we love. ‘‘We are not asking to change the world. We just want the right to get married.’’ Ms Callus said she would feel like a second-

class citizen until she received the right to marry in Australia. An attempt to debate changes to the Marriage Act in September last year was voted down 98-42. Werribee’s Michael Young, who started a social group for Wyndham’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer [GLBTIQ] residents, said it was ‘‘embarrassing’’ that the government and opposition did not support gay marriage. ‘‘This basic human right is being denied to us. The government and opposition are still giving in to the minority religious view and ignoring the overwhelming opinion of Australians.’’ Ms Gillard said she believed marriage was between a man and a woman but would again allow Labor MPs a conscience vote on the issue. Opposition leader Tony Abbott said he did not want Australia’s marriage laws to change but the Coalition would consider allowing MPs a conscience vote after the September election.

Man, 69, dies at back-burn fire BY NICK TOSCANO POLICE have revealed that a man found dead after a grass fire at Little River last week was a 69-year-old farmer who lived in Little RiverRipley Road. His body was found lying facedown in the backyard of the property on April 16, after CFA crews rushed there to battle a small but fast-running fire. Little River CFA captain Terry Hedt said the man had been trying to back-burn grass and lost control of the blaze. ‘‘The poor fellow had a fire going and it just got away from him. ‘‘He must have panicked and [been] stressed,’’ he said. The fire brigade notified police and paramedics. The man was alone at the property at the time.

Mr Hedt said the fire burnt a shed full of mechanical items, causing clouds of thick, black smoke. ‘‘There were a few explosions of what was possibly fuel tanks or gas cylinders,’’ he said. Eight fire crews took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The man’s body was found on burnt grass, but investigators have confirmed the man did not die from burns. Police are preparing a report for the coroner. Geelong police are still investigating another grass fire in Little RiverRipley Road that burned 50 hectares on January 6. Police suspect the fire was deliberately lit, but no one has been charged. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Cr Bob Fairclough (pictured) said residents often asked if plants and animals discovered in the area were native or exotic. “Sanctuary Lakes is on the doorstep of Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands, two areas internationally recognised for their abundant bird life with sightings of more than 200 species, some of which are on the endangered list. However, if we want these precious areas to continue to thrive, we must look after the Skeleton Creek corridor.” The event is at the corner of Monterey Bay Drive and Lighthouse Point Close, Sanctuary Lakes, 10.30am-1.30pm.

Digging a future Budding horticulturalists can learn their trade at Werribee Park with a training college open at the historic homestead. The Australian College of Agriculture and Horticulture is offering certificates II and III in amenity horticulture as part of a Parks Victoria and AMES ‘Beyond the Boundaries’ program. Eighteen future horticulturists, including students from Wyndham high schools, are enrolled in the program and recently replanted the park’s parterre garden with 7000 flowering annuals. Student Harley Graham plans to become a landscape gardener and said the program had taught him about different types of gardening. Training co-ordinator Alvin Gopal said the location meant students could immediately practice what they were learning.

INSIDESTORY

r

Pocket

cket The clock’s ticking for four-time Olympian Kristi Harrower, Sarah Harris reports, as the plucky point guard prepares to call time on her sporting career.

ad punters seen Kristi Harrower hobbling down the hallway of her Keilor home last month before the Women’s National Basketball League championship, the odds of the Bendigo Spirit winning the title would have blown out. But on that crucial match morning Harrower woke crippled, just as she had for half the season. “It got to the stage where I had to put my shoes on straight away in the morning because I couldn’t walk without my orthotics. My Achilles were that painful,’’ she reveals. ’’Even to walk down that little step in the hall hurt so much.” For the latter part of the season, the veteran pocket-rocket could hardly train. “They were just trying to save me for the games,” she says matter-of-factly. Medical professionals might have questioned whether she should have been allowed on court at all, but when she sets her mind nothing stops Harrower – fierce determination being the hallmark of a stellar career that’s included four Olympic medals, junior and senior world championship gold, and now two WNBL titles. “I can play through pain. Once I step over that line I will play with that pain. Yeah, you feel it, but it’s like, you know what, let’s just get on with the job and get it done.” Harrower has always defied the odds and often the prevailing logic. After tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in 2001 her surgeon predicted she wouldn’t be able to play past the age of 29. But last year she lined up for Australia for her fourth Olympics – ever the shortest and, then at 37, also the oldest member of the Opals, silencing any doubters with a 21-point contribution to the Opals’ 83-74 bronze medal win over Russia. Harrower has never allowed her height – a mere 162cm or 5ft4in – to handicap her, walking tall even in America, a land of giants where 196cm (6ft5in) players are “bred everyday”. It was with her first WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury, that she earned the nickname Shrimpy Shrimp. But as she confides: “I never feel short when I am on

H

court – never. Of course when I see myself in a photo standing next to all the girls then I realise, hey I’m short. I think it’s just that I have so much determination when I step over that white line – it doesn’t matter.” Harrower’s willingness to take it up to bigger players extends off court. It’s one of the reasons she refused to swap the No.10 jersey she wore for her whole Australian career when it was proposed the numbers should ascend in height order. As a member of the players’ union she has not always endeared herself to Basketball Australia by pointing out, for example, the inequity of funding that forces the Opals to fly cattle class while the men’s team, the Boomers – who have never medalled – stretch out in business class. It still rankles. “They rely on the fact the girls will represent the Opals no matter what because the Opals are successful. We go along with it because we want to represent our country, but things need to change in our league and things need to change for the Opals.” Although the smaller guards have to fight twice as hard as their taller team-mates to draw attention when it comes to the big-money contracts, the professional game has been good to Harrower. “This house is because of Russia – that’s the truth of it,” she says candidly. “I’ve been lucky enough that my dad has put me in the right direction with my money. I have always saved and never been someone who will go out and spend money on designer clothes and stuff. “I’m sure if I played overseas for a bit longer, maybe another three or four years, I’d maybe not ever have to work.” As it was there were many good reasons to come home – not the least being the minus 30-degree temperatures in Yekaterinburg, the fourth largest city in Russia and Harrower’s last overseas signing. “When you look at it I was overseas for such a long time. You learn so much and you grow up so much from playing overseas, but it is hard. When you leave it is summer here. You miss Christmas, you miss family.” Harrower and her then-boyfriend now-husband Aaron Willoughby – a primary school teacher and former VFL player with the Coburg Tigers – really worked to keep their long-distance relationship going. “We were together for eight years before we married. It hasn’t always been easy,

but we knew [living apart] was not forever and if I could stick it out it would set us up.” In the end, coming back to Bendigo to help position the home team for its first premiership under the hawkeye of dad/coach Bernie seemed not just natural, but necessary. “I felt I had achieved a lot for Australia, but I hadn’t achieved a lot in Australia. I had only one WNBL title and that was with Adelaide, because Bendigo weren’t even in the league back then.” It was in Bendigo that it all started when – according to family legend – Harrower picked up a basketball at the age of three. Back in those early junior years it was mum Janice who was her coach and sister Kylee who looked like she would star. “When we were younger my sister was actually better than me,’’ Harrower says. “She was a great shooter, but didn’t have the drive I had.” But as team manager Kylee was very much part of Bendigo Spirit’s victory over the Townsville Fire as was mum Janice, who is one of the club’s volunteer caterers. Cut to match morning last month and Harrower, who turned 38 six days earlier, was feeling the pressure as never before. “I was tired and stressed,” she admits. “This was bigger for me than the Olympics, because at the Olympics you are away from everyone and you just go out and play. “Here, I am in my home town with people who have followed my whole career watching me and those stands were packed. To win this and to win it with dad was so incredibly special.” All the more so as the game would likely be her last, though she can’t quite bring herself to say it, even now. Harrower has made no secret of her wish to start a family, but admits “because basketball has been my life it is sort of hard to walk away. “But if I did walk away this off season at least I am walking away with a great team that I played with and a great record. “I want to be remembered off court as someone who was always easy to get along with, that I had the time to talk to anybody and was not big-headed or selfish.” It’s a modest ambition for Australian basketball’s biggest little star who has always been the game’s perfect 10. Stand and deliver A horse-drawn coach rolled through Hoppers Crossing last week as part of a tour raising funds for research into childhood cancer. Led by Dean Duyvestyn (pictured), the group of 20 people hopes to drum up at least $50,000 for a new microscope to allow Royal Children’s Hospital researchers to analyse solid tumours better. Mr Duyvestyn, 38, has been throwing support behind ‘Cancer in Kids @ The Royal Children’s Hospital’ since he had cancer treatment when he was two. He had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour, after which his family was told he had a 40-50 per cent chance of survival. Donations: cikacoachdrive.com.au

Werribee Primary School pupils hopped on their bikes last week for the school’s annual ‘rollathon’ fund-raiser. Pupils including Lucas (pictured) were sponsored to complete laps of the athletics track and raise money for equipment and other needs. The event was postponed because of March’s heatwave and took place last Wednesday. Acting principal Sue Osborne said the event was a good way for pupils to have fun while staying active.

Re: New impetus for bike trail plan (Weekly, April 3):

Disgraceful that Labor and Liberal governments won’t do a thing and never will. Right under Julia Gillard’s nose. And this Liberal state government is useless. I am voting for the Greens.

The Napthine government is excited to announce an overpass to complete the next stage of the Federation Trail. There’s only one problem: the bridge doesn’t complete it and, along with the current plan, makes a mess of the project. Under the government plan for the trail we will see major parts of the extension kept on roads throughout Spotswood, defeating the very purpose of the trail — to provide a superior and safer commute for cyclists in the western suburbs and separate cycle traffic from major roads.

Four-hundred spaces in a car park is still not enough! That’s going to fill up by 7am. They should be doing multi-level parking for about 1000-2000 cars or more. It’s like they’re planning for the 1980s rather than for the future growth, and right now, 400 is not near enough.

Time to enjoy good life Immaculately presented, this home is designed to attract, writes Mark Bunker his Porter Davis gem in Innisfail estate is suited to anyone who wants a stylish, lowmaintenance house in a quiet street, and with no further work needed. It’s strong on presentation inside and out, and its proximity to the Boardwalk, shops, cafes and childcare also adds to its lifestyle scope. Big, elevated merbau steps lead to the front porch, with a concrete footpath and stone aggregate driveway either side. A porcelain-tiled entrance hall reveals an open lounge room with shelving, plush carpet and a

T

small retreat with space for cabinetry. The main bedroom has a feature wall, walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with dual basins and timber veneer cupboards. Further down the hallway are three other spacious bedrooms with built-in wardrobes; they share a sparkling bathroom and separate toilet. A light-filled study has plantation shutters and the family-meals hub at the back has low-sheen porcelain tiles, feature walls and a split-system unit. The kitchen has a large stone-topped island bench, a dishwasher, Technika 900 mm cooker,

high-gloss cabinetry and a walk-in pantry with window. A large laundry at the back has external access as does the family-meals area where expansive sliding doors open onto the merbau entertainment deck. The backyard has buffalo lawn, space for kids to play, and is bordered by Colorbond fencing incorporating a stylish timber feature. The side yard is paved with exposed stone aggregate and has a terrific barbecue area adorned with raked ceiling, a dining courtyard, and a garden bed designed for a vegie patch.

3 bedroom brick veneer home on Residential 1 Zoned Block of Land, approx 5,510m2. This is a unique block offering the opportunity to secure in excess of 1.25 acres for personal use or indeed take advantage of the development potential (STCA). EOI ends 5pm 10th May 2013.

It’s just too cute his house ticks two important boxes: it’s full of character and has plenty of space. The family-sized residence has three bedrooms, including main with renovated en suite. Parents can relax and entertain in the large lounge-dining room, while youngsters have their own space in the upstairs rumpus room. The kitchen has received a facelift with new stainless-steel appliances and black benchtops and tiled splashbacks that contrast well against the white cupboards. The house is centrally heated and there’s also a reverse-cycle unit, polished floorboards, downlights, side access to

Saratoga smiles Point Cook estate is proving popular with buyers wanting to build ewly engaged couple Matt Flynn and Tanie Cordoba have celebrated a proud moment with the purchase of a house in Saratoga estate in Point Cook. “When we started researching to buy our first home, we were interested in buying an older-style three bedroom home in Bentleigh that we could renovate and make more livable,” Mr Flynn said. “But after looking into our options we realised we could build a brand new four-bedroom home in Point Cook — closer to the city — for the same price. “After deciding that Point Cook was the suburb for us, we chose a Simonds home and set out to find the perfect block of land to match.” Building on their house began in January, making them the first purchasers to start the process, with others following soon after. The couple said they were looking forward to improved access to the city and the on-site facilities available, including a gym and cafe´. “Saratoga is a few minutes from the freeway and with the new freeway interchange about to

N

start construction we will have almost direct access to it which is really important for our jobs,’’ Mr Flynn said. “Plus the new train station at Williams Landing is a few minutes’ drive away, a huge bonus for when my fiance´ wants to train in to work instead.’’ For more information, visit the Saratoga sales office at Point Cook Town Centre or their website.

Wyndham City is working hard to address the issue of stray cats, and other responsible pet ownership issues, through our draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2013-16. Stray cats are a major issue because only 7% of the cats that come through the Pound each year are fitted with a tag or microchip. Stray cats pose a potential disease risk to registered cats, so it’s in everybody’s best interests to tackle this issue together as a community. We will run a public education plan about feeding stray cats to encourage residents to either assist to remove stray cats or take ownership of them. Council also runs a cat trapping program in commercial, industrial and environmentally sensitive areas, ‘hot spot’ trapping and has an arrangement with local vets for discount cat desexing and free registrations for cats and dogs under six months old. The draft Domestic Animal Management Plan is open for comment until Friday 24th May 2013. For more information call us on 9742 0777 or visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au - Heather ZO330269

War’s silences unfold Armed conflicts have always been a part of this historian’s life, writes Nick Toscano argaret Campbell’s dad wore a badge that said ‘‘rejected volunteer’’. It saved him from the white feather they gave cowards. ‘‘Mum says it’s shameful he can’t fight in the war, but when dad stands on the beach, staring out over the sea, he’s like a prisoner of war at home.’’ Softly reciting one of her poems included in her recently completed masters thesis, the 77-year-old Werribee author and historian reflects on how war has always been etched in her consciousness. As a child of the World War II years, Ms Campbell lived through the Korea and Vietnam wars and worked at the Point Cook RAAF base. She has lived in Wyndham since doing her ‘‘rookies’’ in 1954. Her Victoria University thesis – the latest addition to an impressive

M

catalogue of fiction, poetry and Wyndham-based history books – is similarly steeped in the theme of war and explores the legend of the Anzac

that looms large in Australia’s cultural psyche. ‘‘I’ve written a lot of short stories and a lot of poetry, and I didn’t realise how many were about war until I put them all together,’’ she says. Titled Searching the Silences of War, her study is part theory and part young adult novel. Finding Sophie, set in Truganina in 1997, is told from the perspective of a teenage girl staying at her grandparents’ farm with relatives including a Vietnam veteran and an anti-war protester. Ms Campbell delves into the ‘‘silences’’ of wartime legend – the actuality of war masked behind mythology, generational repercussions and the omission of women in the Anzac story, such as nurses on hospital ships anchored at Gallipoli. ‘‘Nurses don’t count, they didn’t actually go to war’’ is the last line of another of her poems, in which a

Labour of love: Former air force switchboard operator Margaret Campbell’s thesis explores the untold stories behind wartime histories. Main picture: Cathy Jackson woman ‘‘wakes again to screams’’ and gun clatter as she tends to young men blown apart by landmines. Ms Campbell says her thesis was heavily influenced by having war so inextricably bound to her life,

along with oral history accounts from more than 160 Wyndham immigrants in her 2005 book, From Here to There. She will don a cap and gown for her graduation on May 15.

Putting The Trust Back Into Real Estate Our purpose and mission is to put the trust back into real estate by treating all consumers with honesty, respect & dignity. We also believe in thinking differently and challenging the status quo of typical real estate methods by always placing our client’s interests ahead of our own. We are in search of 2 people to join our current sales team. Our system does not suit everybody. The hours, particularly in the early stages, are many and the effort required to succeed is high. However, while the effort required is high, so too are the rewards. We are fanatical about our skill levels and train constantly to improve our level of service to both homesellers and home-buyers. There is intensive training (at no charge to you) prior to commencement, followed by a series of tests. There is also ongoing training and testing at all stages of a career in real estate. Like our clients we also like to look after our team members, there is a secure salary package of $77,000 + bonuses. If you succeed your total income (salary + bonuses) should be at least $120,000 per year. If you have a strong desire to improve your current life, have thought about a change of career and live locally in your own home then please call for an information booklet with full details. You will be proud to be in real estate; it is a great life.

Economy diesel for Civic Derek Ogden reviews Honda’s new diesel hatch he modern automobile story of better fuel economy with sparkling performance just keeps being told. Now Honda adds a new chapter to the tale with the Civic Hatch DTi-S diesel. Born of Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology philosophy ‘to balance environmental efficiency with the dynamic performance expected of a Honda’, the made-in-Britain, 1.6-litre engine produces 88kW of power and up to 300Nm of torque.

T

Powerhouse: The aero package is now complemented by an economical turbo-diesel engine.

Mated only with a six-speed manual transmission, Honda calculates the Civic diesel uses a miserly four litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. On an introductory foray into the Blue Mountains the Civic diesel came up with a relaxed drive, eating up the steep ascents with ease. Disc brakes all around, the front ventilated, hooked up to an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, pulled up the Civic confidently on steep descents. All this was accomplished with a minimum intrusion of engine and road noise into the comfortable cabin. The Civic diesel hatch is not lacking in quality additions and adornments, taking on a majority of the features of the petrol model, plus technical innovations from its hybrid stablemates. Like the standard Civic hatchback the DTi-S shape is predicated on optimal aerodynamics. A spoiler is integrated into the tailgate, while daytime running lights increase visibility to oncoming traffic.

Optimum lines: Aerodynamic shape of the body is a feature of all Honda Civic models.

Prodigal Pulsar returns to the fold Ewan Kennedy road tests Nissan’s popular sedan transmission) offering smoother acceleration and broader gear ratios than a conventional automatic. Interior space is impressive. New Pulsar has a longer cabin than its main rivals, making for extensive rear-seat legroom. Soft-touch segments — dashboard and driver’s door armrest — plus leather seat accents imbue the cabin with a feeling of quality. Pulsar’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine develops peak power of 96kW and maximum torque of 174Nm. It’s mated with a CVT, resulting in a quiet, continuous delivery of power. During extended open road cruising ‘our’ Nissan Pulsar Ti used five to six litres per 100 kilometres. In town it recorded nine to 10 litres per hundred. It’s still early days, but it’s already looking as though dumping the Tiida and reintroducing the Pulsar is paying big dividends in sales. It’s not just the name change that’s doing the work, our week in the Pulsar has impressed us with its competence in many fields.

he name ‘Pulsar’ is back in the Nissan fold, replacing the much-unloved ‘Tiida’ tag to the delight of just about everyone in any way connected with Nissan in Australia — be they owners, buyers or sellers. The subject of this road test is a top-of-the-line 1.8-litre Pulsar Ti sedan. Four doors are the only body type on offer at this time. Pulsar hatch, including the sporty SSS powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, is due Down Under mid-year. The five new Pulsar sedans range from just $19,990 to the $28,990 Ti we drove, and there is plenty to choose from both in features and price. The Pulsar has Nissan’s new style trapezoidal radiator grille and large wraparound headlights. Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, the Pulsar Ti’s low stance and belt line add to its appearance of length. The new Pulsar comes in three specification levels: ST, ST-L and Ti. They can be ordered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or Nissan’s new Xtronic CVT (continuously variable

announced significant job cuts at its Adelaide factory, primarily because its locally made Cruze is struggling to compete against imported cars such as the Cerato because of the high value of the Australian dollar. Despite recent price cuts the entrylevel Cruze is still $1500 dearer than the comparable Cerato in a pricesensitive and competitive market. The new Kia Cerato sedan is longer, wider and lower than the outgoing model with shorter overhangs. All of which make for a sleeker styling aimed

at the 20-something buyer. It’s also lighter by an average of 50 kilograms for reduced fuel consumption. Although it’s classified as a small passenger car, the Cerato is a genuine mid-sized family sedan. The price of the entry-level Cerato S ($19,990 plus on-road costs) is only $600 more than the outgoing model but that’s not an apples-for-apples comparison because it now comes with a smaller engine, with a new 1.8-litre replacing the previous 2.0-litre unit.

This week someone who is not only a very good friend of mine, but has been a mentor since I was about 18. He played 261 games with the Bulldogs. He has been very influential on my career and my life and he has a son playing AFL SW: Welcome Steve Wallis Tell us your story, you are a Leongatha boy.

BY LANCE JENKINSON WILLIAMSTOWN won its 10th straight western derby on Sunday, downing cross-town rivals Werribee by 83 points at Burbank Oval. The Seagulls dominated from start to finish. Kicking with a slight breeze in the first term Williamstown had 12 shots on goal to two, kicking 6.6 to take a massive 40-point lead into the quarter-time break. The Tigers threatened at times in the second quarter, but poor kicking for goal (2.6 for the quarter) and wasteful ball use undercut their efforts. Williamstown’s pressure around the ball was exceptional, continuously forcing Tiger turnovers. Werribee’s forward line never fired, with kicks either sailing over heads or falling short near a pack of players. Leading by 41 points at half-time, the Seagulls kept Werribee goalless as they piled on five goals in the third quarter. Another five came in the final term to extend the lead to the day’s biggest margin. Patrick Veszpremi was outstanding for the Seagulls and was in absolutely everything, including the goals — he kicked three. Ben Brown was best for Werribee. Late into the final quarter he was still pushing himself and presenting well. Seagulls coach Peter German said his side was able to maintain a high standard for four quarters. “We had a game plan that we knew was going to be demanding, could we handle that for four quarters. I couldn’t have been more pleased with the way we went about it. We were relentless in that regard, we’ve worked on our defensive side of the game. “The clearances were also really important, it gave our forward lots of opportunity.” Tigers coach Scott West said his team was “totally outworked — we didn’t come here expecting to get done by 80-odd points. “They won the stoppages, their workrate was two or three times as much as ours and you just can’t be outworked that much. Wally: Yes at 16 I came down and played with the Bulldogs in the under 19 competition, so the club put me through school. I did accounting part time as well as school. I actually started work in Werribee, at Werribee Mazda, when I was 18. SW: You retired in 1996, how do you see the game these days in comparison to your days. Wally: We were only part time footballers, we only trained three times a week and usually late in the afternoon because most of us worked. I think the big change in recovery and the fitness of the players is the fulltime aspect. Being able to manage your body daily is a lot easier than when you had people working fulltime. I think they expect a lot more out of their bodies these days. The only thing that worries me watching Mitch, is wondering how long his body will hold up to the rigors of AFL . SW: You played for a long time and you played with some great players-EJ Whitten, Charlie Sutton- Only joking. Who were some of the best you played with? Wally: I was on the end of Kelvin Templeton’s career at the Bulldogs, he was a standout player. Simon Beasley was a very good full forward. Other players like Brian Royal, Doug Hawkins were some I had the privilege of playing with. Not to embarrass you, but I think you were one of the standouts as well. SW: I appreciate that. As a father seeing Mitch live out his dream, how proud of that are you?

Wally: It was actually a relief. Mitch has been keen on pursuing AFL for a long time so it was good to see him go to the Bulldogs. Sue (my wife) and I watch the game differently than when I played. When you talk about your children you are protective and you want the best for them. SW: Have you got any advice for me because my 12 year old is very keen and I have three coming after that. Wally: All I can say is enjoy the journey and make sure you keep their heads square on their shoulders, keep them family orientated and allow them to play their footy but entertain other aspects of their life as well. With Mitch he loves his fishing, he loves going up the bush, he is doing accounting now and he is interested in my car yards so he has many other things happening in his life apart from football. SW: You have become a very successful businessman. How did that come about? Wally: In football I had to work hard to get the best out of what I did because I wasn’t as naturally gifted as some of the other players the same with work. I always wanted to be respected as a good businessman but I wanted to have that team environment that I had through football. We have 300 staff members and I sort of feel like their coach. SW: Away from work and football, what do you like doing? Wally: I love holidays. Whenever I get the chance to do some travelling around Australia I love that sort of stuff. We are a close family, a big family, so we do a lot of that as a family. SW: Thanks for your time.

Tigers rue a game of missed opportunities BY LANCE JENKINSON WERRIBEE did not reap the total benefits of its second-half dominance over La Trobe University in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1. The Tigers came back from two goals down and took a 3-2 lead, but could not put the visitors away and had to settle for a 3-3 draw at President’s Park. It was a bitter-sweet result for the Tigers, who felt they did enough to win, but were content to yield a point from a bogey team they have struggled to deal with in recent years. ‘‘At the start of the game, if you offered us a draw, you’ve never happy with a draw, but you’d take it because they’ve been our bogey side and we’ve struggled to score against them,’’ Tigers captain Ross Cowlishaw told the Weekly. ‘‘I think we were a bit unlucky not to come away with a win. ‘‘We created a lot more chances.’’ The Tigers have themselves to blame for failing to notch their first win of the season. Their opening 10 minutes were lacklustre on the back of an unsettled warm-up. La Trobe made them pay with two

Success in karate titles SAMURAI Karate, based in Laverton, Tarneit and Sunshine, claimed three gold, two silver and four bronze medals at the state AKF championships. The 15-strong team from Samurai featured six first-time representatives at the championships. Luke and Thomas Olsen fought it out for first and second in one of the strongest men’s divisions on the day, which featured Australian and Chilean representatives from last year’s world titles. Thomas emerged with the gold medal. Jai Hunt continued his development by winning gold in kumite cadets and bronze in the kata. Hunt has his sights set on the world titles later this year. Andy Do showed no first time nerves, taking gold in the cadets under-52kg division.

‘Our missed opportunities in the circle might be brought up in our review of the game. Our strikers were all guilty of missed chances.’ –Ross Cowlishaw goals in that time. ‘‘It was a very slow start,’’ Cowlishaw said. ‘‘Our warm-up was a bit out of whack and the boys were a bit unsettled. ‘‘We’ll have to address that during the week.’’ Once the Tigers settled, they were the better team. Goals to James Alfredini, Sam Huxtable and Joshua Pace gave them an unlikely one-goal lead, but it could have been more. ‘‘Our missed opportunities in the circle might be brought up in our review of the game,’’ Cowlishaw said. ‘‘Our strikers were all guilty of missed chances.’’ Goalkeeper Michael Alfredini made some crucial saves late in the game to deny La Trobe’s raids on his goal.

Matt McCubbin and Andrew Purcell were busy distributing the ball in the middle. Daniel Collins was good in short bursts off the bench, negating La Trobe’s key playmaker. For all their hard work over the opening two weeks, the Tigers have just two draws to show for it and will be desperate to notch their first win on the road against surprise packet Powerhouse-St Kilda on Saturday. Devils get a run on for easy win BY LANCE JENKINSON A BLISTERING five-minute block at the start of the fourth quarter has seen the Werribee Devils motor away from the Chelsea Gulls for a 90-61 win in the Big V women’s division 2. Devils coach Lloyd Klaman told the Weekly it was the most breathtaking basketball his team has played all season. ‘‘Instead of being stop-start, we ran and ran,’’ he said. ‘‘We were forcing turnovers and getting easy baskets because we running so hard. It was their best five minutes of basketball for the year.’’ The league-leading Devils have a 5-0 record to start the season. This is due to their balance line-up with the starters setting the tone, the bench doing a power of work and those on the outer creating competition for spots. ‘‘It’s a battle for the 10th, 11th and

It is lightening the work load on veterans Lisa Troyahn and Emma Coyne and giving the youngsters invaluable minutes in key parts of the game. ‘‘It’s not just the minutes, it’s the type of minutes they’re getting which

is important,’’ Klaman said. ‘‘The kids are playing through some rough situations and they’re getting a chance to play with the starters. ‘‘It’s a steep learning curve.’’ Troyahn and Coyne are still logging big numbers on reduced minutes. Troyahn was a monster inside the key with 24 points and 17 rebounds in 24 minutes, while Coyne posted 19 points, four steals and three assists in 25 minutes. The Devils will confront Coburg Giants at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night with revenge on the mind after the Giants beat them in the pre-season grand final. ‘‘Coburg won it last year and they beat us in the pre-season so they are dangerous on their day,’’ Klaman said. The Devils men’s team was pipped 73-70 by the Eltham Wildcats on their home court in the men’s championship.

All over at first change WERRIBEE Districts barely gave a yelp in a 50-point loss to Ajax in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier B at Gary Smorgon Oval on Saturday. The Tigers were staring down the barrel at quarter-time, goalless and trailing by 41 points. They limited the damage in the last three quarters through some good play from Wayne Pelar, Adam Alifraco and Chris Molivas, but their fate was already determined. Montebruno on fire again

Jets fight hard to stay unbeaten

TYREN Montebruno is red hot in front of goals for Werribee Centrals in the early rounds of the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. Montebruno booted seven goals in the Centurions one-sided 96-point win over the Belmont Lions to take his season tally to 16 in three games. The Centurions were eager to build on the good form they showed in the second round, but had to do it without injured ruckman Stephen Morgan, leaving the big-man duties to rest solely on the shoulders of Nathan Lovell. Lovell answered the call of coach Luke Phipps, producing a standout performance in the middle and offering first use to the running brigade. The Centurions banged on six goals to one in the first term and stretched their lead to nine goals by half-time. There was no stopping them from registering back to back wins with Michael Knight, Brad McNicol and Matthew Taylor featuring prominently. The Centurions return home to Galvin Park on Saturday for a bout with ladder leader Bell Post Hill, the only remaining undefeated team in the top flight. — Lance Jenkinson

POINT Cook’s defence was broken down by the ‘one trick show’ of Lara in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 5 west. The Jets returned with a 3-3 draw to keep their record unblemished after three games. They are one of four teams with seven points and a share of top spot in the standings. Jets coach Geoff Gillard was not happy with his team’s defensive approach on Saturday, which afforded the dangerous Lara strikers the chance to get in behind the last line and into dangerous positions because of the overcommitting of his defenders. ‘‘Our back four struggled with the two quick guys they had up front,’’ Gillard said. ‘‘We committed a lot of the time to try and win the ball when we didn’t need to.

BY LANCE JENKINSON

‘‘Sometimes to win the ball, you don’t have to tackle the player, you’ve got to coral them into a position that gives you an advantage and at times we sort of over-committed and it played into their hands, where they were able to knock the ball past and use their speed to get in behind us. ‘‘Unfortunately, they scored twice from that and the third one was from a penalty.’’ The Jets were quickly trailing 3-1 with goal machine Joe Spiteri their goalscorer in that period. The game changed its complexion 20 seconds before the half-time break when Emilio Lucanera rose to power the ball home with the head from a corner. ‘‘That was really important for us,’’ Gillard said. The momentum carried over to the second half, the Jets produing waves of attack in the second half.

Second half earns points WERRIBEE City had its fair share of headaches early in a 2-1 win over North Geelong Warriors in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at a redeveloped Galvin Park on Sunday. The Warriors came to play, using their pace in the midfield to terrorise the Bees defence and made it count with a 10th-minute goal to Stjepan Trbuhovic. The Bees seemed jolted by the goal and struggled to get a foothold in the game until the mercy of the half-time break. The Nino Ragusa-coached Bees came out a different-looking team in the second half and finally restored parity in the 61st minute after a powerful shot from Leigh Minopoulos. The Bees wanted all three points at home and pressed forward in the late stages. They got their rewards for taking the game on when Anthony Ragusa found Minopoulos in a wide position, who pinpointed a cross to an unmarked Daniel Sweeney, who made no mistake with his shot on goal. The Bees have put together back-to-back wins to sit fifth. They will feature in Monday night football against FC Bulleen Lions at the Veneto Club in Bulleen in the fourth round. In the men’s state league 4 west, Hoppers Crossing is licking its wounds after a 4-0 battering at the hands of the Maribyrnong Greens. The pressure is mounting on the Reds, who are pointless after three rounds.

GDFL Werribee Centrals 21.19 (145) d Belmont 7.7 (49). Werribee Centrals: Goals: T Montebruno 7, D Hall, M Taylor 4, D Todaro 2, D Brierty, R Quarrier, M Cassidy C Koutzamanis. Best: T Montebruno, N Lovell, M Cassidy, B McNicol, D Hall, M Walson.

Slow-starting Centrals prevail WERRIBEE Centrals are proving a hard nut to crack in the Geelong and District Netball League A grade. The Centurions were undermanned, but still found a way to beat the always-competitive Belmont Lions 44-24 on Saturday. Mid-counter Hailey Sildatke was dominant for the Centurions, while defender Noni McClure and goaler Ellie Tubbs were not far behind. Tubbs scored 27 goals and worked in tandem with Mickayla Ward, who landed 17. The Centurions struggled to find their feet early in the contest, making a slow start to a physical encounter. Positional changes in the mid court and some half-time directions allowed the Centurions to start the second half in a fresh frame of mind. They were much better in the last half, linking well in the mid court, showing tremendous determination on the defence to create turnovers and giving the goalers much better service. A grade: Belmont Lions 24 Werribee Centrals 44

Spiteri would eventually get the Jets on level terms with a glancing header on 70 minutes. The former Socceroo, who has proven impossible to stop at this level, peppered the Lara goal, only to be denied by some nifty goalkeeping. ‘‘Their keeper pulled off what I class as two brilliant saves from his shots,’’ Gillard said. ‘‘Any other day of the week, they would’ve gone in.’’ Lucanera was the Jets best in the middle of the park, winning his personal battle and setting most of the attacking play. Jamie Early produced a number of quality crosses from the right side of midfield. Spiteri’s two goals gives him seven for the campaign. The Jets will host Altona North in an all-west affair on Saturday at Saltwater Reserve.
