FORSYTH ROAD DANGER could linger for A DECADE HOPPERS CROSSING
Funding to improve a dangerous Wyndham intersection could be up to 10 years away, with VicRoads conceding future road projects will have to compete with the east-west link for state government funding. Documents obtained under freedom of information show VicRoads has developed a $10.5 million plan to improve safety at the intersection of Old Geelong and Forsyth roads in Hoppers Crossing, but funding limitations mean it will proceed with a short-term solution.
The intersection was the scene of six casualty crashes from 2006-11 and is Wyndham’s busiest road. Businesses and Truganina South Primary School have been calling for the intersection to be made safer, warning the number of accidents there was on the rise. In November, VicRoads will begin work on an $880,000 project to install traffic lights, street lights and safety barriers. But FOI documents reveal that VicRoads believes the best way to improve safety at the intersection is to realign Old Geelong Road to form a conventional cross-intersection
with Forsyth Road. The documents state the proposal will have to compete with other state road projects for funding. Altona Labor MP Jill Hennessy said the government’s commitment to the east-west link meant the majority of road funding for the next five to 10 years would be spent on that project, with other projects having to wait. “The Napthine government’s decision to put all of its transport eggs in one basket . . . means that important local road projects like the Forsyth/Old Geelong road intersection will be placed on the

A ferry service could be running between Avalon Airport and Melbourne’s southern suburbs within the next few years. Lyons Capital, the company behind Werribee South’s Wyndham Harbour development, is in talks with Avalon Airport about a ferry service from the Mornington Peninsula to Avalon. Lyons is already working with the state government to develop a ferry from Werribee South to the city. Spokesman Greg Miller said planning for an Avalon ferry was in the preliminary stages, but it could be part of a wider network of ferry services. It would need state government approval. Mr Miller said Lyons was confident people would catch a ferry to Avalon because it would be an attractive alternative to Melbourne’s congested roads. “Increasing access to an airport via Port Phillip Bay becomes an obvious choice for those people living in the southern suburbs.” \ LL

Wyndham mayor Heather Marcus said while the council supported the western end of the east-west link being built as a priority, the municipality’s roads were also in need of funding. “Our current road infrastructure is inadequate and we are the fastest-growing municipality in Victoria.’’ Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the government would increase its spending on road safety projects to $1 billion over 10 years. \ LAURA LITTLE

five deaths after aged care move WERRIBEE
SCHOOLGIRL’S FIRST AN AFL ‘THRILL’ Point Cook schoolgirl Soreti Jibrael (pictured) has made history as the first umpire to wear a hijab on an elite AFL ground. The 13-year-old said she was nervous when she stepped on to Etihad Stadium to umpire an Auskick match on August 2. “It was nerve-racking and a thrill,” she said. The Hoppers Crossing resident and Cats fan attends Point Cook P-9 College, where 25 students are part of AFL Victoria’s basic umpiring course, which is designed to promote leadership, decision-making and the role of umpires to a new generation. Assistant principal Frank Vetere said the school had been surprised at the publicity surrounding Soreti’s debut “because multiculturalism is something we take for granted”. \ NT
Five former residents of a Werribee nursing home have died since moving to a new aged-care centre to allow a multimillion-dollar redevelopment to get under way. Thirty residents of Wyndham Lodge were last month asked to move to other nursing homes to allow Baptcare to start building a multi-storey development on the site. Management assured families the transition from nursing home to nursing home was much easier than the move from independent living to a nursing home. Baptcare this week said the deaths might not be linked to the move. Some families fear the transition has been too stressful. Marie, who did not want her surname printed, said her dad had lost five friends in the past four weeks. “The move has been stressful for him,’’ Marie said. ‘‘He knew the routine at Wyndham Lodge and that’s what it’s all about with older people.” Baptcare aged-care operations general manager Michael Wilson said winter brought a higher mortality rate than other seasons. \ LL
PRIVATISATION WORRIES SURROUND SOUTH STONE LODGE AGED CARE
Aged-care advocates fear Wyndham’s only government-owned nursing home could be sold off under plans to privatise hundreds of aged-care beds, fanning concerns of nursing job cuts and fee hikes for residents. They say elderly western suburbs residents may be hardest hit under the state government’s privatisation plans. Opposition MPs toured several government-owned nursing homes, including Werribee’s South Stone Lodge,
last Wednesday, launching a petition urging nurse-to-patient ratios that apply in state-run Premier Denis Napthine to stop shrinking the facilities. public aged-care sector. Tarneit MP Labor MP Tim Pallas accused the government of “selling off the care of our seniors to the highest bidder” despite an ageing population. “I am very concerned that South Stone Lodge will be next,’’ he said. Government spokeswoman Rachel White said no decisions had yet been made on which sites would be sold, but there would be no loss of aged-care places through any transfers. \ NT and LL

For the past year, the union has been calling on the Napthine government to improve ambulance resources, reduce transfer times and give them a 30 per cent rise so their pay is in line with paramedics in other states. Mr Hill seized on comments by Health Minister David Davis claiming 18 minutes was a “normal” cardiac arrest response time. “No one in the health profession would say that’s acceptable,” Mr Hill said. I recently read an excellent article that highlighted the frustration we “rank and file” feel towards politicians who don’t listen. There has always been loud and energetic public debate around issues such as the east-west link, Port Phillip Bay dredging and the carbon tax. At a local level, Wyndham residents speak of residential overdevelopment and the snail’s pace at which roads, public transport and infrastructure progress. It sometimes seems like some of our local councillors have gone AWOL since being elected in October last year, only popping up in the local papers when it suits. However, kudos must go to council’s community development team, and our councillors, for developing the ‘‘Wyndham Exchange’’. A series of listening posts will be set up across the municipality, giving ratepayers direct access to those we voted for. It’s a great opportunity for any of us who regularly have something to say about the actions of our council. High on the agenda, I suspect, will be the overcrowding of our suburbs and roads, the disgusting tip mountain, sports facilities and the bad behaviour of local hoons. Perhaps the issue of ‘‘missing in action’’ councillors will be raised, along with questions on what they’ve done in the past 10 months to represent their wards. Whatever the issue, question, comment or compliment, the Wyndham Exchange is a chance for everyone to get their message to those who matter. Hopefully, they’ll be ready to listen. The first Wyndham Exchange is from 11am to 1pm on Saturday at Station Place, Werribee. \ EMMA SUTCLIFFE Emma Sutcliffe is a freelance writer

Premier Denis Napthine made a back-door getaway to avoid speaking with paramedics gathered outside a Werribee function, angering the ambulance union which says he views them as “just bums on a seat” whose opinions don’t matter. Last Thursday, 12 western suburbs paramedics gathered outside Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury’s Watton Street office, which was being officially opened by Dr Napthine. They had hoped to speak to the premier about response times. But Dr Napthine arrived and left through a back door, avoiding the paramedics. Werribee paramedic Danny Hill said the group was “not there to chant, harass or ambush” anyone. “For him to duck out the back because he doesn’t want to talk to a small group of paramedics, it makes you wonder how he’s in his job.’’ Dr Napthine’s spokesman Mark Lee said the premier did not want to participate in a ‘‘union media stunt’’ but was happy to have a private and productive meeting with paramedics. \ LL and NT

police hunt hold-up pair Two masked men are being hunted by police following an early-morning hold-up at a Tarneit fast-food shop. A man, 25, was making a delivery to a KFC store on the corner of Derrimut and Sayers roads when he was confronted by the masked men just before 4.30am Monday. Detectives believe one of the men had a gun. The delivery-truck driver had his hands tied and was forced back into the shop. Police said the offenders stole cash before leaving the shop. The delivery man managed to free himself a short time later and called police. He was not injured. The armed robbery comes just two weeks after a man was robbed at knifepoint in Werribee South. A Werribee man, 31, had his wallet stolen by a man holding a knife while walking along Beach Road on July 27. directed, unlicensed driving and receiving property stolen outside of NSW. No reasons were given for Gottschalk’s not-guilty pleas and he did not apply for bail. Mr Hunt said a “green army” of 15,000 young people to tackle environmental projects would be a cornerstone of a Coalition government’s climate policy. \ fill up tins to help the kids APCO independent service stations are helping out with the Cops ‘N’ Kids program. What’s your favourite place to grab a coffee and a bite to eat? I go to Chatterbox Cafe on Watton Street for my skinny cap and Hoppers Junctions Cafe on Old Geelong Road for a bite to eat for breakfast. I love their ham, cheese and tomato toasties. For dinner, the family goes to Curry Guru for a beef or lamb korma or to Baffetti Ristorante E’Bar– both of them on Watton Street. We spend a lot of time on that street. What do you do in your down time? I train at In-Balance Fitness quite a bit, but I do enjoy going to Fifth Element Day Spa on the weekend when I don’t have to train. Most people wouldn’t think so, but for me getting a remedial tissue massage is a great way to relax after a long week.
“we need more places to sit and relax”
What would you change in your neighbourhood? Personally, I think the area could do with more recreation areas. I think we need more places to sit and relax outside. I love my area, but we do have an awful lot of footy ovals.
Where do you go to buy your threads? Rebel Sport at Werribee Plaza seems to be where I spend most of my time buying clothes.
Funniest moment while out and about? My family used to go down to the Werribee River, since it’s only a short walk from our house. The river had a fair bit of algae on it but my older brother Max, who was seven, thought it was grass so he just kept walking ... he got completely soaked. \

Premier Denis Napthine has used the opening of a $30 million privately funded medical centre in Werribee to spruik his government’s commitment to the East Werribee Employment Precinct. Dr Napthine (pictured) opened the Wyndham Private Medical Centre on Thursday during a Werribee visit that included the opening of Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury’s new electorate office. The medical centre, which opened its doors last May, offers Wyndham residents improved
access to GPs, dentists and specialist services including pathology and IVF. Dr Napthine said Wyndham Private would become part of a new medical precinct including Wyndham Clinic and Day Surgery, an expanded mental health facility at Werribee Mercy Hospital and the proposed St Vincents Private Hospital. “The centre will be a part of Melbourne’s new west – a mixed-use precinct accommodating more than 50,000 new jobs, 7000 new dwellings and a residential population of approximately 15,500 people.” \ LL

onia Todman is unequivocal. “You won’t find a skerrick of raffia in my house,” she declares. Nor, for that matter, a hessian mouse or anything that remotely resembles a sugar-stiffened crocheted swan. If that were not surprising, her next statement is frankly shocking. “I don’t particularly like craft,” Todman says. As her good friend and fellow former Channel 10 host Rove McManus might ask: “What the ...?” This from the woman who once coolly demonstrated on national television how to decoupage a rock? “What can I say ... I was compelled,” she laughs. “All I would ever take responsibility for was the method. I gave people the method. Taste is another matter altogether.” Here at Highbank – the 160-year-old bluestone homestead she lovingly restored with third husband Michael Dowding – good taste is redolent right down to the bowl of freshly picked quinces perfuming the air under the heat of the photographer’s lights. On one wall hangs the rich scroll of an ancestor painting brought home from one of her trips to China. On the sideboard, a magpie’s nest blown from a tree has been raised to art. “I like to live among things that mean something to me, not just because they are fashionable or the right colour,” Todman says. At 65 she is trim, her eyes bright with merriment and the voice as pleasantly modulated as ever. But as she sits in the lounge of her home on the outskirts of Kyneton, it’s hard to fathom that in her Channel 10 heyday Todman boasted a bigger mailbag than then Neighbours stars Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan put together. She had two full-time mail openers to handle requests generated from Good Morning Australia and Healthy, Wealthy and Wise, once attracting more than 60,000 stamped self-addressed envelopes for a fact sheet on how to use PVA glue to cover wooden boxes with fabric. There was hardly a segment that didn’t benefit from Todman’s appearance and she was game for anything. “For the international kite flying convention at Sale, they had me flying kites in a howling gale and I actually left the ground at one stage, being carried aloft by a huge Chinese box kite. While doing a story in Sydney Harbour about The Rocks area I took to a small rowboat, but no one had anticipated the strong outgoing tide and I was soon heading for the main ferry routes in and out of Circular Quay and had to be rescued.” Appreciating her comedic talent, Rove worked her into his show with regular “Tonia Todman sightings”. She had a cult following among the gay community
Making it, her way Australia’s queen of craft deconstructs some myths about the “dreaded decoupage”, writes Sarah Harris
who, in one Sydney Mardi Gras, paid her the ultimate tribute with a Tonia Todman float. Not altogether what was expected of a Tamworth farmer’s wife. “I had been brought up to be a good wife and mother. I was never expected to be a breadwinner and yet I have always worked,” Todman reveals. She started sewing after the drought of the late ’60s put paid to her husband Tony’s ambitions of following his parents onto the land. “He needed to go back to university, and to pay the fees I started sewing.” Todman started working for Vogue Patterns, first making up samples, then as a demonstrator, and she eventually became editor of Mode Made magazine for Kerry Packer. “The closest I usually got to him was when I used to park my car beside his in the basement and he had two rottweilers in the back seat of his BMW. It was terrifying if you accidentally happened to brush the car.” She was already 40 when a Channel 10 programming director asked if she could demonstrate some Mode Made projects on television. It wasn’t her first time on TV. Tonia Barker was a student at the Newcastle

Church of England Girls’ Grammar School when she audaciously auditioned for the infant NBN network. “My headmistress thought I was going to hell,” Todman recalls. “I wanted to be a journalist and a newsreader. My mother made me this wonderful dress of chartreuse peau de soie silk with a belled skirt and satin shoes dyed to match, and a little floral jacket.” She didn’t get the gig but landed a season as a presenter on Swallows Juniors – forerunner to Young Talent Time. After school she attended shorthand classes in Sydney, but the script was written. She married Tony – her boyfriend of four years – quite oblivious to the young man who sat behind her in that class who still recalls the tortoiseshell clasp at the nape of her neck. He may have waited more than 35 years, but eventually Michael Dowding got the girl. By then Todman’s sons Angus and Simon had grown and she had put a short-lived second marriage full of “mental anguish” behind her. But now, running her cookery school and B&B, Todman is in a very good place, away from the glare of television which, when it ended, was brutal. “Twenty
years and it was all over in five minutes. As I was leaving Channel 10 for the last time I was encouraged to take the large photo of me that had always been on the wall of the green room. This I did, but as I drove out of the car park I got a call asking for the frame to be returned.” She still has her share of public exposure with the steady stream of B&B guests and students. “There are people out there who still remind me about Wreaths and Garlands and other books [there are 28] I wrote 20 years ago. I can’t escape it – I think it will be with me until I die. I think someone will crochet my headstone.” On the way out we pass a collection of birds’ nests salvaged by Todman. “I think they are miracles. No one teaches them how to do it. There is no book,” she says. I raise an eyebrow, imagining the possible title. “No way,” she laughs. “Absolutely no way.” \ » www.toniatodman.com

Mayoral Column Last Thursday, I was delighted to welcome the Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine to Wyndham for the opening of the $30 million Wyndham Private Medical Centre to the medical services available to our growing community. The Wyndham Private Medical Centre will be part of a health precinct which will include the soon to be completed Wyndham Clinic and Day Surgery and the proposed St Vincent’s Private Hospital. Located in Hoppers Lane, opposite Werribee Mercy Hospital, and within the East Werribee Employment Precinct, the centre specialists and a GP clinic. This means many Wyndham residents will no longer have to travel into Melbourne to access important medical specialist services. It comes on top of the State Government’s announcement of $34 million in this year’s State Budget for a new mental health unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is another important investment in the health of our City. The opening of Wyndham Private Medical Centre East Werribee Employment Precinct, which will eventually accommodate more than 50,000 new jobs, 7,000 new dwellings, and 15,500 people. ’m a firm believer in walking on a full stomach. Devouring a farmer’s breakfast in front of a log fire is a sure-fire way to sustain the body for a big day hiking. It’s 7.30am and we’re in the township of Woodend, an hour north of Melbourne, looking up at the Macedon Ranges from a family-owned coffee shop. We’re savouring an open fire and hot coffee before stepping out into the bracing cold to begin our 30-kilometre-plus hike up and around Mount Macedon. The car thermometer says it’s two degrees outside and there isn’t a cloud in the sky. The mountain looks like something out of a J.R.R. Tolkien novel. It juts out from behind the maroon-coloured, corrugated-iron rooftops, shrouded by low clouds with a steely green hue. The circuit hike around Mount Macedon takes six hours if you are relatively fit, but allow at least eight hours in case you lose track of time at one of the many lookout points. If you have spare time, take 20 minutes to explore Hanging Rock and its maze-like rock formation. It will cost you $10 at the car park. You can step on to the Macedon walking track from any of the six points where it intersects with the road, or at any of the picnic grounds. Overall, you will ascend to about 1000 metres and drop to as low as 580 metres. We start at the northern-most tip of the walk, Camels Hump, where there is a car park and an extra 10-minute walk to the summit with views of Hanging Rock. Camels Hump is well-known for rock climbing and the lookout is a great spectator spot. As you make your way around the Mount Macedon circuit, you quickly realise how non-strenuous it is to explore the terrain. The trail is one of the most forgiving, well-maintained

It’s not a new fire levy, it’s a fairer fire levy. On 1 July 2013, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the Victorian Government is replacing the old fire services levy with a fairer system. Rather than being added to insurance premiums, the levy will now be collected with council rates. This means all property owners contribute a fair share to the Country Fire Authority or the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The levy is a fixed charge of $100 for residential properties and $200 for non-residential properties, plus a variable charge based on the property’s capital improved value. All funds will go towards supporting Victoria’s fire services. GST and stamp duty charged on the old levy have been removed and, for the first time, eligible pensioners and veterans will receive a $50 concession. These reforms will save households and business around $100 million a year. F•S•A/DPC0018

and defined in Victoria. You could probably manage it in a good pair of runners. That said, there are sharp ascents and strenuous points along the way. The Mount Towrong trail, which runs off Anzac Road, and the lead-up to the War Memorial Cross are steep and require a few breathers. Between Anzac Road and the trail to the Memorial Cross, the trail is the road. Admittedly, whenever you hike on a road, you feel a little cheated. Thankfully, the road guides you through the mansion-lined streets of the township of Mount Macedon to the local pub, which makes the perfect halfway point. The Mount Macedon Hotel was recently renovated and it’s still everything you would imagine it to be: mulled wine by the glass, pot pie, an on a open fireplace. clear day There is a sign above the bar that you can see reads “Home of the Mount Macedon Yacht Club”. When we ask about it, the port phillip bartender laughs; “There’s no club, mate. bay But there is a muddy pond out the back if you are so inclined.” Points of interest along the trail include the 21-metre-tall War Memorial Cross from where, on a clear day, you can see Melbourne’s skyline and Port Phillip Bay. In summer Mount Macedon can be very dry, although much of the beauty of this place depends on the woolly weather and the moisture of the rainforest. Towering trees hollowed out by fire and termites, fields of fluorescent green ferns, the ground carpeted by fallen leaves and 10-metre-long strings of bark hanging from huge eucalypts make it an eerily peaceful walk below the canopy. When you finally emerge from the damp shade, there is always a good rock to sit on with a great view. This is when you pull out the snack bars and the camera. \ The war memorial cross firstname.lastname@example.org
footwear \ The trail is well kept and well worn but there are steep climbs and descents. You can do this walk in a good pair of runners but if you’re serious about doing it right, wear sturdier shoes.

Motoring \ rod easdown navigates the value of optional extras
ou can’t argue about the price of the reborn Fiat Punto, what I’m questioning is the price of the optional navigation. Why would I buy a TomTom from Fiat for $595 when I can buy one at retail for $200? Fiat’s TomTom has an 11-centimetre screen and is on a removable shaft that clicks into the dash. A TomTom from the stores has a 15-centimentre screen and comes with a windscreen mount. The factory unit integrates with the car’s electronics through the dash shaft, so there’s no cord hanging down to a power outlet and the instructions are routed through the car’s audio system. The store-bought unit, apart from being one-third the price, gets free mapping updates all its life. It’s an easy choice but I felt a bit uncomfortable asking the folk at Fiat such a rude question and I feel a bit mean writing about it now, because overall they’re doing the right thing. Under the old importer, Puntos cost a couple of grand more than they do now and had less equipment. Sales were never more than modest and the model quietly slipped off the market in 2010. Now it’s back with a factory-owned subsidiary doing the importing and, at $18,000, it’s a definite proposition among small four-doors. Fiat has done the same thing with the cute little 500, which used to be into the 20s but now starts at $14,000. So the cars haven’t changed much but the margins certainly have. I guess they have

to make money somewhere and optional equipment has always been a good earner. For many years the gold mine was optional CD players. These cost less to build than the cassette decks that were standard equipment, they were more compact and lighter as well. Saving weight, even just a few grams, is the car maker’s holy grail. Yet CD players cost hundreds of dollars extra, even when most car buyers hadn’t used a cassette for years. Air-conditioning was another. The only place buyers generally didn’t order optional air was Tasmania. It was such a universal purchase that when a buyer didn’t want it a dealership could face a major headache, having to remove a system that had either been fitted in pre-delivery as a matter of course or even built-in at the factory. Then the resultant holes then had to be rust-proofed. That’s why it took so long to get standard CD players and air-conditioning – they were making great money as options. You have to wonder, also, about the additional charge for metallic paint, especially when sometimes it applies to every colour except white.

TIGERS’ LOSING SEASON has AN UPBEAT LOOK VAFA
You have to admire Werribee Districts’ refusal to wave the white flag in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier B. Sure, it has been a rough ride this season, brought about by youthfulness in a big boys’ division. Yes, the club is consigned to relegation, and maybe even the wooden spoon. But one thing you will always find in a Kirk Norton side is improvement, with heavy losses early in the season having been replaced by ultra-competitive efforts at the back end. On Saturday, the Tigers got the rewards for persistence with a 12-point upset win over Old Haileybury, away at Princes Park in Caulfield. Trailing by 10 points at three-quarter time, the Tigers pounced on their second victory of the season with a breathtaking four-goals-to-one last term. Ryan Harrington was the star with six goals, while Bol Kolang, captain Matthew Dean and three-goal forward Aaron Taylor were the other standouts. The Tigers are bound for the third tier next season, but they will be cooking up a finals-disrupting recipe for Old Brighton on Saturday. In division 3, Old Westbourne moved closer to a winless season with a 134-point loss to La Trobe University. \ LJ

falcons fail to inspire WRFL
Wyndhamvale has failed to capture the imagination of pundits like it had in previous Western Region Football League division 2 finals series. The Falcons have been a “Jekyll and Hyde” prospect in the words of coach Luke Dennerley, with inconsistency costing them a shot at a double chance. Let’s face it, their shock 110-point round 16 loss to Parkside did little to seduce the tipsters. But other factors are also in play as reasons for the Falcons up-and-down season, having the rough end of the stick in a compromised draw and accommodating a larger than normal turnover of players for a club that has been so settled in Dennerley’s four-year reign. While the Falcons have been a permanent fixture in the finals and will enter Sunday’s elimination final with Sunshine Heights as favourites on the back of a 14-4 season, Dennerley warned against using past finals experience as a form guide. “It’s been a generational shift for us, we’ve changed the list a bit and it’s taken a bit of adjusting,” he told the Weekly. “Our senior team is markedly different this year, and I can’t underline that enough. “If you dish out the stuff in terms of list and coaching, you’re going to get the same results. “This is my fourth year and we’ve looked at things a bit differently, our game style has evolved and they’ve done really well to grab a hold of it, but that probably won’t come to full fruition for another season.” The Falcons know their best football can

push them into September, but seldom have they shown it. For a quarter here and a half there, the Falcons are the genuine article, but even Dennerley is frustrated by the inconsistency brought about by the new-look squad and a redefined game plan. “It’s about stringing them together in the one game,” he said. “Our best football for long enough is good enough to not only rattle the cage but to beat those top sides. ‘‘I need to caution that comment in that we have been in a position in the last couple of weeks to play consistent footy and we’ve taken the foot off the gas, so I’m hoping the fellas have a steely resolve to bring the intensity for 120 minutes.” The Falcons should get some love from the tippers in the do-or-die final against Sunshine Heights at Chirnside Park on Sunday, despite first-choice ruckman Nathan Reschke and star recruit Paul O’Shea set to miss with injury. “Sunny Heights is a particularly proud footy club and I rate their hardness around the footy,” Dennerley said. “If you’re not willing to compete for four quarters against these blokes, you’ll cop your right whack. “The expectation now is that we bring our season-best footy.” Parkside will meet new boys Manor Lakes in the qualifying final at Chirnside Park on Saturday. In division 1, Hoppers Crossing run away with a 66-point win over North Footscray at Hansen Reserve. Terry Knight booted eight goals for the Warriors, while Aaron Ramsay was best on ground. \ Lj
briefs Football Werribee Centrals put their Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup finals spot at risk with a shock one-point loss to lowly Inverleigh away on Saturday. The Centurions could have secured a top-five finish, but it will now come down to the last round, where they can shore up their position with a win over Corio at Galvin Park on Saturday. If they don’t take care of their own business, the fourth-placed Centurions can still make the finals, but only if one of Geelong West or Winchelsea lose in round 18. \
Women’s football Wyndhamvale has suffered a heartbreaking six-point loss to Deer Park in the Victorian Women’s Football League north-west division 2 preliminary final at Highgate Reserve. The Falcons seemingly had control of the game at three quarter time, leading by 12 points on the back of 10 scoring shots to three and with Anna Harrington playing a starring role. But Deer Park came back strongly in the last quarter to overrun the gallant Falcons and move into the grand final, where Pascoe Vale awaits. \
Soccer Werribee City lost ground in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 title race with a 1-0 loss to Heidelberg United, one of the teams it is jostling with for the top ranking. City has tumbled to third and is now five points behind ladder-leader United with five games remaining. In other results, Hoppers Crossing was edged out 2-1 by Corio in state league 4, while Jamie Early scored a double for Point Cook in a 4-0 drubbing of Balmoral in state league 5. \
Netball Werribee Centrals are one win away from an undefeated season in the Geelong and District Netball League A-grade. The Centurions carved up Inverleigh 58-33 in a one-sided affair on the road on Saturday. Eleanor Tubbs shot 43 goals to underline her status as the in-form goaler in the competition. The Centurions will achieve a flawless regular season if they can beat third-last Corio on Saturday. \

jets duo’s hard work rewarded Football
Western Jets rising stars Duom Dawam and Liam Duggan have retained their places in the elite AIS-AFL Academy squad for 2013-14. Dawam, a late blooming Sudanese-born ruckman, and Duggan, a running defender, will move up to a level-two scholarship as top-age players. Jets coach Torin Baker told the Weekly that earning an elevation was not a fait accompli. “They do review the squad and make add-ons or deletions,” he said. “The boys have to warrant getting a second year and both of them have got a second year. “It’s their application and the way they’ve gone about it, it’s a real reward for that.” Dawam will understandably draw comparisons with North Melbourne big man Majak Daw. Both have followed similar football paths, born in Sudan, discovering the game upon arrival in Melbourne and coming through the ranks at the Wyndhamvale Juniors. Like Daw, Dawam has an insatiable appetite to learn more about a game he only started playing as a teenager. “He’s only been playing football the past four years,” Baker said. “For him to do what
he’s done in that short amount of time is really quite remarkable when you think about it. No doubt he’s got some improving to do, but he’s shown a willingness to learn.” Dawam is 200cm and gifted athletically, making him a hard match-up in the height. But it is below the knees and in the second efforts that makes him stand out among the other ruckman in the TAC Cup. “He’s a real natural in his second and third efforts at the contest,” Baker said. “He’ll get on the ground and lay tackles and try and win ground balls. For a ruckman to do that, it’s really good to see.” Duggan has been mainly used in a defensive role this season, but has shown his ability when thrown into the midfield mix. Slight in stature but brave in the contest, when he finds space, he is an elite ball user. “He’s a real class player,” Baker said. “He’s got some body development to do, but he’s still a really good contested ball winner, even though he’s got a slight body.” Last weekend was a development week for TAC Cup teams. The Western Jets returned to the heat of battle against Bendigo Pioneers away on Saturday to defend their top four berth. \ Lj
clean sweep stuns devils
tigers’ win fails to impress coach
Welcome to the brutal nature of playoff basketball, Werribee Devils. The Devils got schooled in a 2-0 best-of-three series whitewash by the intimidating Keilor Thunder in the Big V basketball women’s division 2 semi finals. Returning home after blowing a big lead in game one, the Devils failed to match it for intensity, physicality and endurance in a 73-53 game-two loss at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night. Devils coach Lloyd Klaman told the Weekly the playoffs can be unforgiving for a side bereft of finals experience. “We weren’t at our best and you want to be at your best in the finals,” he said. “Take nothing away from Keilor, they were rough and tough and played playoff basketball. “They’re probably a bit older and more match hardened than we are and when you get to the finals, the refs tend to let you play a bit more physical and it really disrupted us. “We just got a bit tired - their physicality wore us down.” The Devils went into the series as warm favourites having finished on top of the ladder with just two losses in the regular season. The Thunder is no stranger to the playoffs, having won their most recent title two seasons ago. They strengthened in the off-season, picking up veteran centre Jodi Impey from the Whittlesea Stallions. Impey was an unstoppable force in game two with 22 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. She gave a tell-tale sign that it would be a long night for the Devils when she drained three opening-quarter three-pointers. “You’d look at her and you’d think she’d be a low-post player, but she’s probably their best perimeter player,” Klaman said. “She can flat-out play.” Trailing by 12 at quarter time, the Devils would get hot in the second period on the back of the brilliance of Lisa Troyahn (19 points and 11 rebounds) and Elisha Burnette (15 points). They cut the deficit to one by half time

and blew a chance to take the lead midway through the third. The Thunder offered no second invitation, going on a 14-4 run to round out the third and lead by 11. The visitors closed out the game in the fourth. Understandably, the Devils were hurting post game, but Klaman reminded the team of how far they have come, from also-rans to the minor premiers in the space of 12 months.
“It was all pretty raw in the locker room afterwards,” he said. “I said to them that we’re all disappointed about the result, but you’ve got to be happy with the year that we’ve had and where we’ve come from. “We had a couple of hiccups, but all in all it’s been a pretty good year for the club and it’s kind of brought Werribee [women’s] basketball back to where it was.” \ Lance Jenkinson email@example.com
klaman identifies unfinished business at werribee Basketball
Lloyd Klaman has some unfinished business with the Werribee Devils. The American-born coach wants to lead the Devils women’s team into 2014 after taking them to the Big V women’s division 2 playoffs in his first season. “We haven’t formalised anything yet, but I would like to come back,” Klaman told the Weekly. It promises to be an exciting 12 months for the Devils. They are preparing a submission
to be promoted to division 1 on the back of their minor premiership. There are also plans to get a women’s youth league team off the ground to cater for their growing number of talented teens. Should the Devils get the green light for an elevation to the second tier, and if Klaman is reappointed, he has vowed to fast-track the young team’s development with a punishing pre-season program to get them up to the required standard for the level. “If I’m involved next year, we’ll probably only take five weeks off and get started again,”
he said. “We want to get these kids bigger, stronger and quicker, and we’ll do a lot of work in the weight room and on the running track. We’re going to have to compete with bigger bodies if we’re in division 1.” Meanwhile, it was a night of upsets at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre. Not only did Klaman’s top-ranked women’s division 2 team suffer a shock loss to fourth seed Keilor in a series sweep, the previously unbeaten Devils youth league 1 men’s team was upset 70-61 by the Keilor Thunder in a grand-final boilover. \ LJ
Joshua Pace was the driving force behind Werribee’s 3-1 disposal of cellar dweller Monash University in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1 on Saturday. Pace assisted on two goals and was impossible to curtail in the middle en route to a best-afield performance. Tigers coach Cam Whyatt told the Weekly that Pace was unlucky not to have added to his 10 goals for the season. “He was the one that basically dribbled the ball to set up both of the opening two goals,” Whyatt said. “The first one, he intercepted the ball from the defensive 25, eliminated five or six defenders and put the ball goalward. “One of the other boys [Peter Nalder] touched it on the line, which Pacey was a bit non-pleased about.” Nalder had the first goal set up on a platter. Then Pace served up the final pass for Darren Wale to score. The third goal, scored from a penalty corner by Sean Gardner, fittingly came through an assist from Joshua McDonald. McDonald has formed a dynamic duo with Pace since the mid-season break. Known for his run-with roles in the past, McDonald has been off the leash in recent weeks and relishing the freedom. “Normally his job is to mark the oppositions attacking forward,” Whyatt said. “We changed that in the last few weeks where we’ve released him to the midfield so he can push up and overlap and give us some drive from defence, which he’s done really well. “He played one of the best games he’s played all year.” Gardner was a hard worker in attack, while Sam Huxtable offered the counter-punch from defence. The Tigers were content to claim the victory, taking them to within four points of the top four. By no means was Whyatt happy with the winning margin. “It was a good result, but they were sitting on the bottom of the table, so it should’ve been a lot better,” he said. “We didn’t quite make the most of our opportunities. “We had all of the attack and should’ve score a heck of a lot more goals, to be honest.” The Tigers face Yarra Valley at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in the first of three do-or-die games in their chase for a finals berth. \ LJ

A Werribee Tigers promotion
The West Wing One of the great traditions of our game is the father son rule. As the father of 4 football mad Bulldog supporters it is a rule that I personally love. To see Mitch Wallis wearing the red, white and blue that his father Steve -a very close friend and mentor for me-wore, is just brilliant. This year Werribee has found itself in a unique position with Luke McDonald being groomed for his football future via the club his father Donald famously steered to its one and only senior premiership. Luke is an emerging talent and is almost certain to go to the Kangaroos under the father son rule.
big win caps off tigers’ day VFL
SW: Congratulations on being invited to the National Draft Combine. LMcD: Thanks for that. I was rapt to be invited along with Benny Brown from the mighty Bees. SW: How have you juggled all your commitments this year? LMcD: It has been a pretty big year for me. I am studying full time at Melbourne Universiity, which is pretty full on. It has been a good year playing at Vic Metro, and at Werribee, getting that senior experience under my belt and also training one day a week down at North Melbourne, just seeing how they go about it. SW: Playing against men, and a lot of them AFL listed men, must be an advantage for you come the draft? LMcD: I played in the TAC Cup last year and that was really good for my development but I think I needed to take the step up and play against the bigger bodies. Playing with and against AFL listed players has been great, I have really enjoyed the year. SW: It is a different ball game at this level isn’t it? LMcD: I suppose I had never thought about how to use my body because my athleticism always got me through in the TAC Cup, but in the VFL there are no easy kicks, so using my body has probably been the biggest thing I have had to get my head around. I obviously have to get a bit stronger so I have a fair way to go. SW: What do you do at North Melbourne? LMcD: I do a lot of different things. Sometimes I will be training with the boys, other times I am working on my strength, it changes a lot but it has been very good to get around the boys. SW: What about the draft? LMcD: There is still a lot of water to go under the bridge there, I have been a North Melbourne supporter all my life and I would love to end up there but it is not 100% certain yet. Other clubs have the opportunity to bid on me, but hopefully if all goes right, I will end up at North. SW: All the best for the rest of the season. LMcD: Hopefully we make the finals and end that 20 year drought.
Strong defence: Werribee backman Michael Firrito showed his experience and skill. (ARI HATZIS)
With the class of 1993 watching, Werribee beat Port Melbourne for the second time this season, running out 20.16 (136) to 10.11 (71) winners on Sunday. The Tigers were celebrating the 20th anniversary of their one and only senior premiership, won in 1993 when the competition was known as the VFA. Back in the present at Avalon Airport Oval, it was the Borough who looked the better side early. Port kicked four of the first five goals of the game, with key forward Dean Galea indomitable. He kicked five of Port’s six for the quarter, but Werribee hit back with two goals to Ben Warren and one each to Majak Daw and Ben McKinley, to trail by 13 points at quarter time. From that point, the Tigers controlled much of the contest. Four goals in the second term gave Werribee the lead, with Ben Ross and Brett Meredith getting plenty of the ball. Defender and state representative Jake Wilson received a knee to the midriff early in the term and on Monday was in hospital undergoing assessment. Holding a four-point lead at half-time, Werribee broke the game open in the third term, kicking five goals to one to set up a 33-point margin. Warren, Daw and Addam Maric were among the goalscorers in the final term as Werribee kicked another seven to stretch the margin to 65 by the final siren. The trio each kicked four, and Ben Brown added two, in a strong demonstration of the damage the Werribee forward line can do when the delivery up the ground was as good as it was on Sunday. Ben Ross had 32 touches and was best on ground, Jordan Gysberts had 27 touches and Tim McGenniss 26. They were boosted by North Melbourne defenders Michael Firrito and Scott McMahon. The win moved Werribee to outright fifth, four points behind Williamstown and two ahead of Port, with games against Northern Blues and Collingwood to come. Coach Scott West was in a buoyant mood after the game. “The run and overlap through the middle part of the ground was very good today. [McMahon and Firrito] have got the experience and the skill to play really good footy down back and we’ve got multiple targets up forward,” he said. “We probably still need to get them to work together better, and if we can get that and their leading patterns and all those sorts of things right we’ll be even more dangerous.” \ DANIEL PAPROTH firstname.lastname@example.org

38 WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE \ August 14, 2013
Werribee has two games remaining in the home-and-away season, and a double chance isn’t out of the question. The Tigers travel to Visy Park this Sunday for a clash against Northern Blues, now seventh and looking to hold off North Ballarat, Collingwood and Essendon. The following Saturday it’s out to Victoria Park to play Collingwood, desperate to
play finals after just eight wins in the past two seasons. With plenty at stake for all involved, coach Scott West said the Port Melbourne win became even more crucial. “That’s why this game is so important,” he said. “It puts us ahead of Port now by two points, and obviously then we’ve got teams around us. We have to keep winning to finish as high as we can.
“The thing about footy is you just worry about what you can control; and that’s playing good footy and winning, making sure we prepare well and all those sorts of things so we can perform like we did today.” The Tigers also had a big victory in the development league – 76-point winners over Port Melbourne. Robert Hicks booted four, while Will Martiniello put his hand up for a senior recall with a best-on-ground performance. \ DP
